From Gary Glitter to Rose West; Prince Harry to Harold Shipman… courtroom artist Priscilla Coleman has sketched them all, over five decades documenting Britain's biggest criminal trials. In UK courts, artists can't sketch inside, so she begins by writing what she sees, combining shorthand notes with a photographic memory technique. Under tight deadlines - and often without even a table - she rushes outside to turn those notes into the courtroom images we recognise from the nightly news. In this broad interview with Olly, Priscilla recalls watching the Wagatha Christie trial; considers what she's learned from such diverse case studies as Ian Huntley and Jeffrey Archer; and explains why she thinks the legal system needs to change… Image credit: Priscilla Coleman/MB Media —----------------------- Meanwhile, in the Zeitgeist, Ollie Peart joins Olly at the Concours of Elegance at Hampton Court Palace, surrounded by cars worth millions of pounds, to investigate the trend for younger people getting into classic car restoration. Is it a way of avoiding ULEZ charges? Do the tax breaks justify abandoning newer cars altogether? And, assuming you can't afford a Ferrari or a Bentley, what are the upcoming marques to invest in? The answers may surprise you… —----------------------- Elsewhere, down the Foxhole, Alix Fox - fresh from discovering a kindred spirit in a bondage-themed hair salon - tackles a listener's anxiety about contracting HIV from a non-consensual encounter. Twenty-five tests, taken over fifteen years, are telling her she doesn't have HIV… is there any chance they could be wrong? —----------------------- Finally, music this month comes from Ipswich-born rapper Piers James, and his new single 'F.O.E'. —----------------------- NOW…
Josh Letchworth has worked with some of the biggest celebrities and brands out there, but before he broke into these other industries he was regarded as one of the best wakeboard photographers to pick up a camera. Josh got a later start than some other photographers, not really diving deep into photography until after college, where he began shooting live music. His journey progressed from live events into wakeboarding, where he built a career off of telling stories through his images. Gaining self confidence, negotiating retainers, having the lab mess up your photos on a shoot for Fox, working with Nike, breaking the rules, and what makes a photo “good”. Born in Islington where he was brought up. He went to school with members of band Spandau Ballet and was very friendly with Tony Hadley.Aged 15 he decided to join the cadets but after a lot of medicals the Met Police decided that his eyesight was not up to standard and was unable to join. At 18 the Metropolitan Police wrote to Mark and offered him a job.He accepted the role, and he joined on a Monday and by the Wednesday he left Hendon! He went on to become a telecom engineer he then opened a dance wear shop which subsequently closed.During a shopping trip to Letchworth he saw the recruitment team for Hertfordshire and decided to apply and was accepted. He was sent to Bruche for training which he found particularly difficult. His initial posting was Hatfield, and this is described as not being very nice and is the subject of the books written by Charlie Owen. Mark took on the beat at Codicote where he got to meet Kim Wilde. Upon the closure of the rural beats Mark was posted to Hitchin.Having been posted to Boreham wood Mark decided to apply for the Metropolitan Police and was accepted. He was posted to Islington and his dreams were shattered. It wasn't the force that he had hoped it would be.He returned to Hertfordshire for until 2005 when he applied for and was accepted to British Transport Police and was posted to Kings Cross. During his time he experienced the delights of traveling football fans and people who had jumped in front of a speeding train.Following the Borough Market/London Bridge attack Mark became the spoc for PC Wayne Marques and was disappointed at the reaction of the senior BTP management. Joining Jill and Doron on our 24th episode, the sixth of our second season, to tell us his story is our first guest from Ireland, author Yanky Fachler, known as Jacky at Carmel College, where he was Head Boy. Following two years at Yeshiva in Israel, Yanky studied Psychology, Sociology and Economics at Brunel, where he also earned a Masters degree in Sociology, before returning to Israel. For two decades he then worked with a multitude of Israeli advertising agencies as an English language freelance copywriter until he moved to Ireland to coach corporate executives in communication. He now lives with his wife in a small town between Belfast and Dublin, and chairs the Jewish Historical Society of Ireland. Yanky is a regular contributor to the ‘Word in Edgeways' broadcast, and a writer. In addition to his memoirs (“Yanky's Doodles”), he wrote a book on the Jewish community of Letchworth, in which