Live television is all about high risk, high reward. Whether it's musical performances, awards ceremonies, sports events, or comedy shows, there's an electric charge to watching something as it's happening. Today, we're debating the greatest moments of live television in pop culture - including a viral news blooper, John Travolta's "Adele Dazeem" flub at the Oscars, Kanye stating "George Bush doesn't care about Black people", and The Beatles making their debut on The Ed Sullivan Show.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
It is our usual end of year top 10 lists! We break down the biggest and best of 2004 & 2014, from Adele Dazeem to Usher, Mean Girls to the Ice Bucket Challenge, 1989 to Facebook and a whole bunch in between. Join us as you ring in the Holidays and as we start a new year!
Originally recorded September 1, 2024. It's possible that without the immense success of Frozen, this musical would've likely flown below the radar. But alas, this Adele Dazeem led opus composed by the Next To Normal crew remains popular to this day, with its soaring numbers and interesting if not a little muddied plot. Does it still deserve accolades? Well 'If' it does 'Then' we'll let you know.
This past week, on August 23rd, the world (A.K.A. musical theater nerds) recognized the anniversary of the passing of Oscar Hammerstein II, one of Broadway's most renowned contributors. So to honor Mr. Hammerstein in our own, special ThWAT way, here's Rob's episode all about the age in which Hammerstein ruled supreme: the Golden Age of Musical Theater. Enjoy!~~~Long before the barricades of Les Mis arose, before Adele Dazeem defied gravity, and before Mr. Alexander Hamilton took his shot, musical theatre in America had already emerged from one of the most formative and productive periods in theatre history. It only lasted 21 years, but those years gave the public such an expansive slate of shows and groundbreaking performances that it would take a professional historian to summarize in a single podcast episode. Lucky for you, one of our hosts has a career teaching and lecturing about the history of musical theatre!Penn State's very own Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre, Mr. Rob W. Schneider, teaches Ray all about the Golden Age of American Musical Theater which spanned from 1943 to 1964; how Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma pushed the musical comedy into brand new territory; which musical accomplished the rare feat of winning the 1950 Pulitzer Prize for Drama; why Cole Porter had to be on his game when writing for Ethel; Rex Harrison's backstage drama; and whether the current state of musical theatre qualifies as a “second” Golden Age.If you like what we're doing, please support us on Patreon, or you can subscribe to our bonus content on Apple Podcasts. Cinderella (2021) (feat. Gleek of the Week) We're continuing Cinderella month with the #girlboss version of the HBIC. It's Amazon Prime's Cinderella (2021) starring Camila Cabello, the wickedly talented Adele Dazeem and, of course, James Corden as a mouse. We're joined by Andrew, host of Gleek of the Week, to talk about this very Glee-coded, jukebox musical fairytale film. We consider what the true meaning of Cinderella's tale really is, critique this Cindy's fashion design skills, and do a lot of real-time research on mouse genitals, the Oscars fan vote, and the waves of feminism. Happy Hondadays! It's our last episode of 2023, and Matt, Chloe, and Frank are here to provide a look back on Week 15 of the NFL season, as well as a look back on the hoopers and poopers of the year of our Lorde 2023. It's our first ever award show! Topics include a lengthy discussion of Draymond Green, as well as an unexpected nomination for the Pope. Frank also has a colossal and embarrassing brain fart, sort of like when John Travolta said Adele Dazeem! It's a great episode and you're great for listening.ALSO: Our very own Chloe Mikala has been nominated by the Chicago Reader for best stand up comic, and her comedy group My Best Friend is Black is also nominated for best comedy show. If you have a minute, vote here to show her some love!
