Join us for a conversation with author and poet Dr. Edward Bruce Bynum as we talk about dreams and meditation as portals to the deep self. We start with the ideas that most of our big decisions are arrived at intuitively rather than logically and that consciousness predates language. Bruce argues that meditation and dreaming (and meditating while dreaming) can take us to a timeless place which is a way of accessing the deep self. Bruce then says there is recent evidence that death is not the end of conscious experience. After the break, we take a call from Kelly from Santa Cruz who asks about the roots of identity. Max in the studio then asks if we are truly different selves awake vs dreaming. Finally, we take a call from Elisabeth from Bellingham who suggests that deep inner work can heal mental illness. BIO: Edward Bruce Bynum, Ph.D., is an award-winning poet, clinical psychologist, and the author of six popular psychology books including Our African Unconscious and seven books of poetry, his latest being The Dead Sea Scrolls: Narratives of the Brotherhood. His most recent book is a lyrical novel of discovery and romance: A Thousand Years in the Body: A Novel of Love and Transcendence. Have you ever had a dream that lingered in your bones, even if you didn't fully understand it? One that wrapped around your heart like a warm shawl, whispering meaning even without words? In this soul-nourishing episode of the Dreamifesting podcast, I had the joy of basking—yes, basking!—in the radiant dreamlight with the luminous Katherine Bell, host of The Dream Journal Podcast and upcoming author of Dreams: The Treasure Hunt. Together, we explored the gentle art of simply being with our dreams, soaking in their glow before we rush to analyze them. Katherine shared a dream in which she found herself locked out of her podcast studio—until her inner child appeared beside her. When she reached out to take the little girl's hand, the doors opened wide, as if a red carpet had been rolled out just for them. Cue the goosebumps! And the tears. Because isn't it often our inner child who holds the keys to our most sacred spaces? Humanity balances between two paths: self-destruction or self-revelation. In this rebroadcast from a popular episode from April 2024, Christine Barrington describes this critical inflection point and argues that dreams awaken us to the realm of purpose and meaning, arguing that every one of us has much to contribute to the path of humanity. Christine begins with James Braid then outlines the complicated history of science and consciousness including how they got separated in the first place, culminating with the philosophy of positivism which is the belief nothing exists that cannot be verified. She notes in contrast that most of the giants of quantum theory were also mystics including Planck (mentioning his book Where Science is Going) and also Einstein, Schrödinger, Heisenberg, Bohr, and Pauli. On the thread of consciousness, she quotes Carl Jung and his work on the tension of the opposites and synchronicity, also Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ken Wilbur, and Joe Dispenza and the birth of neurophysiology and mindfulness. Christine brings it all together talking about Thomas Campbell and his book My Big TOE and his “theory of everything,” which argues that consciousness is the basis for everything and that we are here on this planet to learn and evolve that consciousness, one person at a time. She plays a quote of Campbell’s about how dreaming gives us information about our selves in that how we react in dreams is how we are. As we learn to be more living and present, then our dreams evolve too. Christine ends by sharing information about Thomas Campbell’s organization, the Center for the Unification of Science and Consciousness CUSAC.org. BIO: Christine Barrington has worked as a psychotherapist and transformational coach and is a seeker who has invested years searching for answers underlying the challenges of human existence. Dreams bridge the ordinary and the mystical world. Working with them can be alchemical. Today we welcome special guest poet, dream priestess, and counselor-in-training Alyssa Spungen. Alyssa starts by describing a lucid dream that opened to her the mystery of dreaming in which she was ritually presented with red and black squares. She talks about how difficult it is to express dreams in words and says that’s why she started expressing them in poetry. She talks about the alchemy of dreams and how they hep us recognize our inner mystic. She then talks about how writing poetry helped her get through her depression and after the break shares with us a poem about the seductiveness of depression. We talk about Natural Dreamwork, Embodied Experiential Dreamwork, and synchronicity and take a call from Elizabeth from Bellingham who shares a dream-inspired poem about her own growth and insight. BIO: Alyssa Spungen is a writer, a dreamer, and a counselor-in-training. She was born and raised in Lake County, Indiana and currently calls the Sonoran Desert home. Her first book of poetry will be published in May by the Phoenix esoteric publishing house White Stag Press. It's called Spiral Staircase: A Meditation on Alchemy. People’s dreams change before their behavior does. Our guests, Codreaming founders Emily Cook