Matthew 15:29-16:4 | Kingdom Now: The Prerequisites of Grace

"Christmas is DYNOMITE"

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 8, 2026 43:37

In this message from Matthew 15:29–16:4, Pastor Karl examines two very different groups of people who come to Jesus — and what their approach reveals about how we receive grace. The first group comes from the Decapolis, a Gentile region with no religious standing or covenant claim. They bring broken bodies, unspoken needs, and nothing to offer — and Jesus meets them with compassion, healing, and even provision they didn't know to ask for. The second group, the Pharisees and Sadducees, arrives with suspicion and a demand for proof — and Jesus refuses to perform for them. The contrast surfaces a powerful truth: Jesus has endless compassion for those who come to him needy, but no obligation to satisfy those who come feeling entitled. Unworthiness isn't a disqualification for grace — it's the prerequisite for it.Pastor Karl unpacks why the disciples hesitated to feed the 4,000 (it wasn't that they forgot what Jesus could do — it was that they questioned who he'd do it for), what it really means to "fall from grace," and why the cross is the only reliable lens through which to interpret God's love. When we bring our "not enough" to Jesus, we find that inadequacy is exactly the raw material he's looking for.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 8:00am, 9:30am & 11:00am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

When we develop charity, everything in our lives gets better. We develop the capacity to treat others with more kindness and grace, and our self-respect increases as we do so. We live more in alignment with our values and create the ability to truly love. As our charity increases, so does our satisfaction, fulfilment, and joy in life. Charity creates in us the ability to honor the agency of others and develop relationships that are honest and intimate. Healing from shame is not something we can accomplish on our own. It is a slow, daily journey that requires the supernatural work of God in our hearts. In this episode, I begin a new series on God's Tools for Healing Shame by sharing part of my own story. Learning to live in the power of the cross and resurrection moved me forward in profound ways, but God did not stop there. He continued to use practical, life-giving tools to transform my thinking and restore my heart. Through His Word, I was taught truth that replaced the lies I believed about myself. Worship and gratitude shifted my focus away from shame and back to God's goodness. The encouragement and presence of the body of Christ strengthened me when I felt weak. And through it all, God's grace helped me trust Him with my life. In this episode, I share how these tools became part of my healing journey and how they can help bring freedom and transformation to yours as well. God requires obedience from His children, even on hard things like forgiving others who have hurt us. When He asks something of us that feels too hard to do, we tend to put it off and then wonder down the road why He's not active in our lives. We need to stop putting off obedience and rather us this day that He has given us to follow Him no matter what He has asked.