Once again we welcome back trendsetter and Buzzer record smasher Mark Monstroski for a follow up to the episode that originally set the Buzzer record (and we liked that one). This week, Alan, Quinta, and Scott were joined for a special episode by the most glamorous of RatSec co-hosts emeritus, Shane Harris, to hand out some Academy Awards for events in national security over the past year. The nominees include:For “Best Make-Up” (i.e., what was the year's most memorable apology?):The Biden administration's confession that its balloon bombardment was a bust;Kevin McCarthy's ongoing Mar-a-Lago mea culpa;Former British Prime Minister Liz Truss's resignation over her positively wilting economic plan. For “Best Score” (i.e., who came away as the year's most unexpected winner?):Western Europe, whose uncharacteristic balminess helped it weather the winter without Russian energy imports; The F-22, which got its first kill (of a Chinese spy balloon) even as the U.S. military debates whether to discontinue it;China, whose late role in the Saudi-Iran rapprochement allowed it to seize much of the credit. For “Best Supporting Actor” (non-state actor, that is) (i.e., which non-governmental figure had the most oversized role on the national security stage this year?):Comic book villain Elon Musk;Manic pixie jury foreperson Emily Kohrs;Tucker Carlson, the only man who has gotten less credible since he stopped wearing a bowtie. For “Best Actor” (i.e., which world leader left their mark on the world stage this past year?): Volodymyr Zelensky, the man who stayed;Vladimir Putin, who seems intent on doubling down on his failing gambit in Ukraine;Xi Jinping, who locked down his control of the Chinese Communist Party—but perhaps not the Chinese people. Once again, the wickedly talented Adele (Dazeem) returns to the show with a big ol' stankin hit that absolutely destroyed the charts and forced Billboard to rebuild from nothing. Unfortunately, to hear this song Andrew and Dan must travel to a famously very bad year that actually was the reason for all the bad things have ever happened on earth. But this is what we do in order to say...Hello!
The 2010s were so fire, so lit, and so cringe, we just had to revisit our five-part series looking at the decade. In the 2010s, we had good times, probably, and bad times too, and pop culture was there to get us through it all. The Pop Culture Junkie Podcast is again bringing you the most memorable moments of the years 2010 through 2019 with our series We Love the 2010s. This week, Alex, Hayley, Nicole and Shauna give their hot takes on the years 2014 and 2015. 2014 was the year of Gone Girl power: we were ‘All About that Bass' and took a trip to Broad City; Sony got hacked and so did Apple, leading to some TMI leaks; this is the year we met Adele Dazeem, John Wick, and that hot mugshot guy, and couples who just met ended up married for a reality TV show; and finally this is the year we said “Hands up; don't shoot” and ‘Turn Down for What'? The prompt for every episode description reads, "what else do you want your listeners to know?" Well, today, we are taking that literally. We'd LIKE you to know that Wicked is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman. It is based on the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which is based on the characters and setting of the 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. The original production of Wicked premiered on Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre in October 2003. Its original stars included Adele Dazeem as Elphaba, Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda, and Joel Grey as the Wizard. The original Broadway production won three Tony Awards and seven Drama Desk Awards, while its original cast album received a Grammy Award. We've been dreaming of a true love's kiss and this movie that tries to have it both ways with princess tropes. It is, however, enchanting, as is Adele Dazeem, who inexplicably doesn't sing in this movie at all (Kitt has some studio notes about that). The movie is still incredibly white and straight, even for 2007. Nominations for Patrick Dempsey's nickname: McBoring? McDiva? Soooo..... this happened. We won't lie, we originally were gonna have Savages premiere this week. But schedules got mixed up and we unfortunately had to spend 12 minutes of our lives talking about Travolta being extremely cringey in real life as opposed to being cringey in movies. Oh and by the way, this is all Goldie Hawn's fault.