and Kyle Napierkowski share evidence from their research including how large databases show that dreams about Donald Trump shifted long before his favorability ratings did. They also talk about how dreams reveal that the concerns of people in their 20s and 30s are foundationally different from older people and the evidence that this is not merely because of their age, but because of generationally changing priorities. After the break, we take a call from Lee from New York who talks about his 50 years of dream records, and we get into a conversation about demographics and the ethics of dream collection. BIOS: As an Organizational Psychologist, Emily Cook pioneers integrating psychological science and dream analysis into business strategy. Her research is published in leading academic journals, and her work has been featured in The Independent, Financial Times, and Fox News. Kyle Napierkowski is a leader in ad-tech, AI, and data science, and has created data-driven impact for startups like PagerDuty and for large enterprises like Coca Cola and American Express. Dreams and death: Do dreams show us what it’ll be like to be dead? Our guest this week is Jenna Farr Ludwig. Jenna starts by describing two death dreams from childhood in one of which she dreamed of her mom falling off a cliff shortly before her mom died in a waking-life car wreck. We talk about pre-diagnosis dreams, dreams before death, visitation dreams, and about how to distinguish death dreams that are related to physical death vs death dreams that signal transformation and growth. We also talk about what dreams may have to say about what it will be like to be dead. After the break we hear from four listeners. First Lenore from Oakland gives examples of some dreams that have made her less frightened of dying. Then David Jenkins (episode link is below) from Berkeley talks about sequences of visitation dreams and about how they can evolve. Rick Kleffel, DJ radio engineer and music creator, comments that dreams may be a foretaste of death in that they are experiences we have in which the physical body plays little or no role. Third, Dylan calls from Florida to share some of his profound reincarnation dreams. Finally, Ray from Santa Cruz calls to ask about how to talk to loved ones who have passed away. Authors we talked about included Christopher Kerr, Robert Monroe, Edward Cayce, Carl Jung (Memories, Dreams, and Reflections), and Marie Louise von Franz. BIO: Jenna Farr Ludwig is a certified dream guide and spiritual mentor with a Master's of Arts in Transpersonal Studies and over 40 years of experience. What big-picture stuff do we miss out on as we work on our dreams one by one? Today's guest, Laura Hileman, talks about long term dream journaling and how we can use our dream journals to help us review the passing seasons of our lives. She share examples of how she recognized from her dreams that she had cancer long before the doctors diagnosed it. She encourages us to ask our dreams what they are longing for and says she finds it helpful to think of her day and night lives as being all one thing, like the “two” sides of a möbius strip. She then shares some ideas about dreams and spirituality and encourages us to ask what the third grader would say when we find ourselves getting too complicated in our dream analysis. After the break we take a call from Henny from Ontario CA who has a question about active imagination. Laura suggests that we look at Bob Hoss’s Six Magic Questions. We then take a call from Michelle from TN who asks what we are to make of all the weird composite figures that our dreams send us. We end with Laura giving more specific advice about how to record your dreams with an eye toward long term journaling. BIO: Laura has been a dreamworker and spiritual director for 25 years. Trained at the Haden Institute, she's mentored there and at Wisdom Tree Collective, where her dream course launches in September. Through her practice Fire by Night Dreamwork, Laura offers online dream groups, private sessions, and workshops on dream integration and spiritual practice. “Dreams are a doorway to the vast, inclusive world of unconscious images and connections.” So says today's guest, Dr. Apela Colorado of the Worldwide Indigenous Science Network. Truly a “Woman between the Worlds”, Dr. Colorado promotes an understanding between indigenous and modern world perspectives. Dr. Colorado starts by setting a ceremonial space using cedar and sacred music and offering an invocation. She describes the way she discovered the Circle of Listening she developed after a chance side trip to the Chartres Cathedral in France. This involves drawing the dreams that are shared, a process called glyphing which is often done by Katrina Arriola who also joined us for the show. Dr. Colorado speaks about how she learned to incorporate multiple ancestral lineages and encourages us to say “a dream came to me” rather than “I had a dream.” Katrina speaks about the importance of the communal experience in dream-sharing. After the break, we two calls. The first is from Ryan from Philadelphia who had attended one of the Chartres Dreamwork Events and describes how several of the participants had strikingly parallel dreams… all about him! The second call comes from Ellen of Santa Cruz who shares a dream featuring a