An Oireachtas committee's been told that a housing development in East Clare has been stalled for three years due to wastewater capacity issues. Kilkishen is one of three villages in Clare where according to Uisce Éireann, there's no additional wastewater capacity or projects planned to address this. In 2024, the local authority refused plans for a 60-unit scheme in the village due to sewerage deficiencies. Responding to Clare Fine Gael TD Joe Cooney, Department of Housing Deputy Secretary General Garret Doocey insists funds are being made available to rectify these problems.

Residents served by the Newport Water Treatment Plant have been living under a Boil Water Notice since May 20th, with many expressing frustration at the lack of clarity around when the issue will be resolved. Concerns have also been raised about communication from Uisce Éireann and the absence of alternative water supplies for affected households. The situation comes as Uisce Éireann prepares for another community engagement event on the proposed Shannon Pipeline later this month, prompting some residents to question confidence in the utility's ability to deliver major infrastructure projects. To discuss these issues, Alan Morrissey was joined by local resident Yvonne Moloney and Killaloe Fianna Fáil Councillor Tony O'Brien. Photo (c) Uisce Eireann
Volunteers are being sought for a popular meals on wheels service expanding into North Clare. Obair has announced that its Inagh route is being extended into Ennistymon in response to demand. Established in Newmarket-on-Fergus over 20 years ago, the Obair Meals on Wheels service also has bases in Kilrush and Lisdoonvarna, and is planning to move into East Clare this summer. Service Coordinator with Obair, Eimear Murphy, says the more volunteers they have on their roster, the better the service can function.

Concerns are growing in East Clare following another incident of illegal dumping in the Kilkishen area, where a large quantity of household waste was discovered—some of which appears to have been deliberately set on fire at the roadside. Kilkishen Tidy Towns has strongly condemned the incident, saying burning rubbish is “never the answer” and highlighting the environmental and community impact of illegal dumping. The issue comes amid wider calls across Clare for stronger enforcement, with discussions ongoing about the potential use of CCTV in known dumping blackspots. To discuss what happened in Kilkishen, the impact on the local community, and what more can be done to tackle illegal dumping, Alan Morrissey was joined by Olivia King of Kilkishen Tidy Towns and O'Callaghan's Mills Fine Gael Councillor Conor Ryan. This year marks a major milestone for one of East Clare's best-loved community events as Scariff Agricultural Show celebrates its 80th anniversary. To mark the occasion, a new Heritage Council-funded project is underway to document and preserve the rich history of the Show, and organisers are now appealing to the public for photographs, programmes, memorabilia and personal memories that tell the story of the event since its beginnings in 1944. The Eight Decades of the Scariff Show: Oral and Community Heritage Project will create a permanent digital archive, capturing the experiences of volunteers, exhibitors, farmers and families who have helped shape the Show over the past eight decades. Joining Alan Morrissey this morning to tell him more about the project, the public appeal and why preserving these stories is so important are Dr Tomás Mac Conmara of Mac Conmara Heritage Consulting, along with Scariff Show Committee members Paddy Doyle and John Blake. There's currently no one working in nursing or general support in either of Clare's Children's Disability Network Teams. New data which has come to light at the latest meeting of the HSE Regional Health Forum Midwest has revealed significant recruitment issues in both of the county's CDNTs, with the East Clare team have a vacancy rate of 20%. To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey was joined by Clare mothers, Kate Finn and Shirley Conway. Photo (c) anyaberkut from Getty Images Pro via Canva.com
A Clare TD is arguing there's a "moral obligation" to dezone lands near wind turbines from wind energy. It follows An Coimisiún Pleanála's decision earlier this month to refuse planning permission for a 50-megawatt wind farm in Ballycar in East Clare. Outling its decision, the planning authority said it wasn't satisfied measures could be implemented to mitigate aviation safety risks for Shannon Airport and AirNav Ireland. Addressing the Taoiseach in the Dáil, Meelick Fianna Fáil Deputy Cathal Crowe says the proposed development would've negatively affected radar infrastructure.
Traditional music legend Martin Hayes is set to perform a special fundraising concert for the East Clare Community Co-op in Scariff next month. The intimate event at McNamara's Bar on June 11th will also feature a guest performer and a special dance performance, with proceeds going towards the Co-op's building purchase fund. To find out more, Daragh Dolan was joined by the Co-op's Fundraising administrator, Linda O'Malley.

