Send us Fan MailWhat's actually better—experience or naivety? Most people think experience is the ultimate advantage. But the longer I sat with it, the more I realized experience can also make you rigid, judgmental, and closed off to new possibilities. At the same time, naivety—when used correctly—isn't weakness. It's openness. It's curiosity. It's creativity. In this episode, I break down why some of the biggest breakthroughs in life, sales, business, and creativity happen because people were naive enough to try before they knew they “couldn't.” I also share why James Dyson (Against The Odds, phenomenal book by the way) prefers hiring inexperienced people because they think differently and aren't trapped by assumptions. This episode is about learning how to lead with naivety while backing it with experience. Staying open without becoming reckless. Staying experienced without becoming hardened. Because if you only live from what you already know, you'll miss everything you still could become.Support the show

While the podcast team is taking a Radical Sabbatical, Kim is interviewing authors of the books that have had a big impact on her in the past two years. In this episode she's speaking with Eric Ries about his new book, Incorruptible, Why Good Companies Go Bad... and How Great Companies Stay Great.   All too often, founders start a company and hire an incredible team dedicated to building a company that will solve an important problem and leave the world better off.  Then they get a taste of success and life is good.  But all too often, the bankers and lawyers swoop in and the demands to “maximize shareholder value” set in.  More often than not, the company succumbs to the gravitational pull of mediocrity–or worse.  Compromises are made, rationalizations abound, and after a while people start to wonder “how did this happen?!”   Eric has thought deeply about how to structure companies so that they can remain true to their purpose and achieve great financial results.  In his interview with Kim, he shares his extensive research on companies, both contemporary and some many decades old, who have been able to make this work.   Background on Eric Ries: Over the last two decades, Eric Ries's ideas about continuous innovation, long-term thinking, governance, and market reform have reshaped company building and management practices. He is the creator of the Lean Startup method and the author of the New York Times bestseller The Lean Startup, The Leader's Guide, and The Startup Way. As a founder, Eric has put his own ideas into practice with the Long-Term Stock Exchange (LTSE); Answer.AI, an AI R&D lab; Virgil, a legal services startup; and IMVU. On The Eric Ries Show, he talks with world-class technologists, thought leaders, and executives building for the long-term. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife and three children.  His new book, Incorruptible, will be released in May of 2026.   CHAPTERS (00:00) Introduction to Eric Ries and His Work (01:31) The Motivation Behind 'Incorruptible' (04:28) The Dark Side of Business Practices (05:08) The Haunting Story of Vectura and Philip Morris (12:58) The Consequences of Corporate Governance (15:20) The Historical Context of Corporate Purpose (18:37) The Evolution of Corporate Purpose (22:07) The Impact of Purpose-Driven Companies (25:33) Understanding Financial Gravity (30:55) The Unconscious Forces in Corporations (34:43) Resisting the Pull of Mediocrity (39:14) Navigating Power Dynamics in Organizations (40:04) The Naivety of Value Creation (41:05) The Dilemma of Founder Control (42:34) Building Institutional Protections (43:36) Costco's Governance Fortress (45:57) The Cost of Governance Ratings (47:58) The Challenge of Public Companies (51:08) Taking Action for Ethical Leadership Connect with the Radical Candor team: Website LinkedIn YouTube Learn more about your ad choices. The armor kept us safe in the seasons we needed it. But armor doesn't distinguish between threat and love. And it's been keeping the people closest to us at a distance we never intended. Most of us didn't lose trust in others all at once. It happened in accumulation — the relationships that didn't hold, the vulnerability that got used against us, the closeness we allowed that left us more exposed than we intended. And somewhere in the aftermath, we made a quiet decision. We put on armor. We didn't call it armor. We called it wisdom. Healthy boundaries. Discernment about who earns access. And some of that was genuinely right. But here's what armor doesn't know how to do: distinguish. It keeps the people who would harm us at a distance. And it keeps the people who love us at exactly the same distance. This is the Reinforcement stage of Week 14 — and today the week's work lands in the hardest place: relationship. Because trust doesn't stay interior. It