In the history of the 20th century photo industry, there have been countless cameras made by countless companies from countless countries. Of all those cameras, one subset of film photography seems to appeal to a larger number than most, the 35mm half-frame camera. Originally the only size for still photography on 35mm film, single frame fell out of favor after World War II, but saw a huge resurgence in the 1960s with half-frame models being released by nearly every company who made cameras. In this, the 49th episode of the Camerosity Podcast, Anthony, Theo, Paul, and Mike welcome first time and returning callers, Ray Nason, Brian Howard, Phil C., Keir Frei, Maxwell Whitaker, Richard Diver, Roger Coats, and Sean Mahan to share with us their favorite half-frame models. Mike can't help himself and gives a brief (for him) history of half-frame and why it was originally called 'single frame', we ponder what exactly qualifies as half-frame, should 4.5cm x 6cm medium format or 24mm x 24mm square format cameras count? A huge amount of time is spent on the Olympus Pen series and a huge number of 35mm half-frame models by Ricoh, Konica, Yashica, Ansco, Minolta, Pentacon, Canon, Taron, Petri, and others. As is the case with many episodes, we get off topic a bit and venture into square frame 35mm with the likes of the Berning Robot, Zeiss-Ikon Tenax, and Bolta Photavit cameras. Of course we come back, only to get off topic again talking about Rapid and Karat film cassettes. We start on a slippery slope of what Gen Z looks for in photography today and briefly touch upon why anyone would want to shoot the new Kodak H35 and similar cameras. As always, the topics we discuss on the Camerosity Podcast are influenced by you! We would love to hear from more listeners, especially those who are new to shooting film or collecting cameras. Please don't feel like you have to be an expert on a specific type of camera, or have the level of knowledge on par with other people on the show. We LOVE people who are new to shooting and are interested in having an episode dedicated to people new to the hobby, so please don't consider your knowledge level to be a prerequisite for joining! The guys and I rarely know where each episode is going to go until it happens, so if you'd like to join us on a future episode, be sure to look out for our show announcements on our Camerosity Podcast Facebook page, and right here on mikeeckman.com. We usually record every other Monday and announcements, along with the Zoom link are typically shared 2-3 days in advance. It is hard to believe, but the next episode of the Camerosity Podcast will be our 50th! Way back in 2021, there was this crazy idea to create a Podcast in the style of an AM/FM Radio Talk Show in which listeners could call in during a live recording and ask questions or talk about whatever they wanted. The first two episodes of this show were done with little more than an hour's notice and between those two episodes, spawned 47 more episodes, eventually making us not only the number one open source film photography podcast, but one of the fastest growing podcasts of any format. It's Jeff week here at Sunny 16 Towers (which is coincidentally Jeff's nickname) after the I Dream Of Cameras star (co-star) made a flash trip to the UK to buy a fancy camera, drink some fancy beer in the sun with Ade, make prints and drink pints with Rachel, visit burial grounds and television sets and probably drink who knows what with Clare, and drink Lemonade and get shown the way out by Graeme - what a week! Is Jeff as nice as he comes across in his podcast? Is the Xpan the answer to all of life's questions? Does Gabe just not like us enough to travel half way around the world? Some of these questions will be answered, some you can figure out for yourselves, only on Jeff Week here at Sunny 16! Title for this show provided by Ade. Alternative titles included "Jeffs-on-an Airplane". "Four Welcomes and a Fuji-clone" and "The Perils of Poor Impulse Control"

Hey everybody, welcome to this week's podcast with me your host the Phlogger. As I explore this medium of photography and play around I become interested in many areas. One of these that always springs to mind is a double exposure. I remember when running my competitions with Kodak Alaris that there was a few multi-exposure entries. In fact, one of them by Ben Felten won a memorable mention and obviously stuck in my conscious mind. So I thought hell I had not interviewed someone who does this consistently with film so let’s get him on the show. Ben was very willing and I couldn’t wait to talk with him. Now bear in mind Ben is from France, but has lived in a few countries and currently living in Hong Kong. So