Art Marketing Podcast: How to Sell Art Online and Generate Consistent Monthly Sales

There's an artist I talk to every Wednesday. Could be 60s, 70s, 80s, even 90s. Brilliant. 50 years of work. Galleries gone. No website, no email list, no story they can tell in their sleep — just the same panicked question every week: what do I do on social media? I want to tell you about them before you become one of them. There's still time. That's the whole point of this episode. The macro is brutal — Iran, gas, frozen real estate, no photography demand, AI panic. That panic is real. But on a 30-year horizon? It's noise. The basics in 2013 are the basics in 2026 are the basics in 2055. Build on the part that doesn't move. In this episode: The 78-year-old artist still asking the question — and the version of you that's still mid-vine Why the macro doesn't matter on a 30-year horizon (the real estate parallel) The trinity of what's not changing: attention, business ownership, the basics The Six Basics — the list nobody wants to hear #1: A website you own — storefront, not brochure. Plus the SEO foundation: own your name before the next paradigm decides who's allowed in. #2: Print on Demand — sell what you don't have in stock. Unlocks the full pricing range. #3: Capture email every which way. The trifecta: email + phone + address. #4: Run marketing and sales campaigns. You are a business. The muscles compound — 1st campaign awkward, 50th a real machine. #5: A story you can tell in your sleep. Know, like, trust — and things in common. #6: Show up consistently. Do your measure best. Drop a tier when life happens. Just don't go dark. The wine vintage frame: some years fire on all cylinders, some go sideways. The vine doesn't care. The runway ladder: 45 → 40+ years still to come, 55 → 30, 65 → 20+. You are not at the end of anything. You are mid-vine. The tragedy of delay — not the tragedy of talent Why we built Copilot: a gallerist that keeps you consistent when life happens This week's homework: audit yourself across the six basics. Score 1 to 5 on each — website + SEO, POD and pricing range, email list, campaign rhythm, story, consistency. Pick the lowest score. That's your priority. Start today — not next quarter, not when rates drop. Today. Don't be the 78-year-old still asking the question. Resources mentioned: Art Storefronts — the website built for working artists Art Helper — Copilot is your gallerist Related episodes: All Oars In — The Anatomy of a Sale (Ep 11) Nothing New Under the Sun — The Rules That Actually Sell Art (Ep 10) The Algorithm Doesn't Care About Your Art (Ep 8) The Coffee Shop Test — Why Your Social Media Is Failing (Ep 5) You are not too late. You are exactly on time — if you start the basics today. Pick which 78-year-old you're going to be, and how many of the next 20, 30, 40 vintages you're actually going to fill. Pick. Then build.

They discuss First Thursday's recently released AI in Galleries Report, which offers a data-backed look at how galleries around the world are engaging with artificial intelligence. The conversation explores what motivated the report and how it was developed, key findings including the high level of AI adoption among gallery professionals, and the most common ways these tools are being used in practice. They also examine important questions around client confidentiality and data security, how gallery staff feel about integrating AI into their workflows, and why concerns around job displacement may be less pronounced in the art world. Finally, they look ahead to how AI could further shape the gallery landscape and what dealers should be paying attention to in the years to come.