shows up in whether we're present or managed. In whether the people closest to us can reach us — or whether they're pressing against armor they can feel but simply cannot name. There's an important difference between discernment and armor. Discernment is about who earns access. Armor is about denying access to everyone — including the people who've already earned it.We get to keep our discernment. We get to be thoughtful about who receives the real version of us. But when the armor stays on with people who've proven they're trustworthy — when they're getting the managed version instead of the real one — that isn't wisdom anymore. That's the protection that has outlived its purpose. And the cost isn't just ours. It belongs to every person on the other side who has been trying to love us and keeps finding the managed version instead. Is this episode for us?We show up to relationship but aren't quite reachableThe people closest to us are getting the capable version, not the real oneArmor and discernment have started to look the same from the insideToday's Recalibration:Think of the person who has most consistently shown up for us. Even in his role as Member of the Executive Board at the IMF, his name remains relevant in the Netherlands. Most hosting companies don't start because someone dreams of running servers. They start because something is broken and users are frustrated. That's exactly how Terry Kyle built WPX. In this episode, Terry joins us to discuss how he built WPX from a single server into a globally distributed hosting company with 100+ staff, thousands of loyal customers, and a reputation built on speed and hands-on support.  We also dive into Terry's approach to modern SEO. While many entrepreneurs spend thousands of dollars buying courses and attending events, very few actually implement what they've learned. His advice is to start small, take action quickly, and build momentum through repetition rather than overthinking. He also highlights emerging opportunities, particularly in non-English SEO markets, where competition is lower, and the upside remains significant. While WPX gave Terry profit, he found purpose in his charity work after founding Every Dog Matters. Terry has built a large-scale dog rescue operation that now cares for hundreds of dogs daily. And while building a business was challenging, he describes the charity as far more difficult, both operationally and emotionally. This episode shows that success isn't just about building a profitable company. It's about what you choose to do with the resources, skills, and leverage you've built along the way. AJ, founder and CEO of Daylight — an award-winning, Mac-exclusive CRM — joins Jeff Mains to share one of the most quietly remarkable stories in SaaS: a decades-long journey from refugee to bootstrapped CEO.AJ traces his path from arriving in Canada with nothing, to bartering his labor for computer access, to navigating the dot-com crash, multiple pivots, and a delicate transition from on-premise software to the cloud — all without outside funding. At the heart of his story is a deceptively simple framework: build strong systems, hire good people, and stay close to profitability. This episode is a masterclass in endurance, disciplined reinvention, and what it really means to build a company that outlasts technological waves and market cycles.Key Takeaways6:42 Adversity doesn't kill you — AJ's foundational lesson from arriving in Canada as a refugee: there is always a way out. That mindset became his default response to every business challenge.7:36 Self-reliance as a survival skill — Indoctrinated early by family: don't count on anyone else. Combine curiosity with self-reliance and you'll find the knowledge you need.12:27 Bartering for access — AJ traded free labor — sweeping floors, running errands — for equal computer time to teach himself to code. Grit over credentials.14:38 Naivety as a founder asset — Market Circle was founded after watching eBay and asking "how hard could that be?" Sometimes naive conviction is the fuel that gets you started.16:18 Timing killed the idea, not the idea itself — The dot-com bubble burst derailed AJ's first venture mid-fundraise. The idea was validated; the timing was wrong. Lesson: markets don't care about your timeline.19:36 Apple community validation — People inside Apple told AJ to stop using the CRM as a portfolio piece and sell it. External market signals matter — listen when the right voices say "people want this."27:08 The gradual pivot saved the business — A VC in San Francisco warned AJ about the "road of carcasses" of companies that ripped the band-aid on on-premise-to-cloud transitions. AJ changed strategy to a gradual 3-year migration and survived where others failed.28:54 Let customers get comfortable with change — The gradual approach gave customers time