Today's word of the day is ‘fourth' as in the fourth month as in the fourth coach as in the Suns as in Mat Ishbia as in Mike Budenholzer. One season and he's gone. Just like Frank Vogel. Most expensive team in the NBA and Durant, Booker, and Beal couldn't make the play-in. Ishbia can't help himself! (14:50) The Pelicans have fired David Griffin. He put all his eggs in the Zion Williamson basket and it failed. (23:15) World Baseball Classic time is here. Well, it's next year, but Aaron Judge was just announced as captain of Team USA. This will be his debut! (35:00) Review: Princess Cyd. (38:00) NPPOD. (45:20) Messi is MLS. MLS needs Messi. US Soccer needs Messi. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Phoenix Suns vs. LA Clippers NBA Betting Pick Prediction 10/23/2024 by Tony T. Suns at Clippers—Allen and Lee are probable. Okogie is out for Phoenix. Leonard, Tucker and Bamba are out for LA. Phoenix finished at 49-37 last year. Mike Budenholzer takes over for the departed Frank Vogel. The Suns need to get more shots off from three because that is their strength. The key to the success for the Suns to have Beal, Durant and Booker on the court together. Tyus Jones was added this season. Budenholzer is a defensive minded coach. LA finished at 53-35 last season. Exiting the team are Paul George and Russell Westbrook. After a procedure on his knee, it looks like Leonard will miss multiple games to start the year. The Clippers took to free agency to try and find the scoring lost from George, but the list is not too impressive.
Jody raves about a magnificent Thursday night in sports. Plus, Bradley Beal talks the environment of the Phoenix Suns training camp!
Jusuf Nurkić discusses if Mike Budenholzer is more vocal than Frank Vogel, his love for Arizona and if his dad actually beat up 14 guys.

On the latest PHNX Suns Podcast, Espo and Gerald Bourguet will give their top 10 reasons to be excited for the Phoenix Suns' 2024-25 season! Suns Media Day is still a few weeks away, but the upcoming 2024-25 NBA season should be a fun one for Phoenix fans. From Devin Booker and Kevin Durant carrying over their Olympic success to a more concrete role for Bradley Beal, the Big 3 should be more dangerous than ever. Tyus Jones and Monte Morris will provide the Suns with actual point guards, and Grayson Allen moving to a sixth man role will be fun to watch too. Between Allen, Morris, Royce O'Neale, Bol Bol, Mason Plumlee and two new rookies in Ryan Dunn and Oso Ighodaro, the Suns should have more bench depth as well, along with a new G League squad in the Valley Suns to develop younger guys like Jalen Bridges, Collin Gillespie and TyTy Washington. Phoenix still has an open roster spot to fill as well, and going from Frank Vogel to head coach Mike Budenholzer should help the Suns play random and take more 3-pointers. Today I talked to Ben Kaplan about his new book (co-authored with Danny Parkins) Pipeline to the Pros: How D3 Small-College Nobodies Rose to Rule the NBA (Triumph Books, 2024). Jeff Van Gundy. Brad Stevens. Frank Vogel. Mike Budenholzer. Tom Thibodeau. Sam Presti. Leon Rose. Before you knew his name, before he drafted your favorite player, before he guided your team to a championship, he had a playing career of his own at an NCAA Division III college. He didn't play for fortune – the NBA was out of reach, and his school didn't even give athletic scholarships. He didn't play for fame – his games weren't televised, and the stands were rarely full. Whatever the motivation, he simply couldn't give up the game of basketball. And that didn't change after graduation, when it was time to pick a career path. For the first time in league history, NBA coaches and general managers are just as likely to have played Division III basketball as they are to have played in the NBA. While the number of former D3 players working in the NBA is higher than ever, small college alums have served in leadership positions since the league's founding. They shaped the NBA into what it is today, playing integral roles in the Lakers' initial success in Los Angeles, the inception of several expansion franchises, the creation of the popular All-Star Weekend dunk contest, the globalization of the league, and more. Their improbable and inspiring journeys tell a bigger story – the history of small college athletics, the evolution of coaching and management in the NBA, and the hiring practices in the most competitive fields. Their alma maters were small, but their impact on the game, and the implications of their success, loom large. Paul Knepper covered the New York Knicks for Bleacher Report. His first book, The Knicks of the Nineties: Ewing, Oakley, Starks and the Brawlers That Almost Won It All was published in 2020. Thursday was a busy one on the NBA coaching carousel, which is obviously a matter of import for the Lakers. First, Charlotte hired Charles Lee, a top assistant on Boston's staff and long seen as a name to watch in coaching circles. He was on LA's list, but not seen as a priority candidate by most reports. Meanwhile, in Phoenix, Mike Budenholzer is set to become the Suns' next head coach, again, taking a name of interest off LA's list. And why is Budenholzer heading there? Because former Lakers head coach Frank Vogel was canned. So in a thin coaching market, could Vogel be a real candidate for the gig? Would the Lakers actually consider bringing him back? Should they? What about the other guys? Would Vogel make more sense than a first time head coach (Adelman, Nori) or a first time any kind of coach (JJ Redick)? Is there a philosophical through line that can be identified that runs through any of these guys? And what about internal support? The Lakers, of late, haven't done a great job of supporting their coaches through challenging times. They actively undercut Vogel, and don't seem to have worked to try and smooth out the issues internally when Darvin Ham hit some real bumps this season. Are you confident in the process? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Frank Vogel is back on the market. Should the Lakers inquire? SEGMENT 2: How Vogel is an inkblot test that helps contextualize every other option. WHAT'S TAKING SO LONG? While not exactly the sentiment of every Lakers fan... it's the sentiment of many when it comes to the expected dismissal of Darvin Ham from his gig with the Lakers. After all, reports following LA's Game 5 loss to the Nuggets earlier in the week suggested Ham's job was all but gone. Subsequent reports say the Lakers are still moving down that path, potentially as early as the end of the week. Which, to be clear, is basically today. So if they know they want to do it, and are continuing to leak that they're going to do it... why haven't they done it? Well, one reason might be the fallout from the last time they fired a coach. You may remember the Lakers received some flak, and lost out on opportunities to interview desired candidates, after they leaked that Frank Vogel was out and it was reported basically at the buzzer of their final game, before Frank Vogel even reached the podium. So, hey, don't do that again! But is this way any better, whether to be respectful to Ham or to burnish the team's reputation? What could they be doing, beyond PR and news cycle management? Certainly the Lakers ought to be doing due diligence, making sure they like potential candidates out there more than they like the idea of trying to make it work with Ham. After all, the guy did have a reasonably promising first season before things went south this year, and isn't far off from being one of the more sought after head coaching candidates out there. Maybe they're double checking with all the critical stakeholders not only about whether they're ok with Darvin going, but also what type of coach would make sense to replace him, and whether that hypothetical coach would be available. So maybe all of these things are happening, but if the Lakers have their minds made up, they ought to get it done sooner rather than later. Meanwhile, is all of this attention on Ham fair? Some hoops minds think he's getting too much criticism for how the team's season turned out. And does all of this distract from criticism Rob Pelinka should be getting?
