Welcome back to Friendship Therapy, the podcast in which we look at friendships through a therapeutic lens. To kick off season three, Emma chats to Poppy, who is struggling with a friendship dilemma that many of us can relate to.We've all been on the receiving end of a friend who has ditched us temporarily for a new relationship; perhaps we've been that friend who has, for a period of time, chosen to spend more time with a new partner than with our friendship group. But what happens when history seems to repeat itself over and over again? This week, Emma and Poppy talk about a particular friend who continuously chooses to drop her when the offer of a new relationship is on the horizon, and how that feels for Poppy. Using a Gestalt therapy technique, Emma takes Poppy through a therapy exercise live on the podcast to help her make sense of how a conversation with her friend might play out, and what the resolution might look like.Together, Emma and Poppy discover what Poppy's motivations in this friendship are, and why it might be more about feelings of fear, than feelings of frustration between the two of them.Find out more about Gestalt Therapy techniques: https://www.mentalhealth.com/library/gestalt-therapy-the-empty-chair-technique#:~:text=The%20Empty%20Chair%20Technique%20is,internal%20conflicts%20or%20unfinished%20business.If you'd like to apply to appear on the podcast, please click the link below to fill out the form: https://forms.gle/9yZAVgF9BbyKhwsV7---Friendship Therapy is hosted by Emma Reed Turrell, produced by Chris Sharp and Lauren Brook.--- Social media: Emma Reed Turrell @emmareedturrellFriendship Therapy @friendshiptherapypodEmail: contact@friendshiptherapypod.co.uk

Today, I interview Randall Alifano who grew up in a loud, talkative Italian family where everyone spoke, but no one really listened. Like many of us, Randall often felt unheard and disconnected, surrounded by people but without real understanding. This early experience of being silenced planted the seed for his deep curiosity about human connection and the power of listening. As he grew older, Randall began asking deeper questions, eager to understand the emotions behind people's words. His breakthrough came when he started working with individuals who had experienced profound trauma. He quickly realized that what people needed most wasn't advice or diagnosis, but someone to truly hear them. His ability to listen with full presence became the foundation of his healing work.Randall's approach to listening goes beyond the surface, allowing others to face their fears, feel understood, and reclaim their voice. He now teaches people how to connect with themselves and others through deep, compassionate listening, transforming their relationships and personal growth. His work has helped countless individuals move through their struggles by creating a safe space where they can be fully heard.__________________Randall Alifano, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and ordained minister with over 40 years of experience integrating psychology and spirituality into his private practice. He has dedicated his career to listening deeply to the dreams, traumas, and inner struggles of his clients, guiding them toward living in greater alignment with their inner wisdom. His work spans a wide range of experiences, including counseling battered women, running groups for violent men, and designing a domestic violence program. He has also studied and applied various psychological and spiritual methodologies, enriching his holistic approach to healing. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Alifano has co-led seminars on intuitive listening and apprenticed with renowned figures in Gestalt Therapy and Encounter Groups at Esalen Institute. His teachings emphasize the power of presence, empathy, and curiosity in fostering deep connections with both others and ourselves. Through his guidance, he has witnessed the transformative impact of being truly heard, helping people enhance their relationships and personal growth.Outside his practice, Dr. Alifano enjoys drumming, meditation, and cooking his grandmother's famous Bolognese sauce.__________________Find Randall here:Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/randall.alifanoInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/randallalifano/ Book on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Listening-Raw-Coming-Home-Receptivity/dp/B0C7JFWYZCWebsite: https://randallalifanophd.com/book/Support the showI'm Dr. Doreen Downing and I help people find their voice so they can speak without fear. This week, I am playing with something new, and pretty exciting! Introducing “Ask Nadine” episodes where listeners get on the mic and interview me! It's a podcast party! Yay! In this episode, Seraphina and I discuss the relationship between shame, guilt, money, debt and the cultural differences in the perception of debt and the importance of emotional intelligence in managing finances. TakeawaysDebt is not inherently bad and can be used in a positive way, such as building credit, resilience and self confidence. Shame is an internalized belief that one is bad, while guilt is the belief that one has done something bad.Understanding the underlying reasons for debt, including unresolved money wounds, is crucial for healing.Shame and guilt can negatively impact our financial decisions and prevent us from taking necessary risks or investments.Cultural differences play a role in how debt is perceived, with some cultures viewing it as shameful while others see it as a necessary part of life. Why emotional literacy is crucial in managing finances, as our emotions can influence our financial decisions and behaviors.Developing a healthy relationship with money requires shifting perspectives and embracing authenticity. How the power of perspective can turn a crisis into an adventure, allowing us to approach challenges with a positive mindset.Connect with Serphina:Seraphina is a systemic coach and behavior trainer, holistic business developer and integrative personality developer with years of experience in supporting top executives and