The Dream Journal
Dream Journaling for the Long Haul with Laura Hilemen

The Dream Journal

What big-picture stuff do we miss out on as we work on our dreams one by one? Today's guest, Laura Hileman, talks about long term dream journaling and how we can use our dream journals to help us review the passing seasons of our lives. She share examples of how she recognized from her dreams that she had cancer long before the doctors diagnosed it. She encourages us to ask our dreams what they are longing for and says she finds it helpful to think of her day and night lives as being all one thing, like the “two” sides of a möbius strip. She then shares some ideas about dreams and spirituality and encourages us to ask what the third grader would say when we find ourselves getting too complicated in our dream analysis. After the break we take a call from Henny from Ontario CA who has a question about active imagination. Laura suggests that we look at Bob Hoss’s Six Magic Questions. We then take a call from Michelle from TN who asks what we are to make of all the weird composite figures that our dreams send us. We end with Laura giving more specific advice about how to record your dreams with an eye toward long term journaling. BIO: Laura has been a dreamworker and spiritual director for 25 years.  Trained at the Haden Institute, she's mentored there and at Wisdom Tree Collective, where her dream course launches in September.  Through her practice Fire by Night Dreamwork, Laura offers online dream groups, private sessions, and workshops on dream integration and spiritual practice. Our guest today is Lisa Rigge, IASD regional rep for the Bay Area and also Haden Institute graduate. We talk about collaging and also about IASD vs Haden dreamwork approaches. We start with ideas around collaging to find meaning from our dreams and in particular, the idea of using negative space. Lisa brings an intuitive and contemplative approach to collaging and also to our next topic: dream groups. We discuss some of the differences between how Jeremey Taylor and Bob Haden approach projective dream groups. The Haden approach emphasizes the idea of a safe container, personal boundaries, and privacy for the dreamer. After the break, we take a call from Lisa from Boston who starts a conversation about archetypes, anima/animus, and shadow. Also a graduate of the Haden Institute, Lisa from Boston talks about the idea of spiritual direction which she prefers to call spiritual companioning. We end with ideas from Lisa Rigge about poetry created out of dreams and also about the idea of a death haiku. BIO: Lisa Rigge has been involved with dream work for over 20 years. Nightmares! We all have them, and some of us have more than a few. Are nightmares caused by trauma? How can we work past our nightmares and start to look forward to sleeping again? Our guest today is trauma specialist, Linda Schiller. She defines nightmares by the feeling tone in the dream and whether the dream situation improves or gets worse. We talk about the idea that we might not ever know the source of our nightmares especially if they were caused by trauma before we developed language including birth trauma and pre-birth trauma. She talks about the importance of creating a sense of safety in the dreamer, and then we spend the rest of the show talking about what you can do about nightmares before they happen, while they are happening, and after they happen.     Dreams give us guidance in so many different ways, helping us solve problems, gain insights into our behavior, ignite our creativity and so much more. But if you really want to supercharge your dreaming experience, then it's time to take a look at lucid dreaming.     For the unaware, a lucid dream is a dream where you realize you're dreaming while you're in the dream. Most people, when they become lucid, like to do fun things like fly in the air, travel through buildings and have fanciful sex. But lucid dreaming also enables you to make contact with yourself in a way not possible in waking life. How? For that, I turn to noted Dream Researcher and Educator Robert Hoss, who in this episode tells us:·      the importance of lucid dreams·      his favorite techniques for getting lucid·      how to access lucid dreaming wisdom·      the types of messages you can receive in a lucid dream and who you can get them from·      how his own lucid dreams changed the course of his life·      when lucid dreams can bring comfort to your daily life·      Plus – as Director of the International Association for the Study of Dreams Annual Conference, Robert gives us a preview of this year's event! If you're ready to take a deep dive into your soul, check out how you can step into the world of lucid dreaming on this profound episode of Dream Power Radio.    