Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. US bureau chief Jacob Magid joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. Hamas has stated that in an “act of good faith,” it will release the final living US-Israeli hostage, Edan Alexander, today as US President Donald Trump begins to make his way to his visit to Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Magid talks about his exclusive look into how the negotiations were carried out. US envoy to the Mideast Steve Witkoff reportedly said during conversations with hostages' families that “Israel is prolonging the war, even though we do not see where further progress can be made.” This harsh statement came as the US made a separate peace agreement with the Iran-backed Houthis and is directly negotiating with Iran for a nuclear deal Israel is not supporting. Is Israel losing the backing of its closest ally? Trump’s meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Riyadh on Tuesday is also set to include Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Syria’s interim leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, Arabic media reported Sunday. Magid weighs in on how likely this meeting is to take place and what Trump is trying to accomplish in his Mideast trip. Iran and the United States wrapped up nuclear talks in Oman on Sunday with no apparent breakthrough in a standoff over uranium enrichment, but with both sides confirming plans for future negotiations. We discuss how Trump's Mideast trip may or may not influence future rounds of talks. Check out The Times of Israel's ongoing liveblog for more updates. Her 2020 co-authored book, "The War of Return," outlines what she believes lies at the core of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict: the Palestinian people's "Right of Return" is what makes this conflict unresolvable.Einat served in Israel's Knesset from 2010 to 2013 and now lectures and writes widely on contemporary issues. A year ago, it felt like Israel was holding its breath. Hezbollah loomed in the north, Hamas continued to entrench itself in Gaza, and Assad's regime in Syria was as ruthless as ever. Iran, the puppet master of this, pulled the strings behind it all, funding and arming its proxies to encircle Israel. Fast forward to today, and the map looks vastly different. Gaza is in ruins, Assad is gone, and Hezbollah has taken a blow. Yet, with every gain comes a new set of challenges. We're still at war on multiple fronts, the Houthis are firing missiles almost daily, and so many Israelis are still held captive in Gaza. In this episode, we're taking a hard look at where we stand. Is Israel any closer to victory? Have we truly restored our deterrence, or is it hanging by a thread? Is there any end in sight to the ongoing front in Gaza? Can we hope for a hostage deal, or will negotiations stretch on indefinitely? What does the defeat of Assad mean for the region, and how is Iran adapting its strategy in response to these shifts? These are the big questions we'll try to tackle today as we assess whether Israel's position has genuinely improved or if we're simply fighting a different version of the same battle. To help us navigate this intricate landscape, we're thrilled to welcome back Dr. Dan Schueftan. A leading authority on Israel's national security and Middle Eastern geopolitics, Dr. Schueftan has been a guest on the podcast many times before. He recently published his new book, The Rise and Fall of the Pan Arab Struggle against Israel, in Hebrew - soon to be out in English. With his keen insights and no-nonsense analysis, he's the perfect person to help us break it all down. Let's get into it.

Whatever your position is on Israel, on Zionism, on Hamas' attacks on October 7, 2023 or Netanyahu's prosecution of the war in Gaza, it's undeniable that Israel had an outsized influence on our recent presidential election. And it's ironic that our greatest ally in the Middle East, that tiny state described as the only functioning democracy in the region, may well have been a major contributor to the undoing of American democracy. How did the promise of Israel become the problem of Israel? Unreasonable executive producer and this episode's guest host, Bennett Windheim, spoke with political economist, educator and author Bernard Avishai and asked: Is Israel a theocracy, and are there cautionary lessons for America to learn?Avishai is the Visiting Professor of Government at Dartmouth and former adjunct Professor of Business at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He and his think tank propelled the Knesset's 2018 Nation-State Law and the push for judicial reform. Also a professor emeritus of computer science at Bar-Ilan University, Moshe is the founding director of Dicta, a research institute devoted to developing tools for computational analysis of Hebrew texts, and the author of three books on Jewish thought. Now, he joins us to answer 18 questions on Israel, including religion & state, the war in Gaza, and Israel's greatest threats. This interview was held on Nov. 27.Here are our 18 questions:As an Israeli, and as a Jew, how are you feeling at this moment in Israeli history? What has been Israel's greatest success and greatest mistake in its war against Hamas? How do you think Hamas views the outcome and aftermath of October 7—was it a success, in their eyes? What do you look for in deciding which Knesset party to vote for?Which is more important for Israel: Judaism or democracy?Should Israel treat its Jewish and non-Jewish citizens the same? What role should the Israeli government have in religious matters? Now that Israel already exists, what is the purpose of Zionism? Is opposing Zionism inherently antisemitic? Is the IDF the world's most moral army?If you were making the case for Israel, where would you begin? Can questioning the actions of Israel's government and army — even in the context of this war — be a valid form of love and patriotism? What do you think is the most legitimate criticism leveled against Israel today?Do you think peace between Israelis and Palestinians will happen within your lifetime? What should happen with Gaza and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict after the war?Is Israel properly handling the Iranian threat?Where do you identify on Israel's political and religious spectrum, and do you have friends on the “other side”?Do you have more hope or fear for Israel and the Jewish People.