Women Emerging- The Expedition

In the third episode of the series on Grandmotherness, Julia speaks with Marianna about how this stage of life reshapes the way we listen, create fairness, and support others while leading. Marianna draws a powerful parallel between her role as a family judge and her experience as a grandmother. In both, she explains, one thing matters deeply: people need to feel that they have been heard. Whether in a courtroom or with a child, the outcome may not always be what someone wants — but if the process feels fair and they feel listened to, they are far more likely to accept it. The conversation explores the difference between focusing on the decision and focusing on the process. While it is tempting to aim for the perfect answer, Marianna reflects that what often matters more is whether people feel they had the space to express themselves and be understood. They also discuss the shift from an adversarial mindset to a problem-solving approach. Instead of taking sides or proving a point, the focus becomes understanding what is really going on beneath the surface and working together to find a way forward. Time emerges as a critical theme. Marianna reflects on how pressure and urgency can cause people to feel flustered, unheard, and defensive. Giving people time — to speak, to think, to respond — changes the quality of both the conversation and the outcome. Finally, she speaks about selflessness — removing ego from the interaction and focusing fully on the person in front of you. In grandmotherness, she explains, the focus shifts entirely to the other person. And in leading, this shift can transform how people experience being supported, challenged, and understood. This episode is a reminder that leading is not only about making decisions. It is about creating a process where people feel heard, treated fairly, and able to move forward — even when the answer is not what they hoped for. About the Guest Marianna was called to the Bar in 1977, where she specialised in family law. She was appointed a Recorder in 1999 and became a Deputy High Court Judge in 2002. That same year, she took silk, becoming a Queen's Counsel (QC). In 2012, she was appointed as a full-time judge, and in 2014 she became a Designated Family Judge. Bencher of the Inner Temple since 2009. She retired from the bench in 2024. In addition to her judicial career, Marianna has been actively involved in public service. She served as a governor of a local school for 20 years, worked as an AIDS ambassador, and was a trustee for the Galleries of Justice in Nottingham. She also contributed, alongside others, to a report on the rights of children in military custody.

He had his university degrees, but Michael Reid knew his strongest foundation actually came from his time spent honing expertise and his business sense inside Christie’s, the massive global art world juggernaut. Based in London, Michael discovered that exposure to art and auctions and the business of art on the international stage was the best qualification he could possibly have. This self described boy from country NSW, who describes himself as super ambitious, who is building and growing his “world” as he calls it, who has built physical galleries, online platforms, food destinations, a current pop-up gallery in Los Angeles with plans for a permanent exhibition space there, who loves to drop names and sells to some of the finest collectors in Australia, operates his global business from his quiet, peaceful home in a tiny town, yes … back in country NSW. And he’s not finished yet.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Our past guests emphasize that fine art is sustained by strong, long-term relationships with collectors, not just technical skill or gallery placement. They describe collectors as people who often want a personal connection and ongoing dialogue—through conversations at shows, home salon events, and gallery openings. Many of our guests highlight using newsletters, social media, and even texting to stay in touch, share new work, and make collectors feel appreciated and involved. Several artists stress the importance of gratitude and reciprocity, from handwritten thank-you notes to remembering birthdays and asking how collectors discovered their work. Overall, collectors are not only buyers but possible friends, supporters, and “connectors” whose loyalty and enthusiasm can sustain an artist's career over many years.Episodes mentioned in order of appearance:81 Steve Atkinson87 Johanna Spinks94 Karen Blackwood61 Nanci France-Vaz99 Heather Arenas101 Joseph Gyurcsak120 Kim Casebeer130 Scott Ruthven162 David Griffin166 Miriam Schulman170 Kim Lordier

In this powerful episode of I'm an Artist, Not a Salesman, host Luis Guzman sits down with tattoo artist and gallery owner Yosh, the creative force behind The Ink Gallery in Staten Island and Sacred Ink Gallery in South River, New Jersey. What unfolds is not just a conversation about tattooing, but a deep dive into risk, legacy, fatherhood, authenticity, and what it really means to build a life around your art.Yosh shares his journey from being a graffiti kid with a nickname that stuck, to working as a corporate creative director designing major campaigns for global brands, to walking away from financial security during the 2009 recession. While others were clinging to stability, he made the terrifying leap into full-time tattooing. No investors. No safety net. Just belief, skill, and an unshakable drive to create something of his own. This episode explores the tension so many creatives feel: stay safe in corporate or bet on yourself? Yosh opens up about watching mentors lose their jobs, realizing he didn't want anyone controlling his destiny, and choosing the uncertain