Be Bold & Turn To God (Be Bold Series)Psalm 138:7-8 “Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life. You stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes; with your right hand, you save me. The Lord will vindicate me; your love, Lord, endures forever—do not abandon the works of your hands. When I read this passage, I got the picture of a football player holding the ball in his right hand, with his body turned away from the opposing player and his other hand out to block.  However, instead of being a football player, it is God.  He has His right arm around me, shielding me from danger, and His left hand out to shield me from the anger of my enemies.  To me, this is a beautiful image.  I am so thankful that I know that God is out there protecting me.  I have heard some incredible stories of this protection.  I think that sometimes we can think that God can protect us from things by helping us avoid them or making sure we are in the right place at the right time.  And He does do this.  However, He can also protect you from danger at the moment as well.  The verse above starts with the statement, “You preserve my life.”  I would like to tell you a story that is an excellent example of this.  The story is from the book “How To Live Like A King's Kid."  by Harold Hill.  If you have not read this book, I can't recommend it enough.  It is so good and will definitely boost your faith. Here is a short excerpt of how God can save you from real physical danger at the moment.  “Recently, I was driving down a divided highway to a meeting. The dividing strip was maybe 20 feet wide. Suddenly, a car coming from the other direction, going about 70, the same speed I was traveling, started to cross the strip. It was headed straight for me. A 140 mph impact was in the making, with me in the middle.  Mincemeat.I was glad I didn't have to wait to get into the high gear of praise and Thanksgiving because I wouldn't have had time. It all happened so fast. Walking in the light has to do with all circuits being tuned up by praise and Thanksgiving all the time – in everything, giving thanks for everything. I have been walking in the light all day. So I thanked God and prayed in the spirit for the people in the other car all in the same breath, realizing it could be my last one. But I was singing the songs of Zion, knowing that King's kids don't have to graduate on Satan's terms. The car hurtling at me was less than 20 yards away when suddenly it shot straight up in the air and turned upside down. It was a convertible, the top was down, and people flew in all directions. Then, the car crashed flat right alongside me."Lord, do you want me to stop?" I asked him then. “No. Don't stop. You intercede,” was is the message I got. In my rearview mirror, I could see other cars and trucks stopping. They wouldn't need my physical presence there, but God needed me to be an intercessor.  And so I kept on praying, praising God, praying in tongues. I was aware of raw power, rivers of living water, flowing from my innermost being directly to the throne of grace as I interceded in the spirit. Before I was half a mile down the road, I had God's assurance that he had taken care of everything, and I went to my meeting satisfied. That was Friday. On Sunday morning, I was invited to speak at the Kent Island Methodist church near where the accident occurred. I shared my experience from the pulpit and said that if anyone present knew the outcome of the accident, I'd like to hear about it. I knew something good had taken place. Sure enough, three people came to me at the church door after the service and said they were at the scene just a few minutes after the accident happened because they lived close by. The car had blown a tire, going at high speed, and had gotten completely out of control. The people in the convertible had fallen clear of the car, and everyone had walked away from the accident! The car was demolished, but no person was injured. It was a miracle.A car coming straight at you on a level Road does not suddenly jump straight up in the air. From straight forward motion to vertical motion is impossible unless you hit something curved to change the course. And that's what happened in that accident. The car's course was changed when it hit a curved surface – the curved circle of light that prevented darkness from entering to annihilate a king's kid.  There were millions of foot-pounds of energy involved, but that's nothing for an angel of the Lord. Hallelujah! When we call upon the king, he works supernaturally to deliver us from trouble.”I always get emotional when I hear stories like this because I am reminded of how much God loves us and that He will go to any lengths to save us.  I also get emotional because of how touching it is.  These people all seemed to be headed for death.  Their lives could have been over in an instant.  And they weren't.  Satan meant for that tire to go out and for the situation to end badly.  If Satan had gotten his way, those people would have died.  You and I don't know the state of their souls, but even if they went to heaven, what about the effects of their deaths on those still living?  Unexpected death of a loved one often brings with it anger.  It can cause some to question God and why He would let such an awful thing happen.  Some people get angry with God and they don't let it go.  However, it says in Genesis 50:20, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.”  God takes Satan's plan for evil and uses it for good.  Harold Hill has sold over 1,000,000 copies of his book.  He has also probably told that story to thousands of people or more.  Instead of this story ending in tragedy, it is a story that has probably given people faith that they did not have before and definitely strengthened the faith of those who were already believers.  