Stress is inevitable in teaching, but it doesn't have to run your life. In this episode, Dr. Anna and Dr. Beth welcome back Jolee Jones, Director of Organizational Development and Experiential Learning with Douglas County School District, for a follow-up to our most downloaded episode ever. Jolee brings practical, research-backed strategies to help early career educators recognize stress before it takes over and build the kind of self-awareness that makes a lasting difference. From the MEPS framework for spotting your personal stress signals to the Energy Menu concept for fitting self-care into even the busiest school day, this conversation is packed with tools you can use right away, no extra time or money required. Jolee also digs into why saying yes to everything ultimately hurts everyone, how stress ripples from leadership down through a school, and why happiness for new teachers comes down to one powerful equation: reality minus expectations. Whether you're in your first year or supporting someone who is, this episode is the reminder we all need to put on our own oxygen mask first. Jack Horgan-Jones and Harry McGee join Hugh Linehan to look back on the week in politics:· This week saw the European Parliament approve a € 90 billion package to support Ukraine in its defensive war against Russia. The loan was approved by a comfortable majority, but among those who voted against it were Sinn Féin's two MEPs, Lynn Boylan and Kathleen Funchion. The decision to oppose the measure put them in the company of the likes of Germany's Alternative für Deutschland, Hungary's Fidesz and France's Rassemblement National.· The Government has made a U-turn on the regulation of short-term lets here. After consultation with the tourism industry, Minister for Enterprise Peter Burke decided to change the previous plan to restrict such lets in towns with populations of more than 10,000 to populations of at least 20,000, this move would effectively lift the threat of regulation from potentially thousands of Airbnbs across rural towns here.· The mood was buoyant at the Social Democrat national conference in Cork with the afterglow of Catherine Connolly's presidential election win in evidence, along with polls showing the party has begun to put daylight between itself and the Greens and Labour, who occupy the same political space. Are they about to spearhead a united left movement ahead of the next general election?· Plus, sport and politics collide ahead of the Republic of Ireland's Nations League fixtures against Israel in the autumn. There have been calls for a boycott, but the FAI confirmed on Thursday that the matches would go ahead as planned. Would you like to receive daily insights into world events delivered to your inbox? Europe has experienced numerous crises since Donald Trump returned to the White House: on trade and tariffs; on Ukraine; and perhaps the most surreal one – on Greenland. The latter was unprecedented: NATO's leading member, the US, openly expressing its territorial designs on another NATO member, Denmark. With each emergency, the same calls have been heard for Europe to wake up and take its destiny into its own hands. But how should the EU and the European members of NATO actually make a strategic shift? We put the question to two MEPs.
Joined by Madison Farr, Damon and Damo sit down for a wide-ranging conversation on accountability, leadership, and the lasting effects of how Sailors are treated after mistakes. The episode opens with a brief check-in and an apology for a previous error before Madison shares her experiences in the Navy, including two separate Masts and a tragic incident that shaped how she viewed discipline, leadership, and her own career. The discussion covers fraternization, issues with her LPO, and the idea of not letting getting in trouble define you, along with what accountability should look like after NJP. Damon, Damo, and Madison talk through leadership responsibilities, the difference between consequences and abandonment, and what it means to do right by your people. Lighter moments include early Navy misadventures, her first time checking into a command, and reflections on the good moments from her time in uniform. The conversation also touches on warfare pin restrictions, Madison's current work at MEPS, and what she sees from the other side of the accession process. In the Do Better segment, the guys discuss installation safety, matching energy, navigating transition, and the need for leadership to be less judgmental. The episode closes with Madison grading the Chiefs' Mess, sharing her perspective on DRBs, weighing in on The Rip and Sinners and its record-breaking nominations, and offering feedback on what leaders can do better. The effects of volatile international markets are currently being felt in the bank accounts of UK dairy farmers. Milk prices paid by processors started tumbling in the autumn and there've been further drops this month. Dairy Analyst Chris Walkland discusses the impact of President Trump's trade policy on milk production in the US, which has coincided with a boom in UK and European milk output...leading to a bust. We also consider whether further US trade tariffs as leverage over Greenland could further destabilise dairy trade. We meet a Welsh farmer adding Sunflowers to the cattle feed crops grown on his farm, to cut his feed bill in volatile times. The European Parliament has voted to refer a deal with the South American trade bloc Mercosur to the European Court of Justice, in a move which could see a two year delay in the agreement coming into operation, or even derail it altogether. The European Commission signed the deal with Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay on Saturday. But yesterday MEPs decided its legality needs to be tested. If a water company pollutes rivers or releases sewage illegally, it can be taken to court and fined. The government has just announced that it's reinvesting £29 million pounds from these fines into more than 100 projects to improve 450km of rivers, restore 650 acres of natural habitats and plant 100,000 new trees. The money collected from precious water company fines between April 2022 and 23 was put into a Water Restoration Fund and it's already being spent on local projects. MEPs have today voted to refer the Mercosur trade deal to the EU Court of Justice.By a majority of just 10 votes, MEPs backed a resolution which will see the controversial Mercosur go to judicial review. This could delay the parliament being able to vote on the deal for up to 2 years, which is how long it usually takes for these types of judicial processes to work their way through. To discuss this further, Ciara is joined by Ciaran Mullooly, Independent Ireland MEP.