road. What started in a private studio tattooing friends every single day turned into two thriving galleries built from the ground up.But this conversation goes beyond entrepreneurship. Yosh reframes tattooing as something deeper than a service. He sees it as sacred work. Permanent art. Emotional surgery. A transfer of energy between artist and client. He talks about interviewing clients before agreeing to work with them, understanding their stories, and recognizing the difference between someone who wants a quick stamp and someone who values art as legacy.Key themes we unpack in this episode include:Leaving corporate to pursue creative freedomBuilding a tattoo business with no loans or outside fundingPassion over profit and what that actually looks likeBalancing fatherhood, fitness, and entrepreneurshipThe evolution of tattoo culture in the age of AI and social mediaWhy authenticity matters more than hypeTurning a tattoo shop into a fine art gallery experienceYosh also speaks candidly about the emotional weight of his work. From memorial tattoos to major life milestones, he has marked thousands of people permanently. He describes tattooing not as decoration, but as purpose-driven craftsmanship. In his words, you are only as good as your last piece. Every design is treated like his first. We also dive into the mindset that keeps him sharp: early morning gym sessions, constant research, fasting discipline, and staying present in each role he plays. Whether he's tattooing, painting large-scale canvases, or spending time with his kids, he operates from one core principle: legacy over ego.For artists listening who feel stuck, underappreciated, or afraid to take the leap, this episode is a real look at what it costs and what it gives back. Yosh proves you don't need fame to be fulfilled. You need purpose, discipline, and the courage to bet on your craft. If this conversation resonated with you, make sure to subscribe to I'm an Artist, Not a Salesman on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube. FAA reorganization and shutdown prep, Airbus A220 stretch, certification as a trade tool, UPS MD‑11 retirement, 777X engine snag, fatal Challenger crash, iconic aircraft, new NASM galleries, aviation career issues, aviation-themed music, and a future DC‑3/CH‑47 fly‑in. Aviation News FAA Adds Departments, Shuffles Roles The new FAA reorganization differs from the previous structure mainly by centralizing safety oversight, creating new modernization and advanced technology offices, and consolidating internal support functions under new top-level offices. A new, agency‑wide Aviation Safety Management System (SMS) Organization implements a single safety system and risk-management strategy across all FAA lines of business, rather than having safety functions and metrics siloed in multiple offices as before. An Airspace Modernization Office is dedicated to rolling out the “brand‑new air traffic control system” and overseeing broader NAS modernization, which previously was handled within the Air Traffic Organization and other units rather than a single, focused office. An Office of Advanced Aviation Technologies integrates UAS, eVTOL, AAM, electric, and supersonic aircraft into the NAS. These functions were formerly spread among UAS integration, NextGen, and various certification/AVS branches. A new Administration and Finance Office consolidates the functions of finance, information technology, and human resources. Previously, they were distributed across multiple lines of business and staff offices. A Policy and Legal Office pulls together policy, legal, stakeholder engagement, financial assistance, and the agency's rulemaking/regulatory office. Previously, rulemaking and policy lived mainly within Aviation Safety and other distinct policy offices. The Administration and Finance Office, Policy and Legal Office, Air Traffic Organization, and the new safety and modernization offices all report to the Administrator. Shutdown Plan for FAA Involves 10K Furloughs The FAA's plan for the short-lived partial government shutdown was to furlough more than 10,000 FAA workers and withhold pay for 13,835 air traffic controllers. Exclusive: Airbus to kickstart pre-sales for a larger A220 jet, sources say Airbus is considering launching an A220 stretch – the A220-500 with around 180 seats. This is a “simple stretch,” meaning the same wings, the same engines, and a longer fuselage. The Airbus Board approval is required before the A220-500 can be formally launched. Trade War Skies: Understanding Trump's 2026 Decertification Order on Canadian Aircraft In a January 30, 2026, social media post, President Donald Trump announced the “decertification” of all Canadian-manufactured aircraft if Gulfstream aircraft were not certified by Canada. The President alleged that Canada has “wrongfully, illegally, and steadfastly” refused to certify U.S.-made G500, G600, G700, and G800 jets. If Transport Canada did not act immediately, a 50% tariff would be implemented. Over 5,400 Canadian-built planes are registered in the U.S. This sent shockwaves, if not panic, throughout the industry. With time, clarification has come: The order would apply to new aircraft airworthiness certificates and wouldn't ground the fleet. The IAM (International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers) urged a separation of safety regulation and political grievances. “You can't weaponize the certification process,” said union leaders, emphasizing that aviation safety should remain an independent pillar of global travel. Some feel Transport Canada is holding off on certifying the G700 and G800 mainly because they are not willing to mirror the FAA's temporary fuel‑icing exemption. The Canadian regulator wants the full cold‑weather and icing