Tuesday, the show was centered around the hypothetical idea of the Lakers trading Anthony Davis. Why they ought to at least consider it, how it might help LeBron James and what kinds of packages they should look for. (Especially when trading Russell Westbrook is/should be a higher priority.) It's a thought exercise as much as anything—the Lakers are very unlikely to actually move him—but gets to the challenge of this offseason. It elicited a lot of reaction, which kicks off Wednesday's episode as well. People thought it was a great idea or a monumentally stupid one, with very little in the middle. Which gets to how complicated the repair job is for the Lakers. There is no clear path, it's a bunch of options all muddy and overgrown. Wouldn't they be better off just rolling with the core they have, asks one listener to Locked On Lakers on YouTube? Very possibly! But possibly, not, too. Meanwhile, reports from Sam Amick at The Athletic suggest the Lakers are talking to potential head coaching candidates about how they'd use Westbrook this season. Fans reacted poorly, but it would be malpractice not to have a plan for him, as a player, on the floor. He could be here, for sure, and if he is the Lakers need at least to try and use him. Finally, LeBron really doesn't like being out of the playoff spotlight. He did a Q/A this week, and while the results were relatively mild, the fact he did it at all was revealing. What would you want to ask him if given the opportunity? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Reacting to listener reaction about the concept of trading Davis. SEGMENT 2: Fans are upset the Lakers are talking to coaching candidates about Westbrook. SEGMENT 3: LeBron's Q/A, and inability to chillax while the playoffs go on. Proposing better questions that should have been asked. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! When he was drafted late in the first round of the 2019 NBA Draft, some experts called Jordan Poole — the Golden State Warriors' selection — the worst pick of the draft. Three years later, Poole has emerged as a bona fide star, and provided the already talent-rich Warriors with another potent offensive threat. The Athletic's Sam Amick recently spoke with Poole about his rise to stardom, and Sam joins us to talk about Poole's remarkable ascent, and what lies ahead for the Warriors in this year's NBA Playoffs. After news that Phil Jackson was advising the Lakers on who to hire as the team's next head coach was a topic of conversation, reports that some people connected to the team might not be happy about it. Is it LeBron James/Rich Paul, who have clashed with Jackson before? Rob Pelinka? Agents? Other players? Why is it problematic that the Lakers seem to have so many important voices who aren't on the payroll? And oh, by the way, Jackson is reportedly a big Russell Westbrook fan. Might his involvement increase the chances Westbrook returns? Because Lakers fans should understand there's a very real possibility Westbrook could return next season. The Lakers might find it hard to move him in a deal that doesn't hurt them, first and foremost, and if he's back it makes sense (or could) to try and make things work on the court before just paying him to go away. Westbrook might have a vested interest in playing and restoring some of his rep, and the Lakers could perhaps use the talent. Not saying it will happen—ideally, it seems both parties would prefer a quick divorce—just that everyone (Lakers included) needs to prepare for a different outcome. Finally, Sam Amick of The Athletic reports the Lakers are ok with the idea of going year to year with LeBron, should he choose not to sign an extension this summer. How might this arrangement benefit both sides? It could, but requires everyone to understand the arrangement very clearly. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Who might be upset that Phil Jackson has a hand in the coaching search? And why? SEGMENT 2: Why Russell Westbrook could return to the team next season. LeBron James has spent a great deal of his time in Los Angeles fighting significant injuries. He's been told to stay off that bad ankle this spring/summer for at least a month, probably more. So with all that in mind, and his advancing age and tremendous NBA mileage, it's at least worth contemplating the risks of offering him a $90-plus million extension this summer. But this week, Sam Amick of The Athletic wrote an interesting story that asks the other side of the same question: Would LeBron automatically accept an offer from the Lakers (as everyone assumes the organization will do)? What are the reasons LeBron might turn them down? What might have changed about his perception of the franchise? Is it really any different now than it was when he signed with them originally? When he signed his first extension with the team? Finally, everyone (James included) poked fun at the Timberwolves for, let's call it an extremely enthusiastic celebration following Minnesota's win over the Clippers Tuesday night, making them (officially) the NBA's 7-seed in the Western Conference playoffs? Should people lay off? Should Minny be a little more measured? And most importantly, what does that outlook (nothing matters save a title!) do for fans? How can it screw up a team like the Lakers going forward? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Would LeBron James automatically accept a second contract extension if the Lakers offer it? SEGMENT 2: Why might LeBron be reticent about committing to L.A. beyond next season? Is it possible for everyone to benefit by going year-to-year with LBJ? SEGMENT 3: Let the Wolves have fun, people! Plus, how the "Everything that's not a ring is failure!" can be toxic for a team in the situation the Lakers face today. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! As we all settle into the Lakers' offseason, big questions - and there are many - rumors and reports are already circulating about the direction the team might go in replacing Frank Vogel. One nugget reported by Sam Amick at The Athletic? LeBron James would be interested in the Lakers hiring former Warriors/current ESPN broadcaster Mark Jackson. Now, this is highly unikely (Jackson was a rumored candidate after the Lakers canned Luke Walton, and even when the Cavs fired David Blatt), but the concept raises interesting questions about how the Lakers need to approach the coaching search. Because while Jackson is hardly the perfect candidate, that guy doesn't exist. It's very unlikely the Lakers will have access to the creme de la creme of uber-elite coaching options. So they need to be very clear on what they want, why, and who can deliver on their top priorities. From there, they have to match that coach with a roster that accentuates those strengths. That certainly didn't happen this season. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Stanley Johnson's exit interview revealed a lot about how the Lakers mismatched players and roles. Getting the right mindset to play the right role isn't always easy for decorated pros. SEGMENT 2: Johnson also noted how skillsets on the Lakers didn't quite mesh, either. Understanding why, and getting a more coherent construction for next year's roster, is critical. SEGMENT 3: The Lakers seem (very, very) unlikely to hire Jackson, but just the idea raises all kinds of interesting questions about what the Lakers would look for in their next coach.