How incredible is that?  Dear Heavenly Father, I pray that you bless all those listening to this episode today.  Lord, we thank you for your protection.  We thank you for all the miracles you make happen every single day, the big and the small ones.  Lord, we thank you for all the times you protected us from something that we didn't even know about.  Lord, we ask that you help us learn to make a habit of praising you so that if we are in a situation like Harold was, we will be prepared.  We love you, Lord, and we ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus' holy name, Amen.Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus! I look forward to meeting you here again tomorrow. Remember, Jesus loves you just as you are, and so do I! "The Music Man" by Meredith Willson is a classic, big-hearted American musical that premiered on Broadway in 1957 and went on to win five Tony awards. We invite you to fritter away some time with us while we discuss the love (Forrest) and hate (Lenny) relationship we here at Settling Scores have with this show, which features several standards of the musical theatre canon such as Seventy-Six Trombones, Trouble, 'Til There Was You, Pickalittle and Gary, Indiana.  Along the way, we'll explore several instances of subtle racism in the original score, discuss some fabulous and not-so-fabulous performances (…ahem, looking at you, 2022 revival cast), listen to a cover by none other than the fabulous Ms. Patti LuPone, and of course we'll “talk, talk, talk, talk, and bicker, bicker, bicker” all the while. “Yessssir, yessssir!”   Synopsis: Charming con-man-with-a-heart-of-gold Harold Hill arrives in the small town of River City, Iowa, posing as a boys' band organizer. He sweet talks the townspeople into investing in instruments and uniforms for the band he claims he will lead, despite having no musical ability. Along the way, Hill meets and falls for Marian Paroo, the straight-laced town librarian and music teacher, who sees through his scheme, but finds herself falling for him nonetheless. As Hill's deception unravels, he must decide whether to flee or face the consequences, ultimately discovering a deeper connection to the town - and to Marian - than he anticipated. This spirited and infectious musical explores themes of love, trust, and the transformative power of music in a nostalgic portrayal of early 20th-century America. Bona fide happy ending, guaranteed.   And join us over on our Facebook and Instagram pages to tell us what you think!

I talk a lot about the importance of brand messaging on this show and with my clients 1:1. And for sure, brand messages are essential for your business - you want to ensure that your ideal client knows what you offer and what makes you unique. But storytelling takes things to a whole new level. Storytelling is all about building emotional connections with your ideal clients and creating a sense of authenticity and identity for your brand. It's not just about communicating your business value - it's about connecting with your client on a deeper, more personal level. When you incorporate storytelling into your marketing and branding strategies, you're not just telling people what you do; you're showing them who you are. This emotional connection is crucial for consultants and coaches, where trust and credibility are key. You might think that you don't have exciting stories to tell, that it's just a gimmick, or that your clients won't care. But that is not the case! Today I'll be going over the four stories your business needs and give you some tips on how to get started in crafting those stories. In this episode, you'll hear: The four stories that a business needs How to get started in crafting those stories Four key stories that consultants and coaches should consider sharing in their business Incorporating storytelling into marketing to create a more meaningful and impactful presence for your business Why curating and practicing stories is vital to create a competitive edge Where to dive in: [02:34] Learn how to share your, "What I do..." story and the framework you need to use. [06:45] Craft your business backstory and craft it to the person you're talking to. [14:25] Hear about the most important story you'll tell, your "WHY story." [18:59] Tune in for the big recap and what you need to do next. Next steps: Curate the stories that relate to your business – your own stories and client stories. Pick one of the stories to focus on first -I'd recommend you start with the “what I do” story since it's the least vulnerable and the one you'll use the most and then practice it If you want to take your storytelling to the next level – definitely join us in the Purpose to Profits Academy, my membership community that offers weekly live masterclasses and hot seats, role plays and other action learning opportunities. Starting in May we'll be working on developing the scripts and practicing our storytelling so that when we're in front of clients, we'll be on muscle memory. Today, we're talking again about burnout and the CURE. I had a fantastic conversation with burnout expert Rachelle Stone and Lori Smith a few weeks back. I had a sense then I should open up about my struggle with burnout and what I learned from it, but then I chickened out. I went the safe route and did a couple of interviews with outstanding entrepreneurs. But then I was coaching a client about finding the courage to own their story and use it to help others. I realized it was time for me to do the same. So here it goes! Hi, I'm Betsy. I'm a recovering stressaholic. It's been 30 minutes since my last email check. Okay, five minutes. The truth is, I have struggled with burnout for years due to the challenges of running a business and raising kids as a single mom. Recently, after