Welcome to the premiere episode of Doc Talk, a new podcast hosted by Oscar-winning writer-director John Ridley and Deadline's documentary editor, Matt Carey. We're kicking off with a deep dive into documentary's power to right a grave wrong in the criminal justice system by helping free a wrongfully convicted prisoner. Only a handful of nonfiction filmmakers has achieved this extraordinary feat, and we are speaking with four of them: Errol Morris (The Thin Blue Line), Joe Berlinger (the Paradise Lost trilogy), Amy Berg (The Case Against Adnan Syed and West of Memphis), and Deborah Esquenazi (Southwest of Salem: The Story of the San Antonio Four). When Liz Ramirez' nieces came to visit her for a week in 1994, they had a nice time. They went to the pool. They played basketball. They ate hot dogs. Liz's roommate, Kristie Mayhugh met the girls. So did Liz and Kristie's friends, Cassandra Rivera and Anna Vasquez. At the end of the week, the girls hugged their aunt goodbye and went back to their dad's house. Later, the girls came forward with a shocking allegation. They said that their aunt and her three friends had gang raped them. There'd been drugs. Weapons. Satanic overtones. The most disturbing part? It was all made up. Then Brandi tells us about Michele Neurauter, whose death inside her upstate New York home was designed to look like a suicide. But something about it seemed off. Michele had an odd rope mark on her chin. Then there was the timing. Michele had recently won a long-fought, bitter custody battle for her youngest daughter. Why would she do this now? And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: “The Mystery of the San Antonio four,” by Maurice Chammah for the Texas Observer The documentary, “Southwest of Salem” “San Antonio Four to host fundraiser for Innocence Project of Texas,” for Henry Ramos for KENS5 “What it's like to be falsely branded a satanic child molester,” by Chase Madar for Vice “How junk science and anti-lesbian prejudice got four women sent to prison for more than a decade,” by Linda Rodriguez Mcrobbie for Slate “Inside case behind wrongful conviction doc ‘Southwest of Salem'” by Bridgette Dunlap for Rolling Stone “Sex assault case,” Associated Press “Remaining women in abuse case freed,” by Will Weissert for the Associated Press “San Antonio Four exonerated in child rape case,” by Emanuella Grinberg for CNN “Judge clears records of wrongfully convicted San Antonio 4,” by Tim Fitzsimons for NBC News In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “Karrie's Choice” episode 48 Hours “Family Values” episode Mastermind of Murder “Man Coerces Daughter To Help Him Kill His Ex-Wife And Stage Crime As A Suicide” by Joe Dziemianowicz “Man pleads guilty to killing ex-wife, conspiring with daughter in Corning murder” by Jeff Murray, Star Gazette “Life without parole: Lloyd Neurauter killed ex-wife with help from their daughter” by Jeff Murray, Star Gazette “Karrie Neurauter, manipulated into helping kill mother, released from prison” by Jeff Smith, Star Gazette YOU'RE STILL READING? In the late ‘90s, Anna Vasquez, Cassandra Rivera, Elizabeth Ramirez, and Kristie Mayhugh all received phone calls accusing their lesbian friend group of a crime that never actually happened. What followed was a modern-day witch trial, landing the San Antonio Four –as they'd come to be called– in prison for over a decade. When Anna unexpectedly got out on parole ahead of the others, she had no choice but to lead the fight for their innocence. Now, she's dedicated her life to preventing similar stories from happening. In San Antonio, Texas, Anna Vasquez and her three friends were accused of a brutal crime. Because they had all come out as lesbians, they were wrongfully convicted for the assault of two young girls. The women are now known as the San Antonio Four, and Anna fought for her innocence for 22 years. Anna Vasquez is the Director of Outreach and Education for the Innocence Project of Texas. Ms. Vasquez took on that role after serving a nearly 13-year prison sentence for a crime that never occurred. Ms. Vasquez and three of her friends, who became known as the San Antonio Four, were convicted of aggravated sexual assault of a child in a case that dates back to 1994 when Ms. Vasquez was 19. Ms. Vasquez and her friends spent 24 years fighting for their innocence. In 2016, the court of criminal appeals deemed all four innocent. Ms. Vasquez is now dedicated to sharing her experience in the hopes of improving the justice system and preventing similar occurrences. Ms. Vasquez currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Houston Forensic Science Center, the Innocence Network Executive Board, and the San Antonio Crime Coalition. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