monkey-like spirit and an old friend from Japan. BIO: Apela Colorado Ph.D., of Oneida-Gaul ancestry, has dedicated her life's work to bridge Western thought and indigenous worldviews. In 1989, she founded the Worldwide Indigenous Science Network which aims to (1) foster the revitalization, growth, and worldwide exchange of traditional knowledge, (2) safeguard the lives and work of the world's endangered indigenous culture practitioners, and (3) develop an interface with Western science. Founder of the Radical Resistance Institute, our guest today is Victor Lee Lewis. He brings a unique, socially progressive vision to the work of personal growth, personal empowerment, and emotional health. An early advocate of Jeremey Taylor, he is also profoundly influenced by his dreams. Victor starts by telling how a dream he had in the early 1980s woke him up to the need to radically remake his life. He sees dreams as a realm of oneness and says that dream groups are an ideal forum for bringing people together. We talk about about the idea of imaginal cells and also about how neuro-divergent people have the kind of “out of the box” thinking that we are in need of right now. After the break, we take call from Jenny from Santa Cruz in which she shares a dream that a friend sent her which highlights spiritual vs political action. Max asks Victor what to say to young people who are neuro divergent. We also take a call from Ray from Santa Cruz who has some further reflections on Jenny’s dream. Victor ends by talking about his passion for human liberation. Contact info: FB @VictorLeeLewis, or email me and I will get you in touch. Can doing your personal dreamwork really improve the world? In this popular replay, our guest, Christian Gerike, believes that the more people pay attention to their dreams, the better they will be, and thus the better the world will be. After the break we take a call from Cynthia from Sebastopol, CA who shares a dream about being kidnapped and taken to a retreat center which she discovers relates to her recent job loss. Christian then recommends Freud’s book, On Dreams, written for the lay audience, and he talks about how we here in the global West could learn from the many cultures that find much more value in dreaming than we do. He ends by argues that paying attention to your dreams can enhance your natural intuition. BIO: Christian Gerike writes and teaches in the field of dream studies. Do we have soul mates? Are there people in our lives today who we know from previous lives? Our guest today is lucid coach, Chris Cunniffe, and he describes his story. Chris starts by defining what he calls counterparts which are people we know from waking life who may be simultaneous incarnations of ourselves. He lists dream features to look for that suggest that the person you are dreaming about might be a soul counterpart. We talk about the idea that to the soul, time is an illusion and also have a discussion of what to do with this information. This show is about YOU!! No guests, just callers. What have you been dreaming about? What are your hopes for this coming year? This the first All Caller show in three years, and we take calls from four people, and together look for treasures in their dreams. Charlene from the CA Bay Area started us off with a dream about stepping away from a man who put his arm around her waist. This ultimately reminded her of her childhood experiences of a ghost on the Connecticut farm where she grew up. The second caller was from Elizabeth from Bellingham WA who shares that her brother has recently died. She shares a dream where she worries if others will have time for her but feels great connection to the ground while walking in her delicate shoes. After the break, Jennifer from Santa Cruz starts a conversation about dreams about society like Carl Jung’s dreams foreshadowing World War II. We also talk about the upcoming October regional conference in Santa Cruz at the Museum of Art and History and the June international conference which will be all-online (find out more and register at IASDconferences.org/2025/). Finally, at the last minute, Ray from Santa Cruz calls talking about his on-going quest to learn how to find guidance in his dreams. Steven E Popp is an avid dream enthusiast, dedicated to his inner world. Since he is also a gardener and a semi-retired horticulturist, perhaps it's inevitable that he is especially sensitive to the landscapes of his dreams, something most of us ignore. We talk about his sand table creations which he calls Dreamscapes (photos below). Plus we get into his Tibetan Dream yoga practice and meditation. After the break, we talk about lucid dreaming with Max, and then Steve tells us about his earliest dreams, some of which seem to date from before birth. Near the end of the show we take a call from Diane of Santa Cruz who also describes a dream that seems to date from before birth as well. BIO: Steven E. Our guest today is Lisa Rigge, IASD regional rep for the Bay Area and also Haden Institute graduate. We talk about collaging and also about IASD vs Haden dreamwork approaches. We start with ideas around collaging to find meaning from our dreams and in particular, the idea of using negative space. Lisa brings an intuitive and contemplative approach to collaging and also to our next topic: dream