It was a busy weekend for Darvin Ham as he fills out his coaching staff. Multiple reports say the Lakers will hire Chris Jent, a longtime assistant who has worked both with Ham in Atlanta and LeBron James in Cleveland, for a lead assistant position. What does he bring? Meanwhile Quinton Crawford, a very well regarded young coach who Ham had hoped to keep from Frank Vogel's staff, will be joining Jason Kidd in Dallas. As for more names... how about Rasheed Wallace? When asked about 'Sheed, long rumored to be coming to LA, Ham told Rich Eisen he could "neither confirm nor deny" that was a thing, but said it with a laugh and noted he's a candidate for sure. What would adding Wallace mean for Anthony Davis? Finally, on a recent podcast the great Kevin O'Connor of The Ringer noted that the Lakers have some interest in Washington star Bradley Beal, who has said he has made a decision about his future... but isn't quite ready to share? Would that decision be "go to LA?" Probably not, but even the hypothetical trade - Russell Westbrook, two first round picks and basically anything else the Wizards demanded the Lakers throw in - is fascinating given the context of the Lakers roster, their other available assets, and everything they've been through over the last couple of years. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers will hire Chris Jent to be Darvin Ham's lead assistant. SEGMENT 2: If the Lakers bring in Rasheed Wallace, what impact could that have on Anthony Davis? SEGMENT 3: Would Westbrook-for-Beal be a good idea? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Anthony Davis was back at the facility Tuesday, working with the famous/infamous "Lethal Shooter," a somewhat controversial shooting coach who has worked with a bunch of NBA players, including some current Lakers. So you now have a fairly comical situation where fans were upset that he hadn't been shooting, and now are upset at who he's shooting with. And meanwhile, LeBron James, famous for subtweeting teammates on a variety of issues, has spent the week posting to social media all kinds of excited motivational messages about next season, including workout videos. So is A.D.'s public return to the gym a response to LeBron's social posts? Probably not! But that folks are asking the question reflects the levels of angst people feel about the team and Davis in particular after a first round playoff exit was followed by the tire fire of the 2021-22 season. More potential angst comes from James and his extension. Is he going to sign it? Might he tip his hand in a way that would be useful to the Lakers as they get into the Draft and free agency? As they consider trades? Because there's a big difference in how you act as a franchise if you know he's around vs. if you're just not quite sure. Finally, many are asking whether Darvin Ham is the right guy to get the most out of Russell Westbrook. Certainly he has qualities of leadership, respect and communication that give him as good a shot as anyone, and simply not being Frank Vogel will make a difference... but ultimately is this a question that's less about Ham and more about Westbrook? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Anthony Davis is back in the gym... and the controversy doesn't quite end. SEGMENT 2: Is LeBron subtweeting Davis? And what happens if the Lakers don't really know if he's going to sign that extension this summer? What impact does it have on the team's strategy? The Utah Jazz Coaching search continues and the number 1 comment I hear from people is no retread head coach. Why not? Is there data that says that retread head coaches aren't successful, because in most lots of life we get better at things the more we try them and experience is thought to be a benefit not a hindrance. Frank Vogel, the NBA Champion head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, is on the Jazz coaching list and we look at his career with the Indiana Pacers, the Orlando Magic and the Los Angeles Lakers. He had amazing success in Indiana and won a title in Los Angeles however, there is one thing that must be answered in his career, where is the offense? Donovan Mitchell is hanging with Jimmy Butler in Miami, Rudy Gobert is boxing, never wearing a shirt and sending out trippy sayings. What to make of the Utah Jazz stars off-season. Steph Curry is the difference maker but can the Golden State Warriors get to the rim enough to beat the Boston Celtics, 0:00: Open 3:00: Why no on retread head coaches? 7:00: Jason Terry and Sean Sweeney are added to the list 12:00: Frank Vogel is tied to Rick Pitino and Jim O'Brien 14:00: Frank Vogel in Indiana 18:00: Where is Frank Vogel's offense 24:00: Steph Curry in the Finals 27:00: Donovan in Miami 28:30: Rudy boxing and trippy quotes Learn more about your ad choices. Locked On Lakers - Daily Podcast On The Los Angeles Lakers

Three-plus years ago, the Lakers introduced Frank Vogel as head coach in a press conference where he was an afterthought, thanks to a missed postseason, Magic Johnson's abrupt departure, Luke Walton's firing, coaching search shenanigans, and more. Later today (Monday), Darvin Ham will be introduced to replace Vogel, and while the team is hardly in a perfect place, there should be at least less overall angst. That should help make the day one of greater optimism, where Ham will have the opportunity to really make an impression on the city and his future players. What should Lakers fans want to hear from Ham? What are the most interesting questions that could be asked in order to get a feel for who he might become as head coach. And once everyone is done with Darvin, what questions are there for Rob Pelinka, who still hasn't spent a ton of time addressing Lakers media (and by extension, Lakers fans)? Of course, Ham's success will depend a lot on the roster he's given. There is still a ton of mystery in that regard, given how many holes the team has to fill. One player (presumably) returning next season is Austin Reaves. He was a great surprise this year, but was also the beneficiary of low expectations and being a bright spot amidst a raging tire fire surrounding him. What can the Lakers expect from Reaves? Is he a starter? A high class reserve? Someone who, on a more successful team, might not be worthy of as much playing time? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Monday's press conference introducing Darvin Ham will look a lot different than the one introducing Frank Vogel, and that's a very good thing for the Lakers. SEGMENT 2: What would you ask Ham? What would you want to hear in response? SEGMENT 3: Evaluating Austin Reaves. How does he fit into the rotation next season? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Why it was a good move from the video room to the bench — taking a coaching role with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants. “You don't have the rewind button any more.” What his experience has been like working under Hall of Fame coach Marianne Stanley. How the women's game is more of a tactical game. Realities of the WNBA — short season, small rosters (12) and just 12 teams, now due for expansion. Other names have dominated the conversation (including on this podcast) but quietly, former Portland head coach Terry Stotts has become the odds-on favorite to be hired as the next head coach of the Lakers. And while he wouldn't qualify as a particularly exiting hire, the 64-year old Stotts has a reputation for designing good offenses and led the Blazers to a near-decade of uninterrupted playoff appearances. Then again, those Portland teams hit a wall, and Stotts was fired. So would he be a good replacement for Frank Vogel, working with (presumably) LeBron James and Anthony Davis (and, at least for now, Russell Westbrook)? Mike Richman, host of Locked On Blazers, joins the show to break down all things Stotts. Plus, how many teams around the league would switch circumstances with the Lakers? Like, coach, GM, owner, roster, cap situation, draft capital and so on? Basically everything save city, building and uniforms? Are the Blazers in a better spot than the Lakers? Richman weighs in. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Scouting Terry Stotts. What's he good at? Is the reputation as an offensive innovator deserved? SEGMENT 2: What might Stotts look like as coach of the Lakers and LeBron? What about the shortcomings Blazers teams had on D? SEGMENT 3: Would Mike rather be the Lakers or the Blazers right now? Quin Snyder Seems Set in Utah. How Does That Impact the Lakers' Coaching Search?

Quin Snyder met with the media in Utah Monday, and while he didn't explicitly say "I'm not leaving the Jazz to go coach the Lakers," he made it pretty clear he's not intending to go anywhere. The Jazz have made it clear they're not firing him. So while he was surely a long shot anyway, it's pretty clear now that Quin Snyder won't be the next coach of the Lakers. Where does that leave them? With a bunch of lower profile candidates, most of whom will be very hard to separate in concrete terms. So that means they'll have to decide the qualities they seek, and the type of team they want to build and choose accordingly. That's a process question, and one the Lakers have struggled with of late. So far, though, the process has looked pretty good! A diverse list of names, no groups included or excluded for dumb cosmetic reasons. Will it continue. Meanwhile, Monday's show included a lot of talk about Mark Jackson and reasons he might not be the best choice for L.A.. It generated a lot of commentary on the Locked On Lakers YouTube page. How much does Jackson's open, strong Christian faith (he's an ordained minister who tied that faith into his coaching with Golden State) count as a strike against him? Is the media (including the hosts of this show) being unfair on that end? Finally, how important is it the Lakers find a coach who can handle Russell Westbrook? Reports have noted that the bad chemistry between Russ and Frank Vogel was an important factor in letting Vogel go. But he's going to be traded, right? Well... HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Quin Snyder looks like he's staying put. How does that impact the coaching search? SEGMENT 2: Responding to questions about questions about Mark Jackson. So the Lakers don't appear to be in a big hurry to replace Frank Vogel with a new head coach, but as names like Quin Snyder, Darvin Ham, Nick Nurse, and others swirl around, another familiar one has surfaced as an old friend has been enlisted to help them find the right guy. Phil Jackson. Yes! Phil Jackson! What exactly can Phil bring to the coaching search? He is, by all accounts, close to Nurse, who would undoubtedly be a huge get for the purple and gold (if, and it's a big if, they could convince Toronto to let him go). On the other hand, how connected is Phil to the slate of available candidates out there? And more importantly, what does it mean that the Lakers keep going back to the same people over and over and over, and seem unable to reach outside the proverbial family for any sort of guidance? Would it kill them, perhaps, to just beef up the basketball ops department rather than asking, say, Magic Johnson for more help? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: News! Phil Jackson is apparently part of the coaching search braintrust. Why are we back here again? SEGMENT 2: What could Phil bring? In a vacuum, it's fine he's part of the search. On Wednesday's episode with Dan Woike of the LA Times, we covered the Russell Westbrook Experience. What it was like to cover him, and more importantly, what it was like for the players and coaches who had to work with him. From there, we turned to the question of accountability and transparency, and whether the Lakers are displaying either quality (and why it matters that, spoiler alert, they're not). Finally, as focus turns to the coaching search, it's worth asking why, specifically, Frank Vogel was canned. In today's episode - Part II with Dan! - we get deeper into the coaching question. What are the Lakers looking for in their next head coach? Where will they look? As things go from rumor to more concrete information about what options the Lakers are exploring, will a through line emerge between the candidates? Will it be a more scattershot approach? Will they provide an element of freedom, or will the front office dictate assistant coaches and continue sending Kurt Rambis to sit in on coaching meetings? Do the Lakers still worry too much about appearances? Are they a kind of old money organization that thumbs its noses at things "regular" teams have to do to be good? Answering big questions about this summer means grappling too with just how good the Lakers think they can be. Do the Lakers know? Are they ready to make hard choices with a longer time horizon in mind? GUEST: Dan Woike, LA Times HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: What are the Lakers looking for in their next coach? Where does Dan think they'll turn when the time comes to start interviewing? SEGMENT 2: Are the Lakers too concerned about appearances to do what needs to be done if hard choices/conversations are put on their proverbial doorstep? SEGMENT 3: First and foremost, the Lakers need to figure out what they can be next year. Can they really rebuild into title contention this fast? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Why Westbrook Went Wrong. Plus, Are the Lakers Holding Themselves Accountable? Guest: Dan Woike

The Lakers have a tremendous amount of stuff to figure out this offseason - what to do with Russell Westbrook, what coach to replace Frank Vogel with, are LeBron James and Anthony Davis still a championship foundation, etc. - and a lot of it depends on developing a sense of self-awareness around where stuff went wrong. Until that happens, Jeanie Buss Rob Pelinka, Kurt/Linda Rambis and everyone else making decisions will likely flail about. Maybe they get it right. But then again, maybe they don't. Joining the show to discuss it all is Dan Woike, Lakers beat writer at the LA Times. We start with more insight into The Russ Experience. Woike seemed to get along, relatively speaking, with Westbrook through the season. Is that actually the case? What was it like to cover him, and why did everything go wrong? Clearly, he says, this was bad casting. Wrong dude for the wrong role he'd be expected to play. From there, it's a look at Rob Pelinka, the front office, and the idea of accountability. A day after OKC GM Sam Presti spoke for over two hours to local media in his exit interview, it was a reminder that Pelinka barely cracked 20 minutes, this on the day the Lakers fired Frank Vogel and hours after this dumpster fire of a season ended. Fair to say he left the dais with some hands still raised in the audience. Was he being accountable? Do they really know what they're accountable for? All of this, of course, is relevant to the coaching search. How the Lakers approach this stuff matters. The image they project to the outside world matters. Particularly if they want to chase one of the big names on the coaching market, should one come available (like Quin Snyder, Doc Rivers or Nick Nurse, for example). How much damage have they done to themselves? PART 1 of 2 with Dan! HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Westbrook Experience. How psychology and fit conspired to ruin something before it started in LA. The guy, it turns out, was way more complex than the Lakers knew what to do with. SEGMENT 2: How accountable is Pelinka holding himself? Does the org have a real idea what that means? SEGMENT 3: The roots of the coaching search. What led to Vogel's dismissal? What are the Lakers looking for from here? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! PrizePicks Check out PrizePicks.com and use promo code: “NBA” or go to your app store and download the app today. During Vice President of Basketball Operations/General Manager Rob Pelinka's exit interview earlier this week, he presented himself as taking full-throated responsibility for all facets of arguably the worst season in Lakers franchise history. Except, of course, when he refused to offer details as to why exactly Frank Vogel was pretty much the only person taking the fall for this season, despite having the least say in the choices that went south. Or when he presented decisions as stopping with him, but also including Jeanie Buss, Kurt Rambis, Joey Buss, Jesse Buss, etc. Which isn't to say that Pelinka didn't put himself out there as the face of these and future decisions. But as guest Bill Oram of The Athletic wrote in his piece about the somewhat cagey and haughty interview, the man at the top of the executive food chain has officially run out of people to use as a meat shield. The conversation with Oram discusses Pelinka's job security, Jeanie Buss' patience, the Lakers front office dynamics, what to do about Russell Westbrook and LeBron James' futures with the franchise, and much more. Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky Segment One: A recap about everything that went wrong this season, and why. Segment Two: Decisions Pelinka has made, bad or bad, and why chaos always seems to surround this front office. LeBron Reportedly Likes Mark Jackson as a New Coach. Would the Lakers Hire him?