a cross-country move and becoming an empty nester, I experienced another burnout at new levels. This burnout was more like soul burnout or spiritual fatigue that no trips to the spa, bubble baths, or even a new set of supplements would solve. This experience forced me to take a hard look at my approach to balance and self-care. I realized that I had been neglecting my needs and boundaries around work, and I needed to make some changes in my life and business to prevent burnout from taking over again. That's why I want to share my journey of recovery and reinvention! I will also share the practical tips and tools that have helped me bounce-back from burnout. So, let's get started with the CURE method for burnout recovery! Where To Dive In [2:11] Compassion. The first step to curing burnout. [04:07] How to know of you're burnedout or just busy and stressed. [05:13] Understanding. The next step to get beyond symptoms and get to root causes. [05:38] Categories that will help you understand your burnout. [06:32] Identify the categories contributing to your burnout. [09:09] Reimaging and reinventing your life and business. [09:29] Why and how to do a start/stop/continue on your life and business. Learn where you really need to focus so you can get out of burnout. [18:43] What is giving your energy and what is draining you? How can this change your life and business? [19:17] Energy and capacity management. [23:30] Why you need to focus on doing the things "only you can do" and let go of the rest. Next Steps I want to leave you with three actions you can take today to start your burnout recovery journey: • First, take a break! Whether it's a five-minute breathing exercise or a day off, prioritize rest and self-care.• Second, journal about your own burnout experience. What are the messages it's trying to tell you? What changes can you make to address the root causes?• And finally, consider seeking support from a coach, therapist, or supportive community. Sometimes it takes a village to overcome burnout. And if your burnout is because you have work you have fallen out of love with or are just tired of growing your business alone, I'm here for you. Head to www.betsyjordyn.com/services to learn how I can empower you to create a business and life you love. Remember, burnout is not something that happens because you're lazy or can't cope with stress. You can find your path toward recovery and reinvention with compassion, understanding, a willingness to reimagine, and vigilant energy management. Take care! He caught the acting bug in high school and continued as an actor with a Shakespearean acting troupe and at the Pasadena Playhouse before being discovered by Paramount Studios in 1938 at the age of nineteen. The song “Seventy-Six Trombones” from The Music Man would forever link Robert Preston to the Broadway musical and the iconic 1962 film that would establish him as a Hollywood and Broadway star. His role as Harold Hill in The Music Man was a pivotal moment for the actor who appeared in dozens of films as well as theater and television productions. A master at shielding his private life, Robert Preston was a distinguished actor and gifted artist on the public stage, yet remained a reclusive, enigmatic man in his private life. Extensive archival research, and interviews Preston's family members and fellow actors including Rosemary Harris, Christopher Walken, Lesley Ann Warren, Loretta Swit, Bob Gunton, Neva Small, and others, has unveiled a richly detailed portrait of the gifted actor's personal life as well as an overview of the films and Broadway productions to which he lent his talent. REVIEWS "Debra Warren has written a fascinating and meticulous chronology of a heretofore enigmatic star – gregarious but intensely private, overachieving but underestimated, charismatic but modest, strategizing but sincere. Preston is now revealed in the full spectrum of his personality. Ms. Warren's passion for detail makes this biography as invaluable a reference as it is an enticing read.” - Ron Spivak, Musical Theater Historian

In September 2001, Oz Fudge was one of two town constables in Gander. While the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (the so-called “Mounties”) handled major criminal investigations, Fudge handled community-oriented enforcement, including traffic tickets, public disorderliness and the like. He was on duty monitoring speedsters in the school zone when he was alerted to the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers in New York City. Seemingly another country away, the trauma of the event was soon to arrive on his doorstep, as the air space was to ordered to clear immediately and all planes were instructed to land as soon as possible. This directive saw the town of Gander welcome 37 passenger aircraft, carrying 7000 passengers; world citizens who required a ‘home base' until safety could be guaranteed. These passengers had ‘come from away'. The response, care and generosity that ensued over the following week has come to illustrate the tremendous resilience and kindness of humanity. The community of Gander and the visitors in that week have become celebrated in the musical Come From Away. A joyous celebration of community and the human spirit to overcome any challenging event. It is immensely relatable and has never failed to elicit joy and confirm faith in the goodness of humanity. Oz Fudge has now joined the ranks of Harold Hill, Tevye and Danny Zuko, in becoming a character in a Broadway musical. But it is as a result of being a fascinating part, of a story that changed the world. Oz was recently in Sydney where we caught up and he keenly shared his experience of that week whilst heralding the brilliance of the musical Come From Away, which is now on tour around Australia and New Zealand.