groups. We discuss some of the differences between how Jeremey Taylor and Bob Haden approach projective dream groups. The Haden approach emphasizes the idea of a safe container, personal boundaries, and privacy for the dreamer. After the break, we take a call from Lisa from Boston who starts a conversation about archetypes, anima/animus, and shadow. Also a graduate of the Haden Institute, Lisa from Boston talks about the idea of spiritual direction which she prefers to call spiritual companioning. We end with ideas from Lisa Rigge about poetry created out of dreams and also about the idea of a death haiku. BIO: Lisa Rigge has been involved with dream work for over 20 years. She received a Certificate in Dream Leadership from the Haden Institute and is an IASD Regional Rep for the Bay Area. Nightmares! We all have them, and some of us have more than a few. Are nightmares caused by trauma? How can we work past our nightmares and start to look forward to sleeping again? Our guest today is trauma specialist, Linda Schiller. She defines nightmares by the feeling tone in the dream and whether the dream situation improves or gets worse. We talk about the idea that we might not ever know the source of our nightmares especially if they were caused by trauma before we developed language including birth trauma and pre-birth trauma. She talks about the importance of creating a sense of safety in the dreamer, and then we spend the rest of the show talking about what you can do about nightmares before they happen, while they are happening, and after they happen. Linda will be offering a 3-hour zoom workshop Sunday January 12, 2025 from 1 to 4 pm ES through Haden Institute called “Understanding and Healing Nightmares Through Active Dreamwork.” You can register at the following link: Dwcooperative.com/services-6-1. He says, if we are tuned in and paying attention, difficult times can help us find meaning and shares stories about how the pandemic empowered people to better themselves. He describes meditation as stilling the mind and opening the heart and tells about his own story of how an alcohol problem led him to exactly the teacher he needed at the time. Forrest shares some of the powerful dreams and visions that have guided him through the years. We end with a discussion of “everyday gurus” and how we can find meaning in life by focusing on gratitude. Dreaming on certain days like birthdays and anniversaries can have special significance. For centuries, it has been thought that dreams between the Christian holidays of Christmas and Epiphany were especially propitious. Our guest, Susanne van Doorn, talks about what to look for in these Holy Night Dreams. She starts out by telling us of a nightmare that got her started with the idea that Holy Night dreams can help us prepare for the year to come. She talks about incubations and ancient healing temples that were centered around dreaming. After the break we take a call from Christian from Chico who shares a dream about a dusty radio receiver and a bottle of bland coke. BIO: Susanne van Doorn, MSc, is a Dutch therapist, an author, and a blogger. She gives courses in dreams and their symbology based on mythological themes. Our dream self is different in many ways from our waking self. They are often much more beleaguered and can behave differently than we imagine that our waking self would. Why is this important, and how can we help them? Our guest today is David Jenkins, PhD, clinical psychologist and author of “Dream RePlay: How to Transform Your Dream Life.” David shares an example of a dream of someone whose car is stuck in the mud and compares working with the image symbolically vs exploring the feelings of the dream self in their situation and giving them empathy and maybe even advice. We also talk about dream themes and how they change and how they parallel waking life themes which evolve as well. After the break we take a call from Jane from Santa Cruz who shares her series of dreams around her deceased mother and how they evolved as she came to terms with the reality of her passing. We then take a question from Max about how lucidity affects our definition of this dream self as different from our waking self. BIO: David Jenkins has a Ph.D. in clinical psychology and a masters in developmental psychology. He studied family therapy. Originally from Manchester, U.K., he has lived in California since 1973. Metaphors: they’re not just for dreaming anymore! Evidence shows that we think in them too. Our guest Dr. Alwin Wagener explains his embodied cognition theory of dreaming which explains how dreaming helps us update our metaphors to reflect our changing ideas about what matters to us most. We also talk about why exploring dreams in therapy is helpful and why therapists are often reluctant to do so. He offers the acronym SAFE which reminds therapists to explore dreams by encouraging clients to Share a dream, Appreciate the details of the dream, Find its significance to the client, and Edit the dream however the client would like. We also talk about Culturally Responsive Dreamwork which involves the therapist starting by finding out how the client already relates to their dreams. After the break, I share some intense dreams I have had since the presidential election involving a conversation on a city bus and