companies from start-ups to large international corporations in their transformation processes - both as a consultant in large consulting firms and as a founder and managing director in her own companies. This week we welcome author and clinical psychologist Dr. Mark McConville to The Hamilton Review Podcast! Dr. McConville discusses his must read book for parents entitled "Failure To Launch." McConville investigates the root causes of this problem: Why are modern kids “failing to launch” in ever-increasing numbers? The key, McConville has found, is that they are struggling with three critical skills that are necessary to make the transition from childhood to adulthood–finding a sense of purpose, developing administrative responsibility, and cultivating interdependence. In Failure to Launch, McConville breaks these down into achievable, accessible goals and offers a practical guide for the whole family, to help parents instill those skills in their young adults–and to get their kids into the real world, ready to start their lives. Enjoy this valuable conversation! Mark McConville Ph.D. is a Clinical Psychologist in private practice in Beachwood, Ohio, specializing in adult, adolescent, emerging adult, and family psychology. Dr. McConville is a senior faculty member at the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland and has lectured and taught widely on the subjects of child development, parenting, and counseling methodology. His book Adolescence: Psychotherapy and the Emergent Self (Jossey-Bass, 1995) was awarded the 1995 Nevis Prize for Outstanding Contribution to Gestalt Therapy theory. He is the author of the Counseling Feedback Report, an innovative and widely used adolescent assessment tool, and is co-editor of The Heart of Development: Gestalt Approaches to Childhood and Adolescence, vols. I & II,(The Analytic Press, 2001). His latest book titled ‘Failure to Launch' which investigates the root causes of why modern kids are struggling to transition from childhood to adulthood was released in January 2020. In addition to his private clinical practice, Dr. McConville serves as Consulting Psychologist to Hathaway Brown School and University School, both in the Cleveland area. In this episode we continue our gestalt series, and delve further into the world of polarities, observing how we fracture ourselves into a mind and a body. The body then takes the role of the disowned self. Since freedom starts with the individual, I believe that healing the fractured self is a vital step that can help us pave the way to a free society. I've been working with Neil for a few years since he pulled me out of a deep chronic-pain filled hole by clearing my house for me. I had been doing all the healing work on myself and my body, and, of course, never thought to have my house cleared. We talk about this and share some funny stories, along with his deeply personal journey to becoming the master healer that I believe that he is. Stay tuned for useful tips and information. I don't like to put trigger warnings on anything, but Neil does tell us why he does what he does. The pathway of the magician, and of the wounded healer, it is what makes us the powerful beings that we are. To access our conference library of 200+ fascinating psychology talks and interviews (with certification), please visit: https://twumembers.com Dr Scott Kellogg and Amanda Garcia Torres are co-directors of the Chairwork Psychotherapy Initiative - an innovative therapy training organisation which empowers mental health professionals to integrate chairwork with their therapeutic approach. I attended one of their trainings in September 2023 and it was incredibly powerful, turning over many of the assumptions I held about how therapy should be done. In this conversation, we explore: — The therapeutic benefits of viewing human beings as containing multiple different parts — The two origins of the inner critic and why it may be behind the vast majority of mental health problems — How chairwork can be applied to heal addiction, trauma, and a wide range of issues. — How this approach helps to create space and distance internally from maladaptive coping parts that may be having a negative effect in our lives. And more. You can learn more about Scott and Amanda's work by going to https://transformationalchairwork.com. --- Amanda Garcia Torres, LMHC is a certified Chairwork Psychotherapist and Co-Director of Training at the Transformational Chairwork Psychotherapy Project. A Viet Nam combat vet with PTSD. What do 137 of his dreams over 45 years reveal about how dreams help us process emotion? Also tips for dealing with nightmares and highlights from the upcoming IASD conference. Katherine speaks with IASD conference co-chair and founder of Dream Science Robert Hoss. Bob describes that after a traumatic event, dreams can be direct replays, but over time, as symptoms ease, dreams morph into metaphors related to the event. Bob gives examples of how dreams offer us alternative solutions to our dilemmas and change our minds IN THE DREAM, so that we don't have to work with a dream or even remember it to benefit from the dreaming process. He describes nightmares as unfinished dreams and gives several ways of working with them including Image Rehearsal Therapy and becoming lucid. **Note: This is a special experiential and participatory workshop. The movements will entail sitting or working on the floor. Please wear comfortable clothing and find a quiet, carpeted or lightly padded area. What allows painful events to continue affecting us over time? How can we transform our relationship to these events, to reduce their traumatic impact? These are the questions Breema Bodywork teachers Angela Porter, MFT, and Alexandra Johnson, MD, will explore in a special experiential and participatory workshop.