to adjust, and gave the team time to fix infrastructure, scaling, and reliability issues before fully committing.34:03 Bootstrapped discipline — Without outside capital, the rule is simple: stay close to the profitability line and reinvest constantly. Running a small deficit is only acceptable if you can make it up quickly.40:43 Jobs to be done never change, tools do — Building relationships is a timeless job. The Rolodex became the CRM. AI will change the tools again. Anchor your product to the job, not the method.44:30 Hire people who find solutions — Good people aren't just smart — they're open-minded, willing to work, and always looking for new ways forward.45:22 Take vacations to test your systems — If the business collapses when you're gone for three days, you don't have a business — you have a job. Use time off to expose what's not yet built to run without you.Tweetable Quotes"Adversity doesn't kill you. As long as you take it in stride, whenever you run into adversity there is always a way out — you just start thinking, what's the way out?" — AJ"Don't count on anybody else. You count on yourself. That means you always have to prepare for you doing the work — and to do the work, you've got to go get the knowledge." — AJ"I'll work for free if you give me equal time on a computer. I'll sweep the floor, run errands, do whatever — just give me equal time." — AJ"There's no divine inspiration. You wanna do something, just do it." — AJ, on starting Market Circle"Had we not done the gradual approach, we would have killed the business." — AJ, on the on-premise to cloud migration"Help customers become comfortable with the change somehow. Whenever people are involved, things have to be carefully managed." — AJ"You wanna test that the business can run without you — because if it can't, you just have a job." — AJ"The job to be done — building relationships — doesn't change. The Rolodex became a CRM, and AI will change the tools again, but the job remains." — AJSaaS Leadership Lessons1. Adversity is a training ground, not a stop sign. AJ's early life as a refugee didn't break him — it gave him the mental framework that every business obstacle has a way out. That mindset compounds over time. Founders who've faced real hardship often have a quiet durability that's hard to replicate.2. Curiosity + self-reliance is a compounding advantage. AJ didn't have resources, mentors, or credentials. He had a burning need to know why things worked, and the conviction that no one else was coming to save him. Those two traits drove him to bookstores he couldn't afford, to companies that rejected him, and eventually to building a product customers love.3. Gradual > dramatic when navigating major transitions. The on-premise to cloud migration is a case study every SaaS founder should memorize. The "hard cutover" approach — common, intuitive, and fast — kills companies. The slow approach feels inefficient but it gives you the runway to fix your mistakes before they cost you everything.4. Bootstrapped? Stay close to the line and keep reinvesting. Without VC money as a buffer, the game is different. AJ's rule: stay profitable (even by a dollar), and put every spare dollar back into the product. This isn't about being conservative — it's about staying alive long enough to adapt.5. Anchor your product to the timeless job, not the current tool. "Build relationships" was the job 60 years ago and it will still be the job in 50 years. The tools evolve — Rolodex → CRM → AI-assisted CRM. If you stay anchored to the job your customers need done, you'll always have a reason to exist. If you anchor to your current feature set, you'll be disrupted.6. Build a business, not a job — test it with a vacation. AJ recommends every founder take a deliberate vacation specifically to stress-test the organization. Two to three days first. Then longer. If it falls apart, you've just identified your most important engineering project. The goal isn't the beach — it's proving the system runs without you.Guest Resourcesaj@marketcircle.comhttps://www.daylite.app/https://www.linkedin.com/in/alykhanjetha/Episode SponsorThe Futureproof Series - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfkXKUPZ5xuOqMPR7_gzGybncTtavyR1NThe Captain's KeysSmall Fish, Big Pond – https://smallfishbigpond.com/ Use the promo code ‘SaaSFuel'Champion Leadership Group – https://championleadership.com/SaaS Fuel ResourcesWebsite - https://championleadership.com/Jeff Mains on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffkmains/Twitter - https://twitter.com/jeffkmainsFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/thesaasguy/Instagram - https://instagram.com/jeffkmains