As we all settle into the Lakers' offseason, big questions - and there are many - rumors and reports are already circulating about the direction the team might go in replacing Frank Vogel. One nugget reported by Sam Amick at The Athletic? LeBron James would be interested in the Lakers hiring former Warriors/current ESPN broadcaster Mark Jackson. Now, this is highly unikely (Jackson was a rumored candidate after the Lakers canned Luke Walton, and even when the Cavs fired David Blatt), but the concept raises interesting questions about how the Lakers need to approach the coaching search. Because while Jackson is hardly the perfect candidate, that guy doesn't exist. It's very unlikely the Lakers will have access to the creme de la creme of uber-elite coaching options. So they need to be very clear on what they want, why, and who can deliver on their top priorities. From there, they have to match that coach with a roster that accentuates those strengths. That certainly didn't happen this season. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Stanley Johnson's exit interview revealed a lot about how the Lakers mismatched players and roles. Getting the right mindset to play the right role isn't always easy for decorated pros. SEGMENT 2: Johnson also noted how skillsets on the Lakers didn't quite mesh, either. Understanding why, and getting a more coherent construction for next year's roster, is critical. SEGMENT 3: The Lakers seem (very, very) unlikely to hire Jackson, but just the idea raises all kinds of interesting questions about what the Lakers would look for in their next coach. As was reported by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Frank Vogel was officially fired by the Lakers on Monday, one of the many topics discussed by every member of the team (save Anthony Davis and Carmelo Anthony, who spoke on Sunday) and GM Rob Pelinka during the day's exit interviews. They talked about Vogel's dismissal, injuries, bad on-court chemistry, and Russell Westbrook. So much Russell Westbrook talk. That includes from Westbrook himself, who spoke at length and aggressively defended himself, even while acknowledging his play wasn't up to his standards. So why did things go so wrong with Russ? Was it doomed from the start? What did his interview reveal about Westbrook? The answers aren't just a matter of gossip or grist for the mill. Understanding how exactly the handling of Vogel's firing went wrong (and why Pelinka did a poor job fielding questions about it), why the roster construction didn't work, and what unmade Westbrook's relationship with his coach (among other things) is central to repairing the team heading into next season. Man alive, there's a lot of work coming for Pelinka and crew. So much intrigue, it was enough to make LeBron James delivering important health updates a mere footnote! HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: LeBron James explained his health situation, noting he doesn't expect to have surgery on any of his ailments. Rob Pelinka fielded questions about Frank Vogel's dismissal, and didn't exactly shine. SEGMENT 2: Why Pelinka's bad answers about Vogel are important. It was, ironically, one of the most fun games the Lakers have played all season (not that there are all that many to choose from). Austin Reaves became only the fifth Lakers rookie to notch a triple double, Malik Monk popped off for 41 and Mac McClung capped things off with a double clutch reverse dunk as the Lakers beat the Denver Nuggets (a skeleton crew, but still...) Sunday. And literally as the final horn sounded, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported that Frank Vogel will be fired, as early as Monday (and really, can you wait after the Tweet comes out?). Vogel saw the Tweet before hitting the podium, and made it clear nobody from the organization has said anything to him. And it was also clear he didn't think he was being treated respectfully. All of this matters not because Vogel's firing will be a surprise - it's obviously not - but because it impacts the perception of the franchise and the search for the next coach. The Lakers haven't exactly nailed it in how they've handled coaching recent coaching searches, and were thought to be putting Vogel in an untenable position last offseason by only offering him a year's extension. It's a tough way to start an offseason for a team that is once again suffering a crisis of reputation. Maybe not as bad as it was a few years ago... but it can also be argued the team a few seasons back was in a better place in terms of personnel, flexibility and future assets. Finally, postmortems written about the Lakers from ESPN and The LA Times get to the "Westbrook Problem," and illustrate how everyone got it wrong in a move that was likely doomed from the jump.