he grew up, and since October 7th, emails out several times a week a morale-boosting summary of the relevant news. His two sons live in California and Israel, respectively. Hear Yanky talk about why' Yanky' became ‘Jacky', becoming Head Boy, his act of civil disobedience in the Carmel synagogue, and beating The Beatles to record at Abbey Road Studios. Thank you, Yanky Jack Fachler, for turning us again to Carmel days! The chapter on Carmel College from Yanky's memoirs can be found here: https://www.carmelcollege.co.uk/the-road-from-carmel-podcast Dedication: at Yanky's request, this episode is dedicated to the memory of Yisrael Alexander, his former teacher as well as father of his friend and Carmel contemporary, David Alexander. Born in Berlin, the son of a rabbi, Yisrael was - at the age of 15, in 1938, following Kristallnacht - deported to the Buchenwald concentration camp for belonging to a Zionist youth movement, but managed to escape the Shoah on a Kindertransport to England, where he met not only his future wife, Chaya, but also Yanky's parents. Around the time of the State of Israel's founding, Yisrael and Chaya joined a kibbutz. In the mid-fifties, Yisrael and his young family came to Carmel, where he taught Jewish Studies, Hebrew and German. He passed away in Israel in 2005 at the age of 84. John Alington was an English eccentric who really put the "letch" in Letchworth. This randy reverend scandalised Hertfordshire with his saucy sermons and rock-and-roll hijinks. Alasdair tells James the peculiar history of a very rich man with a penchant for leopardskin and massively over-explaining things. North Carolina barbecue comes in all shapes, sizes, and flavors. Sure, there's always debate over Eastern Whole Hog and vinegar versus Western Pork Shoulder, red slaw, and barbecue dip with ketchup. But in the great barbecue state of North Carolina in the year 2023, people like a lot of other barbecue angles, too. The barbecue menu is diversifying even if the barbecue joint isn't changing too much.On this Low and Slow Barbecue Show episode, we meet pig masters AND pitmasters who stoke the flames of tradition and challenge expectations. We talk to Ronald Simmons from Master Blend Family Farms, a third-generation family farming business specializing in pasture-raised pork. Keith Henning is the Pitmaster at Black Powder Smokehouse in Jamestown and Asheboro – and he isn't afraid to step outside the traditional North Carolina barbecue box. Finally, Michael Letchworth joins us from Sam Jones BBQ in Winterville and Raleigh. He's spent a lifetime working in and around the same barbecue traditions that date back to Pete Jones and the Skylight Inn's whole hog barbecue, cornbread, and slaw.Listen to hear all about North Carolina barbecue traditions – and innovations.Visit The Low & Slow Barbeque Show website here!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
It seems that in the 21st century we have even more challenges, from tackling climate change and biodiversity decline to an ageing population. Dr Wei Yang, influential thought-leader and a powerful advocate for climate action and nature-based solutions, advocates a people centric approach to community and environment. It is fundamental to create a balanced system for people, nature and society to exist in harmony. When we are dealing with so many different complex issues, we need to take a simple approach, with the main focus being that without nature we cannot survive. We need a mindset change when it comes to civic planning especially. As human beings we have taken from nature and not given back to nature, and Dr Yang argues, as the Garden City Principle celebrates, we are missing a trick. There is a misunderstanding of garden cities. When we say “garden cities” people think, lots of trees. But it is a sophisticated, yet simple, social economic model. Using a land value capture model. Through development the land value increases and that can be captured providing social economic support to the community. Dr Yang discusses how state run Social welfare can be a very top down approach and not necessarily what the community needs and there is a frustration in general with the Town Planning profession. Dr Yang opens our eyes to the fact that planning is in fact multi-disciplinary, not only is it an applied science discipline but it is also an art discipline. This highly sophisticated profession cuts across so many different disciplines, but, she argues, we need to ensure we maintain compassion and selflessness when we are planning our towns and cities. In fact, town Planners should be Doctors for Mother Earth “As planners we can ensure we bring the beauty of nature and wildlife corridors into cities. At the moment, our approach to Cities, is almost like they are cancers, solid concrete blocks. That's why we have so many troubles, mental and physical health issues, if we do bring nature in, we can treat the whole environment in a