Sen. Bernie Sanders forced a vote on Wednesday to block the sales of bombs and bulldozers to Israel. The resolutions failed mostly along party lines with a handful of defections to the Republican side, but a record number of Democrats voted against sending weapons to Israel. “A supermajority of Democrats oppose this war, are generally against America's global military interventions,” former Sanders foreign policy adviser Matt Duss tells The Intercept Briefing. Yet Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., joined 11 Democrats in voting against the measure to block the sale of 1,000-pound bombs to Israel, and seven Democrats against the sale of bulldozers used in Israel's military occupations.“We do have a Democratic Party leadership that still is part of this very small — and thankfully dwindling, though not fast enough — hawkish faction that is wedded to this idea of American global military domination,” says Duss. This week on the podcast, Duss speaks to host Akela Lacy about how Democrats should use the overwhelming unpopularity of the war to push an anti-war agenda that brings about real change. “There's a real constituency here for this message,” says Duss, “We need a foreign policy for this era that is based around building peace rather than making war, that is focused on foreign policy that benefits American communities and American workers, but also does not export insecurity and poverty onto others in the world. And I think this is a really opportune moment.”The watershed moment in the Senate came against the backdrop of President Donald Trump's hyper-aggressive military adventurism.“My concern about blaming this all on Israel is that it lets Washington off the hook,” says Duss. “We have a foreign policy establishment that is addicted to militarism, that is addicted to war, who work at think tanks that are largely funded by the military–industrial complex. They are funded by weapons manufacturers. We have a political class that is really deeply committed to an almost religious degree to American primacy in the world, to American global hegemony. Which means that we are up in everyone's business all over the place all the time.”“This Iran war is the most egregious and horrible expression of trends in our foreign policy that have been building for a long time, so are these boat strikes,” he says, referring to the Trump administration's ongoing assassinations of alleged drug traffickers. “We've been killing people with flying robots in the Middle East and Africa and elsewhere for decades now.”Listen to the full conversation of The Intercept Briefing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you listen.Keep our investigations free and fearless at theintercept.com/join. On February 28, both the United States and Israel attacked Iran, killing Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the nation's Supreme Leader, along with other political leaders and government officials, destroying various military targets, and bombing a girls elementary school that took at least 175 lives, many of them children. Just under a week into the war, where are we? Why did Trump decide to attack Iran now? What reasons did they give, and were any of them plausible? What have the consequences been so far? And what can Democrats do to fight back? To answer these questions, we had on Matt Duss, executive vice president of the Center for International Policy and a former foreign policy adviser to Bernie Sanders. Writing in Foreign Policy, Matt Duss argues that Donald Trump's rush to war is bothstupid and illegal. It is also wildly unpopular with the public. But he also observes thatcongress has been reluctant to challenge Trump's policy, although some progressiveshave now forced the issue to a vote. It's Casual Friday at the Majority Report On today's program: JD Vance holds a news conference in Minneapolis where he is asked about a leaked DHS memo instructing ICE and CBP agents that an "administrative warrant" is sufficient for forcibly entering people's homes. In response, Vance lies and obfuscates the legality of these unconstitutional directives outlined in the leaked memo. Co-host of the Un-Diplomatic Pod, Matt Duss joins the program to wrap up the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. In the Fun Half: Elon Musk fails miserably in an attempt to steal an old Mel Brooks joke, but that