The true enemy in Israel's current war, Einat Wilf says, is what she calls "Palestinianism."Once part of the Israeli left, Einat Wilf is a popular political thinker on Israel, Zionism, and foreign policy. She is the author of seven books and hosts the "We Should All Be Zionists" podcast. She has a BA from Harvard, an MBA from INSEAD in France, and a PhD in Political Science from the University of Cambridge. 2024-10-11 | This news is a week old, but more details are coming out, so it's worth taking a deeper dive into the Israel strike near the Russian air base in Syria. The full impact of this has also not been appreciated, I feel, I certain sections of the media, so let's jump into this story. ---------- Is Israel at war with Russia? Well, frustratingly this is a no, yes answer to the question. Is it formally at war? No. Does the attack on Russian munitions being delivered to Iran constitute a declaration of war? No. Will Russia see it as such? Again no. But this is not a war like WWII or the Cold War. It's a war without rules, where acts of aggression, terror and provocation are carried out without restraint and without rules. Russia is arming and conspiring with Israel's enemies, of that there is no doubt. Russia is providing deadly aid; in the full knowledge it will be used by the proxies of it's allies Iran to seek to slaughter Israeli civilians. Russia indeed has close ties with these proxy forces sowing death, terror, and chaos in the region, and Russia is fully cognisant of their strategies and techniques. Russia has probably assisted them in training as well as the provision of the materials of death. So yes, this really is a kind of war, and Russia is a full and willing participant in it. The grey zone war of sabotage, illegality, cyber and informational attacks, and the warm war of assassination and provocation. WWIII may not resemble ‘hot' wars of the past, but may play out in this warm, grey zone of perpetual aggression, subversion of international institutions and attacks in the informational space. ---------- Sources and recommended reading: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/10/03/israeli-strike-suspected-near-russian-air-base-in-syria-whi/?ICID=continue_without_subscribing_reg_first https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/04/world/middleeast/israel-strikes-russian-airbase-syria.html https://english.enabbaladi.net/archives/2024/10/israeli-strikes-approach-russias-interests-in-syria/ https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/1956833/israel-attacks-russian-khmeimim-airbase-syria https://cepa.org/article/israels-decapitation-strikes-leave-russia-trembling/ ---------- SUPPORT THE CHANNEL: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain https://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain ---------- TRUSTED CHARITIES ON THE GROUND: Save Ukraine https://www.saveukraineua.org/ Superhumans - Hospital for war traumas https://superhumans.com/en/ UNBROKEN - Treatment. It has been 1 year since the October 7th Massacre. The conversation surrounding Israel and the war in Gaza continues to be controversial. Is Israel committing genocide against the Palestinians, is Zionism another form of terrorism?

A few weeks ago, there was an awesome event in Brooklyn in partnership with UnHerd called Dissident Dialogues. It was exactly what it sounds like: debates and discussions on the most pressing questions facing our society today. Questions like: Have we reached peak woke? Can universities be saved? Can liberalism be saved? Is government censorship justified? Is this the end of mainstream media? and What is the future of feminism? So basically, just the light stuff. But probably the most contentious debate of the weekend was: Is Israel's war on Hamas a just war? This is not an easy debate. Emotions run hot, the stakes are high, people's morality is called into question, and there are a lot of competing narratives. Which is all the more reason to debate the topic in public, something we always advocate for at The Free Press. Arguing no, that Israel's war on Hamas is not a just war, are Briahna Joy Gray and Jake Klein. Briahna was the national press secretary for Bernie Sanders' 2020 campaign, and is host of the Bad Faith podcast. Arguing alongside Briahna is Jake Klein. Jake is a content creator for the Foundation for Economic Education, and he is a co-founder and editor at The Black Sheep. Arguing yes, that Israel's war on Hamas is a just war, are two of our very own Free Pressers, Eli Lake and Michael Moynihan. Eli is a columnist at The Free Press and a longtime journalist covering foreign affairs and national security. And Michael Moynihan, who you've heard guest-host Honestly, is a veteran journalist, having spent years at Vice, The Daily Beast, and Reason magazine. He is also a host of The Fifth Column podcast. The debate is moderated by the one and only Russian British satirist, co-host of the Triggernometry podcast, and Free Press contributor, Konstantin Kisin. Learn more about your ad choices.
