In this episode of Machine Shop Mastery, I sit down with Kyra Tillman, third-generation owner of BTM Industries. When Kyra returned to the family shop, she inherited more than just machines—she inherited decades of “this is how we've always done it.”  What she's done since is nothing short of a transformation. With grit, grace, and a serious knack for finding and using resources, Kyra has turned a quiet, closed-door machine shop into a vibrant, collaborative, culture-driven powerhouse—one where growth and fun coexist, Nerf guns included. We dig deep into how she transitioned the shop from old-school processes and undocumented tribal knowledge into a modern, ISO-certified job shop with an eye toward continued growth. Kyra shares candidly about the challenges of taking over from her father, navigating culture change, building an apprenticeship program, and leveraging MEP grants and peer groups to grow her business and team. This conversation is a roadmap for any shop owner who's been putting off change, underestimating the power of collaboration, or unsure where to start when it comes to scaling smarter—not just bigger.  Kyra's journey proves that transformation doesn't require perfection—it requires community, commitment, and a willingness to be both humble and hungry. Whether you're a next-gen leader or seasoned veteran, this episode is full of the kind of real talk and actionable advice that'll get you thinking differently.  You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... "Business as usual with Turkey cannot continue." That was the message MEPs sent when they voted on a report about Turkey's EU accession process on May 7 in Strasbourg. Amid a crackdown on President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's political rivals as well as on protesters, MEPs said that EU membership talks with Turkey cannot be restarted in the current circumstances. At the same time, the European Union does not want to shut the door on Turkey completely, as Ankara remains a significant partner within NATO and its interests overlap with the EU's in Ukraine.

After a deadly train station collapse and ongoing government inaction, students have taken their message across Europe on foot. Maria came on the Breakfast Show to tell us more about this. The students running from Serbia to Brussels, Belgium are nearing the end of an 18-day, 1,500-kilometer ultramarathon in a dramatic protest against systemic corruption and democratic decline in their country. Over the weekend, they were greeted by a crowd of 200–300 supporters in Luxembourg, including members of the Serbian diaspora and local officials. The student movement began last November after the roof of a newly renovated train station in Novi Sad collapsed, killing 16 people. The tragedy, widely seen as the result of corruption and mismanagement, followed two school shootings in 2023 that had already shaken public confidence in Serbia's institutions. “This was the tipping point,” said Maria, a protest supporter here in Luxembourg. “Young people are saying, ‘We don't want to live in a country like this.'” What makes the movement unique is its structure: there are no official leaders. Students make decisions through horizontal organisation and direct democracy. This is a new model for activism in Serbia. The protest has expanded rapidly to include university professors, high school students, and professionals across sectors. The ultramarathon to Brussels aims to raise international awareness and prompt pressure from the European Union. The students recently attended a session in Strasbourg, where MEPs affirmed core democratic values and voiced support for their cause. Their demands include an independent judiciary, freedom of the press, transparent elections and checks on executive power With a final stop in Brussels this week, students are calling for the EU to turn its words into action.