doesn't stop him from laughing hysterically at his own butchered bit. Harry Enten presents new polling showing Democrats are now expected to gain a House seat, a sharp reversal from last summer when projections had Republicans picking up five. Brian Eno dresses down a painfully British chat show host, Lord Bethel, for referring to CEOs as "wealth creators," reminding him that it's workers who actually generate the wealth. AOC calls out the CVS Health chair over the company's market concentration during a congressional hearing. At least 100 faith leaders are arrested while participating in a General Strike action at the Minneapolis–St. Paul airport. In Maine, the Cumberland County sheriff expresses outrage over ICE's unprofessional conduct in the state. This week's episode is a live recording of Wisdom of Crowds, where we celebrated a very special occasion: the publication of Shadi Hamid's new book, The Case for American Power. The book is a soul-searching study about American power as a force for good in the world, and it combines memoir and foreign policy analysis. Shadi's thesis is that if we want to make the world “more just and more moral, more democratic and more respectful of human rights,” then backing the United States is both the “last best hope and the least-bad option.”Joining Shadi Hamid and Damir Marusic is special guest Matt Duss, former foreign policy advisor to Bernie Sanders, executive vice president of the Center for International Policy, and co-host of the Undiplomatic Podcast. “I am certainly not against the idea of American power,” says Matt. But his question is: “Which America?” Duss is less optimistic that US power can be put to good use because, he says, we are currently having a national debate about “what is the nature of the American project.” It's unclear how that debate will end.Nevertheless, Shadi argues, American democracy, however imperfect, is still superior to the regimes in the other global hegemons, Russia and China. We should not fear our own home — oikophobia is a real issue, Shadi says, using the term for “fear of one's home,” the opposite of xenophobia. Duss partially agrees, but says that being a democracy does not necessarily imbue American foreign policy with moral authority. “International law does that.” The topic of international law prompts Damir to steer the conversation towards the topic of Gaza. Does American collaboration with Israeli war crimes disprove Shadi's thesis? Or does it paradoxically strengthen the argument that the world needs morally-guided American power? At this point, Shadi utters one of the best lines of the night: “To be seen as hypocritical is the cost of trying to being better than you actually are.”We are making this episode completely free for all subscribers, including the Q and A section, which covers topics like: hypocrisy in foreign policy; why working with China is preferable to the US for some nations; how Gaza will change the Democratic Party; the crisis in the MAGA coalition; and more! Required Reading and Listening:* Shadi Hamid, The Case for American Power (Amazon).* Shadi, “A Genocide is Happening in Gaza. We Should Say So” (Washington Post).* Shadi, “Everyone says the Libya intervention was a failure. They're wrong.” (Vox). * Our 2024 podcast with Matt Duss (WoC). * Rod Dreher, “What I Saw and Heard in Washington” (Substack). * Roger Scruton, “Oikophobia” (Journal of Education). A ceasefire is holding in Gaza. Aid is beginning to flow. The remaining Israeli hostages have been released, as have nearly 2,000 Palestinians from Israeli detention. This has been a truly remarkable day in the Middle East. But can this positive momentum be sustained? I recorded this conversation with Matt Duss of the Center for International Policy just moments after Donald Trump met with an impressive array of world leaders in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, in a ceremony designed to cement his personal investment in this peace plan. We kick off by discussing the significance of the spectacle and ceremony in Sharm el-Sheikh, then have a longer conversation about how the ceasefire came together and the many pitfalls that remain. This ceasefire is fragile. Hamas is reconstituting. And the Israeli government remains opposed to a viable Palestinian State. But this is nonetheless a significant inflection point after two years of brutal war.
