He's the nicest bad guy in town. His last name is an adverb. And he's got some pretty wacky bits! Sweetie pie comedian Josh Gondelman joins us to talk about 1984's Johnny Dangerously, Amy Heckerling's loving homage to 1930's gangster pictures. Things we attempt to understand in this episode: the cultural legacy of Joe Piscopo; the actual joke that's being told in the “Your Testicles and You” animated reel / is there one?; Marilu Henner's insane memory thing; if the Danny DeVito bull scene is a parody of anything; why does Richie Rich have cent signs in his name if he's so rich?; and most crucially - why is this movie so damned hard to see in 2025?!?! Adam (John Travolta) is an intrepid reporter for Rolling Stone magazine currently chasing the biggest story of his career while in LA....when he suddenly comes up with an intriguing back-up story: how healthclubs are becoming the singles bars of the 1980's. :P  And he zeroes in on one healthclub in particular which is called "The Sports Connection" and there he becomes immersed in their world, he is mostly drawn to Jessie (Oscar-winner Jamie Lee Curtis) who is a very charismatic aerobics instructor drawing enthusiastic crowds, though also has a past.  He begins chasing a story about her while also falling for her....and complications ensue.  Directed by James Bridges (The China Syndrome, Urban Cowboy), this was wall-to-wall pelvic thrusts and mid '80's synth-pop music and is otherwise hard to categorize...which might be a major reason it flopped so hard upon initial release almost forty years ago.  But it has since garnered a cult following and is fondly remembered by many as a campy time capsule from a different era.  It also co-stars Laraine Newman, Marilu Henner, Mathew Reed, and Anne DeSalvo.Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Jackie Chan is back in Hollywood (against his better judgment) and is joining a cavalcade of stars including Burt Reynolds, Dom Deluise, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Marilu Henner, Shirley MaClaine and MANY MORE - including ol' blue eyes himself Frank Sinatra - in the cross-country race (?) comedy (?) CANNONBALL RUN II which brings back all the things you know and love(?) about the first film, and.. well, that's just about it. It's pretty much the same thing. Except there's an orangutan this time, and Jackie has been teamed up with Richard Kiel just to make sure we all know he's extra small and (once again) bafflingly Japanese. Listen to Liam's blood pressure rise in REAL TIME as he describes his time with the film. ENJOY! We're celebrating 100 episodes this week by returning to not one but two recurring themes from nearly two years of the podcast: the filmography of Steve Martin and the belief that February belongs to romance -- two concepts that combine decently well with some magical realism in our movie of the week, an absurdist take on life and love in Los Angeles that still feels like a cutting send-up of the city more than 30 years later. It's 1991's L.A. Story, directed by Mick Jackson, written by Steve Martin, and starring Martin, Victoria Tennant, Richard E. Grant, Marilu Henner, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kevin Pollak, Patrick Stewart, Frances Fisher, Iman, Larry Miller, Woody Harrelson, Rick Moranis and John Lithgow. So tonally cartoonish that it feels Martin is moments away from being crushed by a grand piano and popping out the top of it unscathed at any moment, that silliness conceals an earnest goodness about love, the universe, and everything finding a way to work out as it should. Are these beliefs that go hand-in-hand with the movie's wacky exterior, or does the film find itself at odds with itself? Find out, as we dive into a movie Hayley recently picked up on VHS. Plus: J Mo's still sore from having climbed into the wrestling ring over the weekend! If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our discussion, L.A. Story is currently streaming for free on the CTV app in Canada at the time of publication. Other works discussed in this episode include the video games Mario & Luigi: Brothership and Balatro, as well as TMNT: Mutant Mayhem, Only The Brave, 24, The Departed, The Nice Guys, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, Jurassic Park, the JJ Abrams Star Trek trilogy, the Disney Star Wars sequel trilogy, A Goofy Movie, Bowfinger, The Lonely Guy, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, Cheaper By The Dozen, The Tooth Fairy and They Came Together. Feb2ary Is For Lovers continues next week as we run it back for another 100 episodes beginning with Nicolas Cage and Cher in 1987's Moonstruck, which may be the most readily available film we've ever covered as it's currently streaming on Amazon Prime, Crave, Starz, Criterion Channel, Tubi and Hoopla as we release this. Thank you so much for listening for 100 episodes, or however long you've been on the ride. We love you, and see you at the movies!!