if you are expecting a heavy French accent you might be surprised. Anyway, Ben’s a family man like myself and a very decent guy. After speaking with Ben I’ve come up with the idea of an act of random kindness every day. So you search for someone on Instagram and share their picture on your story - simple. it would be great to hear of you doing this too. Remember karma everyone, do something nice for someone and feel positive. So this podcast is all about Ben’s pursuit of happiness with multi-exposure and his human nature project. It’s a learning journey and he talks to us about the technical and conceptual aspects too, so very useful. So in this one we discuss: multi-exposure background choices shooting Xpan studio vs home sessions negative space vs busy backgrounds cyanotypes photograms hong kong restrictions zines Other Links We discuss the beginning of cyanotypes with (botanist) Anna Atkins with her book on plant life. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_Atkins Chris Relander - www.christofferrelander.com Ben Links Etsy - https://www.etsy.com/shop/WideWorldPhotography Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/benfelten/ Friends of the show I have discussed David from FilmDev in this show and how he's developed all my 120 colour work for a few years. Great work guaranteed and as an example, he only charges £4 for small files with delivery & TIFF's! Large scans are £8 compared to. I almost dropped an Xpan. No, that's not a joke, it's the truth. In July 2019, podcaster, photographer, and Sunny 16 helper Matthew Joseph flew up to Brisbane for a few days and we met up for a photo walk. Matthew gave his Xpan to shoot with when the incident occurred. Was it my clumsiness that almost saw a legendary camera smash to the floor of the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art? Or was it Matthew's inability to put a camera strap on properly? Keep listening and find out. Also keep listening for details of the Matt Loves Cameras plastic pano challenge! Mike and Andre are joined by Johnny Sisson from the Classic Lenses Podcast and employee of Central Camera in Chicago! We discuss age demographics of film and digital shooters, Johnny discusses 4x5 pack film holders and converting them to panoramic format and cheap Xpan alternatives, a large format craze happening?, and Mike has problems loading film on plastic developing reels for the first time in a long time. Next, we have Johnny answer questions from the Negative Positives Podcast Facebook Group that leads us down so many rabbit holes that we had to make two episodes out of it!
This time around Nick and Graham discuss photographs they have taken and how they inform the cameras that they build and how the cameras that they build allow for photographs that are different from the ones they can take with off-the-shelf models. Nick’s photo is here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/51834204@N07/42317986574/in/dateposted/ Graham’s photo is here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/129971511@N04/41391598034/in/pool-3976524@N23/ Graham starts talking about his point and shoot sheet film camera that he designed and printed though to start he refers to it as a 2-1/4 by 2-1/4 when it is actually 2-1/4 by 3-1/4 (27:30). Nick’s build for this episode is the PinBlad Deluxe, a pinhole camera made from a Hasselblad and an Ilex No. 3 shutter (42:50). Project Save the Scameras from Graeme’s Hammer gets an update (52:00) with Graham’s project of putting an SLR lens on the front of his Olympia. This episode’s book is, The Complete Nikon System: An Illustrated Equipment Guide by Peter Braczko (https://www.amazon.com/Complete-Nikon-System-Illustrated-Equipment/dp/1883403855/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1536246746&sr=8-1&keywords=the+complete+nikon+system). Graham corrects a shoutout from the last episode where he gives credit to Panomicron on Instagram for building an XPan type of camera using 3D printing when he should have credited it to Cody (https://www.instagram.com/james__irvin/). It is still worth looking at Panomicron’s work too as he’s building some cool cameras (https://www.instagram.com/panomicron/). Graham was confused as one of Cody’s images appears in Panomicron’s timeline. Also, take the time to look at Ethan from Cameradactyl’s timeline on Instagram as he’s been doing some crazy-fun shit lately (https://www.instagram.com/cameradactyl/). Nick also mentions an image posted by Dirk Fletcher’s ultralight 4X5 camera on our Flickr feed: (https://www.flickr.com/photos/dirkfletcher/44439938251/in/pool-3976524@N23/) Nick also mentions Walker Cameras (http://www.walkercameras.com/) whose website is worth taking a look at.