The safe management of non-cardiac implantable electrical devices during surgery requires careful planning and knowledge of device-specific considerations. We continue our discussion from last week with actionable recommendations for each stage of perioperative care.• Electrocautery poses significant risks including device reprogramming, thermal burns, and damage to neural tissue• Turn off devices or set to safe surgery mode before using electrocautery • Bipolar cautery is safer than monopolar; if monopolar is needed, use lowest power setting• Place grounding pads to minimize current through the device generator• Somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) are relatively safe while motor evoked potentials (MEPs) should be avoided• Newer devices may be MRI conditional but require specific protocols including device interrogation• Regional anesthesia should use ultrasound guidance rather than nerve stimulation techniques• Neuraxial anesthesia is not contraindicated for spinal cord stimulator patients but must be placed below insertion level• ECT can be performed with device turned off and careful electrode placement• Devices should be turned back on before emergence from anesthesia• Postoperative evaluation should include checking for thermal injuries and neurologic changesThanks for joining us for our 253rd episode! Today's bonus episode is all about MEPs, and actually a very urgent issue related to MEPs. For context, the Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) is a public-private partnership that delivers comprehensive, proven solutions by helping small and medium-sized manufacturers grow, make operational improvements, and reduce risk.To put it in more simplified terms - MEPs provide resources to small- and medium-sized manufacturers that allow them to adopt new technology, upskill and train their people, and ultimately create jobs in their area. Every state has one, they go by different names in different states, and it was recently announced that this program was being defunded.Specifically, funding for 10 state MEP initiatives expired at the end of March, and the government's controlling agency, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), chose not to renew them. This is a moving target, it could change (as it already has once by extending the deadline to the end of the fiscal year), and quite frankly manufacturers don't know what's going to happen. It hasn't been communicated as to why this cut is taking place, but the reality is right now is there is a concern across the manufacturing community that funding for the entire MEP initiative - across all 50 states - might get cut.As a result of this action, a number of manufacturing podcasters got together to discuss the situation and actions that you, as manufacturers, can take to have your voices heard and say "This is ridiculous. My MEP has helped my business and community succeed for XYZ reason." We cannot afford to lose a critical resource like this that so many small- to mid-sized manufacturers rely on. All this an more in today's episode.

Musk, Zuckerberg and Vance have stomped into the EU's canteen, overturned the tables, smashed the glasses, and drawn their pistols. They are scanning a crowd of bewildered Eurocrats and asking menacingly: who really wants a fight over what belongs online? It wasn't meant to be this way. Three years ago the EU agreed a landmark law, the Digital Services Act, or DSA. Hopes were high that hate speech, content that harms minors — as well as fake news and weaponised social media — could be reined in. The biggest platforms would be fined up to 6 percent of global annual turnover if they failed to deal with issues like election interference that amount to a systemic risk. Since then the transatlantic far right has stepped up a campaign to discredit the EU's rules, and often in fanatical terms. Under this new form of McCarthyism, any impediment to online expression is branded as a form of censorship. That is patently absurd. Bans on speech linked to the Nazi period have been in place in parts of Europe for decades. But concerns are growing that the European Commission's ongoing cases against X and Meta under the DSA could become bargaining chips or even get traded away to ease standoffs with the Trump administration. Already the Commission is reportedly lowballing digital markets fines against Silicon Valley giants and talking about simplifying its range of digital regulations — including the DSA. That looks like complying in advance with US intimidation. On the other hand, the Commission could use the Trump administration's bullying tactics to invoke another law — the so-called Anti-Coercion Instrument. That could restrict aspects of Musk's businesses as well as the services of some US digital companies — and it would amount to a more muscular response. In this episode: two prominent MEPs urge the European Commission to hold firm on enforcement of the DSA after their mission to Washington, where they met MAGA hardliners like Congressman Jim Jordan and where they witnessed the kind shocking disdain for Europe echoed most recently in Signal messages shared with The Atlantic. "Everything we are doing in EU is seen as an attempt to be anti-American," says Christel Schaldemose, the Danish social democrat who is a vice president of the European Parliament and an architect of DSA. "That was very, very scary." Christel also is a coordinator on plans to combat foreign influence with a so-called Democracy Shield, which she suggested could allow for suspension of social media in the run up to elections. Sandro Gozi, the Italian liberal who is a former member of French and Italian governments, says the EU must show it has the nerve to impose its laws in the face of U.S. coercion. Sandro says lawmakers would never agree to sacrifice the DSA, which he characterises as "non-negotiable," in exchange for lower tariffs. Sandro also excoriates Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her party for retreating from previous enthusiasm for Ukraine — and for the DSA.Support the show

