A ceasefire is holding in Gaza. Aid is beginning to flow. The remaining Israeli hostages have been released, as have nearly 2,000 Palestinians from Israeli detention. This has been a truly remarkable day in the Middle East. But can this positive momentum be sustained? I recorded this conversation with Matt Duss of the Center for International Policy just moments after Donald Trump met with an impressive array of world leaders in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, in a ceremony designed to cement his personal investment in this peace plan. We kick off by discussing the significance of the spectacle and ceremony in Sharm el-Sheikh, then have a longer conversation about how the ceasefire came together and the many pitfalls that remain. This ceasefire is fragile. Hamas is reconstituting. And the Israeli government remains opposed to a viable Palestinian State. But this is nonetheless a significant inflection point after two years of brutal war.

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Editor David Horovitz joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. We begin the program by describing the joy and relief experienced by families of released hostages -- and all Israelis -- as they were reunited with their loved ones. However, Hamas handed over the bodies of only four dead hostages, with Israel and the families of the remaining 24 accusing the terror group of breaching its commitments under the ceasefire. The International Committee of the Red Cross said that it will take time before the bodies of all the dead hostages are returned, calling it a “massive challenge” given the difficulties of finding remains amid Gaza’s rubble. The Hostages and Missing Families Forum said that it will hold an emergency meeting tonight as anger mounts. Yesterday afternoon, after the 20 living hostages had returned home, US President Donald Trump spoke at the Knesset and declared “the historic dawn of the new Middle East.” Trump said it marked “not only the end of war, but the end of an age of terror and death and the beginning of the age of faith and hope and of God.” Horovitz paints a picture of the atmosphere at the Knesset and delves into noteworthy statements. Following his Knesset speech, Trump met with the leaders of Qatar, Egypt and Turkey and signed a document in Sharm el-Sheikh aimed at enshrining the Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal between Israel and Hamas. Today, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he will seek the support of Gulf states, the United States and Europe for the reconstruction of Gaza under the new ceasefire deal, and he believes project financing will be provided swiftly. La operación fue meticulosamente planificada: primero se liberaron los rehenes, una noticia que capturó la atención mundial mientras el Air Force One volaba hacia Israel. Tras visitar Jerusalén, donde fue ovacionado en el Knéset, Trump anunció el fin de la guerra en Gaza y su ambicioso plan para extender la paz a todo Oriente Próximo. En su discurso, calificó el acuerdo como el “amanecer histórico” de un nuevo Oriente Medio, aunque, eso sí, reconoció la dificultad de pacificar una región tan conflictiva. Lo de llevar la paz a esa parte del mundo ha sido un objetivo recurrente de varios presidentes de EEUU. Pero los resultados no siempre fueron los deseados. Jimmy Carter medió en el acuerdo entre Egipto e Israel en los 70, pero al mismo tiempo se desató una crisis con Irán. Bill Clinton impulsó los Acuerdos de Oslo, que se vinieron abajo unos años después con la segunda intifada. Los Bush, padre e hijo, intervinieron en Kuwait e Irak. Esta última intervención fue el origen de una ocupación muy prolongada. Trump ha preferido valerse de sus relaciones personales y de su talante transaccional para presionar a Hamás y acercar al acuerdo a los principales Gobiernos de la región. Tras pasar por Jerusalén, voló a Sharm el-Sheij, en Egipto, y se puso al frente de una gran cumbre con mandatarios de Europa y Oriente Medio. Una cumbre en la que no estaba Netanyahu. Algunos países árabes tratan de que no se les asocie con el primer ministro israelí por temor a que eso les cree problemas en casa, o quizá porque no tienen del todo claro que esto vaya a funcionar. La cumbre culminó con un compromiso de paz algo vago que firmaron todos. El plan es un punto de partida positivo en una región que lleva dos años sumida en conflictos desde el Mar Rojo hasta el Líbano. El acuerdo de Gaza es un triunfo para Trump, pero aún queda mucho trabajo por hacer. Hay que reunir a esa fuerza internacional que garantice la seguridad en Gaza, Hamas tiene que desarmarse de forma efectiva y verificada, y aún no se sabe quien financiará la reconstrucción de la franja de Gaza. Trump, por su parte, quiere ahora conseguir un acuerdo regional más ambicioso que incluya el programa nuclear iraní. Ese plan parte del marco del acuerdo de Abraham de 2020, gracias al cual Israel pudo normalizar relaciones con los Emiratos, Bahrein, Sudán y Marruecos, pero aún falta que se adhieran Estados importantes como Arabia Saudí. A diferencia de Bush en Irak, Trump no quiere soluciones militares. Su intención es que los países árabes reconozcan a Israel por interés propio. Pero la historia de Oriente medio está repleta de grandes planes fallidos, así que lo mejor será la cautela y la constancia. Esto último le corresponde a Trump, que si quiere transformar oriente medio deberá armarse de paciencia y mantener el esfuerzo hasta el final de su mandato. Este lunes, 13 de octubre de 2025, quedará marcado en el calendario por la consolidación de un alto el fuego en Gaza. Durante la jornada se han reunido en la ciudad balneario de Sharm el Sheij, en Egipto, más de veinte líderes mundiales para presenciar la firma de un acuerdo presidido por el presidente estadounidense, Donald Trump, y su anfitrión, Abdel Fattah al Sisi. En el 24 horas, de RNE, ponemos el foco en esta noticia y analizamos el acuerdo con Ignacio Álvarez-Ossorio, catedrático de Estudios Árabes e Islámicos en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid.Álvarez-Ossorio ha considerado que la paz en Gaza "es muy precaria" y ha incidido en que "no ha tenido en cuenta las reivindicaciones palestinas", ya que "el actor palestino no ha estado representado en las negociaciones". Además, ha apuntado que "no hay un horizonte político para la solución de los dos Estados; es decir, en ningún momento se menciona que al final del camino habrá un Estado palestino". Since President Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu announced the groundbreaking Peace Proposal for the Israel-Hamas war and, more broadly, the Middle East, speculation as to what it all means is rampant.I caught up with State of Tel Aviv and Beyond regular guest, Lt. Col. (Res.) and Senior FDD Fellow, Jonathan Conricus, to take a hard look at what the 21 (now 20) point plan sets out. Bibi was beaming at the White House when it was announced but it's not all roses for Israel. Even before the announcement, Netanyahu was basically forced to swallow a clump of thorns. His phone call to the Emir of Qatar - during which he read from a prepared script and apologized for having approved an air attack on senior Hamas operatives meeting in Doha on September 9 to discuss a hostage deal - was just the first of many challenges to be faced. We wrote about that moment last week - which caused many politicians to rip into Bibi.But he did it. And Trump seems to have managed the inconceivable, getting Qatar and all significant middle eastern Arab nations to step up and publicly support the plan. It's an extraordinary accomplishment, made possible only because middle eastern nations respect Trump. And that is because they fear him. For more on that read this piece that we dropped last week.Conricus and I go straight to it, getting into what it means for the hostages, Hamas and Israel. Who will secure the Strip and who will govern? Is de-militarization of Gaza realistic? Will Hamas accept the terms of expulsion from the Gaza Strip? La crisis de Suez de 1956, también conocida como la Guerra del Sinaí, fue el canto del cisne del imperialismo europeo, fortaleció el nacionalismo árabe y consolidó la el mundo bipolar de la guerra fría con Estados Unidos y la Unión Soviética como dos únicas superpotencias. El origen de la crisis hay que ir a buscarlo al canal de Suez, inaugurado en 1869 y arteria vital para el comercio internacional. En 1955 por él pasaba el 50% de todo el petróleo que se consumía en el mundo, pero lo explotaba una compañía anglo-francesa. Los británicos habían controlado Egipto hasta 1922, año en el que, tras la fachada de una independencia nominal, se convirtió en un protectorado de facto. La Revolución de 1952, acaudillada por Gamal Abdel Nasser, abolió la monarquía y promovió el panarabismo para liberar a su país del yugo colonial. Pero no disponía de recursos, así que propuso construir una gran presa en Asuán que permitiese regular el cauce del Nilo y generar electricidad. No podía financiar su construcción y eso le llevó a pedir dinero en Occidente, donde le ofrecieron un préstamo. En paralelo Nasser negoció la compra de armas soviéticas y reconoció a la China popular, lo que alarmó a Estados Unidos que canceló el préstamo para presionarle. Nasser podía agachar la cabeza o elevar la apuesta. Escogió lo segundo. El 26 de julio de 1956, nacionalizó el canal para financiar la presa y reafirmar la soberanía egipcia. Eso era un órdago para el Reino Unido y Francia que dependían del petróleo que transitaba por Suez. Israel, muy afectado por el bloqueo del estrecho de Tirán y los ataques de guerrilleros palestinos desde Gaza, vio en aquello una oportunidad para debilitar a Egipto. Británicos, franceses e israelíes se reunieron en secreto cerca de París y acordaron el protocolo de Sèvres, por el cual se coordinaban para efectuar una operación que consistiría en que Israel se encargase de atacar a Egipto mientras los europeos intervendrían después para proteger el canal. El 29 de octubre Israel lanzó la Operación Kadesh, destruyeron la fuerza aérea egipcia y capturaron Gaza y Sharm el-Sheij. El día 30, el Reino Unido y Francia emitieron un ultimátum exigiendo la retirada de ambos ejércitos de la zona del canal. El 5 de noviembre paracaidistas anglo-franceses tomaron Port Said, pero la resistencia egipcia, que bloqueó el canal hundiendo varios buques, complicaron la operación. Estados Unidos no había sido informado, lo que molestó especialmente a su presidente, Dwight Eisenhower. Enfurecido, obligó a británicos y franceses a retirarse y se encargó personalmente de que una fuerza especial de la ONU se desplegase en el canal. La URSS de Jruschov hizo el resto amenazando al Reino Unido y Francia con un ataque nuclear. Un mes más tarde los europeos abandonaron Egipto con el rabo entre las piernas. La crisis supuso una humillación histórica para las dos grandes potencias del siglo XIX. US bureau chief Jacob Magid joins host Jessica Steinberg for today's episode. Following the early morning Iranian rocket attack that directly hit Beersheba's Soroka Medical Center and buildings in Ramat Gan and Holon, Magid discusses the likelihood of the US getting involved in the Israel-Iran conflict. He notes that the stance of US President Donald Trump regarding US involvement has shifted dramatically in recent days, moving from very unlikely to highly possible. Magid also discusses how Republican support for Israel is divided on the issue of the US intervention in the Iranian conflict, with some Republican politicians making it clear that they support the steps that Israel has taken, while others are against the US getting involved in a conflict far from US soil. As 85 trucks of humanitarian aid entered Gaza on Wednesday, Magid discusses the ongoing challenges of aid distribution being handled by the Israeli-US Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. He also talks about the latest offer for hostage negotiations, as Egypt offers to host representatives of Israel and Hamas in Sharm el-Sheikh, which is accessible for the Israeli team, given the closure of Israel's airports during the Iran conflict.
