My guest on the show today is Jon Baskin, co-founder and editor of The Pointmagazine, which over the last 16 years has managed to carve out for itself a really distinctive and important space within the broader American literary intellectual scene. Jon and I have traded emails over the years, but like a lot of people who I think of as loose comrades within the broader scene, we had never actually gazed on each other's faces or heard each other's voices before we got on Zoom to do this. So it was nice to connect. We talk a lot about the birth and development of The Point, in particular its origins in the Committee on Social Thought program at the University of Chicago. We talk about its relationship to N+1 , which is in many ways the seminal magazine of the last few decades of political intellectual life on the left in America. We get into how Jon and his co-editors have managed to keep their bearings while so many other publications have been whipsawed and in some cases destroyed by the violent political energies of the past decade. And we talk about how The Point does and doesn't intersect with the emerging media landscape. This is a really fun conversation with Jon. Hope you enjoy.AI Show notes courtesy of Descript:00:00 Introduction to Eminent Americans00:17 Meet John Baskin: Co-founder of The Point Magazine01:28 The Birth and Evolution of The Point Magazine02:21 Upcoming Conversations and Projects04:38 John Baskin's Intellectual Journey05:45 The Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago11:49 Influences and Inspirations Behind The Point23:28 The Role of Philosophy in The Point's Editorial Vision36:30 Challenges and Conflicts in Editorial Direction43:00 The Convergence of Magazines in the Late 2000s44:43 The Role of DNA in Magazine Identity45:28 Challenges in Finding Writers47:06 Impact of Substack on Traditional Magazines49:50 Balancing Established and New Writers57:31 Exploring the Political Spectrum of The Point01:03:32 The Relationship Between Political and Cultural Conservatism01:08:22 The Point's Foray into Substack01:17:39 The Mystique of The Point and Its Editors01:19:48 Conclusion and Final Thoughts Get full access to Eminent Americans at danieloppenheimer.substack.com/subscribe

Producer Dan Levine recalls the making of 2016's iconic Arrival. From the moment he read Ted Chiang's Story of Your Life, Dan knew he had to find a way to bring it to the screen. Director Denis Villeneuve, an incredible talent but still relatively unknown, was the perfect choice. Producers had to wait until Denis wrapped Sicario, but things moved quickly once Amy Adams came on board and suggested Jeremy Renner as her co-star. Production went smoothly, although the material presented endless challenges for Denis and the producers. The scariest moment was after the finished film was screened for the studio - they did not like it and wanted rewrites and a reshoot to change the ending. Dan knew the film worked and fought for the ending that garnered 8 Oscar nominations. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The Today's Conveyancer podcast welcomes Group Chief Commercial Officer at First4Lawyers, Nick Delaney, to discuss their first foray in conveyancing services. The Group, best known for its FCA-regulated claims management company and SRA-regulated volume Road Traffic Accident work, has been going for 16 years and has launched F4LPlus; a comparison and lead generation service for consumers seeking conveyancing services. Throughout the discussion Nick explains how the project has developed over the past 18 months in an effort to diversify the business; and why conveyancing, rather than other consumer legal services such as wills, probate, employment and family services, has been the testing ground. Nick says the service is about helping consumers make a choice about who they want to use; but recognises the challenge services like F4LPlus and other comparison tools have in differentiating their panel firms. Geography, consumer reviews and carefully curated profiles are among the selection criteria presented to enquirers in an effort to try and give the consumer more than the price to look at. If there are lessons to be learnt from the extensive experience in high volume personal injury and clinical negligence matters First4Lawyers are best known for, it is recognising the importance of a sales process for the leads generated. Successful firms are the ones who have people at the front end helping clients, says Nick. The speed at which consumers get a response plays a key role in their decision-making process. And above all "firms who are good at picking up the phone and speaking to the consumer get more work" - Nick is unequivocal about this. You can automate much of the enquiry management process but at some point