Froma biblical perspective, forgiveness is not a small thing. It is not a sideissue. It is at the very heart of the gospel. Without forgiveness, there is nosalvation, no peace with God, and no real freedom in life. The Bible says in Ephesians1:7,“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness ofsins, according to the riches of His grace.” Forgiveness is God's graciousact of removing our guilt, canceling our debt of sin, and restoring ourrelationship with Him—based entirely on what Jesus Christ has done for us onthe cross.Tobe forgiven means that God no longer holds my sin against me. He no longercondemns me. My record has been cleared, and my relationship with Him has beenrestored. Thatis why David could say in Psalm 32:1–2, “Blessed is he whosetransgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man to whom theLORD does not impute iniquity.” That word blessed means deeplyjoyful, relieved, and at rest. There is no freedom like knowing God is nolonger against you. Now, how do we know we are forgiven? What are some of theevidences of forgiveness in our lives—mentally, spiritually, and emotionally?  First, there is mental evidence. When I am forgiven, I no longer live underconstant condemnation. I may remember my past, but I am no longer crushed byit. I believe God's Word over my feelings. Romans 8:1 tells us, “Thereis therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.” Godsays in Isaiah 43:25, “I… am He who blots out your transgressions forMy own sake, and I will not remember your sins.” God is not saying Heforgets in the human sense, but that He no longer counts our sins against us.The debt has been paid.  Second, there is spiritual evidence. Forgiveness brings peace with God. Fear isreplaced with confidence. Prayer becomes open and honest. Worship becomesjoyful instead of heavy. Romans 5:1 says, “Therefore, having beenjustified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Forgivenessrestores fellowship with God. We are no longer hiding. We are no longerrunning. We draw near to Him with full assurance of faith. Third, there is emotional evidence. Forgiveness brings relief instead ofconstant guilt. Gratitude replaces shame. Joy begins to return. David prayed inPsalm 51:12, “Restore to me the joy of Your salvation.”Forgivenessdoes not erase all consequences, but it restores joy, peace, and freedom in theheart. Nowlet's talk about forgiveness from another angle—forgiving others. Biblicalforgiveness does not mean forgetting, excusing the sin, or pretending it didnot hurt. Forgiveness is a decision to release someone from the debt they oweyou and to leave justice in God's hands. The Bible says in Romans 12:19,“Beloved, do not avenge yourselves… for it is written, ‘Vengeance is Mine, Iwill repay,' says the Lord.” When I have truly forgiven someone, I am nolonger seeking revenge. I am no longer rehearsing the offense to fuel anger. Ican pray for them sincerely. I desire their good, not their harm. 1 Corinthians 13:5 says, “Love… keeps no record of wrongs.”That is how God forgives us. He does not shame us. He does not hold ourpast over our heads. He restores us to fellowship. Andabove all, we look to Jesus. As He hung on the cross in Luke 23:34,Jesus said, “Father, forgive them.”Forgivenessflows from grace, not from worthiness. Let me close with this thought. To knowthat my sins are forgiven means my past no longer defines me, my present isfilled with peace, and my future is secure in Christ. And when I trulyunderstand how much I have been forgiven, I find the grace to forgive others. Thatis why Paul tells us in Ephesians 4:32,“Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.” MayGod help us to live in the freedom of His forgiveness—and to extend that samegrace to others.

Richard Ellis Talks

It is absurd for us to think that we can approach God and seek forgiveness and that He will freely give it to us while at the same time we withhold forgiveness from someone who has wronged us. We must, by the power of His Spirit, forgive others no matter how evil the grievance and let it go.