Last week, Brussels went reeling under another corruption scandal! This time it's Chinese big tech giant Huawei whose offices just behind the European Parliament have been raided - along with those of 15 former and current MEPs from the EPP and S&D groups. Huawei is, according to the Belgian prosecutors, being investigated for ”active corruption within the European Parliament," including "remuneration for taking political positions, excessive gifts like food and travel expenses and regular invitations to football matches ... with a view to promoting purely private commercial interests in the context of political decisions”. The research was done by Follow the Money, Le Soir and Knack and the police raided 21 addresses in Brussels, Flanders, Wallonia and in Portugal and arrested several people. But while all eyes are on Huawei and China, we at CEO want to highlight a deeper, systemic scandal that was there in Qatargate and is here now: and that is the longstanding failure of the European institutions to properly defend democracy from influence operations. There's ongoing and systemic failures of lobby monitoring, transparency, and ethics enforcement (including regarding MEP gifts and conflicts of interest). The EU needs to consolidate and speed up implementation of the ethics body to set up common ethical standards across EU institutions. In this episode, Bram Vranken, campaigner and reseracher at CEO will discuss a report he published in January and which focuses on the standard setting process of the AI act. He uncovered that many of the world's major tech corporations - among them Huawei - are deeply involved in creating permissive, light-weight standards that risk hollowing out the EU's AI Act. In short, in it Bram shows that with little to no transparency, private standard-setting organisations are writing rules that have legal status in the EU. Independent experts and civil society are out-numbered, under-funded, and struggling in the face of the corporate dominance.

There are many more politicians and policymakers from the far right on our TVs, in our social media feeds, and in our legislatures. They have a new swagger and an even more conspicuous disdain for their adversaries. "They act like they own the place," observes Raquel García Hermida-van der Valle, a liberal member of the European Parliament for the Dutch D66 party. Two far-right groups, the Patriots and Sovereigntists, still face a so-called cordon sanitaire. But another, the European Conservatives and Reformists, has been welcomed into a right-wing mainstream that includes the party of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. And, in reality, all three far-right groups have much in common, from xenophobia, to distrust of state institutions, and a fixation on free speech. In this episode: Raquel talks about her recent showdowns with increasingly combative far-right lawmakers including a race-baiting Bulgarian and a conspiracy theorist from Hungary. Raquel speculates that some far-right MEPs have "gone down the rabbit hole" and actually believe the EU is replacing white Christians with Muslims and people of colour. Others, says Raquel, are probably following Steve Bannon's notorious battle plan, "to flood the zone with shit," so as to disorient the media and voters. Raquel also talks about how she's looking to better coordinate with other MEPs to counter a European far right that appears to be growing more openly radical as it grows in size and influence. Take, for example, the case of Hungary under the leadership of Viktor Orbán, the populist prime minister of Hungary since 2010. In 2022, European parliament declared that Hungary could no longer be considered a democracy. MEPs are concerned about several political areas concerning democracy and fundamental rights in Hungary. Some of the main areas are the functioning of its constitutional and electoral system, the independence of the judiciary, corruption and conflicts of interest and freedom of expression, including media pluralism. Academic freedom, freedom of religion, freedom of association, the right to equal treatment, including LGBTIQ rights, the rights of minorities, as well as those of migrants, asylum seekers and refugees, are also problematic. What do these first steps towards authoritarianism look like and what can we do to avoid following the same path? Why do people want to go away from democracy? Are they racist bigots? Gábor Scheiring is a former member of the Hungarian parliament having served from 2010-2014 and an assistant professor of comparative politics at Georgetown University Qatar. He previously served as a Visiting Fellow at Harvard University's Center for European Studies. His research explores the political economy and lived experiences of contemporary economic transformations through quantitative, qualitative, and comparative methods. He focuses on how economic shocks create precarity, leading to mental and physical suffering, and how these processes impact democratic stability. His book, The Retreat of Liberal Democracy, which won the BASEES 2021 Book Award, examines how working-class dislocation and elite co-optation foster illiberalism in Hungary. Do you like the podcast? Trump tariffs loom over Europe: Is a US-EU trade war inevitable?