you need to pick up the phone and speak to people, he adds. Tackling criticism often leveled at comparison sites around the quality of leads, F4LPlus say they have firms converting 20%+ of their leads such are the verification stages the software requires, including creating an account, going through an initial fact fine, including timescales and budget, and working with firms to create an efficient follow up process. Conveyancing is the testing ground for the new service, with Nick hopeful of expanding into other areas of law in the future. NBFCs Get a Boost from RBI Policy Shift India's non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) are set to benefit from RBI's decision to lower risk-weights on bank lending to NBFCs from 125% to 100% starting April 1. This makes funding cheaper and more accessible, easing liquidity constraints that had slowed bank lending to NBFCs to 6.7% in Dec 2024 (half the previous year's rate). Key beneficiaries include M&M Financial and Cholamandalam Investment, which rely on banks for nearly 50% of their borrowings. Meanwhile, Bajaj Finance and Shriram Finance (less dependent on banks) may see a smaller impact. However, asset quality remains a concern. M&M Financial's bad loans rose to 2% in Q3FY25, pushing its stock down 3% over the past year, while Cholamandalam, with stronger financials (21.6% RoE), saw its stock rise 30%. Investors remain cautious—Cholamandalam trades at 3.9x FY26 book value, while M&M Financial lags at 1.6x. The big question: Will NBFCs pass on the cost benefits to customers, and will this policy shift be enough to revive growth? UltraTech Cement's C&W Entry Rattles the Market UltraTech Cement's ₹1,800 crore foray into the cables & wires (C&W) industry has triggered sharp stock declines in Polycab, KEI, Havells, RR Kabel, and Finolex Cables (5-20%). The move draws parallels with Grasim's entry into paints, which eroded valuations of incumbents. Unlike paints (an oligopoly), C&W is fragmented, making market share gains difficult. UltraTech lacks a strong distribution network, adding to execution challenges. With existing players already expanding capacity, overcapacity risks loom. If UltraTech pursues aggressive pricing, margins could suffer. Analysts estimate UltraTech could capture 5-7% of the market by FY29 (projected industry size: ₹1.3 trillion). Interestingly, UltraTech's own stock fell 5%, as investors question its capital allocation strategy—cement or diversification? Amazon Unveils First Quantum Computing Chip, Ocelot Amazon Web Services (AWS) has launched Ocelot, its first quantum computing chip, aimed at reducing error rates by 90%. This marks a key step toward practical quantum computing, a field dominated by Google, Microsoft, and Amazon. Microsoft recently claimed a breakthrough in quantum matter, while Google's Willow chip tackled error correction in December. Amazon's approach mirrors Google's focus on superconducting quantum circuits, while Microsoft takes a different route. Ocelot is still a prototype, not a full system. While quantum computers promise massive computational power for applications like drug discovery and cybersecurity, commercial viability remains years—if not a decade—away. Analysts call this an advancement, not a breakthrough, but note that Amazon's new method for error correction could help it catch up. Beyond hardware, Amazon is also expanding its quantum services, including its Braket cloud platform and business advisory programs. The road to quantum supremacy remains long, but Amazon is moving closer. Lodha Family Feud Intensifies Over Brand Name Manju Lodha, matriarch of the Lodha real estate empire, has intervened in the legal battle between brothers Abhishek and Abhinandan Lodha, stating that neither can claim rights over the other's business. The dispute stems from a 2017 family agreement that split the empire. Abhishek leads Macrotech Developers (₹1.19 trillion market cap), while Abhinandan launched The House of Abhinandan Lodha after exiting the family business in 2015. Macrotech took legal action in January to prevent Abhinandan from using the Lodha name, citing brand confusion. With the next Bombay High Court hearing on March 21, the battle over legacy and business identity continues.

Kate Hudson was raised by Hollywood royalty: Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. When she was growing up, they told her that if she wanted to be an actor it had to be because of something deep inside her — not just for fame and fortune. Her latest role is in Max Minghella's “Shell,” which is all about the extreme measures actors will take to stay young. Kate sits down with Tom for a conversation about that film, her Hollywood upbringing, her Oscar-nominated role in “Almost Famous,” and why these days she's making music.