In When Easy Isn't Worth It, Pastor Rodney reminded us that life is hard, people are complicated—but God is still good. This week's message was personal and timely, as we processed both national tragedy and private battles. Joseph's story gave us a roadmap: release the offense, shift your perspective, and take the high road. Joseph was betrayed, forgotten, and falsely accused. But God did not forget him. God raised him up. And when the time came, Joseph didn't retaliate—he reassured. He spoke kindly. He blessed the very people who hurt him. That's what spiritual maturity looks like. That's what kingdom impact requires. So what about you? What's going on in your world? Who do you need to release? Where do you need to zoom out and stop living as a victim of the past? Maybe it's time to stop holding the match of bitterness—and start walking in the freedom forgiveness brings. If you missed it, this message will both challenge and strengthen you. Because true freedom? Read Online“If you forgive others their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your transgressions.” Matthew 6:14–15It's truly amazing how often our Lord exhorts us to forgive. Much of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, from which we have been reading all week, continually calls us to offer mercy and forgiveness to others. And in the passage above from the end of today's Gospel, Jesus offers us the consequences of not heeding His exhortations. This passage is a sort of addendum to the “Our Father” prayer which immediately precedes it. The Our Father prayer gives us seven petitions, one of them being “forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.” It's interesting to note that as soon as Jesus taught us this prayer with its seven petitions, He then re-emphasised one of those petitions by stating it again as is seen in the passage quoted above. This added emphasis should assure us of the seriousness of this petition. At first, Jesus simply tells us to pray for forgiveness “as we forgive.” But He then makes it clear that if we fail to do so, we will not be forgiven ourselves. This should highly motivate us to make every effort possible to completely forgive others from the deepest depths of our hearts.Who do you need to forgive? Forgiveness can be a confusing endeavor at times. The act of forgiveness gets confusing when our feelings do not reflect the choice we make in our will. It is a common experience that when we make the interior choice to forgive another, we still feel anger toward them. But these disordered feelings should not deter us nor should we allow them to cause doubt in what we need to do. Forgiveness is first an act of the will. It's a prayerful choice to say to another that you do not hold their sin against them. Forgiveness does not pretend that no sin was committed. On the contrary, if there were no sin committed, then there would be no need for forgiveness. So the very act of forgiving is also an acknowledgment of the sin that needs to be forgiven. When you make the choice to forgive another, and if your feelings do not immediately follow after, keep forgiving them in your heart. Pray for them. Try to change the way you think about them. Do not dwell upon the hurt that they have inflicted. Think, instead, about their dignity as a person, the love God has for them and the love you must continue to foster for them. Forgive, forgive and forgive again. Never stop and never tire of this act of mercy. If you do this, you may even discover that your feelings and passions eventually align with the choice you have made.Reflect, today, upon any lingering feelings of anger you experience. Address those feelings by the free and total choice to forgive the person with whom you are angry. Do so now, later today, tomorrow and on and on. Go on the offensive against anger and bitterness by overwhelming it with your personal act of forgiveness and you will find that God will begin to free you of the heavy burden that a lack of forgiveness imposes. My forgiving Lord, You offer the perfection of forgiveness to me and call me to do the same toward others. I pray for Your forgiveness in my life. I am sorry for my sin and beg for Your mercy. In exchange for this holy gift, I pledge to You today to forgive everyone who has sinned against me. I especially forgive those with whom I remain angry. Free me from this anger, dear Lord, so that I may reap the full benefits of Your mercy in my life. Many of us dream of living a luxurious life, and we tend to confine that idea to materialistic luxury, houses and cars and clothing and jewelry and travel, all the things money can buy. And yet there is another type of luxury I want to talk about with you today, and it's the luxury of living in alignment with our God-given possibility, the luxury of living a life that creates more energy than it expends, a life of feeling amazing in the love we have for ourselves, for others, and for God. This is luxury that feels like a pearl of great price, something we are willing to sacrifice our tolerable life for. Comments? Questions? Send us a message!Welcome to Podcast 174. Today I'm with Dr. Bruce Hebel, author of the incredible, life altering book Forgiving Forward: Experience the Freedom of the Gospel through the Power of Forgiveness. All close followers of Jesus Christ know that we should forgive others, but there are things about forgiveness that are about as clear as mud to us. In this episode of SFTP, we talked with Bruce about the common misconceptions that are out there about what forgiveness really means, and how to actually do it.Among the misconceptions are the following ones:-forgiveness is not a process (it's a decision)-to forgive someone, there's no need to go to that person and tell him/her. -Forgiveness is transacted with the Father. See Mark 11:25-26-forgiveness is not the same thing as reconciliation-forgiveness is not salvific; but, forgiveness of the wounds of others determines how the Father acts toward us in this life (Matthew 6:12, 14-15)And more...Feedback and/or questions welcomed! For Poimen Ministries, its staff, ministries, and focus, go to poimenministries.com. Sunday Service: Forgiving others is not optional but a fundamental sign of being a believer. Jesus repeatedly emphasizes that we must forgive all offenses, both small and great, no matter how often they occur. Because we have received God's infinite mercy, we are required to extend the same grace of forgiveness to others. If we fail to do so, God will remove His forgiveness, highlighting that the sins He has pardoned us for far outweigh any wrongdoing we may endure from others. Expectation is a funny word. It means that we think something should happen a certain way or that someone should behave in a certain way, two things we rarely, if ever, have control over. What I've found is that expectations I have are often a cause of shame for the other person, and also for me. And shame is never a productive emotion. And yet, it's hard not to have expectations. So, how do we move away from the expectations we feel entitled to have and instead offer more grace for humanity and more kindness for struggle?
