About James Machin James is a writer, researcher, and editor, whose recent books include the Edinburgh Edition of the Works of Arthur Conan Doyle's version of The Stark Munro Letters (2024) and The Strange Stories of John Buchan for British Library Publishing (2025). He edited Faunus, the journal of The Friends of Arthur Machen, for over ten years, and has taught at Birkbeck (University of London), the Royal College of Art, and the University of Bedfordshire. He has recently commenced work on the Edinburgh Edition of Round the Fire Stories. With its first-hand testimony of the life of a doctor at the outset of his career in the late nineteenth century, The Stark Munro Letters will appeal to anyone with an interest in medical history. It is based on his experiences during the eight years he spent as a General Practitioner, before becoming a professional author in 1890. By some way the most autobiographical of Conan Doyle's novels—written at the height of Holmes's popularity—it is also the most personal in terms of presenting his worldview during his formative years, including ruminations on moral philosophy, religion, science, and evolutionary theory. Moreover, it is entertaining and incredibly vivid—a contemporary critic described the mercurial Cullingworth as ‘one of the finest characters Dr. Doyle has yet drawn'. The case is of interest due to CCTV footage going viral amid accusations of violent racist behaviour by the police  and accusations of two tier policing. La rana (The Frog) es un relato de terror del escritor norteamericano Henry Kuttner (1915-1958), publicado originalmente en la edición de febrero de 1939 en la revista Strange Stories. La rana, posiblemente uno de los cuentos de Henry Kuttner menos conocidos, relata la historia de Norman Hartley, un artista de Nueva York que decide pasar una temporada en el campo para recuperar su productividad. Alquila una casa rural muy cerca de Monk's Hollow, o la Hoya del Monje, y en su jardín descubre una gran roca con extraños grabados. Los lugareños la llaman La Piedra de la Bruja, y aseguran que en realidad es la lápida de Persis Winthorp, una bruja que fue oportunamente asesinada por los antiguos pobladores del lugar. SPOILERS. A pesar de las advertencias de los lugareños, Norman Hartley es un tipo escéptico. No cree en absurdas supersticiones. Por otro lado, la Piedra de la Bruja ofende su sensibilidad artística, ya que arruina la delicada simetría del jardín, de modo tal que contrata a un par de sujetos para que quiten la lápida. Naturalmente, esto fue una muy mala idea. Persis Winthorp regresa, no ya como una odiosa bruja, sino más bien como una criatura híbrida, mitad mujer, mitad batracio (ver: El cuerpo de la mujer en el Horror). Bajo esta forma monstruosa aterroriza a Norman Hartley y a la gente de la Hoya del Monje, irrumpiendo en sus casas en medio de la noche y haciéndolas pedazos. Los aldeanos se apresuran a organizar una partida para defender a sus familias y cazar al monstruo. Sin embargo, todo parce indicar que la bruja está interesada únicamente en Norman Hartley, a quien eventualmente persigue hasta sus dominios en el pantano. La rana de no es un relato brillante, pero sí competente, la clase de pieza que uno espera de un autor con el oficio de Henry Kuttner.