You Preserve My LifePsalm 138:7-8 “Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life. You stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes; with your right hand you save me. The Lord will vindicate me; your love, Lord, endures forever—do not abandon the works of your hands. When I read this passage I get the picture of a football player holding the ball in his right hand, with his body turned away from the opposing player and his other hand out to block.  However, instead of a football player it is God.  He has His right arm around me shielding me from danger and His left hand out to shield me from the anger of my enemies.  To me, this is a beautiful image.  I am so thankful that I know that God is out there protecting me.  I have heard some incredible stories of this protection.  I think that sometimes we can think that God can protect us from things by helping us avoid them, or making sure we are in the right place at the right time.  And He does do this.  However, He can also protect you from danger in the moment as well.  The verse above starts with the statement that says, “You preserve my life.”  I would like to tell you a story that is an excellent example of this.  The story is from the book “How To Live Like A King's Kid."  by Harold Hill.  If you have not read this book I can't recommend it enough.  It is so good and will definitely boost your faith. Here is a short excerpt of how God can save you from real physical danger in the moment.  “Recently I was driving down a divided highway to a meeting. The dividing strip was maybe 20 feet wide. Suddenly, a car coming from the other direction, going about 70, the same speed I was traveling, started to cross the strip. It was headed straight for me. A 140 mph impact was in the making with me in the middle of it.  Mincemeat.I was glad that I didn't have to wait to get into the high gear of praise and Thanksgiving, because I wouldn't have had time. It all happened so fast. Walking in the light has to do with all circuits being tuned up by praise and Thanksgiving all the time – in everything giving thanks for everything. I have been walking in the light all day. So I was thanking God and praying in the spirit for the people in the other car all in the same breath, realizing it could be my last one. But I was singing the songs of Zion, knowing that Kings kids don't have to graduate on Satan's terms. The car hurtling at me was less than 20 yards away when suddenly is shot straight up in the air, and turned upside down. It was a convertible, the top was down and people flew in all directions. Then the car crashed flat, right alongside me."Lord, do you want me to stop?" I asked him then. “No. Don't stop. You intercede,” was is the message I got. In my rearview mirror I could see other cars and trucks stopping they wouldn't need my physical presence there but God needed me to be an intercessor.  And so I kept on praying, praising God, praying in tongues. I was aware of raw power, rivers of living water, flowing from my innermost being direct to the throne of grace as I interceded in the spirit. Before I was half a mile down the road, I had gods assurance that he had taken care of everything, and I went to my meeting satisfied. That was Friday. On Sunday morning, I had an invitation to speak at the Kent Island Methodist church near the place where the accident had occurred. I shared my experience from the pulpit and said that if anyone present knew the outcome of the accident, I'd like to hear about it. I knew something good had taken place. Sure enough, three different people came to me at the door of the church after the service and said they were at the scene just a few minutes after the accident happened, because they lived close by. The car had blown a tire, going at high speed and had gotten completely out of control. The people in the convertible had fallen clear of the car, and every one of them had walked away from the accident! The car was demolished Dash but no person was injured. It was a miracle.A car coming straight at you on a level Road does not suddenly jumped straight up in the air. From straight forward motion to vertical motion is impossible unless you hit something curved to change the course. And that's what happened in that accident. The cars course was changed when it hit a curved surface – the curved circle of light that prevented darkness from entering to annihilate a kings kid.  There were millions of foot pounds of energy involved but that's nothing for an angel of the Lord. Hallelujah! When we call upon the king he works supernaturally to deliver us from trouble.”I always get emotional when I hear stories like this because I am reminded of how much God loves us and that He will go to any lengths to save us.  I also get emotional because of how touching it is.  These people all seemed to be headed for death.  Their lives could have been over in an instant.  And they weren't.  Satan meant for that tire to go out and for the whole situation to end badly.  If Satan had gotten his way those people would have died.  You and I don't know the state of their souls, but even if they went to heaven, what about the after affects of their deaths on those still living. Instead of this story ending in tragedy it is a story that has probably given people faith that did not have it before and definitely strengthened the faith of those that were already believers.  How incredible is that?  Dear Heavenly Father, I pray that you bless all those listening to this episode today.  Lord, we thank you for your protection.  We thank you for all of the miracles you make happen every single day, the big ones and the small ones.  Lord, we thank you for all the times you protected us from something that we didn't even know about.  Lord, we ask that you help us learn to make a habit of praising you so that if we are in a situation like Harold was we would be prepared.  We love you Lord, and we ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus' holy name, Amen.