The Fourth Century was, theologically speaking, a century of conflict and clarification. Heretical teachings concerning the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ and the Persons of the Trinity were widespread and backed by powerful churchmen. Faithful, biblically-rooted theologians contended for the truth, and two church councils (in 325 and 381) helped to clarify orthodox doctrine in the face of these onslaughts. This week's episode introduces one of the theologians who, from the mid to late 4th century, gave eloquent expression to orthodox Christology and Trinitarian theology: Gregory of Nazianzus (c. 329–390). As well as introducing this quiet, pensive man, we read a section from William Cunningham's newly republished Historical Theology on the question of how the Persons of the Holy Trinity are properly to be distinguished. Furniture Industry News - August 26, 2024Key Trends in Mobile Shopping:Mobile Usage Dominates: A recent Bizrate Insights survey shows that 70% of consumers spend up to five hours weekly on mobile shopping or product research, with 30% spending over six hours. This trend is particularly strong among consumers aged 30-39, where over half of the purchases are made via mobile devices.Cross-Generational Appeal: Older demographics (ages 40-64 and 65+) are also heavily using mobile phones for tasks like checking store hours, indicating mobile commerce's widespread adoption.Impact on Retail Strategy: The growing reliance on mobile shopping necessitates that furniture retailers optimize mobile experiences to stay competitive.Growth in the Domestic Bedding Industry:Anti-Dumping Measures: The domestic bedding industry has seen a boost due to anti-dumping petitions against mattress imports from countries like Mexico, Italy, and the Philippines. This has led to increased domestic production, with international manufacturers relocating operations to the U.S.Challenges Persist: Despite reduced imports, the industry faces challenges like high inventory levels and low demand, influenced by economic factors such as high interest rates.Outlook: Companies are investing in expanding domestic manufacturing, with hopes for a market recovery by late 2024 or early 2025.Labor Day Sales: A Crucial Indicator:Industry Optimism: Labor Day sales are seen as a pivotal moment for the furniture industry, which has struggled with sluggish traffic throughout the year. A strong performance could signal a turnaround for late 2024.Economic Influences: Potential reductions in interest rates and a shift in discretionary spending from travel to home furnishings could boost sales.Price Sensitivity: Consumers are increasingly trading down to lower price points, pressuring margins but opening opportunities in mid-market segments.Rising Demand for American-Made Furniture:Consumer Preference: There is a growing trend towards American-made furniture, driven by factors like supply chain reliability, quality, and sustainability.Retailer Response: Retailers like Gallery Furniture and City Furniture are capitalizing on this trend by promoting the benefits of domestically produced goods, such as durability and environmental impact.Competitive Pricing: The narrowing price gap between domestic and imported furniture, due to rising import costs, is making American-made products more attractive to consumers.Coast to Coast Accents in Receivership:Financial Struggles: Coast to Coast Accents, a furniture importer, has entered receivership following defaults on credit agreements, leading to severe cash shortages and operational difficulties.Future Uncertainty: The appointed receiver will manage and possibly liquidate the company's assets, casting doubt on its future in the market.IKEA's Foray into the Secondhand Market:Buyback & Resell Program: IKEA's North Carolina store has introduced a dedicated space for preowned items, reflecting the growing trend towards sustainable and budget-conscious shopping.IKEA Preowned: The company is launching an online peer-to-peer marketplace, starting in test markets like Madrid and Oslo, with plans for global expansion. This initiative aligns with IKEA's commitment to sustainability and affordability. Conclusion: This week's developments highlight key shifts in the furniture industry, from the rise of mobile commerce and American-made furniture to significant challenges faced by importers and the growing secondhand market. The upcoming Labor Day sales will be crucial in determining the industry's trajectory as it heads into the final quarter of the year.

Joshua Miller from Proofpoint joins Dave to discuss findings on "Welcome to New York: Exploring TA453's Foray into LNKs and Mac Malware." In mid May, TA453, also known as Charming Kitten, APT42, Mint Sandstorm, and Yellow Garuda, was found sending a benign conversation lure masquerading as a senior fellow with the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) to the public media contact for a nuclear security expert at a US-based think tank focused on foreign affairs. The research states that "the email solicited feedback on a project called “Iran in the Global Security Context” and requested permission to send a draft for review." In this enlightening episode of the Packernet Podcast, aired on April 6, 1984, host Ryan Schlipp dives into a rich discussion on recent NFL rule changes, the draft guide, and the potential for global expansion. Schlipp shares Mark Murphy's insights and prepares listeners for an in-depth position analysis expected with the upcoming draft guide release. The conversation then pivots to a critique of the new ban on hip drop tackles, which Schlipp argues is overly broad and misses the mark on addressing the real issue at hand. As the episode progresses, frustration with NFL rule changes, especially concerning replay challenges, becomes a focal point. Schlipp proposes a "two strikes rule" to mitigate bad refereeing without leading to abuse of the challenge system. The discussion broadens to explore the NFL's international expansion ambitions, highlighting the potential in markets like Brazil, Sweden, and Tunisia, despite language barriers and logistical challenges. Attention then shifts to the NFL's venture into flag football, aiming to widen its fan base but sparking concerns over diminishing the traditional football essence. Schlipp also addresses NFL kickoffs and returns, calling out the recent kickoff rule changes for being hastily implemented and potentially risky. The latter part of the episode offers a deep dive into the Green Bay Packers' draft process, with Mark Murphy's role clarification and Brian Gutekunst's talent evaluation strategy coming to light. Schlipp criticizes the NFL's free agency strategy that often overlooks young talent for veterans, before moving on to discuss NFL draft prospects, visits, and overtime rules. Listeners are treated to a detailed analysis of draft prospects, with Schlipp highlighting underrated players and criticizing certain team strategies. The episode wraps up with a call to appreciate good coaching and the people behind the sport, making it a must-listen for NFL fans and enthusiasts eager for insights into the league's future directions and draft strategies.