Robert Hoss, MS is a director and past president of the International Association for the Study of Dreams, Director of the DreamScience Foundation for research grants, faculty member of the Haden Institute, and on the board of the National Institute for Integrative Healthcare.  He is author/editor of Dreams: Understanding Biology, Psychology & Culture (2019) and Dreams that Change Our Lives (2017) and is author of Dream to Freedom (2013) and Dream Language (2nd edition is now a free download on www.dreamscience.org). Preaching for Good Friday, Leslye Colvin offers a reflection on resisting systems of power and oppression: "History teaches that those who speak from the margins are targeted to suffer cruelties, and, quite often, to suffer death. Jesus was a man with a target on his back. He was born and lived on the margins of a powerful and oppressive system that placed no value on his life. He resisted the dehumanization of this system by recognizing each person as being made in the image and likeness of his beloved Abba, and he acted accordingly. For him, this was God's law written on his heart, and his life testified to this truth." Leslye Colvin is a writer, spiritual companion, retreat facilitator, and contemplative activist. Inspired by the tradition of Catholic social teaching, she is passionate about encouraging diversity of thought especially as it relates to those often marginalized within the community. Currently in the apprenticeship program of the Guild for Spiritual Guidance, Leslye is a graduate of the Living School and the Haden Institute. She holds an M.A. in Communication from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and an undergraduate degree from Xavier University of Louisiana. Leslye serves on the Boards of FutureChurch, and NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice. The Dream Journal this week hosts certified Spiritual Director and Dreamworker Kim Vann who speaks about how when these longings surface, it is the no less than the emergence of our own “Inner Divine, God Within”. We start by talking about how seeker are often the ones drawn to dreamwork, those who are looking for more to life. Kim describes a pivotal dream in which she felt invited to really accept her own beauty and grace. She began a journey which led her to Haden Institute where she studied first Spiritual Direction and the Dreamwork. Since 2002 Dr. Bruce Tallman has been a full-time spiritual director and marriage coach in private practice. He is passionate about his mission, which is to help people grow in wisdom and love. Bruce wrote the manual on how to make a living as a spiritual director – a seminal text for most working spiritual directors and companions called Finding Seekers: How to Develop a Spiritual Direction Practice from Beginning to Full-Time Employment. He also participated in our recent Making a Living 3 Webinar series, which is available as a recorded purchase on the SDI website. Bruce has a new book out, an exploration of the 17th century saint Francis de Sales and his 1616 Treatise on the Love of God. This book is called God's Ecstatic Love and is available for purchase on Amazon, and on Bruce's website – brucetallman.com. Bruce and I recently spoke about this recent book and caught up on all kinds of topics around spiritual direction. In spiritual direction, he has worked with laity and clergy from every Christian denomination. He has published two books for spiritual directors (one of them, Finding Seekers: How to Develop a Spiritual Direction Practice from Beginning to Full-Time Employment, is a bestseller in the field). He has also published two books on spirituality for clergy and lay people (see the "Books" page). He has had hundreds of articles on spirituality published in the London Free Press and other newspapers and is an adjunct faculty for the Haden Institute for Spiritual Directors Training. From 1988 to 2002 Dr. Tallman was the director of two adult religious education centers for the Roman Catholic Diocese of London, Ontario. He holds a Doctor of Ministry degree in Spiritual Direction/Counselling from the Graduate Theological Foundation, which is affiliated with the Gregorian Institute in Rome and Oxford University in England. Francis de Sales, bishop, doctor, saint, and mystic, published Treatise on the Love of God in 1616. Scholars consider it to be one of the classics of Christian literature, on the level of The Cloud of Unknowing, The Imitation of Christ by Thomas a Kempis, and The Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola. Yet, most people have never heard of it. Dr. Bruce Tallman's new book God's Ecstatic Love takes de Sales' spiritual masterpiece and updates it in a way that makes sense to 21st century minds. Near death experiences (NDEs) provide evidence that consciousness exists outside of the body. We speak today with scientist, lucid dreamer and instigator in-chief at the International Association for the Study of Dreams, Robert J. Hoss. Bob shares