totally different way.” She tells us about the first garden city Letchworth which used that approach, and we can see that the city is thriving. There is connectivity to local agricultural land. It is called a “Garden city” not referring to the “gardens” as in our households, but the agricultural belt, and of course this relates to local food production. Dr Yang also discusses the 15-minute walkable neighbourhood, and says in the 21st Century garden city you have that walkability from your house to work on a daily basis bedded into the very fabric of the city design. The Garden City is a social network, they are Social Cities. Milton Keynes example uses garden principle on a larger scale with flood attenuation and wildlife corridors. The parks Trust, manage the land using the land value capture model to look after the green space. About ¼ of the land is green. The city generates income from the premises on the land and they use this income to look after the green space professionally. Self-sustaining. We need this long-term integrated approach when it comes to town planning. Accessibility to green space affects our behaviour and physical and mental wellbeing. Generally expensive areas are leafy, but Green space is important to everyone. If we remember the pioneer Octavia Hill who helped protect green spaces for those from disadvantaged backgrounds to enjoy green space. It should be accessible to everyone and we should continue this in town planning. 74% of children only play outside. When you compare this to Prisoners who by law have to have at least 1 hour a day outside, children have less freedom than prisoners! If we want the next generation to protect nature we need them to understand it, otherwise they won't. Let's bring garden cities right to someone's doorstep, improve biodiversity, and also improve the porosity of the earth. Hello! This week we're taking you back to the distant days of 1898 when social reformer and ‘practical idealist' Ebenezer Howard set out his ideas about the Garden City, one of the most radical urban planning experiments in Britain's history. We find out from Nick Skinner whether Letchworth is actually full of sandal-wearing vegetarians (hey Geoff!) Morris dancing -- a traditional type of British folk dance is synonymous with villages fairs and men dressed in white dancing with wooden sticks. But there are many more elements to "Morris" that the stereotypes we are familiar with. In this episode, I explore its origins, and learn how it has expanded around the globe. Today's guests: Peter Austin, "Bagman" of The Morris Ring - The founding National Association of Morris and Sword Dance Clubs in Britain. Cat Van't Hof & Nat James of the Brandragon Morris in Melbourne, Australia. To learn more about these groups see below: https://themorrisring.org/ In 1934 the Cambridge Morris Men invited five other teams to join them in the formation of a national organisation, the result was that five of the revival clubs - Cambridge, Letchworth, Thaxted, East Surrey and Greensleeves - met at Thaxted in Essex on the 11th May that year to inaugurate The Morris Ring. Cambridge Morris Men describe the start of Morris in Cambridge during the winter of 1911/12 in the 1949 booklet 50 Years of Morris Dancing. Oxford were not at Thaxted, however they sent their apologies and were there in spirit, and agreed with the suggested constitution for the Ring. Helmond Morris(link is external) was the first group to start outside of the UK - in 1935. They even danced during the dark years of World War II! http://brandragon.morris.org.au/ Founded in 2001, we are Melbourne's only North West Morris Side. What is Morris Dancing? It is traditional English folk dancing! The North West style is done in formations of 4, 6 or 8 dancers – to live music. We wear heavy clogs which were worn in the factories of England during the time just after the Industrial Revolution. The dancing steps are quite simple, but the dancers create interesting visual patterns which comes from hours of practise. If you would like to try Morris dancing, please contact us and come along to a practise any time! We also welcome new musicians to join us! Our current band has members who play the melodeon, the recorder, the drum and other percussion instruments. Leading and managing change is tough. The bigger the team, the bigger the challenge. So how do you transform an old style partner led multi-office firm into one that's strategy and corporate led with crystal clear functions, roles, and responsibilities for everyone across the firm - that fully engages with, or is it at least on the journey to fully engaging with everyone in the team?On this podcast discussion with Marie Pegram of UHY East, Letchworth in Hertfordshire you'll hear Marie share the insights about the journey that UHY East have been on from partner led to strategy/corporate led some of the challenges and difficulties they've experienced on that journey.