** Breema Bodywork is a "teaching of the heart, an expression of the unifying principle of Existence." Angela and Alexandra will lead a variety of somatic (body-based) movement practices to help nurture connection between the body and mind, open possibilities to process events in a new way, and strengthen the capacity to assimilate, heal, and live fully. "To experience unity in our life, we must be unified within ourselves. A first step in this process is to bring body and mind together to bring us from a passive state to an active one." Angela Porter, MFT, is an activist and somatic therapist specializing in the treatment of trauma and addictions. She has trained in multiple modalities, including Gestalt Therapy, Somatic Therapy, counseling psychology, and EMDR. As an instructor and practitioner of Breema Bodywork since 1998, Angela uses the mind-body connection as the foundation of her work with individuals and groups. Outside of her Oakland-based private practice, Angela serves as adjunct faculty of graduate psychology at California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, JFK University, and The Psychotherapy Institute in Berkeley. She also teaches clinical trainees at various institutes. Formerly a program director and group facilitator at various substance abuse treatment centers, Angela has a passion for supporting veterans, formerly incarcerated men and women, and people with co-occurring mental health concerns. Angela enjoys traveling internationally to teach workshops for therapists, doctors, nurses, midwives, other healthcare professionals, and teachers. Alexandra Johnson, MD, is an integrative and functional medicine physician specializing in family medicine, women's health, and care for the underserved. Even before her medical training, she was interested in holistic care, learning Breema Bodywork and also certifying as a doula. In addition to studying and teaching Breema locally and internationally for over 20 years, she has served as teaching faculty for the University of Colorado and Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia. During her time in Ethiopia, she developed an infection in her brain, leading to significant health challenges, only to reinforce the role of Breema to transform body and mind. Her work in prenatal care, and labor and delivery, incorporates the Breema principles. To facilitate cross-talk between home birth and hospital birth providers, she was featured in the 2016 film, Why Not Home? Her current clinical practice in Northern California integrates Breema, hypnosis, diet, and personalized medical care. She lives in Santa Cruz, CA, with her husband -- who is also a Breema instructor -- and their five children. Please join us in this special offering to experience individual embodiment practices in a collective field.

What is Gestalt therapy and why is it important? How can you increase your self-awareness and begin to understand how you perceive experiences?MEET Melissa Bennett-HeinzMelissa Bennett-Heinz is a graduate of Columbia University School of Social Work and is a practicing Gestalt Psychotherapist in private practice in NY, NC, TX, and WA. She brings her background as a classically trained musician and the creative therapy of Gestalt together in her authentic and relational approach. Gestalt Therapy goes beyond looking at the cognitive, linear perspectives of the person with its focus on process rather than content, paying particular attention to your body, an experiential awareness of how and what you do allows for new choices to emerge spontaneously. Melissa is most interested in the power of the co-created experience to promote self-actualization in the ongoing process of becoming who we are.”Find out more at Melissa Bennett-Heinz and connect with Melissa on LinkedInIN THIS PODCAST:What is Gestalt Therapy? 4:36Common Gestalt techniques 17:50What Is Gestalt Therapy? What is the origin of Gestalt therapy?Understanding patterns in Gestalt How is Gestalt different from the psychodynamic theory? The importance of the client and therapist relationship when approaching Gestalt therapy.Common Gestalt TechniquesWhat is the empty chair technique? What are the main goals of Gestalt therapy?Seeing the different outcomes of Gestalt therapyWhat is the Highlighting technique in Gestalt?Connect With MeInstagram @holisticcounselingpodcastFacebookJoin the private Facebook groupSign up for my free email course: www.holisticcounselingpodcast.comRate, review, and subscribe to this podcast on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, TuneIn, Spotify, and Google Podcasts.Resources Mentioned And Useful Links:Find out more at Melissa Bennett-Heinz and connect with Melissa on LinkedIn

More on this week's guest: Melissa has been a clinical social worker and Gestalt Psychotherapist for over 20 years. She practices virtually in NY, TX, WA, and NC treating adults who struggle with perfectionism, setting boundaries, codependency, and making their own needs a priority by utilizing individual and group settings. As a therapist to therapists, Melissa offers counsel to other mental health professionals and provides career guidance through clinical supervision. Melissa combines her creativity as a musician with the creative and experiential therapy of Gestalt, to allow for patterns that have become characterological, to emerge in session. www.melissabennettheinz.com More deets from this episode: We begin with hearing Melissa's take on the definition of codependency: a relationship dynamic where the ‘giver' completely sacrifices their needs for another (a ‘taker' or a ‘receiver'). Codependency, to Melissa, is also how someone feels in a relationship where they are often anxious, insecure, questioning, and overdoing as they doubt they are enough. Melissa revisits a codependent experience when she returned her shopping cart at ALDI. Yes, it was just a moment but there's so much depth and meaning in the exchange, right? Melissa then provides us with a 101 tutorial on Gestalt Therapy: who founded it, how it views human behavior, and the pillars of the therapeutic approach. We hear about Gestalt's emphasis on making meaning in our lives, dealing with interruptions, and the four ways we respond to others: introjection, projection, confluence, and retroflection. We conclude with hearing how Melissa's approach helps her clients become aware of their characterological patterns. It's all about awareness! Thank you for coming Melissa!