A majority of EU member states have voted in favour of a landmark free trade deal with Latin American countries. The Mercosur agreement has been 25 years in the making, and its supporters are adamant that it will assert Europe's geostrategic position and benefit consumers. But despite the green light from the EU Council, Mercosur continues to face opposition from countries such as France, as well as from many farmers in the EU. Meanwhile, the European Parliament still has to have its final say. We discuss the deal with two MEPs.
Mercosur is a bad deal. The European Commission has backed a free trade agreement with Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. The European Parliament is set to decide on the future of the Mercosur Agreement. It has taken twenty-five years to get to this point. The European Commission has decided to support this proposition and the smart money says the Parliament will follow suit. But perhaps not. It's not over until it's over. There will be a legal challenge to the deal, including Sinn Féin's MEPs, and a vote in the European Parliament. Sinn Féin is also bringing forward a Dáil motion calling on the government to support the legal action and mandating all MEPs to vote against the deal. Nollaig na mBanSome of the traditions that surround Christmas and the New Year celebrations have changed over recent years. For example, when I was growing up Christmas decorations didn't start appearing in homes until a fortnight or so before the 25th December. Now, Halloween is barely over before Christmas decorations start appearing. Previously also, the tree, crib, and the rest all stayed in place until 6 January – the Feast of the Epiphany, the date on which it is said that the three wise men visited the baby Jesus in Bethlehem. This year decorations were mostly down from the start of the new year. And already Easter eggs are in the shops. However, one celebration that has taken on a new lease of life is Nollaig na mBan - Women's Christmas. It is celebrated on 6 January. It used to be confined to rural areas but that is changing. Nollaig na mBan is the day when the role of women, who generally did all the work for Christmas, was celebrated. It was the day when women get together with other women and enjoy a brief few hours of celebration on their own. Progress on Casement ParkLast week the draft budget for the Executive, announced by Finance Minister John O'Dowd, included an allocation of an additional £40 million toward the rebuilding of the new Casement Stadium.Sadly, despite the 1998 Good Friday Agreement and its principles of equality and parity of esteem, the decades since then have produced many examples of political unionism continuing to resist investment and funding allocation for nationalist areas. Casement Park is a case in point.Last week's announcement is a positive and welcome development.Irish Unity Must be Priority for EU PresidencyOn 1st July the Irish government will assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. This will be its eighth time holding this key administrative and political role within the EU and the first time since Brexit. The agenda for this Presidency is enormous and will affect all of our lives. It will include new legislation as well as significant negotiations around all of the major national and international issues affecting the world at this time – the Israeli genocide in the Gaza Strip, the war in Ukraine, Venezuela, threatened US Foreign Policy adventures toward Greenland, Cuba, Colombia, Nigeria and Iran, famine in Africa, climate change and migration. An Taoiseach Micheál Martin has defined the state's Presidency of the EU as “a Presidency defined by action.”All sounds impressive. But so far no one in the Irish government has said anything about using this unique opportunity to raise the issue of Irish Unity. Thus far, Micheál Martin's approach to Irish Unity can best be described as “a leadership defined by inaction.”