New bye-laws are expected to give An Garda Síochána and Clare County Council somewhere to turn when anti-social behaviour occurs at an East Clare tourism site. The regulations approved by elected members of Killaloe Municipal District this week prohibit camping and other potentially harmful activities on Inis Cealtra in Lough Derg. The bye-laws, which come into effect on July 1st, also ban overnight parking at Knockaphort Pier. Whitegate Fine Gael Councillor Pat Burke has been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons the new rules were drafted following issues observed last summer.
Following the strong turnout at the recent Newmarket-on-Fergus Community Energy Event, attention now turns to East Clare. A two-day celebration of nature, organic gardening, and community at the Bealtaine Garden Festival, taking place on 9th & 10th May 2026 in East Clare. Inspired by the ancient Celtic festival of Bealtaine, this family-friendly event features workshops, talks, crafts, and seasonal activities that honour the turning of the year and our connection with the natural world. On Friday's Morning Focus, Alan Morrissey was joined live in-studio by Doug Hyde, one of the festival organisers.
Uisce Éireann has been slammed for its failure to report a potential risk at a Water Treatment Plant in East Clare for six weeks. An EPA audit of the O'Briensbridge Treatment Plant found that an Ultraviolet Disinfection Alarm had been disabled without approval at the plant for a three-week period between December and January. Uisce Éireann failed to notify any authorities until February 12th, and was unaware of high turbidity levels in the water that could've caused contamination. Killaloe Fianna Fáil Councillor Tony O'Brien says it's a disgraceful situation.
A new project intending to prevent young people from becoming involved in anti-social or criminal behaviour has been launched in East Clare. Operated by Foróige, the DERG Youth Diversion Project has been set up to deliver supports to families and support young people in East Clare and North Tipperary in making positive choices. It will operate from two bases in Killaloe and Nenagh, serving a catchment area of almost 63,000 people. Killaloe Fianna Fáil Councillor Tony O'Brien says being given access to wholesome outlets can be lifechanging for a young person.
Three new defibrillators have been rolled out in South-East Clare. The new appliances have been installed at Spar in Ardnarcusha, the Church in Shannon Banks and Applegreen in Westbury. Community First Responder training is expected to ger underway in the near future. Shannonbanks Sinn Féin Councillor James Ryan says it's a huge boost for the region.
This weekend's Killanena Tractor Run has been deferred due to the ongoing fuel crisis. The popular event had been due to take place this Sunday, but will now take place at a later date as the county's fuel reserves have been significantly impacted. This year's renewal will be the 10th running with all proceeds to be donated to the day care centre in Raheen Community Hospital in Tuamgraney. Raheen Hospital Support Group Chair and Maghera Fianna Fáil Councillor, Pat Hayes, says the goodwill is present in the community to refix the event 'when things return to normality'.
Repair and upgrade works at an East Clare cathedral have been funded to the tune of almost €100,000. St Flannan's Cathedral in Killaloe has been granted €95,820 for the repair and re-point of its east gable, south walls, buttresses, south transept and north nave buttresses. The money comes through the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage's Historic Structures Fund which has announced a total of €4.42 million for 40 projects nationwide. Killaloe Fianna Fáil Councillor Tony O'Brien says it's a vote of confidence in the area.
A number of East Clare residents are reportedly experiencing difficulty accessing their homes due to damage on their roads caused by the Killaloe Bypass project. Unveiled last May, the €88 million development saw the construction of a new bridge connecting Killaloe and Ballina as well as a two-kilometre single carriageway bypass. Follwing complaints of parts of nearby roads having sunk due to wear and tear caused by construction vehicles, Killaloe Municipal District has pledged to seek restoration works funding from the Department of Transport. Fianna Fáil Councillor Tony O'Brien, who raised the issue at the latest Killaloe MD meeting, says at the very least, the roads should be restored to the condition they were in before the project began.
As hay fever season returns, many people are feeling the effects of pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds. Also known as seasonal allergic rhinitis, hay fever can cause symptoms when pollen comes into contact with the nose, eyes, mouth, or throat—often worsening between late March and September when pollen counts are highest. Alan Morrissey spoke with East Clare herbalist Leslie Maya Souchere about natural ways to manage hay fever and find relief during allergy season. Image © Afloimages via Canva

CCTV systems aimed at identifying the perpetrators of illegal dumping are set to be rolled out at two locations in Clare. The surveillance cameras will be installed at sites in Kilrush and in the east of the county in May as part of a pilot project. The local authority is set to open the process to public consultation in the coming weeks, with a view to rolling out more systems at blackspots countywide. Quilty Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael Shannon is hopeful it will make a meaningful difference. You can hear more on this story on Clare FM's Morning Focus this Monday from 9am.

It's claimed South-East Clare communities have been left in chaos over heavy-goods vehicles attempting to avoid an impassable bridge. It's understood a lack of warning signage on the main road from Sixmilebridge to Cratloe is allowing artic lorries and coaches to reach Poulawilly Bridge, which has a height restriction of 11.6m. The issue is leaving large lines of traffic with no option to reverse back up the R462, causing major delays, with some reports of damage to farm and residential property. Cathaoirleach of the Shannon Municipal District and Sixmilebridge Fine Gael Councillor John Crowe and Cratloe Fianna Fáil Councillor Pat O'Gorman have been outlining the problem to Clare FM's Daragh Dolan. A major maritime demonstration will take place on the shores of East Clare today in opposition to a large scale infrastructure project. The protest will highlight objections to Uisce Éireann's €6Bn plan to build a pipeline abstracting water from the River Shannon for use in the Midlands and Greater Dublin Area The Boat Rally event is being organised by the Lough Derg Anglers and will commence from the Ballina Slipway at 2pm, before sailing onward to the Parteen Basin. Co-Organiser Cllr Phyll Bugler believes the proposal is deeply flawed. You can listen to the full interview here:
An East Clare School is set to benefit from the allocation of a new Autism class. The Department of Education's announcement brings the total number of additional special classes coming to Clare for the next term to ten. St Joseph's Secondary School in Tulla is the latest to benefit, and will have three specialist Autism classes from September. Principal Juliet Coman says it's a huge boost for the community.