This podcast covers New Girl Season 2, Episode 13, A Father's Love, which originally aired on January 15, 2013 and was directed by Jake Kasdan and written by Berkley Johnson and Josh Malmuth. Here's a quick recap of the episode:Nick is surprised when his father shows up for an unexpected visit and Jess finds out that he's a con man when hilarity ensues at a horse race track. Meanwhile, Schmidt runs into Robby and both try to win Cece back. We discuss Pop Culture References such as:Kalinka - When Nick and his dad were being confronted by the Russian horse dealers, the Russians started singing the Russian folk tune, Kalinka.Sugar Ray [Leonard] / Sugar Ray [Robinson] - The con Nick did as a kid was called the Sugar Ray, where he would pretend to be a diabetic kid.Additional Pop Culture References such as:Chicago Bulls (“Chica Go Bills”) - The hats Walt tried to get Nick and Winston to sell as kids didn't say “Chicago Bulls”, but instead said “Chica Go Bills”. The Chicago Bulls are an American professional basketball team based in Chicago. The Bulls compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league's Eastern Conference Central Division. The Music Man - Professor Harold Hill from The Music Man used the scheme of "Fake trombones for a fake band" like Jess references when she learns that Walt is a con man. The Music Man is a 1962 American musical film based on Meredith Willson's 1957 Broadway musical of the same name. The premise is that Harold Hill poses as a boys' band leader to con naïve Iowa townsfolk.Uncle Buck - When Jess is trying to sell the horse, she exclaims, “Damn it, Uncle Buck! This horse will never race again.” Uncle Buck is a 1989 American comedy film written and directed by John Hughes and starred John Candy as Uncle Buck, a bachelor and all-around-slob who babysits his brother's rebellious teenage daughter and her younger brother and sister. When Schmidt is bummed he never got Cece to wear a sari for sexual reasons, he spoofed a few movie scenarios in his head:Monsoon Wedding - Monsoon Wedding is a 2001 Indian comedy-drama film that depicts romantic entanglements during a traditional Punjabi Hindu wedding in Delhi. Although it is set entirely in New Delhi, the film was an international co-production between companies in India, the United States, Italy, France, and Germany.Slumdog Millionaire - Slumdog Millionaire is a 2008 British drama film that is a loose adaptation of the novel Q & A by Indian author Vikas Swarup, telling the story of 18-year-old Jamal Malik from the Juhu slums of Mumbai reflecting on his life after being accused of cheating on the Indian version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?".The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel - The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a 2011 British comedy-drama film based on the novel These Foolish Things by Deborah Moggach, and features a group of British pensioners moving to a retirement hotel in India, run by a young and eager man.Hilary Swank - Jess says Nick seems like Hilary Swank mixed with a wet dog when he was nervous about lying. Hilary Ann Swank is an American actress and film producer. She began acting in 1992 and came to international recognition in the early 2000s for her performances as Brandon Teena, a trans man, in Kimberly Peirce's Boys Don't Cry, and as Maggie Fitzgerald, an aspiring boxer, in Clint Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby. When Schmidt and Robby were brainstorming a plan to get Cece back they referenced:Ocean's Twelve / Brad Pitt - Ocean's Twelve is an American heist comedy film and is the second installment of the Ocean's franchise. William Bradley [Brad] Pitt is an American actor and film producer who received multiple accolades including: two Golden Globe Awards and an Academy Award for his acting, and another Academy Award, another Golden Globe Award and a Primetime Emmy Award as a producer.Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is a 1969 American Western film based loosely on fact, telling the story of Wild West outlaws Robert LeRoy Parker, known as Butch Cassidy, and his partner Harry Longabaugh, the "Sundance Kid" who are two con men on the run. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was selected by the American Film Institute as the 7th-greatest Western of all time in 2008.We also cover Robby and Schmidt's conversation about elephants as our “Schmidtism” this episode. For our “not in the 2020s” we discuss Schmidt and Robby crashing Cece's house, how they exclaimed ‘white guy power', and their lack of sensitivity for others' cultures. Our “yes in the 2020s” covers Schmidt and Robby's friendship. We also give a brief look into Dennis Farina (Walt), Stone Eisenmann (Young Nick), and Jordan Fuller (Young Winston), the guest stars of this episode. Also in this episode were the following guest stars who we do not discuss in the podcast: Nelson Franklin (Robby - Previously discussed in S2E1), Pasha D. Lychnikoff (Buyer #1), Ivo Nandi (Buyer #2), Nick Vallelonga (Owner), Cris D'Annunzio (Dusty), Mona Sishodia (Pavun's aunt), Juliocesar Chavez (Kid), Sunit Gupta (Pavun's Father), Thushari Jayasekera (Pavun's cousin), and Andy Kimbel (Race Fan).We also discuss how the character Pavun Shetty is played by himself and he was a producer on New Girl, how Nick's room has a picture of Jimmy Croche in it, and how the glass of orange juice that Schmidt knocks over while stalking Cece is upright when he talks to Robby later. While not discussed in the podcast, we noted other references in this episode including:(Vice President) Joe Biden - In this episode, Nick mentions that one of the people he'd want to be unpredictable is Vice President Joe Biden. Joseph Biden Jr. was born in 1942 and served as the 47th Vice President of the United States from 2009 to 2017 under President Barack Obama. He was also elected the 46th President of the United States in 