a series of dreams about sliding down steep surfaces. Alwin guides me through an exploration of the images and feelings and draws out my associations. Ray from Santa Cruz calls in to offer his own dream of comfort. BIO: Alwin E. Wagener, PhD, LPC, NCC, is an Assistant Professor and Director of the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Dreamwork can be a useful tool to get to the root of subconscious limiting beliefs that negatively influence our experience of life. Our guest today is Jason Althaver, a life coach, and a dreamworker. Limiting beliefs, like self doubt, perfectionism, or imposter syndrome, can lead to anxiety and stress. Jason shares some of his dreams that demonstrate his limiting beliefs and have helped him break their hold over him. After the break, Briana from North Carolina asks about using lucid dreaming to work with limiting beliefs and shares a dream about being in a house surrounded by wolves. Dreams from the Other Side: Visitations, Dreaming with the Dead, and Scary Creatures from Unseen Realms. In this Day of the Dead special, our guest this week is Marta Aarli, a psychotherapist and dream guide in Colorado. This is the time of year when our ability to dream through the veil that separates this world from other realms increases. We may receive visits from loved ones who have crossed over or scary beings from unknown places, bringing terrifying messages or beautiful offerings, like a mystical version of trick or treat. How can we work with these in a way that opens up our consciousness while also protecting us from harm? There are several ways to approach the things that scare us. Just as our nervous system's first response to fear is generally fight, flight or freeze, our first emotional response to a scary dream may be to reject, deny or ignore it. The benefits from opening up scary dreams are often profound and healing gifts. We need courage to face them, as well as strong allies and protectors. We take live questions from Ray and Max. You can find out about the Death Café movement which is mentioned on the show at DeathCafe.com BIO: Marta Aarli, MA, LPC, is a psychotherapist and dream guide in Colorado. Our guest, Alaya Dannu, shares an important message for humanity which showed up in a dream she calls The Eternal Return in which the three ancient mothers (also called Ammas) made specific requests for how we can bring the world back into balance. Among their requests, they suggest that we can make our lives sacred starting by connecting with the body. After the break we take a call from Kimberly from Gilbert, Arizona about how to heal enough to get to the point of being able to access the sacred. Alaya recommends that we investigate our lineages and find supportive communities and also that we commit to movement practices and create sacred spaces in our homes. BIO: Alaya A. Dannu, MA, M.Ed. Can dream interpretation be manipulative? You bet! Our guest Gerette Buglion, of Living Cult Free, shares her experiences with 18 years in a dream cult. Gerette is passionate about reclaiming her own life and helping others to reclaim theirs. I start by reading a short passage from my book in progress about the vulnerability of dreamers when they ask for support around their dreams. Gerette tells two of her dreams and how they were interpreted by her ex-teacher in a way that belittled her tender nature. She goes on to tell a new dream in which someone negates her own vivid experience of seeing a white bear. After the break, we talk about gaslighting and how it can be healthy for people in relationship to have different perceptions. We end with Gerette talking about the clarifying nature that writing about a lived experience brings and describing the ongoing and drop-in writing groups that she offers, plus the upcoming online panel with guests Sarah Edmonson, Daniel Shaw and others Gerette is author of two books “An Everyday Cult” and “Writing to Reckon Journal.” BIO: Gerette Buglion wants to live in a world where cult leaders, narcissistic abusers, and manipulative marketing techniques are spotted, called out, and silenced, creating more opportunities for nourishing relationships to flourish. Her work as educator centers on liberation from coercive control and supporting the integrative power of writing for survivors of cultic relationships through Writing to Reckon™ programs. Treating dissociation with dreamwork. Today, meet psychotherapist Marilyn Manzi who treats women with acute stress disorder using what she calls dream psychotherapy. We answer an email question from Rissa about individuation. After the break we get more personal, and Marilyn talks about her self-care routine as a psychotherapist. We then take a call from Jenny from Santa Cruz who shares a dream about women on a boat which we look at as an example of a dream about individuation, At the end of the show, Marilyn turns the tables and asks about my history of learning to be a dream coach and about the book I am currently writing around dreamwork as a kind of treasure hunt. Could doing yoga while on psychedelics improve insight? What about yoga while lucid dreaming? Our guest, Henry Kandel, teaches what he calls “Ketamine-State Yoga” which he says improves healing outcomes, stokes creative flow, and cultivates spiritual experience. While ingesting an