compliance demonstrated first. UPS won't resurrect MD-11 fleet after deadly crash, takes $137M charge UPS is retiring its fleet of 27 MD-11 aircraft and, in the process, writing off $137 million after-tax. The MD-11s will be replaced with twin-engine Boeing 767-300 cargo jets. In response to the grounding of the MD-11 fleet, UPS repositioned some aircraft from outside the US, expanded transportation by truck, and leased planes from partner airlines. During an earnings call, Chief Financial Officer Brian Dykes said, “Over the next fifteen months, we expect to take delivery of 18 new Boeing 767 aircraft, with 15 expected to deliver this year. As new aircraft join our fleet, we will step down the leased aircraft and associated expenses. We believe these actions are consistent with building a more efficient global network positioned for growth, flexibility and profitability.” Boeing's certification ‘hangover' drags on with new 777X issue Also, Boeing has identified an engine durability issue with the General Electric GE9X engines that power the 777X, although CEO Kelly Ortberg says this will not impact the first 777X delivery in 2027. Also, Ortberg signalled to investors that the company plans to increase 737 MAX production this year to 47 from 42 planes per month. Boeing has been preparing a fourth MAX production line in Everett to produce 737 MAX 10s, although the aircraft has yet to receive certification. Boeing posted job openings for the line, and the tooling is complete. Tracing the hours after a fatal plane crash in Bangor The Bombardier Challenger 600‑series business jet crashed during takeoff from Bangor International Airport in a snowstorm, killing all six people on board and triggering a complex, weather‑hampered investigation. The business jet was operating a private flight from Bangor to Europe with two crew and four passengers from the Houston area. The plane had been deiced and was cleared for takeoff on runway 33 around 7:40–7:45 p.m., in heavy snow, with visibility down to about three‑quarters of a mile and several inches of snow on the ground. Within roughly a minute of takeoff clearance, controllers halted all traffic after the aircraft crashed on or near the runway, coming to rest inverted and on fire. Possible lines of inquiry include: Wing contamination and ice buildup are known risk factors that have contributed to past Challenger‑series accidents. Aircraft performance and whether the wing stalled on takeoff. Deicing procedures and timing relative to takeoff, including whether holdover times were exceeded. Crew qualifications, training, and recent duty history. Mechanical condition of the aircraft and any anomalies captured on the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder, which have been sent to the NTSB in Washington. In this episode, I reconnect with Sharone Halevy nearly a year after our collector talk at Superfine (now The Superfair) in San Francisco. Sharone is an abstract expressionist painter who's built her entire practice around commission work and selling directly to collectors without gallery representation. We discuss her transition from theater directing to painting, why she works on sliding scales to make art accessible, and how she uses sound and storytelling to create "tangible memories," paintings that capture how moments felt rather than every detail. Sharone shares her approach to building confidence, why friends and family are your first important collectors, and how she leveraged social media to create direct audience connection. As lead curator and operations manager at The Superfair, Sharone coaches every exhibiting artist on booth curation, pricing strategy, and selling techniques. We discuss the fair's rebrand and refocus on attracting the right buyers rather than massive crowds, and why in-person events matter for artists, especially those in rural areas. We wrap up with Sharone's challenge for the year: find a hobby. Not another income stream or content for social media, something tactile and creative you do purely for joy.   CALL FOR ART: CREATE! At the top of 2025, the outlook for the art industry was pretty bleak, and people's worst fears were, in some cases, more than realized. By now, if you're paying any attention to the movements in the art market you have been hearing the drumbeat of bad news: Galleries shuttering, a lot of the buying energy drying up, some fairs shriking operations, and the secondary market stuttering. But the picture is, as usual, quite nuanced depending on how you look at it. There were some upsides to the slowdown in the hype and the speculation gamification of art seems to be over, which some people say is not the worst thing. Things seemed to turn a corner in the closing months of 2025, which included a successful fall New York auction week and a stronger-than-expected edition of Art Basel Miami Beach. Following two years of a down market and declining sales, the world's two leading auction houses Christie's and Sotheby's reported at the close of the year, upticks in total projected revenue for 2025. So is the wind back in the sails? After years of downturn, has the art market changed in permanent ways? What major shifts can we expect in 2026? Senior editor Kate Brown is joined by Marc Spiegler to consider these questions. For those who don't already know, Spiegler led Art Basel from 2007 to 2022, and the brand saw a major expansion under his tenure. Currently, he works on a portfolio of cultural strategy projects with major foundations, private corporation and projects in the immersive digital and experiential. Spiegler has long been a Visiting Professor in cultural management at Università Bocconi in Milan and launched the Art Market Minds Academy, which just announced its Cultural Catalyst Project.

