Elk Hunt
Building Maps for Hunters: Jeremy Gilbertson on Bridger Watch & Elk Hunting

Elk Hunt

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 19, 2025 75:58

Alright, so Jeremy Gilbertson is one of those guys who just went all-in on elk hunting—and it worked. This dude studied elk hunting harder than he studied school, killed a bull on his first-ever trip 36 hours from his front door in Minnesota, and then spent the next few years guiding hunters and building maps for a living. Now he's joining the Bridger Watch team to help us build the absolute best maps for wearables, because turns out everyone who said "nobody wants maps on a watch" was dead wrong. We dive deep into Jeremy's journey from cold-calling Colorado OTC units to guiding on private ranches in New Mexico, and we get into the real tactics that separate the guys who find elk from the guys who wander around hoping. We talk about e-scouting secrets, micro terrain, efficiency versus effectiveness, why busy is lazy (shoutout to Cal Arnold), and how to hunt like a 301 even if you're happy shooting raghorns. Jeremy's got a unique perspective because he's both a hardcore public land DIY guy and a guide who's seen hundreds of hunters make the same mistakes. If you want to learn how to find elk in tough units, how to balance aggression with patience, and why you need way more than seven days to figure out a unit, this one's for you. Let's get into it. $10,000 ELK HUNT GIVEAWAY We're partnering with Huntin' Fool Adventures for an insane giveaway. When you preorder a Bridger Reckon Watch and use code HF at checkout, you're automatically entered to win a $10,000 elk hunt voucher. You can use this for New Mexico landowner tags, a fully guided hunt, or whatever elk hunting adventure you want. Here's the best part: we're talking single-digit entries right now, so your odds of winning are actually really, really good. This isn't one of those giveaways where you're up against 50,000 people—this is a legitimate shot at a dream elk hunt. Head over to bridgerwatch.com, preorder your Reckon, use code HF, and you're in. If you were already thinking about getting the Founder Series, this is a no-brainer. OnX Hunt - The ultimate tool for elk hunters and the app I absolutely won't go into the field without. Whether you're e-scouting from the couch or actually hunting elk, OnX gives you detailed maps, property boundaries, and over 50 layers of mapping data including satellite imagery, offline maps, and waypoints. It helps you make smarter decisions no matter where you hunt. Save time, avoid mistakes, and stay connected to your crew. If you're not an Elite member yet, you're missing out on a whole other level of tools. Head over to onxmaps.com and use code TRO to save 20% off your membership. Tricer - These guys make gear that's fast, light, and simple. From bomber tripods to spotting scope mounts, panheads, truck mounts, and now even bipods—Tricer makes gear that just works. I've been running their bipod hard this season and it's been rock solid. If you're looking to upgrade your glassing system, check out Tricer. Head over to tricer.com, use code TRO at checkout, and save yourself 10%. Stone Glacier - I've packed out a lot of animals with my Stone Glacier pack. This year, the Sky Archer 6400 has been with me to Alaska, British Columbia, Wyoming, and Montana. Whether it's a 10-day backpack hunt or day hunting from the side-by-side, Stone Glacier is minimalist, lightweight, and versatile. They make an entire suite of hardcore mountain hunting gear. Head over to stoneglacier.com, use code TRO, and get yourself some great gear. TIMESTAMPS 0:00 - Intro & Bridger Watch Announcement 2:30 - Jeremy's New Role at Bridger Watch 5:45 - Building the Best Maps for Wearables 8:20 - Jeremy's Elk Hunting Origin Story 11:15 - From Minnesota Deer Hunter to Colorado Elk Obsessed 14:30 - First Hunt: 36 Hours to a Bull on the Ground 18:45 - How Much Was Luck vs. Skill? 21:30 - Advice to Your Younger Self 24:15 - Learning When to Run and When to Crawl 28:40 - Hunting 101 vs 201 vs 301 33:20 - Understanding Herd Dynamics at the Macro Level 37:50 - What Guiding Teaches You About Elk 41:15 - Elk Bros Outfitting Model Explained 45:30 - Hunting the Nucleus vs. Chasing Satellites 49:00 - Teaching Hunters vs. Learning Yourself 52:45 - E-Scouting Secrets: Avoid the OnX Holes 57:20 - Looking for Micro Terrain, Not Big Features 1:01:30 - Turn Off Public Land Layers When E-Scouting 1:04:45 - Rifle Hunting: Finding Where One Elk Can Survive 1:09:15 - Efficiency vs. Effectiveness in Hunt Planning 1:13:30 - Decision Fatigue and Mental Management 1:17:45 - Whoop for Hunters: Managing Expedition-Level Stress 1:21:00 - Why You Need More Than Seven Days 1:25:30 - Time on Feet Beats Everything Else 1:28:15 - Patience is the