S12e18: Julia Bodkin – Nowhere Left to Go, Nothing Left to Lose

“I often feel like the work is kind of a disintegrative work that we’re doing, we’re allowing the patterns and the structures to release, so that there’s sort of nowhere left to go, because there’s nothing left to lose.” – Julia Bodkin Beloved Hoffman Process facilitator and psychotherapist, Julia Bodkin, first took the Process in India in her very early adulthood. After living quite a bit of life, she took it again in Australia. Now, as a trained professional in many healing modalities, Julia facilitates the Process in the U.K. She brings a lifetime of experience, wisdom, and expertise, along with her generous, vulnerable heart. In her youth, Julia wondered if there could be more to life than just getting a job and settling down. She grew up in a middle-class British family that, to her, seemed very “dull.” So she left the U.K. and travelled around India until she came to Pune, India, where she studied on and off for ten years. Along her journey, having worked within many of the great schools of spiritual transformation, Julia knew she was seeking enlightenment and an “everlasting blissful state.” Through study, teaching, and much meditation, she’s, over time, found herself settling into an awakening and the embodiment of her true nature. Julia now sees it as “settling into what is.” In teaching the Process, Julia shares how beautiful it is to watch students soften into themselves. She shares that in shedding patterns, they start “to get familiar with something that they’ve been trying to avoid, and realize how beautiful it is, and how much more open, and how much sweeter it is to have that connection with themselves.“ We know you’ll love this conversation with Julia and Drew. It’s filled with many bits of Hoffman history that might be new to you. Listen on Apple Podcasts More about Julia Bodkin: Julia Bodkin has been a Hoffman Process facilitator since 2014. She completed the Process, trained in Australia, and is now based in Devon, in the U.K., where she has a private psychotherapy practice. Julia’s work is inspired by more than 35 years of personal and professional immersion in different schools of psychotherapy and meditation. She has a degree in psychotherapy and a long career as a therapist in private practice, individually and with groups. Julia has worked as an addiction therapist at the original Priory Hospital in London. For 15 years, Julia was a co-creator and a senior facilitator of The Path of Love process. She has been a senior teacher of the Diamond Logos Teaching since the late 1990's. She has expertise and experience in Trauma Healing/SE®, Addiction Treatment, Gestalt Therapy, Group Therapy, Family Therapy & Family Constellation, and is also a Craniosacral Therapy practitioner. As a traveller, Julia has lived and worked on several continents and is passionate about supporting people in reconnecting with their true nature. Once an ironman athlete and perfectionist, Risa August faced a devastating diagnosis that stripped away her former life. This is the story of how she found new purpose and adventure, transforming her approach to life, from rigid achievement to joyful discovery, even with her unexpected companion, "Bubba," her brain tumor.    Chapters: 00:00 From Extreme Achiever to Illness  Host Bill Burke introduces Risa August, an adventurous woman who once excelled in extreme sports, asking, "Is there anything you can't do?" Risa describes her past as an intense overachiever and perfectionist, pushing limits in Ironman, mountain climbing, and hot yoga, always striving to be better than others and maintaining a rigid lifestyle.  03:51 The Diagnosis of Acromegaly  Risa recounts the onset of strange symptoms after her first Ironman in 2010, including significant weight gain despite a strict diet and increasing fatigue. After years of doctors dismissing her concerns, she insisted on an MRI, which revealed an enlarged pituitary and led to her diagnosis of acromegaly, a serious condition she had never heard of before.  11:09 Choosing Adventure Over Despair  Faced with a devastating diagnosis and a challenging life, Risa decided not to break down but to break out, committing to her adventures despite doctors' warnings about what she could no longer do. She realized she would never be her old self, so she focused on "who can I be then?" and made a conscious decision to truly live life on her own terms.  14:00 The Road Unpaved and Bubba  Risa found a new purpose in a cross-country bicycle journey along the Pacific Coast Highway, a trip she committed to doing on her own terms after reflecting on her past perfectionism. She also named her brain tumor 'Bubba' as a way to connect with her changing body, turning him into a central character and partner in her healing journey and the book.  21:29 Gestalt Therapy and Connection  Risa discusses how her Gestalt therapy training, which she underwent during her diagnosis, provided a crucial support network and helped her become a more patient, compassionate, and curious practitioner. She also emphasizes the importance of deep, personal connection and active listening, a lesson she learned on her bike tour by giving others a chance and finding unexpected commonalities.  30:13 The CAN Framework  Risa shares her 'CAN' framework—Capable, Able, Now—which she developed after feeling stuck post-surgery and questioning her purpose. This mantra helped her simplify the complex challenges she faced, prompting her to ask, "What am I capable and able to do now, in this moment?"  35:29 Living a Full Life Now  Risa openly discusses the progression of her acromegaly and its physical toll, yet she maintains a strong mindset, dedicated to inspiring others to live full lives. She now finds joy in simple things, like perusing a farmer's market, and doesn't worry about disappointing others by not always seeking the 'next big thing.'

