Welcome back friends! Have you ever been in a marching band? We have, and we're happy to share all about it... which transitions semi-seamlessly (it doesn't) into our deep dive into The Music Man. We have a lot of thoughts about this show, but most importantly: whose idea was it to use the word 'Shipoopi' to describe a woman? Let us know how you feel! @downstageleftpc downstageleftpc@gmail.com downstageleftpodcast.com

This week, we continue our conversation with Daniel Pollack-Pelzner, a tenured professor who has been fired from, and is now filing a lawsuit against, Linfield University, which would prefer to try to silence its critics rather than address the serious accusations of sexual misconduct against current and former members of Linfield's board of trustees. Featuring: a special appearance from Washington Post theatre (and "Shipoopi") critic Peter Marks; comic bestiality, William Goldman's observation about what the real drag of a story can be; nostalgia for ancient things called “video stores;” shout-outs to In The Heights, Brigadoon (and its modern counterpart Schmigadoon!), Fiddler on the Roof, The Music Man, Ben Franklin in Paris, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Lerner & Leowe, Cabaret, and Sweeney Todd; and most fundamentally, important childhood connections to great musicals of the past. PART ONE OF OUR CONVERSATION CAN BE FOUND HERE. (Length 16:00) The post Living In “Schmigadoon”! appeared first on Reduced Shakespeare Company.
Back in the day, Brett Mutter and I joyfully and exuberantly danced the Shipoopi together in The Music Man! As an actor and musician, he's performed all over the country and I absolutely love sharing the stage with him. In this episode we talk about recognizing the incredible amount of highly skilled and talented people who live outside of major cities. We both hope that artists continue to be celebrated and considered for projects even though they may not live in a major city. Thank you so much for listening and supporting the podcast!

Peter Marks, theatre critic of the Washington Post and co-host of American Theatre magazine's Three on the Aisle Podcast, famously loathes the song "Shipoopi" in Meredith Willson's The Music Man and this week we try to convince him just how wrong he is. Featuring strong emotional reactions; unworthy yet sophisticated analysis; unprovoked disdain of garden gnomes; pilgrimages to Mason City, Iowa; reverse snobbery; comparing Act Two openings; anthropomorphizing a month; ideal Harold Hill casting (the less said about Matthew Broderick, the better); and ultimately a celebration of one the American musical theatre’s greatest (give or take a song or two) shows. WARNING: No minds were changed in the recording of this podcast. Shipoopi may be the worst song ever... but Kari has made me see the light about the rest of The Music Man. There will be laughs, there will be fun facts, there will be a horrible intro song (which I happen to find hilarious). Enjoy!
Who cares about the episode when you have the most epic musical number of all ponyhood? There’s a whole huge plot line of this episode of how the Apple family might lose their farm and how mad Rainbow Dash is that she can’t get any cider. But the only thing that really matters is the Music Man -esque epic that the Flim Flam Brothers bring to Ponyville. Only Peter Griffin in his Super Bowl rendition of “Shipoopi” has matched this level of musical artistry. So get ready to fall for the con while singing along.Audio from "The Flim Flam Cider Song" was taken from BronyVision1 on Youtube. Pilot episode before we had good mics. But Gaby and co-host Harrison B. discuss THE ONLY SHOW EVER about con men in small towns, Broadway's first rap, what exactly is a Shipoopi, and surprise famous people from Gary, Indiana.
Oh, hello! On this week's episode of How Was Your Week, Choire Sicha is here! He is one of the editors of The Awl and the author of an upcoming book you must read, plus a very good-looking person with stunning eyes who also happens to loves cats. Choire joins Julie to talk about his life story and how he ended up a gay married person after working and living in different places and doing different things and generally living an interesting life! Then, comedian, actor, writer and DEAR FRIEND Curtis Gwinn joins Julie to talk extensively about Carl Jung, ventriloquists, horror movies, and what lessons we can learn from The Purple Rose of Cairo. It is a good talk that contains many tributaries that flow into the darker corners. Also, Julie has a triumphant proclamation to make about Jimmy Jazz, Marilu Henner tweets the ultimate Marilu Henner thing on Mothers' Day, Michael Caine does or does not get trapped in an attic, Dark Shadows is appreciated as a modern-day Touchtone joint, and what not to say to a redhead when she tries something on at your store. Plus: How not to be mean on the internet! Why to be concerned when Julie resorts to bed for a turkey burger and Kubrick movie marathon! Anne Heche's fillers are explored! And what would happen if Johnny Depp and Daniel Tosh played strip poker together. A meeting of the minds and souls. And a fine show to boot! ***Please note: In this week's show, Julie mis-attributes Shipoopi as being from The Pajama Game. She is incorrect and regrets saying so: it is from The Music Man.