unintentionally large amount of ketamine while meditating, our guest discovered the value of doing spiritual practices while using psychedelics, and now he teaches it to others. When it comes to breaking patterns of depression or addiction, Henry says that the key to getting a healing effect is to have a spiritual or mystical experience whether meditating, having a lucid dream, or using psychedelics. He then touches into microdosing and how it can enhance noticing the dream-like nature of things. After the break we take two calls, the first is from Henry’s daughter Alice in Brooklyn who describes starting a lucid dreaming practice at age eight to help her deal with her troubling sleep paralysis. The second caller is Ellen from Soquel who shares some of her experiences of using Tibetan Dream Yoga practices to enhance lucid dreaming. At the end of the show, Henry speculates why mystical experiences are emotionally healing. BIO: Henry Kandel is a science teacher and yogi living in Brooklyn. He has studied diverse forms of yoga for over 30 years including Tibetan Dream and Sleep Yoga from Tenzin Wangyal and Chongtul Rinpoche. When should you do the opposite of what you usually do? Today we share a popular replay about lucid dreaming, shadow work, and dream yoga with Chris Cunniffe. Chris had been a lawyer for 8 years when he had a dream which nudged him onto a more spiritual path. In the dream, Chris was at a Milli Vanilli conference which led him to wonder about what part of his life was a false front. Chris urges us to consider “doing the opposite”. For example: dreaming is meaningless; consider that it might be meaningful. Nightmares are bad and should be avoided; perhaps they are helpful. I should run away from that monster in my dream; maybe I should turn towards it. Chris gives examples of using this idea with shadow dream figures. We then speak about treating waking life as a lucid dream including connecting with those cartoon-like figures we encounter over and over. I got some personal ahas from this discussion about my own trouble delegating tasks. We end by talking about the idea that some of the people we meet in our dreams are counterparts or soulmates. BIO: Chris is a graduate of Holy Cross College (1993) and Harvard Law School (1996). He has a career background as an entrepreneur in both law and real estate. In 2015, Chris founded Lucid Coaching, LLC, as a creative vehicle for offering coaching services to clients and for publishing articles and videos about dreams, personal development, and spirituality. Chris currently serves as a board member and volunteer facilitator at Bliss Spiritual Co-op, a Charleston based retreat center, where he facilitates discussion groups about dreams and other topics. Professor Bargdill argues that every time we dream, our soul gets schooled! He says dreams prepare us for the future and reflect back to us our past, giving us a chance to make different choices in the future. We talk about what he calls dream inversions in which dreams turn the tables on us and let us know what others feel about how we behave with them. Also he argues that positive dreams are not wish fulfillment but are encouragements for us to keep going. He describes what he calls nightmirths, which are pleasant dreams that we wake up from smiling. After the break, we take a call from Kai from Miami who shares a dream about seeing her name on a tombstone that helped her understand that she had made the right choice about attending graduate school. We then talk about death dreams and sex dreams, and Richard ends by suggesting that dreams are helping us prepare big changes in the human race. Our guest has hosted hundreds of patients on ketamine-assisted psychedelic trips and has gone on a few of his own, yet his experience is that dreamwork can be even more profound. Dr. Darren Jakubec is an emergency-room anesthetist and runs a pain clinic in northern British Columbia. Jake talks about his history with dreaming and inner work and then gives an example of working a dream with a pain clinic patient. He describes his experience with a ketamine clinic which he ran for several years, describing psychedelics as an inner work accelerant which uses much of the same language as dreaming. After the break we take a dream share from Steve Popp, co-host of the “In the Garden” program which precedes the Dream Journal on Saturday mornings on KSQD. The dream features powerful spiritual themes which leads us into Jake giving his analogy about psychedelics vs dreaming which he summarizes as fire hose vs garden hose. We take a second dream from Elizabeth from Bellingham WA of a chaotic car trip with a problematic loved one. Books mentioned during the show: The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk, How to Change Your Mind by Michael Pollan, and various work by Gabor Mate. He also mentions the Curable app for dealing with chronic pain. BIO: Darren Jakubec, M.D., is trained in family medicine and in anesthesia and lives and practices in northern British Columbia. Darren has been a dreamworker for 12 years and practices dreamwork in his pain clinic, in his ketamine clinic, in the emergency room, and in the hallways and rooms of the hospital where he works. We speak with poet Renzo Del Castillo about building connections and empathy through