2021. Prior to his time as a Vice President he was also the Delaware Senator for 36 years, being sworn in just after he turned 30.Sari - When Cece is meeting with Pavun's family, she's wearing a sari which makes Schmidt upset. A sari is an article of clothing, traditionally from the Indian subcontinent that is wrapped around the waist with one end around the shoulder. There are many styles of wearing the sari and most are worn with a blouse and an under-skirt called a petticoat.Throughout the episode Schmidt and Robby circled through multiple ideas on how to get Cece back including the following:Trojan horse - This is a reference to the wooden horse used by the Greeks to enter Troy and win the Trojan War by sneaking inside and destroying the city. Since, it has metaphorically been used to mean any trick that invites the target to invite their enemy into a secure location that they are in.Buying a Star - Although there are a number of registries that allow you to buy and name a star which results in a certificate with the star's name, no astronomer or observatory will refer to the star by the name you purchased as this is more of a novelty gift.United States Navy Ball - The “Naval Officers' Ball” that Robby mentioned is an annual celebratory ball recognizing the birthday of the United States Navy, which was signed into order on October 13, 1775. During the Ball, there is also a keynote speech, dinner and desserts, a cake cutting ceremony, official toasts from high level officers, and even musical performances. This episode got a 7.5/10 Rating from Kritika whose favorite character was Nick and Kelly rated this episode a 7.5/10 and her favorite character was Jess! Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 14!Music: "Hotshot” by scottholmesmusic.comFollow us on Twitter, Instagram or email us at whosthatgirlpod@gmail.com!Website: https://smallscreenchatter.com/

What happens when the city that barely ever sleeps finds out one morning that it can’t wake up? All the joe has lost its jolt. This is a job for the woman detective who sees all, Harriet Eyeball, Private Eye in “The Coffee Caper,” an all-improvised Noir Radio Drama based on listener suggestions. Tune in as The EDGE troupe members Todd Erler, Cynthia Lair, Susan MacPherson, Chris Soldevilla, Ken Ballenger, John Ellis, and Andrew Shields tackle the case. TODD ERLER Todd is very lucky. He had the good fortune of being trained in the art of improv in the early nineties by some of the Chicagoans who were pioneers in that field. Since then Todd has led two and a half improv groups, taught improv classes, worked with Unexpected Productions in Seattle and now gets to perform with The EDGE. Todd teaches in the amazing Odyssey program for the Bainbridge Island School District. He is also a musician who writes and performs his own music and plays Irish pub tunes locally as one half of the duo Rye and Barley. Sometimes Todd is cast in shows at BPA or with Island Theater's library plays. He even gets to direct a show every now and then. At one time Todd was the artistic director of the Jewel Box Theater in Poulsbo and wrote an improv blog called “Improvmantra.”   CYNTHIA LAIR Cynthia has authored three cookbooks, Feeding the Whole Family (currently in its fourth edition), Feeding the Young Athlete, and the latest – Sourdough on the Rise (admit it, you love bread too), which hit the ground baking in 2019. She’s been a professor at Bastyr University since the movie Pulp Fiction gave us a start (look it up). Find out “How to Cut an Onion” via her Tedx Rainier talk on YouTube. Improv has become her new occupation as she is also a company member and teacher for Unexpected Productions at the Market Theater. She claims, “Doing improv balances real and imaginary life for me. With the real part being what happens on stage.”   SUSAN MACPHERSON Susan started taking Improv classes in the early 1980's as a way to bypass the “Seattle Freeze” (the phenomenon where it is very hard to make friends when new to the city). She improvized her way right past that and went on the be one of the first founding women in Seattle TheatreSports as well as performing with None of The Above, Seattle Improv, and Unexpected Productions for many years before joining The EDGE. For money, she has managed retail stores, had her own line of jewelry for 10 years at Pike Market, been a breakfast chef at an all-treehouse resort owned by the Treehouse Master (Pete Nelson), and finally settled on work she absolutely loves for the last 22 years helping new families as a Postpartum Doula and Certified Baby Sleep Consultant. (Yes, she can get babies to sleep.) Susan is the proud mother of Geo- scientist, Carson, who is going for her Ph.D. in Geo-Hazard Mitigation. In Susan’s non-existent spare time, she can be seen camping in “Primrose”, her 1970-vintage, British caravan.   CHRIS SOLDEVILLA Chris has done Improv in Boston, L.A. as well as here on Bainbridge and teaches improvisors young and old at his acting/improv workshop The Studio Bainbridge. He has appeared on screens big and small and locally in BPA’s productions of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Twelve Angry Men, True West, and The Tempest. He got acclaim for his roles in Swinging Hammer’s American Buffalo and Glengarry Glen Ross. Chris approaches life like he does improv: he makes it up on the spot…and asks complete strangers for suggestions. Online at www.thestudiobainbridge.com.   KEN BALLENGER Ken has been performing in the Seattle area for over 30 years. You may have seen him on stage, in commercials, and if you were alert at a few low budget movies, you may have spotted him. He is one of the founding members of The EDGE. In addition to performing he has taught workshops, practices karate, and, now retired, is enjoying life and carving things with a chain saw.   