evidence from his study of over 4000 published NDEs suggesting near universal experiences around death independent of religious or cultural background. Bob then relates his own lucid near death experience which was one of the factors that woke up in him his abiding interest in dreaming. We then talk about Bob's research into the psychological effect of color in both waking life and in dreams. Color often contains concealed emotions in dreams. Bob describes his research with over 4000 dreams from one subject tracking their emotional life with color in dreams. There are dreams, and then there are the dreams that really make us sit up and take notice. Dreams where we have conversations with departed loved ones. Dreams where we can control the action and are aware of what we're doing while we're sleeping. And while they're not exactly dreams, out of body experiences are another real phenomenon that can transform the way we view and experience our waking life. We take a look at these dreams and more with one of my favorite dream researchers, Robert Hoss, who has devoted his life into exploring all facets of what happens after we fall asleep at night. Bob is a Director and Past President of the International Association for the Study of Dreams, is an award-winning author and teacher and is the Director of the IASD's Annual Conference. Raise your hand (or, better yet, leave a comment on the show notes, so I can see it too) if you've ever dreamt of a political figure you strongly dislike. When they showed up in dream-form, how did you engage with them? When dreamers have shared dreams of political figures who were the object of anger or disgust, I've seen transformative shifts in perspective unfold. In this episode, my guest Cythera Wilkerson (another acupuncturist and dreamworker! yes!) talks about, for example, dreaming of Trump, and discovering the connection between feelings toward him, and feelings from childhood. This type of realization is one of the things I value most about dreamwork, on the personal and the collective level: when we are more aware, more clear, and less clouded by reactivity or trauma, we're available to take more wise, heart-ful action in the world. I highlight that moment in this conversation because, in the very near future, I'm expanding this podcast to include much more than dreamwork. Along with dreamworkers, I'll be including guests doing all kinds of work that contribute to The Great Turning of human society toward a life-sustaining way of being on the planet. I share a little more about that in the intro to this episode, and there's much more to come. She has a Masters in Oriental Medicine and has been active in a dreamwork training through the Haden Institute that opened up a whole new world of healing. She practices in her beloved Appalachian mountains at Medicine of the Heart. Cythera honors the work of the divine feminine, which is subtle, body-focused, and slow. She feels that in our fast-paced society it is a space that we and our earth are desperately asking for us to honor. It's so fulfilling to connect with Cythera and her beautiful work, and I hope you'll be filled by this conversation too. Once a year those interested in this work gather for the conference run by the International Association for the Study of Dreams, which this year is being held in June. Her focus is on guiding people towards increased spiritual and emotional well-being. In last week’s episode of SDI Encounters, we talked with Amy Curran, a Dreamworker, about our dreams and the work of dreamwork and spiritual companionship. As part of my (Matt Whitney) exploration into dreamwork, I went through the typical dreamwork process with Amy, using one of my own dreams for this process. In this case, my dream was about working in a grocery store. So here’s how it went – I had the dream, and Amy invited me to write it out, in the present tense. I sent that to Amy, who then responded a couple of days later with some clarifying questions, such as “you mention so-and-so in your dream, or such-and-such place – describe this person, or this place, in three words.” I responded with my answers and descriptions, and Amy then creates her dream interpretation. What follows here is our conversation about Amy’s interpretation of my dream. For someone who was admittedly ignorant about dreamwork before these conversations, I found the exercise fascinating, and really revealing. It’s a bit long for our podcasts, and it certainly feels vulnerable to put my own dream out there – especially since it includes a LOT about my work with SDI, but I hope my doing so invites you to more freely explore your own dreams, and get a sense of how dreamwork functions as a form of spiritual companionship. --- Amy Curran is a certified dreamwork facilitator, who received her two-year certification from the Haden Institute in 2019. She also has a BA in Marketing