Hardest Skill to Master 1:31:45 - Elk Bros Details & Who It's For 1:34:00 - Outro & Hunt Planner Download THREE KEY TAKEAWAYS Stop Looking for Perfect Spots—Find Where Elk Can Survive - Everyone e-scouts the same big features: burns, mega meadows, obvious north-facing slopes. Jeremy's secret? Look for the smallest pockets where elk could survive, not where they want to be. That 50-acre hidden basin above the highway? That's where the pressure-educated bulls are living. When you're looking at a unit, turn off the public land layers and ask yourself: if I could hunt anywhere, where would the elk actually be? Then figure out how to access those spots legally. The micro terrain beats the macro highlights every single time. You Need Way More Than Seven Days to Figure Out a Unit - Outfitters operate on seven-day hunts because they've already spent years figuring out where the elk are and what they're doing. When you show up as a DIY hunter with seven days, you're spending the first five just learning what the guide already knows. Jeremy's rule: plan for 10-15 days minimum if you're hunting a new unit. The hard units? Budget 12+ days just to figure it out, then another 3-4 to actually execute. If you only have seven days, you're gambling that you'll figure it out faster than average—and most guys are packing out on the drive home with all the knowledge they needed on day one. Hunt Like a 301 Even If You're Happy Shooting Raghorns - The difference between a 201 hunter and a 301 hunter isn't the size of the bull—it's understanding the entire system. A 201 hunter finds a herd and focuses on that six-point. A 301 hunter understands where all the herds are, how they interact, where the satellites are coming and going, and how pressure moves elk across the entire unit. Here's the secret: if you hunt the nucleus where the big bulls are, you'll magnetize all the smaller bulls trying to be there too. Understanding macro herd dynamics doesn't just help you find giants—it puts you in position to encounter way more elk, period.

With a career spanning roles at Aramark, Walgreens, PE-backed organizations, nonprofits, and large public companies, Jeff frames AI not as a threat to HR, but as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to refocus the profession on what humans do best.Key Themes Explored:AI in Human Resources: Why generative and agentic AI are best used to eliminate repetitive, transactional tasks so HR leaders can focus on strategy, leadership development, and culture. From Deskilling to Reskilling: Jeff challenges the fear-based narrative around AI, arguing instead that HR is entering a reskilling era that demands curiosity, adaptability, and courage. The New Role of the CHRO: Today's HR leaders must be part strategist, part technologist, and fully human. Jeff explains why fluency in AI, data, and change management is now essential for executive relevance.Preserving Humanity at Scale: As automation increases, empathy, compassion, and authentic leadership become more valuable, not less. AI should amplify the human experience, not replace it.Workforce Planning & Learning Innovation: How AI-driven insights can enable real-time learning, personalized development paths, and smarter workforce decisions.Throughout the episode, Jeff and Luke emphasize a core truth: the future of HR is not about replacing people with machines, but about freeing leaders to lead more deeply, thoughtfully, and humanely.Whether you are an HR executive, business leader, or someone navigating organizational change, this episode offers clarity, reassurance, and practical insight into what's coming next—and how to lead confidently through it.From Our Sponsor(s)...Optimize Pharmacy Benefits with RxBenefitsElevate your employee benefits while managing costs. MBS says he wants a two state solution with Israel and Palestine but he won't take in one Palestinian from Gaza. Later, NY Post's Miranda Devine criticizes the FBI and Secret Service for mishandling the investigation into Thomas Crooks' attempted assassination of Donald Trump at a 2024 Butler, Pennsylvania rally. An independent source uncovered Crooks' 17 online accounts revealing his ideological shift from pro-Trump supporter in 2019—issuing threats against Democrats—to anti-Trump critic by 2020, with increasingly violent rhetoric advocating terrorism, assassination, and interactions with a neo-Nazi. The Crooks files need to be released.  