This week on The Best of B Team, we're throwing it back to our episode with Jeff, owner and founder of Bike Rack Brewing Co.Imagine the sun on your shoulders, a cold pint in hand, and a reason to show up, this conversation lives where small batches meet big community energy. We crack open a limited summer release designed for poolside afternoons and talk about why keeping it scarce pushes people off the couch and out to the farm to taste it fresh. From the first sip, the strategy is clear: let the beer be a moment, not just a product, and pair it with simple, smart marketing that moves people to gather. We share how a decade in craft beer turned our taproom into a home for local artists, funding albums, pressing vinyl, and turning Friday nights into rehearsal halls for a 90s cover band. Partnerships aren't a slogan for us; they're a map. When your front door lines up with a neighbor's venue, you dream up VIP-only drops and collaborations that feel earned and close to the ground. That same “build with what's near” mindset led us to a tight, fast food menu: wings done right and a giant pretzel that keeps tables happy without stealing space from tanks in a production brewery. There's also the truth about the leap. Home brew praise is kind, but scaling demands process, fermentation control, and a willingness to rewrite plans that once felt perfect. We talk through the gap between optimism and execution, the risk of leaving safe jobs, and the grit it takes to keep learning. On the board, a balanced lineup leads the way: a West Coast IPA named after local trails, hazies for modern palates, and approachable ABVs that invite another round. Along the way, you'll hear the laughter, the near-misses, and the simple rules we live by: make beers that fit your place, keep the menu sharp, and let community be the headline. If this story of small-batch creativity and hometown loyalty hits home, you need to see the full episode! Patrick explains how economic tools — trade policy, supply chains, data, technology, energy, and capital — are increasingly being weaponized by powerful states, marking a decisive break from the post-war rules-based system Canada built its prosperity on. Together, they explore why Canada's deep dependence on the United States has shifted from advantage to vulnerability, what U.S. national security strategy means for Canadian firms, and why tariffs alone won't protect sovereignty. This is not anti-American — it's pro-Canadian realism. A serious conversation about industrial strategy, infrastructure, and what it will take for Canada to protect its interests in an era where economic power is geopolitical power.

For 10 years, Belkins' founders never sat down on camera to talk honestly about what building this company has really cost them.Michael Maximoff and Vlad Podoliako have spent a decade building together. They took Belkins from zero to one of the world's leading B2B lead generation agencies, built Folderly, and managed a portfolio of joint investments. On paper, the story looks perfect. But a portfolio of companies doesn't show what it feels like to live through it.To close out one of the hardest years they've ever had, Michael and Vlad finally sit down — in person — to break the silence. This special episode isn't about “how we scaled an agency.” It's about what happens to two people when they spend a decade in hardcore mode: carrying a 300-person team, making painful decisions, holding impossible targets, and trying not to lose themselves (or each other) in the process. They talk about optimism turning into realism, when caring too much starts holding the company back, and why 2025 felt like a loss even with “good numbers.”If you've ever felt the weight of responsibility as a founder, co-founder, agency owner, or someone building ambitious things inside a B2B company, this conversation will hit home.In this episode, we unpack:

Passenger started as a simple lifestyle idea yet grew into a purpose led brand with a loyal community and a clear mission. This episode breaks down how it happened and what founders can learn from the journey.Speaking with Richard Sutcliffe reminded me how often founders overlook the power of building something with clear intent. Passenger began as a small lifestyle project shaped by surf trips, long drives and a need for breathing space. It grew because the purpose was honest and the community saw themselves in the story. Ritchard talked openly about the pressure of personal challenges, the role of naivety, the importance of ego control and the reality that a brand must outgrow the founder to survive. This episode is a useful listen for anyone who wants to build something that lasts and still feels grounded in real purpose.Guest: Richard Sutcliffe, Founder of PassengerKey Takeaways:Purpose creates clarity when the business hits difficult stages.Community forms when the brand story is honest and consistent.Naivety can be an advantage when it removes assumptions.Founders must step back if they want the brand to scale.

