They also explain why it's important to understand high-risk injection sites and how to achieve natural, balanced results. Plus, they share tips on selecting the right filler, identifying good candidates, and taking a well-rounded approach to cosmetic treatments. Key Takeaways: - Fillers have gained a controversial reputation in recent years. - Proper technique and education are crucial for safe filler application. - Patients often fear fillers due to misconceptions and media portrayals. - Hyaluronic acid fillers are the most common type used. - Fillers can stimulate collagen production over time. - Migration of fillers is often misunderstood by the public. - Choosing a skilled practitioner is essential for desired results. - Certain areas, like the chin and under eyes, require specialized techniques. - Dissolving fillers is possible with hyaluronidase if complications arise. - Awareness of risks, including blindness, is important for patients. Having a healthy fear of filler is crucial for safety. - Complications can occur even with experienced injectors. - High-risk areas for fillers include the temples and nasolabial folds. - Fillers should be used to balance facial features, not just to fill lines. - Hyaluronic acid fillers are recommended for beginners due to their reversibility. - Patients should have reasonable expectations about filler results. - Social downtime is important after filler treatments. - Skin issues may need to be addressed before considering fillers. - A multifactorial approach is essential in cosmetic consultations. - Fillers are just one part of a comprehensive aesthetic treatment plan. This essay by Renaldo McKenzie is a revised version of an originally Submitted paper to Prof. Ori Soltes at Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies on Date: October 25, 2021 as part of a final essay presentation in the Doctor of Liberal Studies Foundations Program. It was published in The Neoliberal Post by The Neoliberal in https://renaldocmckenzie.com in June 2023. The Essay link: https://renaldocmckenzie.com/2023/06/plato/ Abstract: This essay is a reflection on Plato's Phaedo, particularly regarding life, death, and the afterlife. In the Phaedo, one see's Socrates in Plato's eyes, Plato being a student of Socrates who seems infatuated with Socrates. The reflections here raise questions about why people wouldn't choose to end their lives if death brings glory, godliness, and beauty, and suggests that the gods created a system to prevent this through philosophical preparation. The passage also mentions a connection between Christian theology, particularly Calvinist and Armenians views of salvation, and the Socratic-Platonic philosophical foundation. Moreover, what was missing initially when we did this essay was the African influence from the time of Kamit. In this episode, we commented on the influence of Kamit on Plato and Socrates.... In recognition of August as Vaccine Awareness Month, it's essential to cover the topic of vaccines with a well-informed perspective. I, too, wasn't always aware of the full scope of the vaccine discussion. But when you have a credible guest who has meticulously studied vaccine package inserts, analyzed the science, confronted medical boards, debated state governments, and authored insightful books, you know you're in for an enlightening conversation. Our guest is none other than the esteemed Los Angeles pediatrician, Dr. Bob Sears. In this episode, Dr. Sears shares his journey in pediatrics and his commitment to helping parents navigate the complex landscape of holistic health and conventional medicine, with a particular focus on vaccines. We explore key topics from his book, The Vaccine Book, which offers education and guidance on vaccine choices, as well as his latest book, One Doctor versus the Medical Board, where he recounts his personal experience with the medical board and discusses the implications of raising children without vaccines. Before making any assumptions or reacting emotionally, I urge you to listen closely. Dr. Sears discusses vaccine ingredients, the absence of long-term safety studies, the fear surrounding infections, the importance of medical freedom, and the financial incentives doctors receive for maintaining high vaccination rates.  Affectionately known as “Dr. Bob” by his young patients, Dr. Sears earned his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in 1995 and completed his pediatric internship and residency at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. He continues to practice pediatrics in Dana Point, CA, where he integrates alternative and traditional medical care. In this episode, Dr. Evan M. Rabinowitz, the founder of the Yao Shan Center for Chinese Medicine in Washington, DC, joins us for a conversation about acupuncture for menopause symptom treatment relief, the importance of treatment for the individual, how the body is an ecosystem and how holistic & Eastern medicine focus on addressing and balancing the entire system rather than just a single problematic issue.Acupuncture as a medical practice has existed for thousands of years and it used to be the predominant healing practice, yet the Western world still sees it as “alternative medicine.” Eastern medical practice is more than just sticking needles and mixing herbs together. Underneath lies a worldview that all living things are connected and that everything has its own course and cycle. This perspective brings a holistic approach to health and medicine, recognizing that changes in one part of the body or the external environment can cause seemingly unrelated symptoms. Dr. Rabinowitz has been in clinical practice for over 25 years, is a professor at Daoist Traditions College of Chinese Medical Arts in Asheville, NC and a lecturer at Georgetown University School of Medicine's Integrative Medicine Program in Washington, DC. He's the former Director of Chinese Herbal Medicine at the Maryland University of Integrative Health (MUIH), where he helped create the University's Masters and Doctorate programs in East Asian Medicine during his eight-year tenure. He also taught and supervised Chinese herbal medicine at the Academy for Five Element Acupuncture in Gainesville, FL. He is a graduate of the George Washington University (B.A.), Traditional Acupuncture Institute (M.Ac.) and Maryland University of Integrative Health (D.Ac.). Dr. Rabinowitz maintains an active teaching schedule, offering continuing education for practitioners online and in-person across the US and internationally.Dr. Rabinowitz's goal is to see each person as unique and