AARP Angi Might Suffer from Sitting Disease - ATS - 8.7.24

Middle of the week is the perfect way to segway into middle aged (well, maybe a bit older, the way things are sagging on Angi you'd think she's like 110.) This morning, we explored aging up by breaking out the good old Sarah McLachlan to backdrop Angi's newest feud. That's right, it's Angi vs. the USPS but not for reasons you would assume (and by that I mean it's more delusional than you could probably imagine.) Her ire was spawned from a (incorrect) belief that her mail people are trolling her because after checking the mail for the first time in 5 days, 13 of the 17 pieces of mail were from AARP. On the cover of this month's issue (I'm assuming they come monthly, old people like Angi die pretty fast so they need to pump those things out in short order,) was Kevin Costner (who was probably complaining how he lost his house financing a garbage project.) While crying that she didn't want to learn about how to fight "sitting disease," she then turned her ire from the post office to imaginary people who signed her old ass up for it. Of course, in a rare moment of lucidity in her early onset brain, it dawned on her that she may have actually signed up for it because of discounts. Though she hooted and hollered how she didn't want AARP and wasn't ready for it (see: she is,) she then found an article about puzzles and ways to help sugar cravings. Of course, we were back in the red once she stumbled upon the lightest mobility scooter (for those of you wondering, yes she was thumbing through the magazine on air, hence these weird jumping points.) Marris added that perhaps we should look into a mobility scooter because the last time she got on something with wheels, she almost fell into the Chicago River. We moved on then to an article on Marilu Henner and Jewel, who has great cans according to Angi. As Marris tried to explain to her that some of this stuff could be helpful, Angi turned more pages and yelled about tightrope artists and mariachi bands (I don't know if that was in the magazine or if she was having a senior moment.) After then going on about how she doesn't want to read articles from AARP (while reading articles from AARP,) she returned once again to blaming the postal workers for this nonsense. Marris, again attempting to be the world's best orderly when it comes to dealing with early onset patients, said she does have her supper at 4 or 5 P.M. because she's usually in bed by like 7. Somehow, this led us back to sitting disease (I know all of this reads like a jumbled mess but this is how it was on air so don't yell at me!) and how it diminishes brain function (like we have more room for that with her.) Then we were back to Kevin Costner again before settling on Angi probably needing a life alert bracelet and The Clapper as she tends to fall a lot since she's older than the first submarine (1620.)

Hal Linden Live on Game Changers with Vicki Abelson Does it get better than this? Someone's gonna have to prove it to me. Wow, what a time with Hal Linden! As nice, charming, handsome, and tall (well, I'm guessing on the last), as his Barney Miller, Hal was all that and a hefty bag of Cheetos. Absolutely age-defying - I want to see his birth certificate. It's unfathomable that he's 93. Still dashing, his voice strong, mind sharp, wit crackling, and his talent will be on display next weekend in Flat Rock, co-starring with Marilu Henner in Ed Weinberger's, The Journals of Adam and Eve. I wanna go! Road trip? Hal took us through his early days, one of six cousins, all professional musicians, he a clarinetist first, classically trained, in the musicians union at 15, then the sax called, a hysterical story there, the army, and then the theatre… to hear Hal tell it, it all makes sense. From summer stock to Broadway as an understudy in Bells Are Ringing with Judy Holliday. I won't dare ruin that story. It was 8 years of understudying, and standing in, which led to his Tony-winning starring role in The Rothschilds. Please do yourself a favor and watch Hal sing “Sons,” as seen on the Ed Sullivan Show, his clear ticket to Tony. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnztP3vCRko Breathtaking. And then we got to the meat. Barney Miller. How he got it, what he gave up. The gamble he took. The payoff. We talked the original cast in the first failed pilot and the magical one that replaced it. We talked characters, chemistry, and process. How much Hal was in Barney, how much Barney in Hal. And, the part he turned down afterward, without even looking. We had two degrees of Kevin Bacon without the Kevin and without the Bacon, all over the place… from our Bronx beginnings to raising our kids on the UWS of Manhattan and then LA, to Marilu and Ed, but most of all, the Catskills and the crooner. Hal started out in the Borscht Belt with his band at the Paramount Hotel. My father started out at the same hotel as an MC. Years later, after Hal's Broadway and TV fame, my dad lived a dream, introducing Hal, one of his heroes, and opening for him at the Yiddish Theatre in New York. It was one of the highlights and great joys of his career. They were both handsome as heck, charming as can be, and smooth as silk singers. Hal still is. My dad is up there smiling this eve. Larry Katz, this one's for you. Thank you, Hal. This will go down as one of the highlights and great joys of my career, and I'll forever be grateful. But why on a bad hair day?!? When Francis Ford Coppola hired German auteur Wim Wenders to direct his first American film, little did he suspect the difficulty that film would have getting to screens.  The movie was Hammett, a fictionalized account of the mystery writer Dasheill Hammett's second career as a private investigator.  In real life, Hammett stuck to penning noirs but in Wenders' film he's enlisted to solve the disappearance of a San Francisco woman.  The film was entirely reshot on sound stages after Orion Pictures expressed dissatisfaction with Wenders expansive shot-on-location first edit.  It stars Frederic Forrest, Peter Boyle, Marilu Henner, Lydia Lei and Elisha Cook Jr. Dan and Vicky discuss the much maligned film along with plenty of recently seen including El Conde, Madam Web, The Color Purple, Nyad, Rustin, The Zone of Interest, Imaginary, and the Dune films.