The 2010s…what a decade, right? There were good times, probably, and bad times too, and pop culture was there to get us through it all. The Pop Culture Junkie Podcast is looking back at the halcyon days between 2010 and 2019 with a five-part series we're calling We Love the 2010s. This week, Alex, Hayley, Nicole and Shauna take a look at the years 2014 and 2015.2014 was the year of Gone Girl power: we were ‘All About that Bass' and took a trip to Broad City; Sony got hacked and so did Apple, leading to some TMI leaks; this is the year we met Adele Dazeem, John Wick, and that hot mugshot guy, and couples who just met ended up married for a reality TV show; and finally this is the year we said “Hands up; don't shoot” and ‘Turn Down for What'?In 2015, the Force Awakened, and it apparently ruined a lot of childhoods; Hamilton! turned dry American history into Broadway gold; there was a shakeup in late night talk, and one left-hand shark had us all awkwardly dancing. Fifty Shades of Grey (the movie) had us awkwardly admitting we wanted to see it, and we were either Netflix and Chilling or Whipping and Nae Naeing. And finally, one picture of a dress had everyone questioning how differently we all could perceive the world.Thank you to Olympus Games, the home of the Pop Culture Junkie Podcast.Soundbite credits for 2014: Gone Girl | 20th Century Fox“Meghan Trainor: ‘All About That Bass' Doesn't Skinny Bash” | Today Show/NBC NewsBroad City | 3 Arts Entertainment / Comedy Central“GMA Takes the Stage for the Ice Bucket Challenge” | Good Morning America/ABC News“Hollywood Hacked” | NBC News“‘Handsome' Felon Goes Viral” | ABC News‘”Hands Up, Don't Shoot' Protests Sweep Nation” | USA TodayJohn Wick | LionsgateJohn Travolta introduces Adele Dazeem | Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences“How Did a Mass Celebrity Photo Hack Happen” | ABC NewsSoundbite credits for 2015:“Rihanna's ‘Bitch Betta Have My Money' Producer, Deputy, Tells Us How He Made The Track” | MTV News“Jon's Big Announcement” | The Daily Show/ Comedy CentralStar Wars: The Force Awakens | Disney“Hamilton‘s Lin Manuel-Miranda on Broadway Hype” | ABC News“September Event 2014” | Apple“Katy Perry's Pepsi Super Bowl XLIX Halftime Show” | NFL“What's Up with Netflix & Chill” | The Real/Telepictures ProductionsFifty Shades of Grey | Focus Features/Universal PicturesSchitt's Creek | Canadian Broadcasting CorporationBack to the Future Part II | Universal Pictures“The Dress That Broke the Internet Explained” | ABC NewsLinks:Get the Clubhouse app and get up in the house with your favorite Junkies.Apple Podcast:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/pop-culture-junkie/id1536737728Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/show/7k2pUxzNDBXNCHzFM7EL8WWebsite: www.popculturejunkie.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/PopCultureJunkiePodcastTwitter: @PopJunkiesInstagram: @pop.culturejunkiesEmail: junkies@popculturejunkie.comAlex on Instagram: @alcasnunAlex on Twitter: @alcasnunAlex on Rapchat: @al-xHayley on Instagram: @thirtynerdythrivingHayley on Twitter: @thirtynerdypodHayley on TikTok: @thirtynerdythrivingNicole on Instagram: @nicole_eldridgeNicole on Twitter: @naeldridge14Nicole on TikTok: @nicole_eldridgeShauna on Twitter: @shaunatrinidadShauna on Instagram: @shaunatrinidad

Joshua and Dan, heartbroken upon learning this week's show is not in fact an autobiographical play about our hosts, watch Neil Simon's classic The Odd Couple anyway. Much like these characters, our hosts jab and prod away as they dreamcast their fantasy productions (including their own), Adele Dazeem-ify some names, and discuss how Neil Simon's plays hold up to a 21st century theatregoing audience. Women Tell All is a strange phenomenon of a show. One might surmise that a DVR which touts 120-minuets of ladies sharing all the things is television just begging to be watched. One might be wrong. The good news is that the producers set the bar really high with a theatrical rose ceremony worthy of our time. Is Madison going to join her fellow contestants at the Home Depot pillar? Or will she traipse off into the shire looking for lords and rings? And then there’s the announcement of our new bachelorette and the rumbling of “who’s that girl?” that shook the inter webs. Allow me to help you out: The year was 2014. It was a simpler time back then. Coldplay and Goop made a conscious decision to uncouple. We finally learned how that guy met those kids’ mother. Adele Dazeem killed it at the Golden Globes singing “Let It Go.” And Clare Crawley crossed a freshly sprayed asphalt driveway as she walked toward bachelor Juan Pablo in a darling hot pink party dress. Gather that raccoons, ABC Intern. We’re in for a wild ride. And I couldn’t be more excited. EPISODE NOTES: If you’d like to read Peter’s Women Tell All recap, I’ve got it right HERE! Hint hint, it’s more than you’d think, and if you thought the Indie Spirits gave us one group of indie film darlings, this show represented another. Graham Norton was announced as the new host for this year’s BAFTA’s, and we reminisce over the MI: Fallout promotional campaign. Then we react to the first reactions to 1917, as it enters the Oscar Race as a possible contender for one of the technical categories, and we quote some friends of the show for their superlatives. We continue to get conflicting information on the Feature Documentary category. Soooo…. what else is new? The Documentary Award nominations from the Producers Guild of America give us some of the usual nominees, and then a few surprises. We take a moment to enjoy the Clio Entertainment Awards winners to celebrate the best marketing campaigns on the year, and then we discuss the second trailer for Honey Boy. To close the episode, we’re all about our Make The Case segment. We confirm a case against Where’d You Go Bernadette, which dropped on VOD this past week. Mike 1 drags a few first reactions from Also Mike regarding Knives Out, and then we dive into Frozen II. We talk about the fandom, the themes, and some other heart warming implications this new blockbuster has had on the Thanksgiving box office. Then we each make the case for & against the film as a potential Oscars nominee, even though we both know it’s gonna be there. To complete the segment, we do a quick Snubbable vs Unsnubbable about the candidacy of “Into The Unknown,” and how polarized people are about the new song from Adele Dazeem herself. Disney's Oscar-winning 2013 cultural sensation "Frozen," that created ear-worm songs for annoyed parents everywhere, is already considered a classic piece of Disney animation, rivaling the likes of "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Lion King," and has critics and moviegoers spewing nonsense about how its message is progressive and fresh when it's actually regressive and spoiled. The flimsy, sloppy, incoherent plot is as follow: When their kingdom becomes trapped in perpetual winter, Princess Anna (voiced by Kristen Bell) joins forces with ice salesman Kristoff (voiced by Jonathan Groff) and his reindeer sidekick to find Anna's sister, Snow Queen Elsa (voiced by Adele Dazeem, er, Idina Menzel), to try and break her icy spell that she accidentally cast on everyone. Although their journey leads them to encounters with kidnapping trolls, an undead snowman (creepily voiced Josh Gad), harsh conditions, and magic at every turn, Anna and Kristoff push onward in a race to save their kingdom from winter's cold grip. Um, yeah. We also get a fair share of Nordic stereotypes, skitzo characters, catchy songs that make no sense contextually to the plot, and unearned villainous turns. Join us as Keating talks about how Olaf haunts his dreams, we realize Jim’s amazing ability to point out when characters look like Ron Jeremy, and as we discuss Brad Pitt’s former plans to create the 9/11 Memorial. Happy 2018, everybody! Do you...want to build a snowman? For the first Missing Frames episode of the new year, Sarah gets first movie pick, and in honor of the snowstorms and frigid weather that has graced the U.S., she chose the popular animated Disney flick Frozen, which Shawn has never seen. Believe it or not, Frozen is the highest grossing animated film of all time, and thanks to its memorable soundtrack and characters, it appears poised to go down as a classic. But is it really that good? Shawn and Sarah discuss what they liked/disliked about the movie and whether or not the soundtrack is its true star. This could indeed be the official FINAL word on Frozen, so don't miss it!This episode is dedicated to the memory of Adele Dazeem, the favorite singer/songwriter of so many. Julia (Clint's co-host for our new releases spinoff On Tap) joins us this week to check another movie off Jared's wishlist - the quirky John Travolta vehicle Michael! Fresh off his Pulp Fiction success, Travolta leapt straight into this schmaltzy Nora Ephron rom-com, which gave him license to go full Adele Dazeem on a group of tabloid reporters (including William Hurt and Andie Macdowell) hoping to get a picture of a real-life angel - with wings and everything! It's kitschy and more than a little self-indulgent (the whole thing's clearly a Travolta vanity project), but it's certainly got its charms. Check out our review, along with our custom cocktail and drinking game! (Thanks to our sponsor Cards Against Humanity as part of the Chicago Podcast Coop!) Carrie is happily back with Aidan. What could go wrong? The archaic technology that is the answering machine, that's what! One call from Big mid-coitus is enough to turn Aidan into quite the prickly pear, which is a side of Aidan we don't see often, and let's be honest, it's kind of sexy. While Charlotte is busy "choosing her choice" Miranda throws her neck out, and Samantha fucks some asshole who tells her what to do with her pubes. He's a piece of tepid garbage. Alec and Kat are once again joined by the WICK-edly talented Adele Dazeem, er, Stephanie Barnes for this episode, and if you think it isn't any good, you have to forgive us. You HAVE to forGIVE us. YOU HAVE TO FORGIVE US, AIDAN. Follow us on Instagram and Twitter Check out Stephanie's website! And don't forget to rate and review us on iTunes!
