What comes to your mind when I mention the name “Balch”? For most of us, it's the sordid, nasty tale of Danford Balch, the first Portland resident to be hanged for murder, a fate he earned in 1858 by reacting to his stepdaughter's elopement by chasing the young couple down with a shotgun and murdering his new son-in-law on the Stark Street Ferry (here's a link to the Offbeat Oregon article about that). And yeah, that's one way to make it into the history books! Half a century ago, though, most Oregonians would instantly recognize the Balch name from a more benign, and certainly a more important, historical character, who probably was distantly related to Danford — Frederic H. Balch, the author of what may actually be the most important and influential work of literature in Oregon history: a misty, mythical novel titled The Bridge of the Gods: A Romance of Indian Oregon, published in 1890. In part, the reason Frederic's name is so seldom recognized today is that he died young. The Bridge of the Gods was supposed to be Volume One of a six-part saga telling the story of the Oregon country. But tuberculosis claimed him when he was just 29 years old, leaving the great work unfinished. (Lyle, Washington Territory; 1890s) (For text and pictures, see https://offbeatoregon.com/2501b.frederic-balch-bridge-o-gods-684.512.html)

Once you identify redundant or low-value features, what practical steps do you take to sunset them? How do you communicate this to customers, and what challenges can you expect to face in ensuring a smooth transition? What are the biggest cultural or leadership challenges shifting from a "feature factory" mindset to an outcome-driven approach? This and much more. Discover the profound insights of Dr. Frederic Luskin, renowned psychologist and director of the Stanford Forgiveness Project, as he unpacks the powerful role forgiveness plays in our lives. Alongside him, Episcopal priest Lyndon Harris shares his compelling journey of healing after the 9/11 tragedy, illustrating the transformative power of forgiveness. Together, they share personal narratives and professional insights that highlight forgiveness as a vital skill for mental and emotional well-being. Our conversation dives deep into the complex dynamics between forgiveness and survival. We explore how anger can initially serve as a source of empowerment but often becomes a restrictive force that holds us back. By recognizing forgiveness as a skill that can be taught and honed over time, supported by extensive research, we reveal how it can shift individuals from a victim mindset to a more empowered life story. This episode sheds light on how forgiveness, though not a moral directive, is an essential component of self-care that can be developed to improve our capacity for compassion and authentic living. We're only a few days away from the NHL trade deadline, which meant there was plenty to discuss on the Tuesday episode of Oilersnation Radio. In today's podcast, the guys discussed the Trent Frederic trade, Evander Kane's cap situation, secret no-move clauses, trade deadline plans, and much more.We kicked off the Tuesday episode of ONR with a delicious debate about the Trent Frederic trade that happened early Tuesday morning, and whether the Oilers overpaid for the trade. We also discussed how everyone thinks this move affects the Oilers' trade plans going into the deadline, and if we think it signals some bigger moves from Bowman going forward. No matter how you look at the trade, the Oilers ultimately got one of the more notable rental targets, and that's something we haven't had around here too often over the years. Changing gears, we looked back at Saturday's win over the Carolina Hurricanes and how it was incredibly important for the Oilers to snap their losing streak. From Calvin Pickard shutting the door between the pipes to Corey Perry coming up with another clutch goal to secure the win, it was a gritty victory that the team desperately needed. We also discussed the revelation that Viktor Arvidsson and Adam Henrique both have no-move clauses on their contract, which prompted the ire of Oilers fans given that some of the talk around potentially moving on from some of our struggling forwards. Looking ahead at the trade deadline, we discussed the news from this week that Evander Kane is looking to return before the end of the regular season, which would seriously impact the team's chance of making additional deals. As you'll hear, everyone on the podcast is irritated with that situation because it seems like such an easy plan to keep him out until the playoffs. Finally, we wrapped up the Tuesday episode with some betting talk and another round of Keys to Victory ahead of tonight's matchup between the Oilers and Ducks.