JOHN KENYON ELLIS John is happy to be back for season 24 of The EDGE. “Thanks Bainbridge for supporting The EDGE for all these years!!” Besides Improv, John has appeared on this stage in Noises Off, Annie, Born Yesterday, Guys and Dolls, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, As You Like It, ‘Art’ and Sylvia. He appeared as Falstaff in Merry Wives at Bloedel, and he most recently played a dream role as Andrey Botvinnick in InD’s production of Walk in the Woods. John was awarded the Island Treasure in 2018 for his years in The EDGE and on stage. “Miss you Frank! ONWARD!”   ANDREW SHIELDS Andrew has been called “a musical genius,” “phenomenal,” “immensely talented,” and “an unending source of irritation.” During his Wonder Bread years Andrew was fortunate to study piano under someone who studied under someone who studied under Liszt who studied under Beethoven who studied under Mozart. Andrew has a BA in Music from Stanford, where he won the Undergraduate Prize in Composition. More recently, he wrote the music, lyrics, and script for the original Reefer Madness: The Musical, as well as music, lyrics, and (with fellow EDGE member John Ellis) script for the musical Harry Tracy: A Bainbridge Bandit. He has music-directed shows at BPA, ACT, Village Theater, Tacoma Actors’ Guild, the Bathhouse Theater, and Second Story Repertory, among others, and played Harold Hill in The Music Man and Tito Merelli in Lend Me a Tenor at BPA. 00h 00'00" Till there was you - The Beatles 00h 02'09" Presentación 00h 03'47" Cabecera 00h 04'53" Inicio 00h 06'00" Overture / Rock Island 00h 11'29" Iowa Sttuborn 00h 14'22" Ya got trouble 00h 19'00" Piano lesson / If you don't mind me saying so 00h 21'20" Goodnight my someone 00h 24'40" Ya got troubles / 76 Trombones 00h 28'10" Ice cream / Sincere 00h 31'08" The sadder but wiser girl 00h 33'38" Pick-a-little, talk-a-little / Goodnight ladies 00h 36'34" Marian the librarian 00h 43'07" Gary, Indiana 00h 45'00" My white knight 00h 48'38" The Wells Fargo 00h 52'03" It's you 00h 53'35" Shipoopi 00h 57'49" Pick-a-little, talk-a-little (Reprise) 00h 59'06" Lida Rose / Will I ever tell tou? 01h 03'33" Gary, Indiana (Reprise) 01h 05'28" Till there was you 01h 09'14" 76 Trombones / Goodnight my someone 01h 11'20" Till there was you (Reprise) 01h 14'05" Finale 01h 17'00" Curiosidades y anécdotas 01h 18'26" Being in love 01h 22'10" Conclusión y agradecimientos  01h 24'06" 76 Trombones

In Episode 54, I'm chatting once again with my long-time friend and camp colleague, Dr. Jim Sears. I've known him as Camp Doctor  "Bones" for the past 14 years, but he is better known by his patients at his family's pediatric practice as "Dr. Jim." You might have caught our previous episode (Episode 51), where we talked about building kids' self esteem. In this episode, we talk about some of the benefits of camp and what we think parents can learn from summer camp to bring home some of the benefits of the experience. We touch on topics related to our kids' well-being, including positive behavior management, health tips, encouraging kids to be themselves, gain autonomy, and unplug! Positive Behavior Management Catch them doing the right thing Attention seeking behavior "Give the good attention to specific positive behaviors." Dr. Jim Sears Health Tips "Wow! What's different about my daily living up here at camp?" Quite active - more walking Incidental exercise- walking and chatting with friends from one activity to the next Meal structure - specific times for meals - not much snacking. Stay busy not bored "It's okay to be hungry." Dr. Jim Sears "How do I get my kids to eat the chicken and broccoli for dinner?" Healthy snacks available and the only option Discovering new foods through experiences away from home (like camp) Our kids need to be around other people besides us who are making healthy choices "Sometimes another mentor or adult can make really big strides with your kids." Audrey Being Themselves Clothing choices It's cool to be independent and do your hair a little bit differently Cool to be wacky-be your own self Get dirty Developing Autonomy "One of the best things about camp, for kids, is that, for the first time for many of them, they get to make their own choices and decisions about a lot of things, and they're not getting as micromanaged about all the details of their existence." Audrey Opportunties for independence when children are young- give small practice opportunities Being discerning about the world without being fearful Learning how to deal with little discomforts Unplugging/ Break from Technology No phones at lunch in school Meals at home unplugged Screen addiction "When you're on your phone, generally it's information going in, in, in...it doesn't allow stuff to come out." Dr. Jim "Car rides are one of your best chances with teens for meaningful conversations." Dr. Jim Navigating uncomfortable social situations without a phone is good About "Dr. Jim" Dr. Jim spent several years as a co-host on the Dr. Phil hit spin-off series called, The Doctors, a nationally syndicated hour-long daily talk show that is informative and entertaining! Peter Marks, theatre critic of the Washington Post and co-host of American Theatre magazine's Three on the Aisle Podcast, famously loathes the song "Shipoopi" in Meredith Willson's The Music Man and this week we try to convince him just how wrong he is. Featuring strong emotional reactions; unworthy yet sophisticated analysis; unprovoked disdain of garden gnomes; pilgrimages to Mason City, Iowa; reverse snobbery; comparing Act Two openings; anthropomorphizing a month; ideal Harold Hill casting (the less said about Matthew Broderick, the better); and ultimately a celebration of one the American musical theatre’s greatest (give or take a song or two) shows. There's a ring for your finger, it looks like the sun but it feels like the moon. Sweet Joni from Saskatoon … Don't go, don't go too soon Neil Young's unreleased love letter to Joni Mitchell, sentiments that we here at From the Bottom of the Record Box certainly feel. Joni Mitchell has been a constant in every