whole, and offer to them individualized, compassionate care for both chronic and acute pain. He has specialty training in gynecology seeing a broad range conditions throughout the lifecycle, including painful or irregular periods, fibroids and cysts (including PCOS), endometriosis and menopause related issues. In this episode, Dr. Rabinowitz discusses:The history and definition of acupunctureEastern medicine's approach to and treatment options for menopauseUnderstanding menopause from a holistic, empowering perspectiveFinding and receiving individualized treatment by a qualified, licensed practitionerDr. Rabinowitz also shares an empowering perspective for women: since puberty, our bodies have been working to sustain and bring new life. With menopause, our body's energies and systems shift to sustain and nourish just our own life. This is an important and significant time for a woman, and there's a unique power that comes with it.Tune in to this enlightening episode to gain a deeper understanding of acupuncture and how Eastern medicine offers a holistic, empowering approach to managing menopause and overall health.Connect with Dr. Evan M. Do you feel really down or unmotivated to work in particular months? This is something millions of people worldwide experience, which is called Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD. We have Dr. Norman Rosenthal on the show today, the person who named this condition. Dr. Norman discusses his decades of research on SAD, how he discovered light therapy as an effective treatment for SAD and more.   In this episode, we talk about: Dr. Norman's book about Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) SAD and its treatment with light therapy Symptoms of SAD, like bad mood and low energy  Ways to maximise the usage of light boxes at home or anywhere to improve mood Importance of getting enough sleep when dealing with SAD An example of how light therapy helped one of his patients feel much better    Memorable Quotes “SAD is one of those conditions that you could easily miss if you're not aware of it. You've got August, September; people are doing well, and then gradually, they begin to lose their functioning. They're slower, they're sleeping more, and they're eating more. And it doesn't just announce itself one day; it's a gentle transition into what can end up being a very disabling condition.” “When I say suffering, you may be slacking off on your job… If you're an actress, you may not generate the kind of buzz needed to galvanise the audience. Whatever it is, you're probably not going to do it well because it takes some kind of interpersonal pizzazz to get people engaged, and it's very hard to muster when you have SAD.”   BIO: Norman E. Tune in for a fascinating conversation about podiatric medicine! Dr. Paul Kim stresses the importance of defining success for oneself and remaining open to adjusting goals as one progresses and changes. He emphasizes the need to be flexible in defining success and to adapt to new circumstances and personal growth. Dr. Kim shares his journey of setting and resetting goals throughout his career, noting how his goals and definition of success have shifted as he moved from residency to different academic centers. Dr. Kim discusses the significance of being realistic in goal-setting and understanding one's limitations. He highlights the role of mentors in helping individuals recognize both strengths and limitations, guiding them toward achievable goals. Dr. Kim and Dr. Richey discuss the concept of work-life balance and propose focusing on work-life alignment or harmony instead. Dr. Kim suggests that the pursuit of a perfect work-life balance is unrealistic and can lead to stress and anxiety. He suggests that the term "work-life balance" can create undue pressure on individuals to evenly distribute their time and energy between work and personal life. Dr. Richey adds to this by emphasizing the importance of defining success and setting goals that align with core values and bring joy to life. She notes that the journey towards success is not linear and that definitions of success may evolve over time.  The conversation between Dr. Kim and Dr. Richey highlights that work-life alignment or harmony may be a more practical and sustainable approach than striving for a perfect balance. By aligning actions with values and priorities at different life stages, individuals can adapt to shifting priorities and maintain flexibility. As a progressive neurodegenerative disease, it not only robs individuals of their cognitive abilities but also places an immense emotional and economic burden on caregivers. Mechanistically, the causes of Alzheimer's are incredibly complex and not fully understood. And in terms of treatment, the landscape appears challenging. Drug discovery efforts for dementias, including Alzheimer's, have faced setbacks, leaving a void in effective treatments. Consequently, attention has shifted toward preventive strategies, including dietary patterns. From a prevention standpoint, both genetics and lifestyle should be considered. Which throws up many interesting questions… To what extent do genetic factors contribute to Alzheimer's risk compared to lifestyle choices, and how does this interaction influence disease development? What role does lifestyle play in Alzheimer's risk, and is there evidence supporting the influence of specific nutrients on cognitive health? How do diet patterns impact Alzheimer's risk? Are there discernible risk differences associated with specific dietary choices, and how do these interact with genetic factors, such as the ApoE genotype? In this episode, Drs. Ayesha Sherzai and Dean Sherzai are on the podcast to answer these questions and discuss this topic in more depth. About The Guests: Dr. Ayesha Sherzai is a neurologist and co-director of the Alzheimer's Prevention Program at Loma Linda University, where she leads the Lifestyle Program for the Prevention of Neurological Diseases. She completed a dual training in Preventative Medicine and Neurology at Loma Linda University, and a fellowship in Vascular Neurology and Epidemiology at Columbia University. She is also a trained plant-based culinary artist. Dr. Dean Sherzai is co-director of the Alzheimer's Prevention Program at Loma Linda University. Dean trained in Neurology at Georgetown University School of Medicine, and completed fellowships in neurodegenerative diseases and dementia at the National Institutes of Health and UC San Diego. He also holds a PhD in Healthcare Leadership with a focus on community health from Andrews University.