In 1998, four women were convicted of the sexual assault of two young children. Elizabeth Ramirez, Cassandra Rivera, Kristie Mayhugh, and Anna Vasquez were all lesbians and this played a role in their trial and public perception. Outdated medical evidence and satanic panic led to their conviction. They would serve over almost 2 decades in prison before being exonerated. Southwest of Salem: The Story of the San Antonio Four excavates the nightmarish persecution of Elizabeth Ramirez, Cassandra Rivera, Kristie Mayhugh, and Anna Vasquez - four Latina lesbians wrongfully convicted of gang-raping two little girls in San Antonio, Texas. The film begins its journey inside a Texas prison, after these women have spent nearly a decade behind bars. They were 19 and 20 years old at the time the allegations surfaced. Using the women's home video footage from 21 years ago combined with recent verité footage and interviews, the film explores their personal narratives and their search for exculpatory evidence to help their losing criminal trials. **LOOKING FOR MORE TCO?** WHO COULD BLAME YOU! S2E11: Live at SXSW with the San Antonio Four In 1995, 20-year-old Elizabeth Ramirez and three of her friends —Cassandra Rivera, Kristie Mayhugh, and Anna Vasquez — were indicted on charges of sexually molesting Ms. Ramirez’s 7-year-old and 9-year-old nieces in San Antonio, TX. Before charges were filed, police learned that all four women were gay and had recently come out to their families. The allegations came in the wake of more than a decade of national hysteria over claims of satanic ritual abuse of children. All four women cooperated with authorities but vehemently denied they molested the girls. In both trials, prosecutors won convictions by discounting the many inconsistencies in the little girls’ testimonies and argued that the inconsistencies were outweighed by the testimony of a pediatrician. Prosecutors portrayed Elizabeth Ramirez as the ringleader and tried her first. She was convicted in 1997 of aggravated sexual assault of a child and indecency with a child and sentenced to 37½ years in prison. The remaining women were tried together in 1998 and were each convicted of two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child and two counts of indecency with a child. All three were sentenced to 15 years in prison on the aggravated sexual assault charges and 10 years for the indecency charges. The convictions began to unravel many years later when one of Elizabeth’s two nieces, now in her twenties, stepped forward to say she had lied. Members of her family coached her, she told authorities, to make up a story because of their anger about Elizabeth's sexuality. Soon after, the pediatrician used by the prosecution recanted her testimony based on new scientific evidence that showed her original findings regarding the girls' injuries were medically inaccurate. With the new evidence, the Innocence Project of Texas filed for post-conviction relief to have the verdicts overturned. A Bexar County District Court allowed Kristie Mayhugh, Cassandra Rivera, and Elizabeth Ramirez to be released from prison in 2013 while the court considered their request to have their verdicts overturned. Anna Vasquez had just been released on parole. They were finally exonerated in 2016 after serving a combined total of 62 years in prison. www.wrongfulconvictionpodcast.com Wrongful Conviction with Jason Flom is a production of Lava For Good Podcasts in association with Signal Co. The case of the San Antonio Four explored in Southwest of Salem: The Story of the San Antonio Four is one of many crimes in which the sexuality of the accused (four queer Latina women), is used as damning evidence of their guilt. This panel will draw on true crime documentaries including Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hoods, The Staircase and The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst to examine cases in which the (assumed) sexuality and personal proclivities of the accused created a fervor of queer panic in the eyes of the press and in turn the public.
The award winning acclaimed SOUTHWEST OF SALEM: THE STORY OF THE SAN ANTONIO FOUR chronicles the nightmarish persecution of Elizabeth Ramirez, Cassandra Rivera, Kristie Mayhugh, and Anna Vasquez - four Latina lesbians wrongfully convicted of gang-raping two little girls in San Antonio, Texas over 20 years ago during the “Satanic Panic” of the 1980s-1990s. Despite flawed medical evidence and convictions based solely on the testimony of two young children, the women always maintained their innocence—and have waged an ongoing fight for exoneration. Documentary filmmaker Deborah S. Esquenazi weaves together emotional interviews with the women (labeled the San Antonio Four) and their families with actual news footage and home videos, equally showcasing the injustice of the situation and the families that were torn apart as a result. Unique to the San Antonio Four case, none of the four women ever took a plea bargain or even considered it, despite serving their time in separate prisons. While the state offered deferred adjudication, requiring no time in prison but probation for ten years, the women turned down the offer, maintaining their innocence and faith in truth and justice. Esquenazi follows the work of attorneys from the Innocence Project of Texas, who played a pivotal role in securing an on-camera recantation by one of the victims, now 25 years old—and their ultimate release from prison in 2013. Director Deborah S. Esquenazi and film subject Anna Vasquez stop by to talk about the journey, heartbreak and triumph of a 22-year nightmare. For news and updates go to: southwestofsalem.com
