Getting gallery representation isn't just about having great work—it's about preparation, professionalism, and relationships. At Gabba Gallery in Los Angeles, those values are at the heart of how things run. For more than a decade, owner and director Jason Ostro has led the gallery's mission to elevate emerging and mid-career artists, while curator and manager Elena Jacobson makes sure every show runs smoothly. Together, they bring a practical and deeply human perspective to the artist-gallery partnership. In this conversation, host Alyson Stanfield talks with Jason and Elena about: How they collaborate and divide responsibilities at Gabba Gallery. The qualities they look for in artists and what makes someone a strong fit. Common mistakes artists make when submitting or working with galleries. Why proper preparation makes a big difference in working with an artist (or not). How Gabba's 50/50 commission model works and what artists should know about gallery finances. Why relationships, networking, and trust are just as important as talent. Whether you're actively seeking gallery representation or want to better understand the dynamics behind the scenes, this episode offers honest insight into what it takes to succeed. Takeaway: Showing your work in a gallery isn't a handoff—it's a partnership. The more you understand the gallery's role, the stronger your relationship (and opportunities) will be.

Today we're flipping the script on how to get discovered by galleries. I'm sharing what truly makes a gallery good, where they're actually looking for artists, and how to align your presence (online and energetically) to be seen. We'll cover: The subtle but strategic ways curators and gallerists scout talent How to optimize your social media and website without burnout Where press and amplifiers fit in—and how to attract them The identity shift that makes gallery invitations inevitable This is about becoming magnetic—not performing. By the end of the training, you'll have a checklist of where you're already showing up and a clear path for what to upgrade next. We end with a powerful subliminal mindset exercise -- you don't want to miss.
Welcome to Day 1 of my Become Magnetic to Galleries training — a 3-part series designed to help you align your mindset, messaging, and presence so that galleries can't help but notice you. In this episode, we're talking about what galleries are actually looking for when they decide to represent an artist. Whether you've been applying to open calls, sending DMs, or wondering why you keep getting overlooked, this will give you the clarity you've been craving.

This episode of the Change Africa podcast features Selasie Gomado, founder and creative director of Artematis, a Ghanaian art collective and agency driving the continent's artistic renaissance.Selasei begins by tracing his early love for drawing, stifled by familial expectations to pursue engineering, a path he followed until a post-university epiphany sparked Artematis. What started as an online art shop in 2018, born from a random thought in a car ride, has grown into a dynamic collective showcasing five artists globally, from London to Hong Kong.Selasie recounts the rocky early days—six months of no sales—until a friend's advice to tap into Ghanaians' love for experiences led to the first Full Moon Exhibition. With 300 attendees and a single sale, it was a modest validation that shifted Artematis toward events. The momentum of 2019 screeched to a halt with COVID-19, nearly ending the venture. But a personal brush with the virus in 2021 became a turning point. Bedridden and reflective, Selasie recommitted to managing artists full-time, quitting his engineering job after signing with Phillips Auction House for a landmark 2022 London show. The discussion pivots to the artists of Artematis—Hawa Awanle Ayiboro, Abdur Rahman Muhammad, Kwaku Yaro, James Mishio, and Courage Hunke—each pushing boundaries with unique materials and themes. From Hawa's vivid depictions of women's struggles to Courage's fusion of paper and plastic waste, Selasi highlights their growth from emerging to established talents. He reflects on the challenge of balancing structure with creative chaos, a dance he navigates with patience and an open mind.Selasie situates Artematis within Ghana's thriving art scene, crediting pioneers like KNUST's arts department and galleries such as 1957 for creating “third spaces” that democratize art. Yet, he notes a persistent hurdle: local art collecting lags, with over 90% of sales to foreigners. The episode closes with a hopeful vision for African art's future—rooted in quality, documentation, and experimentation—underscoring Selasi's belief that its foundations are still being built.Chapters00:00 Introduction to Change Africa Podcast01:01 Selasi Gomadu and Artomatis: A Journey into Art03:01 The Evolution of Artomatis and Its Impact06:01 Challenges and Triumphs in the Art Scene09:04 Navigating the Art Market: Strategies and Insights12:00 The Role of Community in Artist Development15:03 Defining Great Art and the Artist's Journey17:59 Fostering Creativity and Managing Artists21:07 Success Stories and Growth in the Art Collective23:47 Behind the Scenes of Art Exhibitions26:56 Experimental Approaches in Contemporary Art30:00 The Future of Artomatis and the Ghanaian Art Scene35:50 Building Connections in the Art World39:38 Challenges in the Art Industry44:58 The Role of Galleries in Community Engagement47:03 The Evolving Culture of Art Collection in Ghana50:49 Supporting Artists' Mental Health53:39 Spotlight on Emerging Artists01:06:30 The Future of Art in AfricaFurther Reading and ResourcesTo explore Selasi's world further:Visit Artematis' website (assumed URL) for artist profiles and upcoming shows.Read Rebecca Ann Proctor's 2021 article that spotlighted Artematis, Explore Ghana's art scene through Gallery 1957 and Nubuke Foundation, key players mentioned by Selasi. This week's episode on the Artist Academy Podcast features UK artist Louise McNaught. Louise is an environmentally conscious wildlife artist whose passion shines through every canvas she paints. I reached out to Louise back in 2019 for her first interview on this podcast (see her first interview HERE), so this episode provides an updated look at how her art business has changed post-COVID. Louise still sells through art galleries but now primarily focuses on social media to make sales. I thoroughly enjoyed catching up with a fellow animal (cat) lover and talking about the different ways to sell canvases, which is something I rarely manage to do. For me, selling a customizable wall mural is so much easier than selling a canvas painting that comes purely from my own creativity. It's also really tough for me to push myself to be creative in my own way, with no customer insight required. Louise lends her perspective on both of these challenges, drawing from her many years of experience. Let me know what you think of this week's updated episode with Louise McNaught!

This week on the podcast is part two of our interview with brothers Brian and Ross Raitman. Together they own Raitman Art Galleries in Breckenridge and Vail, Colorado, and also have a robust online gallery on their website. They started with an 825 sq. foot gallery in 2007, and over the years have expanded to over 8,000 sq. feet of gallery space in their 3 locations. Many of their 50+ artists have national and international reputations, and have works featured in museums and Fortune 100 companies. You won't want to miss this entertaining behind-the-scenes look at what it took to build a successful multi-showroom art gallery from the ground up!https://www.raitmanart.com/