In this episode, Dr. Stephen Sideroff explores the concept of going beyond burnout by introducing what he calls “burn-up”—a state of chronic stress where individuals continue functioning on the surface but are internally depleted, overwhelmed, and at risk of breaking down. He explains how to recognize the warning signs of burn-up, from constant fatigue to emotional disconnection, and outlines the serious risks it poses to both mental and physical health. With life becoming faster and more complex, Dr. Sideroff shares practical strategies to reverse this condition and build true resilience, emphasizing the importance of sustainable habits and mindset shifts. He also introduces his “9 pillars of resilience,” offering a structured approach to regaining balance, improving well-being, and thriving despite ongoing challenges. Dr. Stephen Sideroff Biography Dr. Stephen Sideroff is an internationally recognized expert in resilience, optimal performance, addiction, neurofeedback and alternative approaches to stress and mental health. In this conversation, we speak with Rabbi Elimelech Lamdan about the roots of human suffering and the path to inner peace through honest self-reflection. Drawing from Kabbalah, psychology, and lived experience, Elimelech outlines a practical four-step process to uncover hidden emotional patterns, dissolve ego-based identity, and reconnect with a deeper sense of wholeness. The discussion bridges spirituality and modern self-awareness, offering a grounded method for transforming inner conflict into clarity, compassion, and alignment.Key Takeaways:Most emotional distress comes from unconscious beliefs about being “not enough” or “flawed.”External triggers are reflections of internal dialogue—not the true cause of suffering.Self-awareness begins with noticing emotions without judgment.Healing requires accepting inner conflict rather than avoiding it.True peace comes from reconnecting with an inherent sense of wholeness beyond ego.Where to find Elimelech Lamdan:Website: https://mabatemet.comRabbi Elimelech Lamdan Bio:Rabbi Elimelech Lamdan is the creator of Mabbat Emet (“Truthful Self-Scrutiny”), a practical approach to emotional healing that integrates Torah wisdom, psychological insight, and lived experience. Born in Israel and raised in Boston, he served in the Israeli Air Force, including as a military rabbi, where his encounters with soldiers facing fear and uncertainty shaped his understanding of human struggle. After his service, he explored therapeutic modalities such as Gestalt Therapy, Transactional Analysis, and body-mind approaches, ultimately developing his own method to address deeper emotional and spiritual patterns. A father of ten who spent decades teaching and counseling in Netivot, his work is grounded in real-life relationships rather than theory alone. He is the author of Torah Therapy and Mabbat Emet, now available internationally, and continues to guide individuals toward greater honesty, self-awareness, and inner alignment.

The word “mindfulness” gets thrown around a lot... But have you ever taken the time to consider what it really means to parent mindfully? Or how embracing all of your emotions—even the tough ones—can transform your family life? Gestalt Therapist, certified mindfulness meditation teacher, and father of one, Vikram Kolmannskog, joins us to share wisdom from his upcoming book Reflections on Parenting From a Gestalt Therapist Father: Life With Leo. Vikram shares about his own alternative family structure, the importance of embracing emotional honesty, making space for playfulness, and how the principles of Gestalt therapy can help us raise confident, empathetic kids. Topics include: • Understanding Gestalt therapy and its focus on awareness, mindfulness, and relational dialogue in both therapy and everyday life. • Applying Gestalt and mindfulness strategies to parenting, especially around navigating emotions (both our kids' and our own), while aiming to be a “good enough” dad. • Exploring co-parenting in an intentional, non-traditional family structure with two fathers and a mother, and the legal, social, and personal challenges encountered. • The importance of allowing and naming all emotions, including anger, for both children and adults, and breaking emotional taboos in parenting. • Navigating cultural and institutional heteronormativity around family structures and parenthood, and advocating for greater inclusivity. • The value of playful parenting, eco-parenting, and the influence of childlike spontaneity and joy on both personal and professional life. • Creating safe and open environments for children to freely express gender and identity, while preparing them for a world that isn't always accepting. • And more!   LINKSVikram Kolmannskog (homepage)Reflections on Parenting From a Gestalt Therapist Father: Life With Leo.Vikram Kolmannskog (Instagram)Vikram Kolmannskog (Facebook)DEATH AND (homepage)DEATH AND (YouTube)This Headache Journey (Apple Podcasts)Caspar BabypantsSpencer AlbeeModern Dadhood (website)AdamFlaherty.tvStuffed Animal (Marc's kids' music)MD (Instagram)MD (Facebook)MD (YouTube)MD (TikTok) #moderndadhood #fatherhood #parenthood #parenting #parentingpodcast #dadding #dadpodcast

Fitting In: Is the Corporate Mask Exhausting You?