Also, Gov Mike Dunleavy calls in to discuss a new discovery at Alaska's Graphite Creek site near Nome which has uncovered vast reserves of graphite and rare earth elements potentially dealing a major blow to China's 90% dominance in these minerals. This find allows the U.S. to wean off China's rare earth minerals. Afterward, all of the so-called Epstein files will be released. Rep Clay Higgins was the only Congressman to vote against it, but he has a good point. Discover how Moe's redefining the balance between technology, trust, and empathy in data leadership.Key Moments:Data as “Part of the Meal” (09:09): Using a cooking analogy, Moe describes how data should be integrated into decision-making, not as a garnish or afterthought, but as part of the meal itself. She highlights Canva's culture of balancing intuition with data, ensuring both creative instinct and analytics inform every decision.Storytelling as a Data Superpower (10:57): Moe breaks down her “insight headline” method, turning flat dashboards into stories that drive action. She argues that data storytelling isn't about aesthetics but understanding, and that trust comes from how clearly insights connect to business impact.Technical Fluency in the Age of AI (18:16): While some leaders claim programming is obsolete, Moe insists it's more important than ever. Understanding what's under the hood helps data professionals vet AI outputs, maintain data quality, and confidently guide stakeholders through rapid technological change.Buy vs. Build: The Cost–Benefit Equation (20:11): Moe breaks down how Canva evaluates when to build internal tools versus buy off-the-shelf solutions. She stresses that the best answer depends on scalability, cost, and time to market — and that implementation costs are often underestimated.AI's New Role in Marketing (24:48): Moe shares how AI is reshaping marketing teams and their relationship with data. She highlights how generative AI tools can democratize access to insights, but warns that without trusted, high-quality data foundations, AI can just as easily amplify mistakes.Key Quotes:"Data is about creativity…It's not about it being pretty, it's about being understood.” - Moe Kiss“ We are leveraging AI tools more, and so understanding what's under the hood, I would say, is more essential than ever.” - Moe Kiss“[Know] the business appetite. Welcome back to Intellicast! On today's episode, Brian is joined by Gabby Blados to cover one of the busiest news weeks the insights industry has had in a while, featuring a billion-dollar merger, a major leadership shake-up, and plenty of questions about what's next. The episode kicks off with the biggest headline of the week: Qualtrics' announcement that it plans to acquire Press Ganey Forsta for over $6 billion. Brian and Gabby dive into what this means for the market research world, especially as two of the most widely used survey programming platforms — Qualtrics and Decipher — will soon fall under one roof. Brian wonders if this level of consolidation could raise antitrust or competition concerns within the industry, while Gabby reflects on what this might mean for current Decipher users, including EMI. They also explore whether this deal might spark a new wave of innovation from smaller, niche platforms looking to position themselves as alternatives to the latest “industry Goliath.” Next, Brian and Gabby turn their attention to the surprising news that dropped the same morning — Melanie Courtright, CEO of the Insights Association, is stepping down after five years to join Sego as Chief Strategy Officer. Both agree that this was a major surprise for many across the industry. The pair discusses Melanie's strong legacy with the Insights Association, including how she unified chapters, modernized the association's structure, and strengthened its position as the leading voice for research professionals. Gabby and Brian share their excitement for her new role at Sego, while also speculating about what comes next for IA's leadership and the direction the organization will take. In between these two major headlines, Brian and Gabby also touch on a few other key stories — including the Census Bureau's recent layoffs and their potential implications for data accuracy, and new developments in the ongoing conversation around data quality and AI-driven fraud detection. And because no episode would be complete without a little fun, they close out the episode by ranking their top Halloween candies. Thanks for tuning in! Welcome to an inspiring conversation on the future of learning with Michael Ioffe, founder of Arist, a company doing really interesting work in education. Michael is a Forbes 30 under 30 and a Thiel fellow. Michael joins host Mike Palmer to share his journey, beginning with his early obsession with education, influenced by his parents who were refugees. His experiences, including scaling free live conversations with entrepreneurs to 500 cities in 50 countries by age 18, led to a critical insight in a war zone in Yemen: the best way to deliver learning where educational resources and internet access are limited is via text message. This led to building Arist, which focuses on