Irish MEPs are returning to Brussels this week to push for stricter food safety measures under the Mercosur trade deal. They want to ensure products meet EU standards and do not contain illegal or harmful growth promoters. They plan to meet colleagues from other countries, including Italy and France, where MEPs are reported to be wavering. The deal was provisionally approved by EU member states last week. Thousands of farmers and supporters, along with representatives from the country's MEPs gathered for a rolling tractor protest in Athlone on Saturday, part of a national demonstration and rally in Athlone to protest against the EU-Mercosur trade agreement. Independent Ireland MEP Ciarán Mullooly says he will call on colleagues to remove South American meat imports as part of the agreement. For more on this, Alan Morrissey was joined live in-studio by Scariff-based Independent Ireland South MEP Michael McNamara and Tulla-based Fianna Fail Minister of State Timmy Dooley on Monday's Morning Focus. The chair of the Clare branch of the Irish Farmers's Association has expressed fear that Irish MEPs may be powerless to resist the European Union's willingness to adopt the Mercusor Deal. Thousands of farmers and supporters, along with representatives from the country's MEPs have gathered in Athlone to protest against the EU-Mercosur trade agreement. The deal was agreed to by 20 EU member states with only Ireland, France, Poland, Austria and Hungary in opposition, however, the deal must be ratified by the European Parliament which is set to vote on the matter in a couple of weeks. Clare IFA Chair Stephen Walsh claims pressure from Germany, which is set to export high volumes of cars to South America, will be difficult to overcome.
The Irish Creamery And Milk Supplier's Association is warning that Clare's dairy sector will also be drastically affected by the Mercosur deal. The controversial trading pact was approved by 21 EU Ambassadors in a vote today, with only Ireland, France, Poland, Austria and Hungary opposing the agreement, while Belgium abstained. The deal could see up to 99,000 tonnes of South American Beef imported into the EU each year, however, MEPs will have another opportunity to reject it in an upcoming vote. Clare ICMSA Secretary Martin McMahon has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan he believes the deal will bring down the price of cattle for all farmers.
Irish Farmers' Association Kerry chair Jason Fleming spoke to Jerry about the Mercosur Deal and he wants MEPS and the Government to lobby strongly against the Mercosur Deal.

The SS Al RawdahFor the first time ever the families of many of the 207 Republican internees held on the Al Rawdah prison ship between 1940 and 1941 met in Belfast. 85 years after their loved ones were interned on the prison hulk the families came together for the launch of Tom Hartley's insightful account of that period. At the beginning of his remarks Tom invited the relatives present to stand. There was spontaneous and sustained applause from the rest of the audience. It was an emotional moment, for the relatives and for those watching, in what was an evening of memory and recollection.Mary McConville whose Uncle ‘Rocky' Burns was held on the Al Rawdah, introduced the event and Tom Hartley explained to the relatives and audience his motivation for writing the book and the forensic approach he took in collecting information. He also drew attention to the poignant fact that two days earlier was the 85 anniversary of the only prisoner to die on the Al Rawdah, John Gaffney, who fell from his hammock and hit his head.Tom reminded us all that following partition in 1920 the Unionist Regime at Stormont moved quickly to consolidate its power and to ensure that nationalists and republicans living in the North posed no threat to their domination. Legislation was introduced to gerrymander electoral boundaries, and deny hundreds of thousands of citizens, mostly nationalist, access to a vote in local elections. Local Councils with nationalist majorities became unionist controlled. Discrimination in employment and housing was built into the structure of the state.A Space in which Dialogue is PossibleLast week Queens University , Belfast and Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) announced a significant new partnership that will establish DKiT as a University College of Queen's University. The all-island educational and economic potential is enormous. Last week also, the Good Friday Agreement Oireachtas committee was told that survival rates for children with congenital heart conditions on the island of Ireland now match the best results anywhere in the world. This is because of 15 years of co-operation between the health services North and South. To add to this good news, the Shared Island Unit announced an additional €50 million for projects and it emerged that a number of MEPs have written to the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola requesting special “observer” status for representatives from the North. The DUP leader Gavin Robinson immediately opposed the EU move. The perennial default position of the DUP and others within political unionism is to condemn and oppose any positive progress. This resistance to change is evident almost daily in the negative atmosphere that has been created in the Assembly, in the Executive and on local councils. The reality is that unionism has gone backwards to the 'NEVER, NEVER, NEVER' stance of past decades. This resistance to change reflects the essential insecurity of political unionism.None of this is new. Anyone with a basic understanding of unionist history since the plantation, and especially since the Home Rule struggle of the late 19th century and into partition, understands this.