This week we have Jessica Svendsgaard from the musical improv team Adele Dazeem. We talk about: A family whose truck went down in a flood and the strangers who saved their children’s lives. We may be moving towards a less disposable economy! People are making more and buying less (outside of the US of course). There is some good news about product packaging! And the company Braskem from Brazil is working towards creating a sustainable economy and researching renewable resources. The fundraiser of the week is on indiegogo and puts forth the idea of collecting illegal guns from non-violent criminals in exchange for bail. This is being developed as a way to reduce violent crimes and get illegal firearms out of the streets. Jessica is from Danville, CA and an art exhibition is opening up showcasing art from members of the Down Syndrome Connection. Jessica loves birds and I have a great animal corner about a man who has created a retirement home for birds. Another week and a new episode - we're on a hot streak! We've had some time to digest our thoughts on this year's Academy Awards. Apparently reading the wrong name at the right time can really liven up a show that couldn't even be saved by mid-show candy and an adorable convict named Gary. Aidan discusses the pros and cons of new phones and relationships (quit bragging already!)and Jas discovers a pop culture Jeff Sessions look-a-like! Subscribe, sit back and share with the Busy Phillips to your Michelle Williams.
Anthony Rapp (RENT, @AlbinoKid) joins the ladies to discuss Adele Dazeem, RENT, introverts, If/Then, fan gifts and more!
Singer and actor Josh Groban has sold over 25 million records and performed with legends like Sting, Celine Dion and Barbra Streisand, which is why it was so surprising that he allowed Gilbert and Frank into his home to interview him. In an animated and laugh-filled discussion, Josh shares his passion for comedy, his affection for the "Problem Child" movies and his memories of guest-starring on "The Office" and "Ally McBeal." Also, Josh coins a catch phrase, tackles the role of Tevye (at age 17!), mimics Jay Leno and duets with "Adele Dazeem." PLUS: "The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T."! Gladys Knight & The Pips! "The Beastmaster"! Old Groucho returns! And Josh sings "the hits" of Gilbert Gottfried! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
I could copy and paste from her IMDb biography, but then why even bother with talking with the super lovely and talented Adele Dazeem? Wait, wrong teleprompter damnit! Seriously, this is the one and only SARAH SEEDS, an actress, producer and writer originally from Baltimore - and other points South, which we talk about - and how she fell in love with acting at the age of 3(!) and has gone on to become a rising figure in comedy and dramas, from shorts, webseries, improv, and indie features, including the upcoming HEAVEN IS NOW. And, while we're at it, what's up with Gluten? You can see her in Riding the D with Dr Seeds (Teaser - CLICK ON LINK AND SUBSCRIBE TO WHOLE SERIES): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwCQQQpFNLI Currently in WILDCATS (this is the episode we reference/include a clip of, but watch all of them on Vimeo): https://vimeo.com/124109906 And her reel: https://vimeo.com/102294056 Follow her on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sarahseedsofficial and on Twitter @SarahSeeds plus of course www.sarahseeds.com for all the things going on with her! ("The Forger").