Ray Barbee is an American skateboarder, musician, and photographer originally from San Jose, California. He started skateboarding in 1984, when he was in seventh grade, and has grown to become one of the most iconic skateboarders of his generation. His passion and do-it-yourself attitude, which distinguish him as a musician and as a skateboarder, also define his photography. He has been developing his own photos for the last sixteen years. Rarely without his Leica M6, Ray brings the same unique perspective to the art of black and white film photography that he has brought to skateboarding. His pictures manage to capture both the loud and soft sounds of life. They document explorations, discoveries and experiences, while casually speaking of his own life at the same time. Ray's seamless approach to capturing a moment while nurturing the image through the development process and bringing it to fruition in the darkroom make his photographs as humble and honest as the man behind the lens. Moses Williams is an 18-year-old Social/Self-Pres 5w6 who is also on the autism spectrum. Moses describes growing up feeling that adults were hiding the truth, that essential information was missing, and that everyone else somehow knew how to be human in a way he didn't. We talk about his often obsessive fascination with taboo topics—pornography, sexual deviance, violence—not to provoke, but to answer the horrifying question: “Am I stupid for not knowing this already?” He recounts a personal collapse that left him with three options: become a sanitized version of himself, disappear entirely, or dismantle and reform collective assumptions entirely. This conversation also explores intellectual separatism, the pressure to adapt to norms that feel senseless, and the slow, reluctant emergence of a heart that wants something real. Kim (SO/SP 8w7 863) joins us for an intimate and unguarded exploration of the inner world of Eight — where sovereignty is survival, connection is a gamble, and straight talk is an act of love. From the first moments, Kim's presence is unmistakable: a force of nature, all-in from the outset, inviting others to meet her at full throttle. We explore the emotional paradox at the heart of the Social Eight — the innocent hope that others will meet her with the same raw honesty she offers, the crushing self-blame that follows when that trust proves misplaced, and the instinct to amputate not just relationships but parts of her own soul in self-protection. We delve into the Eight's preemptive numbing, the hardened stance of being the gatekeeper of her world, and the quiet grief of being valued only for what she gives — not for who she is. Kim's story is a vivid portrait of Eight's vulnerability beneath the armor, and of the slow, courageous return to wholeness. The life of Michael Parenti is truly extraordinary, as he witnessed two significant cultural movements that changed the word. Growing up in Malibu, he went to school with the likes of Sean Penn and Charlie Sheen, met a young Madonna before she was an international star, hung out in Bob Dylan's house, and saw live acts like Nirvana and Red Hot Chilli Peppers long before MTV made them famous. As an internet entrepreneur, he became involved with the Bitcoin Foundation and also saw the early days of Ethereum. He attended hundreds of events, spoke with some of the people who are completely unapproachable today, and found himself in the middle of something magical, naive, and revolutionary. In this episode, we talk about the backstage politics that Michael Parenti witnessed and what it was like to believe in the cyhpherpunk dream more than a decade ago. The world is hurting right now. We're all affected no matter how removed from the pain we might seem as individuals, whether it's the fires in LA, the wars in Europe and the Middle East, or the general conflicts of ideology.  It might seem like we're on the precipice of destruction, but this is nothing new. Times have never been ‘normal.'  It's so easy to say, why bother? It's a fair question. Why continue striving to be better? Why pursue your art, personal betterment, or whatever lights you up inside when we don't know if we'll be here tomorrow? Is it naïve? Foolish?  Rather, the opposite. Naivety is to believe the world is bereft of pain. To be wise is to understand that the world is cruel, yet to harbor faith that things can always get better, that life, regardless of what's happening around us, is worth living.  We must fight for the world we want to live in. Pursuing what lights us up inside, whatever brings us any semblance of joy, is to fight back and not let the darkness win. We are all artists, and the world needs what we have. We must be the light in the world, as it's times like these where we need art, creativity, color, love — the most. We can't give up, ever.  For more Dare to Dream content find us on: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-dare-to-dream-podcast/id1522983890 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/599zlweDDcmXP5YhOX6TFw YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoimyPFCjO_qrJhH4ALafcA Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thedaretodreampodcast/ Vincent's Book, When the Sky Opens and the Answers Shimmer: https://www.amazon.com/When-Sky-Opens-Answers-Shimmer/dp/B0DSQ7MYRZ?ref_=ast_author_dp Join Vincent's Newsletter - Citoyens du Monde: https://vincentvanpatten.ck.page/ For Vincent's writing from Japan, travel photography, and more, check out: https://vincentvanpatten.com/ Join Gregory's Newsletter - Live a Story Worth Telling: https://liveastoryworthtelling.gregoryrussellbenedikt.com/laswt If you're feeling empty despite your “success”, book a discovery call with Gregory: https://calendly.com/gregoryrussellbenedikt-1/discovery-call