Wednesday's inaugural session of the European Parliament's new scrutiny working group, the one set up to investigate transparency around NGO funding, did not exactly go as planned. The meeting descended into chaos within the first half hour. Progressive and left-leaning MEPs walked out almost immediately, calling the probe a politically-motivated assault on civil society. This Wednesday the Commission will present a major omnibus plan to simplify digital rules, everything from data protection to the freshly minted AI Act.Officials call it a way to ease burdens on European companies. Critics including MEPs, NGOs, and a good number of lawyers, say it's more like opening Pandora's box. In this episode, Eric Malzone sits down with Jay Worthy, CEO of MyZone, to dig into how fitness technology can actually keep people coming back instead of collecting dust in a drawer. With over 25 years in the industry, Jay breaks down MyZone's approach to cutting through the noise of endless health data—think MEPs tracking and community-driven motivation rather than just another stream of numbers nobody understands. They get into the real talk about why most wearables fail (spoiler: it's not the tech, it's the lack of support), how behavioral science drives lasting change, and why MyZone's betting on making fitness tracking simpler with their new MyZone Go product that works with devices people already own. The conversation also explores where AI fits into making sense of all that health data without overwhelming users, plus why companies in this space need to stop competing and start collaborating if anyone's serious about getting more people moving. Jay's philosophy boils down to this: motivation beats information every time, and building genuine community connections is what keeps people engaged long after the initial excitement wears off. Elections in Europe are a rollercoaster these days. EU elites were relieved when the pro-EU camp won the parliamentary vote in Moldova, but the Czech legislative election turned out quite differently. Andrej Babiš, a populist and self-proclaimed Trumpist, won the ballot, staging a comeback similar to his colleague in neighbouring Slovakia, Robert Fico. Babiš's victory is clearly a boon to Eurosceptic forces since it was he who, together with Hungary's leader Viktor Orban, set up the Patriots for Europe group in the European Parliament. But does his win have an impact on the EU's help for Ukraine? And on dealing with a more assertive Kremlin, which seems to be testing Europe with drone incursions? We put these questions to two MEPs.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin could be facing a test of his leadership of Fianna Fáil at a party meeting on Wednesday amid widespread anger among TDs and MEPs over Jim Gavin's abandoned presidential campaign. We sit down with two MEPs to discuss France's ballooning debt and deficit, both of which are much higher than the limits set out in the EU's Stability Pact. France being the second-largest economy in the EU, its current political and economic instability could also have an impact on the other member states. So how concerned should Europe be?
As the academic year begins, many students will embark on what has become a rite of passage: studying abroad for part of their course. However, the Erasmus+ programme is not limited to university undergraduates and postgraduates. Since its expansion in 2014, apprentices, trainers, job-seekers, and others have also benefited from these international exchanges. Founded in 1987 as Erasmus, the scheme has supported the personal and professional growth of more than 16 million people. Currently, 33 countries participate fully in Erasmus+ activities, including all 27 EU member states. Yet, Erasmus+ faces challenges, particularly regarding social inclusion. We discuss these issues with our MEPs, who serve on the European Parliament's Committee on Culture and Education (CULT).