There is nervousness in Brussels about the incoming US administration. That is not just down to Donald Trump's plans for Ukraine, but also because of his pledge to slap tariffs on EU goods of at least 10 percent. Trump insists that the EU will have to "pay a big price" for not buying enough American exports. That could hit key industrial sectors hard, not least car manufacturing. And officials from the European Central Bank are now warning of the damage that US tariffs would do to economic growth in the eurozone. But is a trade war inevitable, or could the two sides negotiate an off-ramp? We put the question to two MEPs.

Crunch time for new European Commission: European Parliament grills candidates

It's a ritual that happens every five years, and also a test for two of the EU's key institutions. Once all the European Commission's new members have been designated, they go through confirmation hearings before the European Parliament. The parliament gets to flex its muscles vis-à-vis the EU executive and probe beyond the niceties of designates saying the right things about their commitment to European values. Getting through these grillings is not a foregone conclusion: last time, in 2019, three commissioner-designates were rejected. We ask our apnel of MEPs what they look for in a hearing, and if they see any of the current candidates as being particularly problematic.

New EU Tech Chiefs Face Burning Questions, as Digital Innovation Gets Boost From CCIA Europe

As the European Parliament ramps up preparations for the hearings of candidate European Commissioners in early November, the digital sector has a set of burning questions for Europe's next tech chiefs to answer. At this crucial juncture, the Computer & Communications Industry Association (CCIA Europe) is launching two publications designed to guide and support the next Commission and new Members of the European Parliament in shaping Europe's digital future. The Digital Innovation Blueprint and Guide to Effective EU Tech Regulation offer concrete recommendations and insights to lawmakers. They come at a pivotal moment, as the EU struggles with regulatory complexity and declining competitiveness - especially in digital. At the core of the Blueprint are important questions that candidate Commissioners must be able to answer in order to drive digital innovation and boost EU competitiveness. Henna Virkkunen, candidate Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, faces critical questions as overlapping and inconsistent rules consistently hinder digital progress. The landmark Draghi Report also singles out EU over-regulation as one of the main culprits. Hence, tech firms have a pressing question: "Does Virkkunen plan to prioritise proper implementation of existing EU tech rules, and fix what we already have, or will she continue the recent trend of rushing to create even more rules?" Stéphane Séjourné, set to oversee the EU Internal Market, will have to step up the fight against the undermining of the Single Market. We ask: "What do businesses and consumers actually get in return for years of tech regulation? A poorly enforced Single Market with national governments introducing digital barriers and deviating from EU digital rules?" With over 70 new tech rules adopted since 2019, the Guide to Effective EU Tech Regulation makes clear that Europe urgently needs to reflect on lessons learned, ensure more scrutiny and coordination between institutions, and improve (workable) implementation. Indeed, the new Guide offers practical recommendations to improve the overall EU legislative process. On October 2nd, EU lawmakers got an exclusive preview of both publications at CCIA Europe's 15th anniversary celebrations in Brussels. Now they are available for everyone to discover. "Europe's digital agenda needs a fresh start. As Commission and Parliament prepare for a new term, it's time to focus on fostering tech innovation rather than adding regulatory hurdles," said Senior Vice President and Head of CCIA Europe, Daniel Friedlaender. "Unlocking Europe's digital potential is not just a challenge for policymakers, it's an opportunity to deliver benefits for all Europeans. CCIA Europe looks forward to working with the next Commission and new MEPs to ensure that future EU tech regulation is more effective, smarter, and innovation-friendly."

In this message we explore what it truly means to fear God. This week, we connect the wisdom found in Proverbs 24:3-4 and Psalm 111:10 to the stages of building a life that matters. Just as the MEPs, insulation, drywall, and paint are essential in constructing a strong, functional, and comfortable home, our reverence for God is foundational to our spiritual growth. We'll learn from Moses' journey in Exodus 3-4, where his reverence for God led him to extraordinary encounters, yet his imagined fears almost held him back. Through this, we'll see how respecting and trusting God shapes our path, challenges our doubts, and strengthens our faith, helping us build a life that truly honors Him. Let's explore together the stages of our spiritual walk, from foundation to function, and understand the importance of cutting out unbelief as we aspire to draw closer to God.