In this episode of Occupied Thoughts, FMEP Fellow Ahmed Moor speaks with Matt Duss, Executive Vice-President at the Center for International Policy and former foreign policy advisor to Senator Bernie Sanders. They discuss the Israeli genocide in Gaza and the new ceasefire; changes in public assessments of Israel's standing in the U.S. and political relationships with Israel, including changing relationships with Israel among prominent Trump supporters as well as Bernie Sanders's late recognition of genocide; and what accountability looks like for the genocide, including for members of the Biden administration. Matthew Duss is Executive Vice-President at the Center for International Policy. For over 50 years, Bob Woodward has had an uncanny ability to get sources talking—and to sell books. From Watergate to Trump, no political era has gone by without at least one Woodward tome promising to peel back the curtain on how Washington really works. Now, Woodward is out with his latest, the bluntly titled “War.” It's billed as a look at the end of the Joe Biden presidency and beginning of the second Trump era. But what it really shows is what happens when a reporter evolves from a muckraker into a reputation-launderer for the establishment.Joining us on the podcast today is Matt Duss, executive vice president of the Center for International Policy and former foreign policy adviser to Bernie Sanders. Duss's review of War is in the October books issue of the Nation. Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

In this episode of Occupied Thoughts, former FMEP President Matt Duss speaks with professor & author Brian Barber, who recently published No Way But Forward: Life Stories of Three Families in the Gaza Strip. The book tells the stories of day-t0-day life under decades of military occupation, building on the close relationships Brian built there through many years of academic research. Brian maintains close contact with the families and finishes the book with a section on each family's harrowing efforts to survive the current genocide in Gaza. Brian and Matt discuss the book -- how Brian came to write it, the contents of it, and the challenge of publishing it -- as well as Brian's experience of encountering Palestinian communities, overcoming unconscious biases, and withstanding direct challenges to the legitimacy of Palestinian voices in order to fulfill a promise and share Palestinian stories. Brian K. Barber is Professor Emeritus, University of Tennessee and the author of No Way But Forward: Life Stories of Three Families in the Gaza Strip. He currently lives in Washington, DC. His work has addressed how context—from parenting to political systems—impact individual and social development. Among other books, he is editor of Intrusive Parenting: How Psychological Control Affects Children and Adolescents (2002, American Psychological Association), and Adolescents and War: How Youth Deal with Political Conflict (2008, Oxford University Press). It's Monday, and allegedly a fun day. First, Tulsi Gabbard tries to worm her way back into Trump's good graces with a fresh Obama conspiracy theory, while Trump shares an AI-generated video of Obama being “arrested” by FBI agents. In an especially desperate attempt to shift attention away from Epstein headlines, Trump threatens to block a deal for the Washington Commanders' new stadium—unless they bring back the team's old name. Then we're joined by journalist Matt Duss to discuss his new piece in Foreign Policy, “The Biden Administration Lied About Gaza. It's Time to Hold Them Accountable.” Later, Candace Rondeaux, author of Putin's Sledgehammer, joins us to break down Russia's war in Ukraine and the Wagner Group's role in meddling in U.S. elections. In the Fun Half we watch Mehdi Hasan debate 20 far-right panelists in Jubilee's Surrounded series. Andrew Cuomo left his home in Westchester Country to visit Long Island to raise money for his New York City mayoral race and someone was kind enough to secretly record his speech. Turns out it was voter turnout that caused his defeat by 12 points. Fox News does some "embedded journalism" by sending a reporter to Central Florida for a puff piece that covers "consensual interactions" like finger printing workers for a national immigrant data base. We just talked live with Matthew Duss, the foreign policy scholar and former Bernie Sanders advisor. He gave a powerful whirlwind explanation of the recent U.S. war with Iran (remember it?), and we discussed everything from the 14 million deaths the U.S.A.I.D. cuts will reportedly cause, to the effects of the war in Gaza on trust in Democrats, to the new budget bill's supercharging of ICE, to whether foreign allies will stand with the American people against anti-democratic American leaders. Most importantly, perhaps, Duss talked about the possibilities for a left-right, progressive-MAGA, keffiyeh-and-cowboy hats coalition against war and for peace. We are opening this video to all. Free cross-over episode with the Bang-Bang Podcast. In this finale to our Andor series, Van and Lyle are joined by returning guest Paul Adlerstein and—making his first