from Western Washington University. A lifelong resident of Bainbridge Island, WA. Amy’s interest in the inner realm of the dream has lead her to seek out groups to help process her own dreams. She has also worked with psychotherapists in the Jungian tradition, both of which have provided her with rich insights. Amy’s desire as a dream worker is to guide those with curiosity and interest in their dreams, through explorations of what the unconscious brings forth. She offers a safe container for deepening relationships to dreams, in her home studio on Bainbridge Island. Maybe it goes without saying, but all of us dream, multiple times a night. Some of us are more attuned to our dreams than others, with myself being one who historically has not been attuned to my dreams. Anecdotally I (Matt Whitney) have heard about people having more recollection of their dreams, and much more vivid dreams, during this time of pandemic. And my anecdotal recalling is backed up by recent news articles on the increased reporting of vivid dreams and their unusual content from people during this time of CoronaVirus. I have included links to a few of these articles below. So it’s with a good deal of relevance and personal curiosity that I spoke with Amy Curran, a certified dreamwork facilitator. You can learn about her work at her website www.innerdreamwork.com Have you been dreaming more vividly and extensively during this time, and would like to explore a deeper, more purposeful meaning to your dreams? Or are you a spiritual companion looking for some ways to explore dreams with the people you work with or meet with?  This episode has a lot of practical advice and tools for you to begin to work with. And in the next episode, I go through the dreamwork process with Amy, so stay tuned for a session of "Fishbowl Spiritual Companionship" - looking into the real-life process of spiritual companionship! --- Amy Curran is a certified dreamwork facilitator, who received her two-year certification from the Haden Institute in 2019. Dream Scientist, Bob Hoss, Director of the Dream Science Foundation, and past president of the International Association for the Study of Dreams (www.AsDreams.org -- and will be speaking at the upcoming conference) wrangled 100 dreamers (ala in the style of "Chicken Soup for the Soul") to share stories that  have done just that!   Have you ever awakened from a dream that left you feeling stunned—a dream so vivid or impactful—so unexpected—that it changes your life from that point forward?  Imagine you could ask a question of a dream character, or the dream itself, and watch as a profoundly surprising response appears. Suppose you could take action in your dream to eliminate a recurring nightmare, heal a relationship, or even a physical ailment.     These are what might be called big dreams, stories of life changing guidance, insight and healing; some that reach beyond the senses and even beyond death.  They are presented as guideposts along our life's journey, and introduced by 22 internationally acclaimed experts, psychologists, researchers, and best-selling authors from the International Association for the Study of Dreams (IASD):  Deirdre Barrett, Susannah Benson, Kelly Bulkeley, Laurel Clark, Gayle Delaney, Marcia Emery, Patricia Garfield, Robert Gongloff, Bob Haden, Robert Hoss, Ed Kellogg, Stanley Krippner, Justina Lasley, Jacquie E. Lewis, Tallulah Lyons, Wendy Pannier, Alan Siegel, Carlyle Smith, Gregory Scott Sparrow, Jeremy Taylor, Robert Waggoner and moi, Kelly Sullivan Walden.   On the show today, we talk about some of his favorite stories--these dream tales will inspire you, make you cry, uplift your soul, make you never again take your dreams lying down!     Here's more about my favorite Dream Scientist:    Robert Hoss, MS is author of Dream Language, Officer and former President of the International Association for the Study of Dreams, Director of the DreamScience foundation for research grants, advisory board of the Soul Medicine Institute and Haden Institute faculty member. A frequent guest on radio and TV, he was host of the IASD DreamTime Radio series and has been an internationally acclaimed lecturer and/or instructor on dreams and dreamwork at various institutions, colleges and universities for over 30 years. His simple but powerful Image Activation dreamworking approach is based on a unique blending of Gestalt work, Jungian theory, the neurobiology of dreaming, plus his research into the significance of color in dreams. Formerly a scientist, and researcher in the field of optical communications, he was a pioneer with multiple patents and the Corporate Vice President for Global Telecommunications at both American Express and IBM. He now devotes his science and management skills to dream studies. He was recently featured in the PBS Dreamtime TV special, and in Readers Digest, Prevention Magazine and USA Today.
