“I was at the lowest point, I didn't know what I wanted. I didn't even know if I wanted to be alive at the time.” Michael Carter-Williams Former NBA star  In this powerful episode of The Pivot Podcast, former NBA Rookie of the Year Michael Carter-Williams sits down with Ryan Clark, Fred Taylor, and Channing Crowder to share the untold story of his journey through the highs and lows of professional basketball, the quiet moments that almost broke him and uncovering resilience. From instant stardom to injury setbacks and battling to stay in the league, Micheal opens up on how he found the mental toughness needed to keep pushing when the world counted him out and shares how he found peace and joy again. From rock bottom back up to the fullest he's been in his life, Michael talks about the pressure of early success, the lessons learned from adversity, and how fatherhood and personal growth reshaped his mindset both on and off the court. This conversation is raw and honest about identity, perseverance, and finding purpose beyond the sport. He reflects on growing up in a wealthy town but not having wealth, navigating the feeling of being an outsider in both predominantly white and Black spaces, and how basketball became his outlet.   Michael takes the guys through the surreal moment of winning Rookie of the Year with the 76ers, only to be traded the next season. He opens up about being coached by his childhood idol Jason Kidd, their fallout, the challenges of bouncing between five teams in five years, and the mental toll of trying to live up to high expectations.   At one of the lowest moments in his life, Michael reveals how he lost both his NBA job and his fiancé in the same week, sending him into deep depression and self-doubt. He admits there was a time he didn't even know if he wanted to be alive. But through therapy, self-reflection, and rediscovering his purpose, he found his way back, eventually re-earning the trust of his now-wife and securing a two-year deal with the Orlando Magic.   Transitioning into the next phase of his life, Michael talks about his role as an ESPN analyst, the importance of teaching athletes about business, and why mental health is still taboo in NBA locker rooms. He hopes to change that narrative by starting real conversations something he wishes had been available to him earlier in his career.   This episode of the Pivot is about survival, self-worth, and embracing the journey, no matter how unpredictable it gets. Michael Carter-Williams' story proves that success isn't defined by awards or contracts, but by the ability to fight through adversity, rebuild, and come back stronger than before. [03:45] DIANNA RUSSINI JOINS THE SHOWMultiple teams have reportedly reached out to the Bengals to inquire about trading for wide receiver Tee Higgins. Cincinnati has remained firm in their stance on Higgins, but with trade interest growing, will they eventually make a move? Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf has reportedly requested a trade, with the team setting a high asking price of a first- and third-round pick. With rumors swirling about a potential trade involving Joey Bosa, what kind of market does the star pass rusher have? [15:24] DOES SGA HAVE THE MVP LOCKED UP?Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been on an absolute tear, setting a record for the fewest games between his first and fourth 50-point performances with just 19. His scoring dominance has propelled the Oklahoma City Thunder to a Western Conference-best 50-11 record, making him the clear frontrunner for MVP. He currently leads the league in both points per game (32.6) and total points (1,957). With SGA now sitting at -650 odds to win the award, is there any real competition left for the MVP, or is it already locked up? [26:20] SHOULD COOPER FLAGG RETURN TO DUKE?During Duke's final home game of the season, fans erupted into chants urging Cooper Flagg to "run it back" for another year. Flagg seemed to acknowledge the moment, raising his finger as if signaling his return, while his father made the same gesture in the stands. Reports suggest that Flagg could consider withdrawing from the 2025 NBA Draft if he is unhappy with the team that lands the No. 1 overall pick. With his NIL deals already totaling $4.8 million, making him the highest-paid college player, does he actually have a reason to stay at Duke for another year? [37:25] JASON KIDD ON KYRIE IRVING'S INJURYKyrie Irving was playing heavy minutes in the weeks leading up to his injury, averaging 39.3 per game—more than any other player in that span. After Irving went down, Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd pushed back against any criticism regarding the team's handling of his workload, calling the injury a "freak accident." Is Kidd right to dismiss concerns about overuse, or is this a sign that the Mavericks are mismanaging their stars? With Irving sidelined, how much trouble is Dallas in for the rest of the season? [40:33] THIS, THAT, AND THE THIRD THIS: LED FLOORS IN SPORTSA futuristic LED court recently went viral, sparking debate over whether this technology could become a staple in professional sports. THAT: THE $87K "CHEETOZARD" AUCTIONThe sports memorabilia world has seen some wild purchases over the years, but this might take the cake. Strap in and try to keep up, as we attempt to follow the peripatetic 58-year journey of one of the NBA's most wandering franchises - with New York-area sports beat reporter Rick Laughland ("A History of the Nets: From Teaneck to Brooklyn"). Today's Brooklyn Nets club began its life in 1967 as the New Jersey Americans - a charter member of the American Basketball Association, playing at the Teaneck Armory.  A year later, they moved to Long Island (LI Arena, then Island Garden, then Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum) to become the New York Nets, winning two ABA championships (1974, 1976) behind superstar Julius Erving.  Absorbed into the NBA in 1976, the team struggled financially and was forced to sell Erving, leading to early-season struggles. In 1977, they relocated to the Garden State as the New Jersey Nets, playing at Rutgers Athletic Center (now Jersey Mike's Arena) before moving to Brendan Byrne (aka Meadowlands) Arena in 1981.   After almost becoming the "Swamp Dragons" in 1994, the early 2000s saw breakthrough success with Jason Kidd, Kenyon Martin, and Richard Jefferson - making back-to-back NBA Finals runs in 2002 and 2003.  Before a brief move to Newark's Prudential Center (2010–12), the team relocated to Brooklyn's purpose-built Barclays Center, with a complete franchise name, logo and color-scheme rebrand.  Initially building around Deron Williams, they later pursued star power with Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, followed by Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and James Harden in 2019–2021. Still bereft of an elusive NBA title, will the Nets continue to ply their trade in Brooklyn - or will they eventually return to their nomadic ways? + + +    SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable "Good Seats" Merch: https://www.teepublic.com/?ref_id=35106 SPONSOR THANKS (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): Old School Shirts.com (10% off promo code: GOODSEATS) https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats Royal Retros (10% off promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2   BUY THE BOOK (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): " A History of the Nets: From Teaneck to Brooklyn": https://amzn.to/41oxSev FIND AND FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/goodseatsstillavailable.com X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/

Dallas Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison said he “understands the magnitude” of the mega-trade he just pulled Sunday, sending Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis, but he defended the move by insisting it improved his team's culture. “It's important to know that (Dallas coach Jason) Kidd and I are aligned and we talk about archetypes and we talk about the culture we want to create,” Harrison said Sunday, seated next to Kidd before the Mavericks' game in Cleveland. “There are levels to it, and there are people that fit the culture, and there are people that come in and add to the culture,” Harrison continued. “Those are two distinct things and I believe the people that are coming in are adding to the culture.”

In this episode we discuss the Mavs' 115-114 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, their 10th loss in the last 15 games. The game was perhaps overshadowed by the devastating news that Dereck Lively will miss 2-3 months with a stress fracture in his ankle, adding to this “season from hell” which has seen several Mavs starters suffer significant injuries. We talk about how this news changes the expectations for this season and how it might alter their approach to the trade deadline in two weeks. We also share our thoughts on the strengths and weaknesses of Jason Kidd as a coach and how he may not be elevating the team to their full potential during this depleted stretch. Finally we debate where the Mavs should consider punting on this season and focusing on draft positioning.