A tiny number of fairs, galleries, curators, and institutions sit at the top… and they decide what becomes valuable. In this review, I cover:Why the “mysterious” art market feels so closed-offThe alpha / beta / gamma / delta pyramid Resch uses to explain status and accessWhy “art as an investment” is mostly a trap (unless you're playing at the top end)Why the book made me want to buy art for meaning, not resale00:00 – Intro: why I picked this book00:21 – The empty wall problem (why I want art)00:58 – What I hoped the book would solve02:12 – The book's style: blue quotes + companion “artist” book03:22 – Resch's economist approach to art04:09 – The real driver of value: representation & institutions05:11 – The “35-year-old” cliff edge for artists06:12 – The harsh truth: most art has near-zero resale value06:52 – Art index vs S&P 500 (and what happens with broader data)09:11 – When art can be an investment (and the price floor)10:24 – The better frame: be a patron, not an investor10:52 – The parts I skipped: emails, CVs, auction house logistics12:22 – “Networking and Instagram” (useful but irritating)13:26 – The collector mantra: buy what you love14:13 – The pyramid: alpha / beta / gamma / delta18:35 – NFTs + digital art gets a mention19:11 – Did it help me buy art? In the mid-'90s, two high-end New York art galleries began selling one fake painting after another – works in the style of Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Mark Rothko and others. It was the largest art fraud in modern U.S. history, totaling more than $80 million. Our first story looks at how it happened and why almost no one ever was punished by authorities. Our second story revisits an investigation into a painting looted by the Nazis during World War II. More than half a century later, a journalist helped track it down through the Panama Papers. This is an update of an episode that originally aired in January 2020.  Support Reveal's journalism at Revealnews.org/donatenow Subscribe to our weekly newsletter to get the scoop on new episodes at Revealnews.org/weekly Connect with us onBluesky, Facebook and Instagram Learn about your ad choices: dovetail.prx.org/ad-choices

Noah Horowitz on Art Basel as a Cultural Force

As the CEO of Art Basel, Noah Horowitz has made it his mission to ensure that the international art platform is seen, valued, and experienced—far beyond its art-fair roots—as a cultural catalyst and “opportunity accelerator.” Over the past 55 years, beginning with its tight-knit origins in Basel, Switzerland, in 1970, Art Basel has evolved into an international juggernaut, with best-in-class fairs also in Miami Beach, Hong Kong, and Paris—and soon, under Horowitz's leadership, Qatar, with an edition debuting there in February 2026. With more than two decades of experience, and as a tireless advocate and enthusiast for all things art, from artists and galleries to collectors and institutions, Horowitz is exactly the right person for the job.On this episode of Time Sensitive, Horowitz details his ambitious agenda to stretch Art Basel's reach into realms far beyond what would traditionally be considered the art world; shares his long-view perspective on the economics of art; and considers the centuries-old history that, in a roundabout way, helped lead to—and continues to inform and shape—today's art market.Show notes: [05:13] Art Basel Paris[05:13] Art Basel Qatar[05:13] Art Basel Miami Beach[05:13] Art Basel Hong Kong[07:54] Frida Escobedo[10:41] The Art Basel and UBS 2025 Survey of Global Collecting[10:41] Art Basel Awards[21:27] Rei Naito[23:51] Art of the Deal: Contemporary Art in a Global Financial Market (2011)[27:42] Rirkrit Tiravanija[41:18] High Art Lite: The Rise and Fall of Young British Art (2020)[32:42] KAWS[39:04] Princeton Record Exchange[42:18] Frieze[42:52] Hans Ulrich Obrist[42:52] Okwui Enwezor[45:00] Rem Koolhaas[45:57] Kirk Varnedoe[45:57] Pictures of Nothing: Abstract Art Since Pollock (2006)[50:05] Talking Prices: Symbolic Meanings of Prices on the Market for Contemporary Art (2005)[51:49] Clare McAndrew[54:42] The Experience Economy (2019)[58:43] Vincenzo de Bellis[1:03:04] Pérez Art Museum