meeting people where they are and making learning conversational and digestible. We explore how constraints drive innovation and how Arist was ahead of the curve, foreseeing that most workplace communication would shift to messaging tools and leveraging the power of early AI models like GPT-3. We discuss how being text-based puts Arist at the native environment of LLMs and how conciseness forces clarity in learning design. Michael explains that Arist courses are not "micro learning" in a way that suggests they are less significant, but are intentionally designed to chunk information into bite-sized, conversational, and practice-oriented pieces. We also cover the importance of making instruction feel human, using custom data and custom workflows to ensure content is reliable, and how Arist enables rapid upskilling in the flow of work for enterprises. For example, a client with 30,000 employees was able to push out content on AI and data literacy immediately using Arist, compared to the six months it would have taken with existing tools. The conversation culminates in a discussion about the shift from focusing on skills to focusing on outcomes, and why agency is the single most important human skill in the age of AI. Michael shares that the role of the teacher is evolving from knowledge-provider to curator, facilitator, and mentor, helping students define their ambitious outcomes. The limit in the age of exponentially better AI models is no longer the model, but our own ability to ask better, smarter, and more interesting questions. Key Takeaways Learning in the Flow of Work: Learning should meet people where they are, making it digestible and conversational, often via messaging tools. The Power of Constraints: Challenges, such as a lack of internet access in a war zone, can drive innovations like text message courses, which then prove widely relevant. AI and Frictionless Learning: Leveraging AI to create content delivered through messaging makes learning completely frictionless for both the creator and the end-user. Focus on Outcomes Over Skills: The future of education needs to shift its focus from building and measuring skills to achieving specific, desired outcomes, with AI accelerating the path to those outcomes. Agency is the Core Skill: The number one skill that matters with AI is human agency—the ability to figure out the outcome you care about and what you need to do to accomplish it. New Role for Educators: Teachers and leaders shift to curators, facilitators, and mentors who help students define ambitious goals and push them to achieve more than they thought possible. If you're interested in how disruptive technology like AI is reshaping corporate learning, instructional design, and career readiness, this episode offers a forward-thinking perspective. We break down the evolution of learning delivery and why focusing on human agency is key to thriving in the future of work. We're hearing from the family at the center of a confrontation at a Phillies game last week over a home run ball. Drew Feltwell came up with the ball after a scrum in the crowd and gave it to his son Lincoln. But a woman confronted Drew grabbing his arm and demanding the ball. Feltwell told CBS News Correspondent Cristian Benavides giving up the ball was worth much more than the souvenir. For our latest edition of "Never too Late" CBS News Bay Area Anchor Anne Makovec caught the acting bug at a young age, but life took her in a different direction. Recently, she got a chance to pull off something bold and become part of a "Beautiful" CBS soap opera. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor has made it her mission to help all children shine. The justice is a best-selling children's book author. Her latest is "Just Shine!: How to be a Better you." It tells the story of her mother, Celina, who helped everyone around her shine their brightest. She tells us all about it. The one and only Oprah is here to reveal her newest book club selection, only on CBS Mornings! For a very special talk of the table. One of the biggest names in stand-up comedy, Nate Bargatze is about to take another big step. The 46-year-old has been on an absolute tear. He sold more than 1.2 million tickets to his "The be Funny Tour" last year. It made him the highest-grossing comedian in the country. This Sunday may be his biggest gig yet. He's hosting the 77th Emmy Awards here on CBS and streaming on Paramount+. Actor Rain Wilson is now taking on a very different role from Dwight Schrute in "The Office." In a new action comedy called "Code 3." Wilson stars as Randy an underpaid, burned-out paramedic on his last 24-hour shift. What starts as a routine day spirals into a night full of chaos and emergencies. It's darkly comedic and deeply human and he tells us all about it.
