In this powerful episode, host Kyrie delves into an emotional conversation with Dean Smith, a man whose life was forever altered by an unimaginable tragedy. Dean shares his harrowing story of coming to terms with the brutal murder of his beloved mother by a man named "Bob." Initially consumed by anger and vengeance, Dean's journey takes a dramatic turn when he's taken in by a local church leader, who poses a question that would shape the rest of his life: "How's your journey of forgiveness going?" Dean opens up about his struggle to forgive the man who shattered his world, even going so far as to vow that he would one day take Bob's life. He candidly discusses the destructive coping mechanisms he developed, which led to a spiral of alcohol issues and the dissolution of his marriage. However, as he finally begins to confront his inner demons and the hatred he held for Bob, Dean embarks on a path toward forgiveness and self-healing. The pivotal moment arrives when Dean decides to reach out to Bob, who has been released from prison, to express his forgiveness and extend a hand to help Bob forgive himself. Their ongoing phone conversations eventually lead Dean to make a life-changing decision—to travel across the country and meet with Bob in person, resulting in a touching and transformative documentary called "Live to Forgive." Dean's story serves as a profound reminder that we all have our "Bobs" in our lives, whether they are external individuals or the inner struggles we grapple with. Without genuine forgiveness, we risk developing destructive coping mechanisms that can consume us. Join us as we explore Dean Smith's journey of redemption and discover the incredible power of forgiveness and healing. Do you know what it means to "follow" Jesus? Due to social media, in today's society, the word "follow" means to simply press a button and "become a fan" of someone. But to "Follow Jesus" means something totally different. "Following Jesus" means to read and study the Word of God, and apply what we learn from the Word of God to our every day lives; to love people in the same manner that Jesus loves people. So, do you "follow" Jesus, or do you "Follow Jesus"? If you'd like to join us, please visit us at 4218 Boston Ave. Lubbock Texas. Have you ever been hurt - disappointed by a friend, family member, church leader, or co-worker? LIVE TO FORGIVE I myself always strive to have a conscience without offense toward God and men. (Acts 24:16) Being angry at God or holding bitterness towards someone that hurt you will hinder your relationship with God. If you live on this earth and breathe air, you will have many opportunities to experience offense, hurt, hatred, and betrayal. Jesus said that offense and hatred in the Church would be two signs of the last days. Matthew 24:10 Jesus said, “And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another.” Do you like books? Jason Romano Spectrum Sports - Former ESPN Producer There are so many around us who have lived a life with an alcoholic and abusive parent, or spouse. Perhaps you have been the abuser, maybe you are still living a life of abuse. Abuse does not have to be physical. Sometimes the abuse is verbal. A mean spirited lashing out. But the truth is abuse can be in many forms and those who are being abused can fall into a victim mentality. How do you move forward? How do you heal? The fact is the anger and the pain is real, and that's okay...but you cannot stay there forever. If you want to get through it you have to Forgive to begin the process, yes I said process of forgiveness. Yes, we must forgive if we truly want to live a free life from the pain. No one knows this better than former ESPN producer Jason Romano, for 17 years Jason worked for the world wide leader in sports on such programs as Game Night, Monday Night Football, College Game Day, and more! Sports Spectrum Podcast host Jason Romano joins the program once again to talk with Benson about the podcast as well as his book, 'Live to Forgive'. Jason also shares his testimony of how first came to know Jesus Christ as his savior.
Jason is a former ESPN Producer and author of Live to Forgive which is available now (www.jasonromano.com/book). Jason will talk about the difficulty and freedom in forgiving his alcoholic dad. Discussion Questions Working at ESPN, Jason got to meet a lot of athletes and celebrities. Who would be your favorite athlete to meet and hang out with for a day? Jason shares about his broken relationship with his dad due to divorce and alcohol. What is your relationship with your dad like? Discuss the four stages of forgiveness: Feeling the Pain - not masking pain and acting like it’s not there, but opening up about anger, sadness, frustration, disappointment. Evaluating the Trauma - evaluate and see what has happened, take inventory, identify what has been affected, developing healthy boundaries. Transforming the Wound - moving from the feelings and effects you have towards forgiveness rather than lashing out or feeling entitled to the hurt. Forgiving the Abuser - letting go of the bitterness, not condoning their behavior, freeing yourself and following the example we see in scripture of God forgiving us. Read Ephesians 4:31-32 and Colossians 3:13. How do these verses speak about forgiveness? Jon mentioned breaking a cycle when we forgive. How have you this cycle in a relationship yourself? Jason shared about his career change when he finally surrendered his plans and said “yes” to what God wanted. Do you feel like you have done that in your own work career? Are you doing what God has called you to do? Do you agree with this statement: “Forgiveness is not a weakness, it is a strength”? Does our culture agree with that? Fun question to end on: Who is your favorite BIble character and why?

Today Nathan uses Matthew 18:23-35 to illustrate forgiveness in two points: receiving forgiveness from the King and passing it in the same way to others.
Dean Smith founded Live To Forgive Ministries in 2007. His mission is to spread the message of forgiveness based on the Word of God and his own personal testimony around the world. He preaches powerful messages about love, grace, and reconciliation. Thousands of people have been inspired to trust God with their unforgiveness and have been set free from its heavy burden based on his appearances in churches, television and on the radio. When Dean was twelve his mother was murdered by his stepdad, Bob. He became a Christian but knew that he was not receiving all that God wanted to bless him with because of the anger and resentment he harbored towards his stepdad. He tried to escape with drugs and alcohol for many years until he discovered that there was no way around God for the relief he needed. In 1999, Dean handed over his unforgiveness and resentment to God and his heart was transformed. Surrendering his bitterness to God began the journey that ultimately lead him across the country to reconcile, bless, love, and help Bob. Dean challenges Christians to stop overlooking the unforgiveness in their lives. His stories bring laughter and tears and encourage people to take the step of faith to release their bitterness and anger to God and trust his healing power. He explains how one step of forgiveness can lead to a lifetime of blessings. www.livetoforgive.com
