In the early years of professional basketball, before the bright lights and global reach of today's NBA, the game was held together by grit, geography, and a patchwork of teams fighting to survive. Few franchises capture that fragile, formative moment better than the Tri-Cities Blackhawks — a team that didn't just represent one city, but an entire region straddling the Mississippi River. In this episode, we're joined by author Don Doxsie, whose book "Tri-City Blackhawks: A Turbulent History of a Pioneering NBA Team" serves as both our guide and our lens into this overlooked chapter of basketball history. Based in Moline, Rock Island, and Davenport, the Blackhawks were a product of the industrial Midwest and the now-defunct National Basketball League. They played a bruising, defense-first style, developed standout players, and, for a brief moment, stood toe-to-toe with the best teams of their era. But as pro basketball rapidly evolved — culminating in the 1949 merger that created the modern NBA — the realities of a small, fragmented market began to close in. Through Doxsie's reporting and perspective, we explore the team's promising early seasons, its mounting financial and competitive pressures, and the instability that ultimately led to its relocation. It's a story of reinvention as much as decline — one that would eventually see the franchise evolve into today's Atlanta Hawks, but only after leaving the Tri-Cities behind. Along the way, Doxsie brings to life the personalities, league politics, and day-to-day realities of running a team on the margins of a sport still struggling to define itself. + + +    SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable The "Good Seats" Store: http://tee.pub/lic/RdiDZzQeHSY BUY THE BOOK:  "Tri-City Blackhawks: A Turbulent History of a Pioneering NBA Team": https://amzn.to/42x6Cvm SPONSOR THANKS:  Royal Retros (10% off promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2 Old School Shirts.com (10% off promo code: GOODSEATS): https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats FIND AND FOLLOW: Linktree: https://linktr.ee/GoodSeatsStillAvailable Web: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/goodseatsstillavailable.com X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/good-seats-still-available/

Adventures in Americana presents Smouse in the House

Born, raised, and currently based in the Midwest, Elisabeth Corrin Maurus—aka Lissie—has been making music since she was a child in Rock Island, Illinois. Having followed Lissie from her very first album, host Tom Smouse found it surreal to sit in her home, looking at the Gold record of Catching a Tiger on the wall. You can tell that she's a natural storyteller as her memories of travels and prior homes all add importance and weight to her songs. In their chat, Lissie shares her struggles as a solo artist and how putting in the hard work and learning how to network and collaborate has helped her succeed and sustain longevity for nearly 20 years. Lissie has accomplished so much while still continuing to stoke the fire of songwriting and performing.