#AD - Cork Street Galleries special episode! We meet art critic Louisa Buck to explore 100 years of Cork Street!Cork Street Galleries this year celebrates its centenary as a pioneering force in the art world, with 2025 marking 100 years as the iconic London art destination. A specially curated programme honours its rich legacy as the historic and enduring home of modern and contemporary art in London. In tribute to the centennial year, a first-of-its-kind initiative, a group exhibition entitled Fear Gives Wings to Courage was staged across all 15 galleries on Cork Street in the Summer, with each gallery presenting a response to a central theme conceived by Tarini Malik, curator of modern and contemporary Art at the Royal Academy of Arts, London.Fear Gives Wings to Courage has been commissioned in three parts as a response to the curatorial theme conceived by Malik. This is comprised of Fear Gives Wings to Courage Part I; a new edition of the Cork Street Galleries Banners Commission forming an outdoor element of the exhibition on view until the end of 2025; Fear Gives Wings to Courage Part II; a presentation of works within each participating gallery space, on view from 11 to 25 July 2025; and Fear Gives Wings to Courage Part III; CATALOGUE Issue 8:0, guest-edited by Malik, which coincided with Frieze London 2025.Taking its title from Jean Cocteau's seminal 1938 work La peur donnant des ailes au courage(Fear Giving Wings to Courage), the exhibition celebrates 100 years of Cork Street and the transformative potential of artists' voices both within gallery spaces and outside of them. Gesturing to the street's long-established cultural history, the exhibition's theme recalls Cork Street's pioneering role in transforming London into a hub for international art practices in the twentieth century, while also making it one of the key platforms in Europe for the expansion of Surrealist and Dadaist movements.13 years after Freddy Mayor established the first gallery on Cork Street in 1925, Peggy Guggenheim opened her 'Guggenheim Jeune' gallery in 1938. While hosting her first show with the famed polymath Jean Cocteau, the gallery stirred up significant controversy due to his painting La peur donnant des ailes au courage (Fear Giving Wings to Courage), which was confiscated by British customs authorities upon arrival in the United Kingdom. Similarly, this exhibition nods to the necessity of the gallery ecosystem in encouraging, upholding and presenting artists' practices that are assertions of agency in the face of societal and political pressures. The galleries on Cork Street were asked to respond to the theme with artists' work that can be thought of as emblematic of Cocteau's unabashed vigour and Guggenheim's abiding belief in supporting artists. The galleries were also encouraged to profile artists who continue to draw from the legacies of Surrealism, not as a mere style or movement within the Western canon, but rather as a state of mind; a fluid, boundless approach of navigating notions of the self and society that transgress borders and temporalities. We are excited to answer your art questions! In this episode we will discuss: how do you keep your practice thriving while navigating space, money, and access? We dig in with honest, field-tested advice and personal stories from two working artists who've built momentum in imperfect conditions. We start with the studio question everyone wrestles with: home vs separate space. You'll hear why a “setup” beats square footage, how to protect focus if interruptions tank your flow, and scrappy ways to work larger without taking on a lease you can't sustain. From there, we lay out a gallery game plan: what a strong approach package looks like (10–15 works with depth behind them), what “consistency” really means, and how to get on the radar through open calls, smart social presence, and showing up at the right level.International showing gets a reality check. Culture changes the conversation, but logistics can make or break it. We walk through shipping options, customs surprises, and how to avoid vanity traps with contracts that shift costs onto artists. We also talk residencies, including why many invite-only programs pull from boards and alumni, and how relationships can open doors when applications can't.Collectors and sustainability round out the heart of the episode. We share favorite delivery stories, why early-stage artists should sell to keep making, and how ideal collectors help build careers over time. For anyone staring down a short financial runway, we offer practical steps: emergency grant resources, low-cost materials that keep you prolific, and the mindset shift that treats bridge income as a patron rather than a detour. If you found value here, follow the show, share it with an artist friend, and leave a review so more creatives can find these conversations.