creation, art, integrity, and love. Renzo is the author of the award-winning, best-selling debut poetry book “Still” (available in Kindle version for 99 cents). The poems that make up the book were conceived during a time of many losses including the death of his father. We talk about how we are each made up of pieces of the people we love and so they still live in us. After the break, Max asks about the idea that we can see things in our dreams that we have never seen before and how that can open us to possibilities in waking life. We talk about how travel, dreaming, and poetry all create empathy and about being immigrants into our own dream worlds. Are you ready for a dream revolution? If our guest Dr. Catherine Shainberg reads it right, this could be as big as the 16th century reformation. In this replay from 2022, Catherine starts by describing how she was told as a child to stop “dreaming her life away”, and yet here she is now with a full-time career of teaching people through the School of Images to bring more imagination into their lives. Dr. Shainberg offers to explore Katherine’s recent dream of a mysterious and apparently unstable stone edifice. She associates the wall with my recent feelings of anxiety and encourages me to erase the image. She helps me to find a new image to replace it. We then speak about how the modern world floods us with images so that our inner faculty for imagination is atrophied. Catherine says that dreams show us the truth of our current situation which isn’t always a pretty picture and so our dreams are not always peaceful. She describes that we are in the midst of a Dream Revolution in which we are finally realizing that mental processes are not enough to solve our problems. In the final segment, Ray calls in from Santa Cruz, and Dr. Shainberg leads him on a visualization to help him discover which of his burning questions are the most important. BIO: Catherine Shainberg, Ph.D., is an internationally renowned transpersonal psychologist, lecturer, teacher, visionary, and award-winning author. Grounded in the Kabbalah of Light, her work integrates timeless wisdom with modern Western traditions to catalyze creative manifestation at all levels, in all areas of life – personal and professional, communal and global. She created the School of Images® based on her profound realization about the power of images to create, manifest and transform. As a master of this work, she has developed an approach and body of techniques using dreams, images and inner gazing to communicate with our subconscious and change our lives. Can doing your personal dreamwork really improve the world? Our guest this week, Christian Gerike, believes that the more people pay attention to their dreams, the better they will be, and thus the better the world will be. Christian considers himself a dream generalist and is committed to spreading enthusiasm for dreamwork. He argues that working with your dreams helps you learn to look beneath appearances in the world both dreaming and awake. He shares a dream of his in which a mouse needs his help because it is wrapped up in an electronic cord. Throughout this episode, we cover a wide range of important dream fundamentals including the value of dream groups and the “if it were my dream” approach, dream puns, animals in dreams, associations, amplification, and archetypes as well as manifest vs latent content. He taught dream psychology for several years at Sonoma State University. Recent publications in the IASD DreamTime magazine discuss dream circles and metaphors. When your mind doesn’t generate images, how does that affect your dreaming? Aphantasia affects as much as 5% of the population. Are you an aphant? Our guest is Paulina Trevena, PhD. Picture an apple. What do you see? Paulina starts out by taking us through a few tests to gauge our ability to visualize. People fall onto a spectrum of ability to make images in their minds. Often aphants can create other sensations in their minds but some think primarily in words only. Interestingly, this neuro-divergence (sometimes called image-free thinking) is often linked to SDAM, a severely deficient autobiographical memory. Like many aphants, Paulina does have vivid dream images and her dreams are often wild, but she cannot picture the dreams once she awakens. After the break we take a call from Donna Glee Williams who tells us about her experiences with an aphant in one of her dream groups. We talk about aphantic visual artists and strategies for hypnotic induction with aphants. She ends by describing PTSD for aphants and then speculates on a possible connection between ADHD and aphanatasia. Paulina’s webpage is still in progress but should be available in a few weeks at PaulinaTrevena.com. In the mean time you can contact her through social media at: FB: @NoWooWooLady, LI: @DrPaulinaTrevena, or X: @paulina_trevena Here are some resources for aphants: Aphantasia.com and https://www.facebook.com/groups/aphantasiaandhypnosis BIO: Paulina Trevena, PhD, is a hypnotherapist, educator, and researcher. After years in academic research, Paulina discovered the fascinating world of hypnosis and was hooked! However, Paulina found her aphantasia was a barrier to accessing hypnosis. This led her to research and now educate on best practice in working with aphantasics.
