“There are only murderers in this room! Michael! Open your eyes! This is the life we chose, the life we lead. And there is only one guarantee: none of us will see heaven.”April Showers roll on, and this week Henrique and David are heading to Rock Island, Illinois for a rainy, emotionally charged journey into organized crime and father-son bonds. We're diving deep into Sam Mendes' 2002 neo-noir masterpiece Road to Perdition—a film soaked in atmosphere, grief, and some of the most stunning cinematography in modern cinema. Set in 1930s Illinois, Road to Perdition tells the story of a mob enforcer whose son witnesses a murder, launching them on a road trip fueled by vengeance, protection, and ultimately, redemption. Starring Tom Hanks, Paul Newman, and Tyler Hoechlin, with Oscar-winning cinematography by Conrad L. Hall, this film blends brutal violence with heartbreaking beauty—and we're unpacking it all.

RaeAnn Tucker joined Seth Parlier on Wake Up Tri-Counties to talk about what's happening with the Henry and Stark County Health Departments. January is National Birth Defects Month, and the 2025 theme is "Every Journey Matters." This nationwide initiative emphasizes making healthy choices to reduce the risks of birth defects. Pregnant women and those planning pregnancy are advised to take proactive steps such as consuming 400 micrograms of folic acid daily, managing pre-pregnancy weight, and updating vaccinations to promote the birth of healthy babies. Every 4 ½ minutes, a birth defect occurs in the U.S., prompting local health officials to advocate for awareness and preventive practices. First Choice Healthcare Clinics across Kewanee, Colona, Toulon, and Rock Island are making strides in community health through their comprehensive family planning services. These clinics provide crucial support, including annual physical exams featuring breast exams and pap smears, alongside contraceptive services and pregnancy testing. Designed to empower individuals to make informed health decisions, the clinics also assist in the early detection of other health issues, facilitating timely referrals to specialized care. Services are financially accessible, with a sliding fee scale for low-income families and available grant funds for eligible clients. To learn more or book an appointment, visit henrystarkhealth.com. The Henry & Stark County Health Departments, together with First Choice Healthcare, are urging residents to stay proactive about their health as the infectious season may continue until May. They are offering Pfizer's updated Covid-19 vaccines and seasonal flu shots for both adults and children over 6 months old at their clinics in Kewanee, Colona, and Toulon. For COVID-19 vaccinations, appointments are necessary and can be made by contacting the nearest First Choice Healthcare clinic. Flu shots for adults are available on a walk-in basis, while children's flu vaccinations require an appointment. The health departments also recommend regular hand washing, covering your nose and mouth when coughing, and staying home if sick to keep the community healthy during the festive season. For more information, call the First Choice Healthcare Clinics in Kewanee at 309-852-5272; Colona at 309-792-4011; and Toulon at 309-852-3115, or visit our website at www.henrystarkhealth.com; find them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram at Henry and Stark County Health Departments.

What's up, dudes? I've got Ken Kessler from Sounds of Christmas and Scott Leopold from Holly Jolly X'masu here to talk the folksy prog rock band Jethro Tull.  We break down two of the Christmas songs by Jethro Tull: “Jack Frost and the Hooded Crow” and “Another Christmas Song.” The British rock band formed in Blackpool, Lancashire in 1967. Their music is marked by the initially soulful and bluesy, and later expressively idiosyncratic, vocal style and unique lead flute work of frontman Ian Anderson, and their notable guitarist Martin Barre. Of course, their songs feature unusual and often complex construction, incorporating elements of classical and celtic folk music, as well as art rock and alternative rock. They subsequently beat Metallica in the ‘89 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental in what was widely viewed as an upset over the favorite, Metallica's ...And Justice for All. Ian Anderson composed “Jack Frost and the Hooded Crow,” and the band originally recorded it in ‘81 for the Broadsword and the Beast album (although it was left off). The 5/4 metered song is more folk rock-inspired with synthesizers. “Another Christmas Song” was also written by Ian Anderson. The band Included the song on the Rock Island album on side B, and eventually released it as a single on December 4, 1989.  Flute? Yep. Folk and fantasy themes? Uh huh. Heavy metal and hard rock? Nope. Not at all. Sorry. So grab your flute, strike a flamingo pose, and listen to this episode on Jethro Tull “Jack Frost and the Hooded Crow!”Sounds of ChristmasFB: @SOCMusicTwitter: @SOCMusicIG: @socmusicHolly Jolly X'masuFB: @HollyJollyXmasuTwitter: @HollyJollyXmasuIG: @hollyjollyxmasuGive us a buzz! In its 15th year, the Bushels for Hunger Grain Drive continues to make significant impacts in fighting hunger. Farmers across Mercer, Henry, and Rock Island are donating portions of their harvests—corn, grain, and soybeans—to aid the River Bend Food Bank. Over the years, their generosity has translated into more than 1.6 million meals, with contributions amounting to approximately $324,000. The drive will conclude at the end of January 2025, and a press conference is slated to announce this year's total contributions. In addition to grain donations, monetary contributions are also welcomed to further bolster the food bank's resources. These efforts showcase the community's enduring commitment to supporting those in need. In the heart of Rock Island, Illinois, an unassuming old building holds secrets of its storied past. Once known as the local YMCA, it's now a furniture store. But beneath its facade is a place where the past and the paranormal collide. For decades, this building served as a bustling hub for the community, offering solace and recreation to its inhabitants. Yet, as time passed, whispers of hauntings began to circulate, with tales of shadows lurking in the hallways and apparitions making their presence known. Even the former classrooms on the second-floor harbor distinct spirits, while the upper storage spaces, once filled with the belongings of long-term boarders, now echo with ghostly footsteps and mysterious bangs. But perhaps most chilling are the reports of shadowy figures darting from room to room and the unnerving sounds captured in one particular stairwell—a trunk elevator running up the center—an area now infamous for EVP recordings of blood-curdling screams and doors slamming. On this episode of The Grave Talks, Part Two of our conversation about the Haunted Rock Island Roadhouse with Kandi Slater, Event Coordinator.