Show Description:In this episode of The Manufacturing Culture Podcast, host Jim Mayer sits down with Gina Tabasso, a powerhouse in industrial marketing whose career spans trade publications, Lean Six Sigma certifications, welding credentials, and a deep respect for the people who make manufacturing work.Gina shares how she learned to speak the many “languages” of the industry—sales, marketing, operations, and shop floor realities—and why that fluency matters more than ever. From her time managing publications like Welding Design & Fabrication to launching her own firm, Barracuda B2B, Gina unpacks what makes great marketing in manufacturing—and why so much of what's out there misses the mark. They talk culture, storytelling, the future of the workforce, and the tension between compassion and success in a field that's both evolving and enduring.Whether you're on the floor, in the front office, or helping companies grow from the outside, this is a conversation about connection, clarity, and the kind of leadership this industry needs now.Takeaways:Culture in manufacturing needs to evolve—and that shift starts with listening.Certifications like Lean Six Sigma and Sandler Sales create a strong foundation for marketing that works.Sales and marketing can't operate in silos—they need to collaborate, and speak the same language.Storytelling is more than branding—it's how manufacturers make themselves understood.Applying process discipline (like Lean) to marketing builds measurable, sustainable growth.Resilience isn't just a business trait—it's a human one. And it's everywhere in manufacturing.Automation is coming, but people—especially a well-supported workforce—remain central to the future.Compassion and professionalism are not opposites; they're both essential for long-term success.Building a strong network is just as strategic as any marketing funnel.Self-care matters—even in a high-pressure, production-driven world.Chapters00:00 Understanding Manufacturing Culture05:39 Gina's Journey into Manufacturing08:30 The Role of Certifications in Marketing11:29 Insights from Trade Publications14:26 Marketing Strategies for Manufacturers17:21 The Importance of MEPs in Manufacturing19:55 The Future of Manufacturing and Marketing26:16 Emotional Investment in Work and Client Relationships26:50 The Unique Story of Each Business27:48 Understanding Customer Perception28:40 Addressing Internal Culture and Client Relationships30:06 Strategic Planning for Business Growth31:54 Building a Valuable Network33:02 Challenges in a Male-Dominated Industry35:36 Navigating Job Loss and Career Transitions39:03 Influential Figures in Gina's Journey42:15 The Resilience of Manufacturing46:55 Personal Insights and Advice for Marketers
Foreign minister Casper Veldkamp finally draws a red line over Israel's intervention in Gaza, but will it be the fault line that ruptures the coalition? The conflict is also the focus of protests at ceremonies to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. But at least one of the coalition parties has something to celebrate, as MEPs vote to downgrade the protected status of the wolf. And the close-knit fishing community of Urk launches a scheme to find former residents who were lost at sea.
Today's bonus episode is all about MEPs, and actually a very urgent issue related to MEPs. For context, the Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) is a public-private partnership that delivers comprehensive, proven solutions by helping small and medium-sized manufacturers grow, make operational improvements, and reduce risk.To put it in more simplified terms - MEPs provide resources to small- and medium-sized manufacturers that allow them to adopt new technology, upskill and train their people, and ultimately create jobs in their area. Every state has one, they go by different names in different states, and it was recently announced that this program was being defunded.Specifically, funding for 10 state MEP initiatives expired at the end of March, and the government's controlling agency, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), chose not to renew them. This is a moving target, it could change (as it already has once by extending the deadline to the end of the fiscal year), and quite frankly manufacturers don't know what's going to happen. It hasn't been communicated as to why this cut is taking place, but the reality is right now is there is a concern across the manufacturing community that funding for the entire MEP initiative - across all 50 states - might get cut.As a result of this action, a number of manufacturing podcasters got together to discuss the situation and actions that you, as manufacturers, can take to have your voices heard and say "This is ridiculous. My MEP has helped my business and community succeed for XYZ reason." We cannot afford to lose a critical resource like this that so many small- to mid-sized manufacturers rely on. All this an more in today's episode.
Most small manufacturers don't realize they're being quietly supported by one of the most impactful public-private partnerships in the country. The Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) has long been the hidden backbone behind training programs, grant facilitation, process improvements, and critical tech upgrades for shops across the U.S. But recent Federal decisions to defund these programs—without clear communication or reasoning—have sparked confusion and alarm among industry insiders. In this episode, a passionate roundtable of manufacturers and advocates reveals just how deeply the MEPs have shaped their businesses, supported workforce development, and opened doors to opportunity they couldn't have accessed alone. From AR-integrated quoting tools to automation investment guidance, these stories show a clear economic impact that extends far beyond individual shops—right into the health of local communities and the national manufacturing strategy. If you're just hearing about MEPs now, you're not alone—but you are at risk. This conversation lays out what's at stake, why it matters, and what you can do right now to help save a resource that quietly powers tens of thousands of manufacturers nationwide.
