In a first for the Camerosity Podcast, we finally dive into the wonderful world of Graflex press cameras and other 4x5 cameras.  If you thought Camerosity only meant 35mm, medium format roll film, and subminis, this is the episode that will shake up everything you know about us! For episode 43, we had a packed house (although there was one significant omission).  Joining the gang on this show was first time caller, and owner of Graflex Parts, Graham Burnett, along with Andy Pham, Daniel Belmes, Eric J, Greg McCreash, Howard Sandler, Jess Hobbs, Marcy Merrill, Mario Piper and his wife Julianne Piper, Mark Faulkner, Nick Marshall, Patrick Casey, and Robert Rotoloni. Together, topics ranging far and wide from the history of Folmer & Schwing, the company who made the first Graphic cameras, to differences between all the models, where to start if you've never shot a Graflex before, development tips, and all sorts of information that people who love these cameras want you to know.  In addition to discussions about Graflex press cameras, we also get into a few other 4x5 cameras like the Busch Pressman and Burke & James versions.  Greg McCreash is back to talk about his massive Combat Graflex, and we even touch upon some of the 35mm Graflex cameras. If you've ever wanted to know something about these wonderful cameras, this is the episode you'll want to hear! As always, the topics we discuss on the Camerosity Podcast are influenced by you!  We would love to hear from more listeners, especially those who are new to shooting film or collecting cameras.  Please don't feel like you have to be an expert on a specific type of camera, or have the level of knowledge on par with other people on the show.  We LOVE people who are new to shooting and are interested in having an episode dedicated to people new to the hobby, so please don't consider your knowledge level to be a prerequisite for joining! The guys and I rarely know where each episode is going to go until it happens, so if you'd like to join us on a future episode, be sure to look out for our show announcements on our Camerosity Podcast Facebook page, and right here on mikeeckman.com.  We usually record every other Monday and announcements, along with the Zoom link are typically shared 2-3 days in advance. The guys and I have had a great time talking about Graflex, Argus, Contax, and Pentax, and for our next episode, we are going to divert a bit from our regular format and just discuss what we've been working on lately and some topics we'd like to share with you all, so there won't be any option to dial in for the next episode.  Maybe we'll still have a special guest for you, maybe not!  You'll just need to stay tuned for that one. We will resume our normal call in for episode 45 though, which we will record on Monday, March 20th.  We don't yet know what we'll talk about then, but be sure to stay tuned for the official announcement!

In this episode I venture into the outside world with my Speed Graphic for the first time. There's me learning stuff, having fun, getting stuff wrong, pulling my hair out (what little is left) and ultimately a happy ending. Its a bit longer than I'd hoped but that happens I guess sometimes when you ramble on without a coherent idea of what you're doing... Apologies for the wind noise in some of the segments. Theres a lot of cursing in this show just to warn the people that care... ------------------------------- ...and who's Stewie you ask? Well, I was reading something about people having names for their large format cameras the other day and I thought it was odd. But I still got to thinking what the Speed Graphic's name might be. I was watching an episode of Family Guy and it occurred to me that the initials SP, Speed Graphic, were the same as Stewie Griffin...therefore Stewie the Speed Graphic. Dumb, but it appears to have stuck. As always please feel free to drop me an email at sootandwhitewash@gmail.com or send me a call in if you'd like to get your voice out on the show! David Burnett is a photojournalist with more than 5 decades of work covering the news, the people, and visual tempo of our age. He is co-founder of Contact Press Images, the New York based photojournalism agency. In an issue of American Photo magazine, Burnett was named one of the "100 Most Important People in Photography." (That made his mom very happy.)   In the spring of 2018, David was awarded the Sprague Award for Lifetime Achievement from the National Press Photographers Assn., though he claims he is trying to figure out what his subsequent 'lifetime' work will be.  In his career, he has created photographs of history unfolding: war, sport, politics, the famous, the infamous, and the Unfamous. In a world gone mad over digital photography, his kit includes a 70-year-old Speed Graphic press camera, and a plastic $30 HOLGA.  Each has a place alongside his digital cameras, each camera a tool to find the right look for the right moment. November 19, 2018 - Our time machine hauls out the big, bulky Speed Graphic camera and watches the ultimate watcher of watchers in 1930s, '40s and '50s New York City: Arthur Fellig. Helping haul the tripod around to various crime scenes and disasters is Christopher Bonanos who brings us Flash: The Making of Weegee the Famous. Even if you don’t know the name, you've seen his gritty images from the 1930s through '50s. It's an incredible body of work produced by a photographer who hammed up claims of an uncanny ability to show up at a crime scene just as the cops did -- a human Ouija board. Christopher Bonanos is city editor at New York magazine where he covers arts and culture and urban affairs. His previous book is Instant: The Story of Polaroid. There were a few audio issues with this episode. Please bear with us through the pops, scratches, and bangs. The boys start off with a discussion of the ins and outs of leaving cameras in your car during hot weather (00:00) and Nick explains why he wants a camera like a bar of soap (13:00). They continue the discussion of the travel camera they started in the last episode (14:40). Graham can’t remember the name of the Olympus Trip 35 and felt like a fool for forgetting (23:50). He then redeems himself with a reconfiguring of the body of a travel 35mm camera on the model of the film cartridge backs of medium format cameras (28:20). Graham talks about Graham (another one, better known as Chickenthumbs on Instagram) 41:45. Graham blathers on and on about his Flex-O-Pan at 58:00 so you’ll probably want to skip ahead to the good stuff, like the next episode of Photography Matters with Ted Viera. The talk turns to a Kickstarter campaign to create a digital sensor that drops into a standard 35mm camera and how that could be the source of sensors for digital camera builds (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1374923168/film-35-innovative-photography-experience) (1:29:00). Nick sends a shout out to Ralph Lundval (1:53:20) and the images he posted using an enlarger lens and a Speed Graphic.