A Job Done Well

Fitting in at work isn't just about wearing the right shirt or laughing at the boss's jokes—it's about survival. Or at least, that's how it feels. This week on A Job Done Well, James and Jimmy are joined by Gestalt psychotherapist Dawn Wray to dissect the dark art of "fitting in" and why it's more psychologically taxing than a Monday morning spreadsheet. It's not about your social skills. It's about the ancient, visceral patterns of belonging—or not—that shape how you show up at work, how you hide, and how you might just lose yourself in the process.Dawn pulls no punches: fitting in isn't just uncomfortable, it's exhausting. It's the constant, unconscious negotiation between who you are and who you think you need to be to avoid rejection. It's the shirt you tuck in, the opinions you swallow, and the banter you force yourself to laugh at—all while your brain screams, "This isn't me." And when the gap between your authentic self and your "work self" yawns too wide? Welcome to burnout, anxiety, and the slow erosion of confidence. But here's the kicker: not fitting in isn't always a bad thing. Sometimes, it's growth. Sometimes, it's the friction that forces change. The trick? Knowing the difference between the discomfort of stretching and the soul-crushing drain of pretending. Dawn's advice? Slow down. Pay attention. Notice when you're holding your breath in meetings or rehearsing your personality before walking into the boardroom. And ask yourself: Are you adapting, or are you disappearing?James and Jimmy riff on the absurdity of corporate "professionalism" (read: conformity), the myth of the "perfect fit," and why the most dangerous employees might just be the ones who never complain. Because if everyone's nodding along, someone's lying—and it might be you.Five Key Points:Fitting in isn't about skills—it's about survival. Your brain treats workplace rejection like a threat to your safety, thanks to patterns wired in since childhood. The cost of conformity: Swallowing your opinions or faking enthusiasm doesn't just feel bad—it drains energy, fuels anxiety, and can tank your performance. Not all discomfort is equal. Growth feels energising; self-betrayal feels like dread. Learn to tell the difference. The "professionalism" con. What's often sold as "professional" is just socially sanctioned masking—tuck in your shirt, shut up, and smile. The ultimate question: Are you adapting to thrive, or editing yourself to survive? And if it's the latter, how long can you keep it up?Got a question - get in touch. Click here.

Welcome back to Friendship Therapy, the podcast in which we look at friendships through a therapeutic lens. To kick off season three, Emma chats to Poppy, who is struggling with a friendship dilemma that many of us can relate to.We've all been on the receiving end of a friend who has ditched us temporarily for a new relationship; perhaps we've been that friend who has, for a period of time, chosen to spend more time with a new partner than with our friendship group. But what happens when history seems to repeat itself over and over again? This week, Emma and Poppy talk about a particular friend who continuously chooses to drop her when the offer of a new relationship is on the horizon, and how that feels for Poppy. Using a Gestalt therapy technique, Emma takes Poppy through a therapy exercise live on the podcast to help her make sense of how a conversation with her friend might play out, and what the resolution might look like.Together, Emma and Poppy discover what Poppy's motivations in this friendship are, and why it might be more about feelings of fear, than feelings of frustration between the two of them.Find out more about Gestalt Therapy techniques: https://www.mentalhealth.com/library/gestalt-therapy-the-empty-chair-technique#:~:text=The%20Empty%20Chair%20Technique%20is,internal%20conflicts%20or%20unfinished%20business.If you'd like to apply to appear on the podcast, please click the link below to fill out the form: https://forms.gle/9yZAVgF9BbyKhwsV7---Friendship Therapy is hosted by Emma Reed Turrell, produced by Chris Sharp and Lauren Brook.--- Social media: Emma Reed Turrell @emmareedturrellFriendship Therapy @friendshiptherapypodEmail: contact@friendshiptherapypod.co.uk

