The weekly sermon from Alfred Almond Bible Church in Almond, NY
Everyone has rules. Very few people are true anarchists, and even they are probably kidding themselves. We may differ on what they are, but we all believe that some things are right and some wrong; and doing justice is nothing more than to right the world’s wrongs. But where does forgiveness fit in? What should we forgive, or how much? Today, we follow Peter’s question, and Jesus’ quite difficult answer, and see what it means for us

Sermon for February 4th, 2024
This sermon looks at forgiveness as seen in Matthew 18:21-35. This passage is a follow up to previous messages in Matthew 18, in wherein we looked at forgiveness when someone is unrepentant. This message discusses what Jesus has to say about forgiveness when repentance is present. He tells the parable of the unforgiving servant and we are given three principals to apply to our lives today.

Big Idea: You must be a generous forgiver. Christ calls for Generous Forgiveness (18:21-22) Because It’s Inevitable that You Will Be sinned against (18:21) Because Your tendency Is to limit Your Forgiveness (18:22) You Have experienced Generous Forgiveness (18:23-27) The Slave Had an un-payable debt(18:23-25). The King Had an unexpected response. When You Don’t, You Become the example of miserly Forgiveness (18:28-30) He forgot His Forgiveness—He Was ungrateful (18:28). He exaggerated The Sin Against Him—He Was proud (18:28). He Demanded More than repentance—He Was vengeful (18:29-30). When You Do, You actually Your Genuine salvation (18:31-35) Those that Have received mercy Should Be Most merciful (18:31-34). Those that Don’t forgive Should question If They’ve Been forgiven (18:35). Forgiveness is a promise not to bring up to their face, not to bring it up behind their back, and not to dwell on it. Projects: • Commit to forgiving as soon as possible (Cf. Luke 17:3-4) • Lean towards mercy, not punishment • Suggested Resources: o John MacArthur, The Freedom and Power of Forgiveness (Wheaton, IL: Crossway, 1998). o kraigkeck.com/some-questions-about-forgiveness/ o kraigkeck.com/do-i-forgive-the-unrepentant-offender/ o kraigkeck.com/i-forgive-you-but-i-need-to-establish-some-boundaries/ o kraigkeck.com/the-new-puritans-dont-do-forgiveness/
The simple meaning of Jesus’ seventy-times-seven (verse 22) is that just as God does not give up on anyone, neither should we. God’s forgiveness is limitless therefore, why do we hold on to our sin? Why do we not approach the throne of grace with a heart of repentance? Furthermore, the multiplied number of seventy-times-seven illustrates a larger point of ongoing forgiveness. Our Lord does remit the guilt of our sin once for all on the cross and admits us into HIS kingdom, but by the same means of remittance, the cross, his forgiveness is ongoing as he preserves and defends us over and over and over again. For what value is God’s pardon if afterward there is no evidence? Therefore, the forgiveness of sin occurs repeatedly and is ongoing. The mercy of our Lord would be worthless if only granted once and never again. For certainly HE has compassion on the many iniquities that we carry and continue to collect throughout our lives of sinful struggle. No one could continue in the kingdom, or the church, if forgiveness only occurred one time and for that one time only. No, our LORD is teaching Peter, and us, in this passage that forgiveness of sin is perpetual and ongoing and often repeated and most importantly, is always ready.

Do you know what it means to "follow" Jesus? Due to social media, in today's society, the word "follow" means to simply press a button and "become a fan" of someone. But to "Follow Jesus" means something totally different. "Following Jesus" means to read and study the Word of God, and apply what we learn from the Word of God to our every day lives; to love people in the same manner that Jesus loves people. So, do you "follow" Jesus, or do you "Follow Jesus"? If you'd like to join us, please visit us at 4218 Boston Ave. Lubbock Texas. A verse-by-verse study in the book of Matthew.
Jesus tells the parable of the unforgiving servant. How this servant was forgiven an unfathomable debt yet then went out and demanded from another servant what was owed to him. We see here that we are much like the unforgiving servant, being forgiven by God the immense debt of our sin yet often being unwilling ourselves to forgive others their tresspasses against us.

Just as a hiker is hindered by a little pebble in the shoe, there are hindrances to the Christian life that if ignored, will create major problems. The biggest of these is unforgiveness.

A Forgiveness Culture
Evangelical Free Church of Canton
Biblical forgiveness is not a matter of feeling better toward an offender, or a matter of forgetting or excusing behavior. God expects us to forgive others exactly the same way that He has forgiven us through Christ, and Matthew 18:21-35 demonstrates just how important forgiveness is for us and for others!

Wouldn't it be amazing if someone paid off all of your financial debt? Jesus shares a parable about someone who was given this experience and we will look at how he responded to this gift of grace. Don't miss the parable of the Unmerciful Servant found in Matthew 18:21-35.

Pastor Jenkins discusses the need to forgive and shares some Biblical and personal stories along the way.
As Christians, the term forgiveness is familiar. But what does it mean to forgive. How should we forgive?