appearance on the pod—Matt Duss, former foreign policy advisor to Senator Bernie Sanders and current executive vice president at the Center for International Policy. The conversation spans the closing arc of Andor Season 2 and Rogue One, treating them as one long meditation on revolutionary grief, sacrifice, and strategy. We reflect on Kleya Marki's backstory, Deedra Meero's karmic consignment to the labor camps, and the quiet closure of Bix Caleen's journey from warrior to survivor, cradling new life in a liberated field. We also discuss Cassian's confrontation with the rebel leadership and his scathing defense of Luthen Rael. Namely, his accusation that those who sit in safety have committed only a fraction of the sacrifice they demand of others. As well as Bail Organa's (wink wink, nod nod) “May the Force be with you, captain,” sealing the fate of Cassian's transition from hunted thief to selfless insurgent. In our Rogue One discussion, we note the apocalyptic awe of Krennic's “Oh, it's beautiful” as he watches Jedha obliterated, a moment that recalls the real-world language of U.S. reporters and officials after Hiroshima.Check out the Bang-Bang Podcast and subscribe: https://www.bangbangpod.com/

On today's show, Sam covers the chaos surrounding Donald Trump's tariffs and the administration's efforts to explain themselves. Our guest is Matt Duss, Executive Vice-President at the Center for International Policy and a former adviser to Bernie Sanders. Their conversation covers the global reaction to the tariffs, Israel's ongoing assault on Gaza, the U.S.'s bombardment of Yemen & the talks between the U.S. and Iran set to take place this weekend. Follow Matt Duss and his work here: https://bsky.app/profile/mattduss.bsky.social https://www.undiplomaticpodcast.com/ In the fun half, Sam marvels at the more of Trump world's intellectual gymnastics to try to explain and justify the tariffs, including Trump's trade representative who was testifying live in the House Ways & Means Committee when the tariffs were reversed on every country except China. Also, Elon Musk gets cyber-bullied out of his own live stream. Sam also takes some listener calls and reads some IMs. You can call SC Governor Henry McMaster at (803) 734 - 2100 to oppose the execution of Mikal Mahdi by firing squad (!) on Friday. This week Washington was abuzz with a security scandal over a group chat planning the bombing of Yemen accidentally included magazine editor Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic. Lost amid the finger pointing about operational security was the fact that the bombing of Yemen is illegal, immoral, and ineffective. To take up the actual scandal of the war, I spoke with Matt Duss, executive vice president of the Center for International Policy. We also discuss the actual contents of the group chat which real important fissures within Trump's foreign policy team between neo-conservatives who favor fighting as many wars as possible and unilateralists who insist there has to be a prioritizing of conflicts. This fissure opens the path to a much different foreign policy, one that the left can play a role in shaping.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Donald Trump and JD Vance have a surprising closing message in the 2024 election: they are the antiwar candidate. About the rising conflict in the Middle East, Trump has said, “I wanna see it all stop, I wanna see the Middle East get back to peace.” On a podcast, Vance criticized the Biden “Even though they say they want to minimize Palestinian civilian casualties, they pursued the pathway that maximizes those casualties. They say that they're pro-Israel. They've pursued the pathway that has prolonged the war as long as possible, which is bad for Israel.”This message is of course deeply cynical since Trump is planning on staffing his administration with hawks, as he did in his first term. But it might have appeal to undecided voters, who polls show are strongly antiwar. To discuss why Democrats have ceded the peace vote to the GOP, I talked to Matt Duss, vice president of the Center for International Policy and frequent guest of the show. This episode is about assessing Joe Biden's foreign policy as it relates to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. While not a whole lot has changed in terms of the substance of US policy towards Palestine and Israel, a lot has indeed changed in terms of the political discourse in Washington. Uzair talked to Matt Duss about these developments and the long-term implications of Biden's foreign policy choices. We also talked about the prospects for a broad agreement with Saudi Arabia, and the ways in which communities can engage at the grassroots levels to influence foreign policy. Matt Duss is Executive Vice-President at the Center for International Policy. The Center for International Policy is a woman-led, progressive, independent nonprofit center for research, education, and advocacy working to advance a more peaceful, just, and sustainable U.S. approach to foreign policy. Before joining CIP, Duss was a visiting scholar in the American Statecraft Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. From 2017-22, Duss was foreign policy advisor to Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt). Duss's work has been widely published, including in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Foreign Affairs, The Nation, The American Prospect, and Foreign Policy. Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Matt Duss, executive vice president at the Center for International Policy, to discuss the recent events from the weekend in Israel, Palestine, & foreign policy. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Macron's call for snap elections in France, Israel's mass slaughter of Palestinians in the freeing of four hostages, UC's academic worker strike, Biden's newest Executive Order on immigration, Trump-Biden polling, social media, and Bob Menendez legal troubles, before diving into Marjorie Taylor Greene's parallel between two people definitely criminally convicted by federal governments, Donald Trump and Jesus Christ. Matt Duss then joins, diving right into Biden's recent decision to overshadow Trump's conviction with an announcement of supposed ongoing ceasefire negotiations of Israel's design, and how these talks inevitably fell into the same pattern of Netanyahu taking drastic action to prove bad faith to push Palestinian actors to kill the deal, unpacking why Biden is so scared of actually holding Israel to account, and touching on the major impact the continuation of this conflict is having on the already-precarious standing of US legitimacy in the Middle East. Returning to the ceasefire document, Duss walks through the important step toward peace this proposal represents, with contents that would actually require Biden (and others) to confront the Israeli government's illegal occupation and the future of Palestinian statehood, before shifting to a brief conversation on domestic politics in Israel, from public opinion on the war to the power of Netanyahu's far-right coalition, and touch on the recent Nuseirat Massacre and its further undermining of the humanitarian effort in Gaza. After reflecting on the Biden Administration's failures with the Iran Nuclear Deal, Matt, Sam, and Emma wrap up with a brief assessment of the rising threat of fascism in Europe, and the slight containment of fascism in India. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma dive into the (minimal) coverage of Israel's internment camp and the horrors faced by Palestinian detainees, Sean from Spain explores various organizing efforts, and Kenny from Berkeley expands on the UC school system's attempt to use California's conservative courts to break the backs of its academic workers. Seb Gorka and guest discuss how very relatable they (and Donald Trump) are to the working class and Don from New Jersey on escalating dissent against US support for genocide in Gaza. Donald Trump goes teleprompter-free and hits his audience with some raw truths, like “I don't pay contractors,” Steve Bannon discusses the political lawfare being exercised against him, and Kristi Noem gets protective against Dana Bash, plus, your calls and IMs! It's News Day Tuesday! But first, Sam and Emma speak with Matt Duss, executive vice president at the Center for International Policy, to discuss the events of the past weekend involving Iran & Israel. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Trump's legal woes, Israel's ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, the New York Times' anti-Palestinian bias, the House GOP's conflicted agenda, DOJ anti-trust, and SCOTUS' recent attack on protest, before exploring reports on how Trump's hush money case is devastatingly interfering in his personal life. Matt Duss then joins, first parsing through the context for Iran's retaliation against Israel, including the consistent communication between Iran and the US, and clear intent from Iran to deescalate in the wake of their attack on Israeli military facilities, before touching on the conflict between the genuine threat of rising tensions in the region and the understanding that this response could have been much worse. After briefly touching on the role that this Iran-Israel affair plays in Bibi Netanyahu's attempt to cling to power (and Israel's attempt to maintain international legitimacy), they shift to the US perspective, exploring the complete failure of Biden's approach to Israel's genocidal and offensive campaign, and what it has done to undermine his ability to reestablish (or even maintain) an international rules-based order. Sam and Emma wrap up the first half by diving into the ongoing attempt by the House to reauthorize FISA's expansion of the surveillance state. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Mike Johnson maintain a brave facade in the face of his party's insanity, chat with a Tesla worker, and watch Clay Travis and Buck Sexton walk through their plan to get Trump off (of his criminal charges). Annie Fitzgerald calls in to discuss her campaign for State House in Washington's 38th District, Matthew from Oregon on the hypocrisy of Israel's rhetoric, and John Hagee reiterates Christian Theocrats' support for Israel.
