You know how some Star Wars charaters are actually hearing the music that's being played a the scene they're in? Well, it turns out there are WAY more songs like that than you ever might have guessed. I'm talking with Jeremy Thorpe today, who's made it his missoin to collect them all. Punch it! NO ENCORE travels to the wilds of County Clare (actually very peaceful, to be honest) for one week only as Dave Hanratty interrupts his time off to jump into a different studio – with the blessing from afar of Sonic Architect Adam, of course. Local boy Daithí returns to the podcast, with his faithful drummer and operations manager Alex Ridley for company. With their powers combined, the trio boot up and download accordingly as they get into the intriguing world of diegetic music in video games. But what does all that mean, you ask? Essentially, any time music is actually in a scene rather than scoring it - something a character interacts with, creates, or is aware of. Yes, it's going to get very nerdy on this episode. ACT ONE: Catching up with all things occurring in the world of Daithí O'Dronaí. ACT TWO (9:08): A rare live music opportunity sees Dave break out the gig calculator, Sabrina Carpenter offends the devout, Metallica take the blood money, Kiss Korner returns in dramatic fashion, The Hives plot world domination, and Eminem goes digital - it's the news. Dan & Paul dive back into AD&D 1st and 2nd Edition for examples of adventures that played out edition-shifts in real-time in the campaign world of the time. Who knew the sound of fueling transports could be so satisfying? Blythe Kala joins me in a lively discussion about minutes 86-90 of The Last Jedi, featuring comedic droid beats, untranslated Wookiee words, and Rey meeting Kylo face-to-face for the first in the whole film. We also talk Rey vs. Kylo vs. Anakin's character motivations, film production tricks, and more. Discussion topics/Highlights: The satisfying sound of the fueling transports (ascending in pitch) Rebel and Resistance themes (strict, military marches) versus Jedi themes (flowy, magical, bigger melodic range). Comedic beats and sound design of BB-8 Droid and Wookiee speech are often left untranslated for the audience, leaving their sound and inflection up to our interpretation. Soldiers of Cinema - Exploring the Works and Philosophies of filmmaker Werner Herzog
We discuss Herzog’s Masterclass Lesson 15 - Sound. Learn from Herzog's mistakes (her couldn't show his first few films to an audience the sound was so bad). Take the time to learn the basics. Be sure to have sound in mind when location scouting. ADR vs. Location sound. Foley. Thinking of sound like a special effect. Diegetic vs. extradiegetic. Going above just the competent recording of sound and adding stylization to your work. Listen for the remarkable.

This week we play Dead Sector, a student game that Blake describes as the “Dark Souls of Deadspace.” We talk about how it combines ideas from both games, as well as which ideas complement each other and which ones feel more dissonant. We admire the game’s art and animations. Diegetic interfaces are complemented. Blake says he “loves to hand ass.” Download the demo here: https://deadsector.itch.io/deadsector And follow the creators on Twitter: @TheDeadSector

Sanjay Chaturvedi, talks about listening in layers and filtering sounds to create some of the most amazing sound designing experiences in Cinema: 1) The culture focuses on checking the pixels of a cellphone but not the microphone quality of a phone 2) Sound is like the yogic system enabling us to see the inner world of stories 3) Diegetic and non-digetic sounds 4) Writers should understand the potentialities of all departments of storytelling 5) 5.1 Dolby vs sounds on OTT platforms 6) casting/ art/.. everything is related to sound 7) 50 percent of the film is sound- but the budgets are skewed towards visuals. 8) #savingprivateryan #gamesofthrone You can follow us and leave us feedback on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter @eplogmedia, For partnerships/queries send you can send us an email at bonjour@eplog.media. Balancing Act is our challenge this episode! Thanks to Emily Kuehn for the challenge! We have no guest this episode. Just Taylor and Rob left alone with the cavernous echoes of their own thoughts. Rob talks about getting duped by an Instagram ad. Maybe. Or maybe he just duped himself. They also talk about the very vaporware-y Star Citizen game and the pitfalls of crowdfunded things. Rob is pretty into the word "diegetic."We also talk about listmaking, productivity, the ever-fascinating KT boundary and the poetry of iPhone file name sequences. Also chop saws, bench dogs and glue scrapers, Figma and GitHub. We also remind ourselves to not dig into our opinions too deeply. Things change. Rob get's right to the point. The guilt was too much to bear. Taylor was on the skids but ended up putting the glow up in his glue up! For our fortieth episode, we’re talking all about Diegetic music in Star Wars. Diegetic music, is the music that both the audience and characters hear, everything from the cantina band to Jedi Rocks. We also discuss some news about Carrie Fisher’s appearance in Star Wars Episode IX, newly released Galaxies Edge details, and more! (more…)
Diegetic musicals. Sarah Watt, Jeremy Downing and William Chen discuss A Star Is Born and Cabaret. We begin by discussing the prowess of both Lady Gaga and Liza Minelli in the opening of each film. We unpack the narrative structure of A Star Is Born, looking at the first and second half, and stylistic throw-backs to other directors, which include Richard Linklater and David O. Russell. We talk about the heightened nature of Cabaret, particularly the sharp cuts that add to the irony in the film, how ominous the film is, and how the film carefully develops character. Our discussion moves to talking about the music and performance in A Star Is Born, how they constructed the live scenes and its treatment of the different music styles. We talk about the artistic choices in Cabaret, with the Emcee being a personification of Berlin and capturing German Expressionism.
Episode 79 of the "Knights of Vader – A Star Wars Podcast!" Zack and Rob discuss the creation of the Knights of Vader theme song, as well as music used throughout the Star Wars saga. Hello and welcome to this very odd episode of the Littlest PetCast. In this episode, we look at the episode "A Day at the Museum", written by Merriwether Williams, and directed by Dallas Parker. In this episode, the park is closed, but the pets really want to play. They spot a lawn to play on but their ball gets lost in the museum. Minka and Penny Ling go into the museum, but get lost in their imagination. Meanwhile, I have lost my mind. Will I ever understand horror people? Should you check out Arika Okrent ( https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSABQ0fvcFJ2hmOkn3F__8Q ) on youtube? If you think something exists with a generic title, what are the chances that it's a flash game? Are all animals pets in this universe? What is real?

Bill and Bill dive into The Lure, a massively entertaining and utterly baffling musical horror riff on The Little Mermaid. We flounder around for a bit but eventually find out legs and discuss the film's dreamlike plotting, clever sound design, and how its strip club setting potentially reflects stereotypes and/or realities of it Eastern European setting.
Between "diegetic" film music (heard by the characters) and "nondiegetic" film music (heard only by the audience) is a paradoxical space called the "fantastical gap." A film such as Inception (2010) makes traversal of this gap into an overt theme, obscuring our sense of place to such a degree that even the literal plot of the movie is open to interpretation, and thus also illustrating the extent to which filmmakers can manipulate an audience's understanding of the filmic world through the blurring of the diegetic/nondiegetic divide.

In the Gaming Hut we examine a classic dichotomy in GMing technique: when do you use the world to nudge the story, and when do you address the players out-of-character?