From the week Madonna fell backwards at the Brits (obviously we have that clip), and, we also have Russell Crowe with his unfeasibly deep voice from the same show. Plus from the Oscars, Graham Moore's beautiful acceptance speech. John Travolta explains 'The Truth' About His Oscar Flub, "Adele Dazeem" Also hear the Britney Spears spoof choon and mashup, while Christina Aguilera sings this little piggy in the style of Britney. Finally, from Gogglebox Sandra & Sandy on push up bra's along with Stephen and Chris on Squirrels. WARNING may contain belches
From John Travolta Face/Off-ing Adele Dazeem to Eddie Redmayne's giddy speech, we cover the highs and the lows of the 87th Academy Awards.
Louisville is looking pretty good this week! We recently got a 66% on the Human Rights Campaign's Municipal Equality Index—higher than the national average of 59%, and the highest rating of any city in Kentucky. The index looks at factors like non-discrimination laws, domestic partner benefits, openly gay elected officials, and more, and largely finds cities leading the way in the US, while states sometimes lag behind. This week we're joined by Cathryn Oakley of the HRC, who tells us more about the methodology, and how this year's study compares to previous years. In Juicy Fruit, we cover more Louisville news: WFPL health reporter Ja'Nel Johnson sits in to tell us about an encouraging story from the University of Louisville medical school. It will be the first med school in the nation to include specific instruction on treating LGBTQ patients. In other hot (and medical) topics, an employee of Norton Healthcare was fired after her racist facebook post went viral (including a share from our own Jaison Gardner, who was mentioned in the subsequent media coverage). Toni Morrison has a new novel coming out in the Spring, and last week was also the anniversary of James Baldwin's death, so we spend some time this week showing respect to these legends of Black literature and discussing the significance of their works. And finally, the Wall Street Journal's arts & entertainment blog, The Speakeasy, released its list of The 15 Best Pop Culture Moments of 2014. Some we totally got (the Oscar selfie, "Adele Dazeem," Pharrell's hat), and others we barely even registered this year (President Obama on Between Two Ferns, Katy Perry dressing as a Cheeto, something about Sharknado 2?). We didn't have time to include it all in this week's show, so the pop culture moments conversation is bonus fruit this week: https://soundcloud.com/strangefruitpod/bonus-fruit-the-wall-street-journals-15-best-pop-culture-moments-of-2014

This week's Podcast features just Stu and Luke as everyone else has abandoned us. I should warn you now, the hysteria hits early and just gets worse. It's either the greatest thing we've ever created or the absolute worst. Topics up for discussion range from the announcement of Arkham Knight, The Oscar winners and losers, and also why we seem to be inundated with next-gen remakes. It also goes slightly off-piste around the time that Stuart reveals Adele Dazeem is in the throes of divorce and Luke pretty much loses his sh**. It's still unclear at this time if he will ever fully recover. Also Stuart put all the cables in right for once, so we have a video version once more! We even did some visual trickery on you, getting Luke to sit closer to the camera so he looks normal sized and not like a Dwarf. We learned that one by watching the extras on The Fellowship of the Ring. Also if you're looking for the picture Luke mentions about Travolta and Cumberbatch it's here. So watch or listen you lucky things, and we'll see you next week!
Long live Adele Dazeem!! The Oscars were this weekend so we talk about them out of mostly obligation, but the real stories are with our own Rob Yulfo and Pat Ryan coming out with brand new creative content! Rob's got a new animated short and Pat has just started a Sci-Fi radio show series (both embedded here). We also talk about painted movie posters, Bill Waterson's new "comic", the documentary on the Rhythm & Hues bankruptcy and the VFX issue as a whole. This one was recorded in one long shot and I didn't go back to remaster anything because Rob again... has computer issues. We literally recorded this 3 hours prior to me typing this. So... enjoy!!