Today, I interview Randall Alifano who grew up in a loud, talkative Italian family where everyone spoke, but no one really listened. Like many of us, Randall often felt unheard and disconnected, surrounded by people but without real understanding. This early experience of being silenced planted the seed for his deep curiosity about human connection and the power of listening. As he grew older, Randall began asking deeper questions, eager to understand the emotions behind people's words. His breakthrough came when he started working with individuals who had experienced profound trauma. He quickly realized that what people needed most wasn't advice or diagnosis, but someone to truly hear them. His ability to listen with full presence became the foundation of his healing work.Randall's approach to listening goes beyond the surface, allowing others to face their fears, feel understood, and reclaim their voice. He now teaches people how to connect with themselves and others through deep, compassionate listening, transforming their relationships and personal growth. His work has helped countless individuals move through their struggles by creating a safe space where they can be fully heard.__________________Randall Alifano, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and ordained minister with over 40 years of experience integrating psychology and spirituality into his private practice. He has also studied and applied various psychological and spiritual methodologies, enriching his holistic approach to healing. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Alifano has co-led seminars on intuitive listening and apprenticed with renowned figures in Gestalt Therapy and Encounter Groups at Esalen Institute. Yay! In this episode, Seraphina and I discuss the relationship between shame, guilt, money,  debt and the cultural differences in the perception of debt and the importance of emotional intelligence in managing finances. TakeawaysDebt is not inherently bad and can be used in a positive way, such as building credit, resilience and self confidence. Shame is an internalized belief that one is bad, while guilt is the belief that one has done something bad.Understanding the underlying reasons for debt, including unresolved money wounds, is crucial for healing.Shame and guilt can negatively impact our financial decisions and prevent us from taking necessary risks or investments.Cultural differences play a role in how debt is perceived, with some cultures viewing it as shameful while others see it as a necessary part of life. Why emotional literacy is crucial in managing finances, as our emotions can influence our financial decisions and behaviors.Developing a healthy relationship with money requires shifting perspectives and embracing authenticity. How the power of perspective can turn a crisis into an adventure, allowing us to approach challenges with a positive mindset.Connect with Serphina:Seraphina is a systemic coach and behavior trainer, holistic business developer and integrative personality developer with years of experience in supporting top executives and companies from start-ups to large international corporations in their transformation processes - both as a consultant in large consulting firms and as a founder and managing director in her own companies. This week we welcome author and clinical psychologist Dr. Mark McConville to The Hamilton Review Podcast! Dr. McConville discusses his must read book for parents entitled "Failure To Launch." McConville investigates the root causes of this problem: Why are modern kids “failing to launch” in ever-increasing numbers? The key, McConville has found, is that they are struggling with three critical skills that are necessary to make the transition from childhood to adulthood–finding a sense of purpose, developing administrative responsibility, and cultivating interdependence. In Failure to Launch, McConville breaks these down into achievable, accessible goals and offers a practical guide for the whole family, to help parents instill those skills in their young adults–and to get their kids into the real world, ready to start their lives. Enjoy this valuable conversation! Mark McConville Ph.D. is a Clinical Psychologist in private practice in Beachwood, Ohio, specializing in adult, adolescent, emerging adult, and family psychology. Dr. McConville is a senior faculty member at the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland and has lectured and taught widely on the subjects of child development, parenting, and counseling methodology. His book Adolescence: Psychotherapy and the Emergent Self (Jossey-Bass, 1995) was awarded the 1995 Nevis Prize for Outstanding Contribution to Gestalt Therapy theory. He is the author of the Counseling Feedback Report, an innovative and widely used adolescent assessment tool, and is co-editor of The Heart of Development: Gestalt Approaches to Childhood and Adolescence, vols. I & II,(The Analytic Press, 2001). His latest book titled ‘Failure to Launch' which investigates the root causes of why modern kids are struggling to transition from childhood to adulthood was released in January 2020. In addition to his private clinical practice, Dr. McConville serves as Consulting Psychologist to Hathaway Brown School and University School, both in the Cleveland area. More on this week's guest: Melissa has been a clinical social worker and Gestalt Psychotherapist for over 20 years. She practices virtually in NY, TX, WA, and NC treating adults who struggle with perfectionism, setting boundaries, codependency, and making their own needs a priority by utilizing individual and group settings. As a therapist to therapists, Melissa offers counsel to other mental health professionals and provides career guidance through clinical supervision. Melissa combines her creativity as a musician with the creative and experiential therapy of Gestalt, to allow for patterns that have become characterological, to emerge in session. www.melissabennettheinz.com  More deets from this episode: We begin with hearing Melissa's take on the definition of codependency: a relationship dynamic where the ‘giver' completely sacrifices their needs for another (a ‘taker' or a ‘receiver'). Codependency, to Melissa, is also how someone feels in a relationship where they are often anxious, insecure, questioning, and overdoing as they doubt they are enough. Melissa revisits a codependent experience when she returned her shopping cart at ALDI. Yes, it was just a moment but there's so much depth and meaning in the exchange, right? Melissa then provides us with a 101 tutorial on Gestalt Therapy: who founded it, how it views human behavior, and the pillars of the therapeutic approach.  We hear about Gestalt's emphasis on making meaning in our lives, dealing with interruptions, and the four ways we respond to others: introjection, projection, confluence, and retroflection.  We conclude with hearing how Melissa's approach helps her clients become aware of their characterological patterns. It's all about awareness! Thank you for coming Melissa! And thank you for being here dear listener! PLEASE: Rate.  Review. Subscribe.  Share. We need more ratings on Spotify!