As the "Official Birthplace of the Fried Onion Hamburger," El Reno turns a Great Depression-era necessity into a world-renowned delicacy. What's on the menu for this episode: The 850-Pound Beast: Discover the engineering marvel behind the world's largest fried onion burger, featuring 250 lbs of beef, 150 lbs of onions, and a custom-baked 350 lb bun. More than Just Meat: From the USTAF Sanctioned Bun Run to the massive car show on Rock Island and the Main Stage music, we cover the full festival experience. The Fried Onion Burger Holy Trinity: While at the fest, you have to visit the legends: Sid's Diner, Robert's Grill, and Johnnie's Hamburgers & Coneys. During the American Civil War an estimated 194,000 Union soldiers and 214,000 Confederate soldiers became prisoners of war. No prior or subsequent American conflict has seen such numbers. During the Second World War, approximately 124,000 Americans were held captive, but the chance of being captured in that conflict was roughly one in one hundred; during the Civil War it was closer to one in five. Captivity was not a marginal experience. It was central to the war.Indeed, the gigantic scale of prisoner-of-war camps was one of the conflict's most consequential innovations. Every modern war since has produced successors to Andersonville, Point Lookout, Rock Island, and Florence. Yet prisoner-of-war camps remain oddly peripheral in our narratives of the Civil War, overlooked both as institutional innovations and as formative experiences for soldiers and their families. My guest, W. Fitzhugh Brundage, argues in A Fate Worse Than Hell: American Prisoners of the Civil War that captivity reshaped military policy, political rhetoric, racial attitudes, and postwar memory. Prison camps were not aberrations; they were integral to the modernizing logic of total war.For more on the guest, show notes, sources, and related episodes, go to the Historically Thinking Substack at www.historicallythinking.orgChaptersIntroduction - 0:00Historical Treatment of POWs - 2:35Parole System and Napoleonic Wars - 4:47Scale and Logistics of Civil War Prisons - 7:42Lincoln's Dilemma: Sovereignty vs Prisoner Exchange - 10:56Andersonville: Conditions and the Deadline - 31:48Point Lookout and Union Prisons - 47:25Prison Society and Community - 57:45Black Prisoners of War - 65:33Elmira Prison and John W. The idea seemed promising. Most of his Rock Island teammates would join Thorpe for a leisurely trip to Texas (and beyond) for a series of games against the locals in each of many cities. It would be both relaxing and an opportunity to meander through several warm locations, with a grand finale in tropical Havana, Cuba. Most important, it would be a great opportunity for Thorpe and the players to earn some easy money by playing the game they loved before thousands of adoring fans eager to sample the unknown world (at the time) of professional football!Unfortunately, none of those promising and attractive ideals came to fruition, except the tour itself…Read the entire episode blog post and check out some other cool info regarding this episode here.WHEN FOOTBALL WAS FOOTBALL BACKGROUNDEach episode takes the listener back to the very early days of the National Football League. In this special episode, we bring you not one, but *two fascinating interviews* recorded live from one of the most haunted and intriguing venues in the Midwest. First, we sit down with **Kay**, an experiencer who has spent much of her life encountering the unexplained. Kay opens up about her **personal paranormal experiences**, from shadow figures and disembodied voices to the strange energies that seem to follow her wherever she goes. Her stories blur the line between the physical and spiritual worlds, and her honesty and calm reflection will make you question what truly lies beyond the veil. Kay's encounters serve as a reminder that sometimes, the most chilling hauntings aren't found in abandoned buildings — they happen to everyday people living ordinary lives. Then, we shift from personal experiences to a chilling location that has captured the attention of investigators everywhere. **Derek from Eternal Paranormal** joins us to discuss his team's research into a deeply haunted location known as the **Sanctum of Souls**, an abandoned church that holds a reputation for intense supernatural activity. From unexplained chanting and shadow masses to the unnerving feeling of being watched, this church has become a magnet for investigators seeking answers to the mysteries of the afterlife. Derek shares not only his team's findings but also the history and theories behind the haunting — from restless spirits to possible darker energies that may linger within its walls. Throughout the episode, Jennifer and Joe reflect on how locations like Rock Island Roadhouse and Sanctum of Souls seem to serve as crossroads between worlds — where emotion, energy, and spirit collide. We also talk about what makes these haunted gatherings so special: the community of believers, skeptics, and seekers who come together to share stories, evidence, and experiences that defy explanation. Whether you're a seasoned investigator, a curious listener, or someone who has experienced the unexplainable yourself, this episode is sure to keep you captivated. As always, we invite you to listen with an open mind and remember — not every haunting happens in the dark; sometimes, the most profound experiences occur in the light of day among those brave enough to share them. So, grab your EMF meter, light a candle, and join us for this week's paranormal journey — **two interviews, two haunting tales, one unforgettable episode**. Tune in, if you dare, as we explore the mysteries of the Rock Island Roadhouse Esoteric Expo — and discover what secrets lie hidden within the **Sanctum of Souls**. Once a lively gathering spot filled with music, laughter, and late-night crowds, the roadhouse has become just as well-known for the spirits that never seemed to leave as it is for its long and colorful past.   In this week's episode of the *222 Paranormal Podcast*, we dive headfirst into the chilling lore, eerie encounters, and paranormal investigations that surround this mysterious landmark. What makes the Rock Island Roadhouse stand out isn't just its vintage character or storied history—it's the countless reports of unexplained activity that continue to this day.   For decades, patrons and staff alike have shared unsettling tales: phantom footsteps echoing across empty rooms, strange cold drafts sweeping through hallways, doors slamming shut on their own, and even full-bodied apparitions appearing in the shadows. Some guests report hearing disembodied voices whispering their names, while others claim to have felt unseen hands brush against their arms. Many investigators have walked into the building expecting just another ghost hunt, only to leave with bone-chilling stories of their own.   But what is it about this location that stirs up so much spiritual energy? Some believe it is tied to the building's long history of music, bar fights, and tragedy—emotions forever imprinted on the walls. Others think the land itself carries an energy that amplifies paranormal activity. The Roadhouse has stood through the passage of time, hosting generations of locals, travelers, and performers, each leaving behind a piece of themselves. Perhaps some of those pieces never fully departed.   During our conversation, we share firsthand accounts of investigations inside the Roadhouse, including startling EVP recordings, strange temperature drops, and unexplained flashes of light caught on camera. We also explore the stories of those who claim to have had life-changing encounters while visiting. Did they meet the spirit of a former bartender? A lost patron who never found their way home? Or perhaps something older, something darker, that predates the roadhouse altogether?   As always, we look at the balance between folklore and fact. Every haunted building carries its legends, but when the same stories are repeated time and time again by unrelated witnesses, we have to wonder—could this be proof that the Rock Island Roadhouse truly is a hotspot for supernatural activity?   Whether you're a seasoned investigator, a curious listener, or someone who just loves a good ghost story, this episode is packed with chilling details and thought-provoking questions. So pour yourself a drink, dim the lights, and join us as we unlock the mysteries of the **Rock Island Roadhouse**, one of the Midwest's most haunted establishments.