music lovers life and right now in her failing health, we can only repay her with our love and gratitude for touching us so deeply with her beauty. There, I said it. Just not as cleverly as Uncle Neil. You too, Neil, are loved greatly by all of us. Thanks for sharing California of the seminal Blue by Joni Mitchell with us Tobin, but listeners, do yourselves a favour and listen to the whole captivating album here. It sounds merely as if the band had selected a chord and decided to worry the hell out of it for three-quarters of an hour In stark contrast to Joni Mitchell, On the Corner was the larger body of work that we selected Black Satin from, largely because it is the most "radio-friendly" track on the album. Largely panned on its release it has since gained popularity and proved to be largely influential on the coming genres of rap, hip hop, post-punk, electronica and funk. It was Miles' worst selling album, an attempt to regain young black Americans already lost to Rock 'n' Roll. We are no Miles Davis experts here at Record Box HQ, we'll leave it for John Szwed to have the final say on this excellent recording… Jazz musicians hated it, critics bemoaned Miles's fall from grace, and since Columbia failed to market it as a pop record, it died in the racks. Even now, when Davis's jazz-rock recordings are being reissued to great acclaim, On the Corner remains lost in time. Still, this record might well be the most radical break with the past of all of Davis's many breaks. Dense with rhythm and conceptually enriched with noises, his trumpet's role mixed down to that of a journeyman, the melody reduced to recycled Minimalist patterns, Davis broke every rule enforced by the jazz police. Yet today ... we hear that Davis was laying the foundations for drum 'n' bass, trip hop, Jungle, and all the other musics of repetition to come. Szwed, John F. (September 1998). "100 Records That Set the World on Fire (While No One Was Listening) — Miles Davis On the Corner (Columbia 1972)". The Wire. No. 175. London. p. 28 – via Exact Editions. Art-rock adventure As we discussed on the show, The Bends is a masterpiece, but one shadowed by this! Nearly not recorded at all due to writer's block and endless creative stalling, the final cut is daring and confident. And, it inspired Amanda Palmer's wand of thunder. Despite being 23 years old now, the whole cut still deserves a place in anyone's record box. Dumb fact Marian Hill is an American songwriting duo from Philadelphia consisting of production artist Jeremy Lloyd and vocalist Samantha Gongol. Their name comes from two characters, Marian Paroo and Harold Hill, from the musical The Music Man. From the Mothers of Invention to soul stomping funk masters As we mentioned in the show there are several recordings of Willin', the song that Frank Zappa heard and convinced Lowell George to go start his own band, out there. If you like this track then check out the 1972 Sailin' Shoes cut here.

Topics: The institutionalization and standardization of the concert band in the early years of the 20th Century as part of the larger social reform movements of the era. The “Golden Age” of the wind band during the 19th Century and how it performed European music, particularly the high art that hadn’t come to America yet. The founding of NAfME and the early goals of music education during the Progressive Era. Perhaps it's our popular culture, but the business of selling has gotten a terrible reputation.  Whether it’s Willy Loman trying to be “well liked,” or Harold Hill hoodwinking people from town to town, or Alec Baldwin's character of Blake in David Mamet's’ Glengarry Glen Ross, we've seen selling portrayed as as one of the least trustworthy endeavors. Even lower on the scale than members of congress. Selling in the 21st century is very different.  No longer is it about sleaze and closing.  Today it’s about science, persuasion and information. Selling is something we all do in our personal lives, and in our professional lives; even if we are not in the business of sales. Best selling author Daniel Pink, takes us inside this reality in To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Moving Others. My conversation with Daniel Pink:

Episode #17: Twice the talent, twice the laughs, twice as long! But when you're in the room with Ruth Gottschall and Mary Testa, you just don't want to leave! I had a fantastic afternoon with the two of them, chatting and websurfing and singing "Moving Right Along", the women's version. Yes, this is the same explicit song that you heard back in January for two guys in a gay bar, rewritten for two women in a singles bar. (The lyrics for this version appear in the back of the songbook.) Recorded 4/12/06.Where to begin? Ruth is a veteran of eight Broadway shows, most recently Jackie Mason's Laughing Room Only, however her longest run of late was as Eulalie Shinn in the revival of The Music Man, a role she will recreate this summer at the Sacramento Music Circus. Before that, you can catch her as Mrs. Upson in the sure-to-be-fabulous Kennedy Center production of Mame. Also, let PBS know that you want to see the educational series, Character Studies, so you can catch Ruth on the "Harold Hill" episode.Mary Testa's resumé is so impressive, I don't know what to mention first! Should I start with her two Tony nominations, for On the Town and 42nd Street? Her numerous Off Broadway credits and the Obie award for On the Town and From Above? Her amazing performances on the original cast recordings of In Trousers, Lucky Stiff, A Funny Thing Happened...Forum (with Ruth too!), A New Brain, Marie Christine, and most recently, Michael John La Chiusa's See What I Wanna See? Or should I just mention that she loves Faith, the Biped Dog and Michelle Collins' blog, You Can't Make It Up? Mary fans can catch her in the concert, Hands Across the Sea, at Merkin Hall on May 16th and 17th, as well as in Jam & Spice, a Kurt Weill revue at the Westport Playhouse in June.
