Rather than expecting quick fixes and programmatic responses, we need patience to make lasting improvement over time.Second, the issues people face on the other side of the world are the same issues that we face in our own communities. Having a strategy that takes this into account will result in a more healthy, integrated ministry. And finally, take a step back and look at your global partners to see what they're doing well, and then find ways to learn from them. There is so much wisdom around us if we are open to it.Learn More about Re-Imagining Short-Term MissionsLearn More about Bethany Community ChurchLearn more about OneChild HERE!

Hosts Yasmine Vaughan and Dr. Laura Horvath:We're happy to have with us today, Elli Oswald from Faith to Action, to talk about how they share with others best practices in short term missions. In particular, we are eager to have her talk about the importance of ethical missions in regard to safety and protection of children. Elli Oswald is the Executive Director of the Faith to Action Initiative, which seeks to elevate best practices in orphan care, specifically recognizing the importance of family in the life of every child. Prior to this role, she served the Missions Pastor at Bethany Community Church in Seattle. Elli also served on World Vision's Child Development and Rights Technical Team, specializing in community-based care for children deprived of parental care. Thanks for joining us, Elli!Short term missions are a vital part of the work of organizations supporting missions in the majority world. When done right, short term missions enable people to travel somewhere and engage meaningfully in support of others that lifts and enriches both the missioner and the recipient. Additionally, to put it bluntly, short term missions are often a means to enable usually western partners to ‘tell the story' to help raise funds to support the local missions on the ground. However, this can lead to all kinds of issues of concern, especially when those missions are focused on orphans and vulnerable children. Helpful links! This episode has been a long time in the making. We knew that to cover our varied perspectives on grief, loss, and end-of-life, a discussion on faith traditions would be an important part. The world around us infers that talking about death is not the same as talking about the joy of birth or the happiest of life's milestones. Certainly this unspoken “sweeping under the rug” of what is actually happening to all people and all families can feel so isolating. We wanted to hear some messages of love and hope from those at the front lines of faith and spirituality, whatever your faith or spirituality may be. We recognize that all of us approach life and death in general from the perspective of our faith traditions, our family cultures, and the traditions and culture we choose as adults. All this shapes how we approach our end-of-life planning. Senior Hosts and Producers, Lisa Laudico and Natalia Green, along with Hosts Shonte Drakeford, Ashley Fernandez, Ellen Landsberger, and Lynda Weatherby interviewed 10 faith leaders. We hear from Jaclyn Roessel, Navajo Nation culture leader; Minister Barbara Bigelow and Elder Chester N. Bigelow of the New Samaritan Baptist Church; Reverend Kendy Easley, of Bethany Community Church; Rabbi Mychal Springer, Chaplain & Manager of Clinical Pastoral Education at NY-Presbyterian Hospital; M.R. Ravi Vaidyanaat Sivachariar, Spiritual Leader of The Hindu Temple Society of North America; Brother Marcus Martin, Leader, Church of Jesus Christs of Latter-Day Saints; Chaplain Rhonda Alderman and Tupten Tendhar, Professor of Buddhism, Non-violence & Peace Studies. Our last interview is with Dr. Kamal Abu-Shamsieh, director of the inter-religious chaplaincy program at the graduate theological union in Berkeley, CA. He sums up how we feel perfectly: “We need to look at death from a more human way. And when I say we, I don't mean just Muslims. When I say we, I say before we were Muslims, before we were Catholics, before we were Jews, before we were Hindus in those, before we were secular humanists, we were humans." Thanks for listening. In this episode, Jeff and Terra dive into a conversation many leaders want to have but are uncertain where to begin or how to do it well. They discuss the tension pastors and Christian leaders experience in trying to hold true to God's Word and leaning into the complex challenges of their communities, such as the LGBTQ community and their real needs. There are very few who know how to love well, without confusing love with “no limits”. This intro may have already triggered some of you as leaders practice and hold a wide variety of beliefs. Please hang around for a bit. We hope you will find this conversation helpful wherever you land in your theology. Our guest is very familiar with leading in uncomfortable places for many decades and his principles might be helpful and even challenging to some. Pastor Richard Dahlstrom was the senior pastor for Bethany Community Church, a multi-site campus church in the heart of Seattle, Washington, for over 25 years. He is a gifted author, speaker and teacher, with a heart full of grace. He is the author of several books, including, “The Colors of Hope: Becoming People of Mercy, Justice and Love” and “The Map is Not the Journey: Faith Renewed While Hiking The Alps” Richard believes healthy people are the foundation of healthy marriages, family systems, businesses, and faith communities. His desire to guide people toward wholeness finds expression in teaching, coaching, guiding Ancient Paths experiences, and writing. Married for 40 years to Donna Dahlstrom, he and Donna have three grown children and three grandchildren. He is also the founding Director of Spirit Soul Body, an organization with a mission to bring people one step closer to wholeness.
