The LIUniverse with Dr. Charles Liu
A Scintillating Cosmic Conversation with Robert Sparks

The LIUniverse with Dr. Charles Liu

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 26, 2025 40:19

Have you ever wondered how data from the telescopes that peer into our universe ends up in the hands of the astronomers who interpret it? To find out, Dr. Charles Liu and co-host Allen Liu welcome Robert Sparks, currently from the NSF's NOIRLab, but previously Fermi Lab and the Sloan Sky Survey. The National Optical InfraRed Astronomy Research Lab is responsible for operating the National Science Foundation's ground based, nighttime optical and near infrared astronomy for the United States. Robert describes their Community Science Data Center which ties all the data from all their telescopes together to make it available for astronomers around the world to use in their research. As always, though, we start off with the day's joyfully cool cosmic thing, a project coming out of NOIRLab called 88 Constellations. Robert, who spearheaded the project, explains how the final, incredibly detailed image combined classic constellations and new, modern additions and covered the entire sky. One of his favorite parts of the project? Learning about the constellations in the southern hemisphere that doesn't get to see that often, like the Southern Cross. Chuck, Allen and Robert share some of their experiences stargazing down below, and yes, you know Chuck takes the opportunity to sing us a little Crosby, Stills and Nash! You'll also hear which constellation is the smallest in the southern hemisphere, Crux (the Southern Cross) or Delphinus. Then it's on to audience questions. Our first comes from Amirah, who asks, “Blue stars are hotter than red stars, so does that mean blue light bulbs are hotter than red light bulbs? Why would something's color matter about how hot something is?” The short answer: yes (pre-LED, that is!) Robert's long answer involves black body radiation, the electromagnetic spectrum, and red giant carbon stars. Rob shares stories from a career that bridges astronomy and particle physics, including how he got his hands on some original scintillator material from particle detectors at Fermi Lab. (Check out The LIUniverse on Patreon for a scintillating deep dive into…well, scintillation!) The next audience question, from Bryan, is particularly relevant to the discussion: How do astronomy and physics work together? In many, ways, as Robert and Chuck explain. Allen shares the story of the discovery of the element Helium, which was first discovered in the Sun by astronomers, hence its name. You'll also get to hear about Robert's 38-year-long career in improv comedy – and get to watch him (and his cat) act out scenes prompted by Chuck. Finally, we've got one last audience question from Jerry, who says, “I live really far away from the city and I don't have a telescope. What's the best way for me to do astronomy research?” Robert, who grew up in Iowa, tells Jerry about citizen science astronomy projects he can get involved like those at The Zooniverse. You'll hear about how, while working at a program there known as the Galaxy Zoo, a Dutch schoolteacher named Hanny Van Arkel discovered a weird light echo from a quasar that is now known as “Hanny's Voorwep” (Hanny's Object).   If you'd like to find out more about NOIRLab, the National Optical InfraRed Astronomy Research Lab, check out their website. To keep up with Robert Sparks, you can follow him @halfastro on Bluesky, Threads, Flikr, and Instagram. As we continue our promise to put out regular shows (whistles self-consciously), it was with much delayed anticipation that we reached out to Master Printer and user of all film formats from half frame to 20x16 Mr Andrew Sanderson who agreed to come and chat with us. Although Andrew confesses his website isn't up to date here is the intro bio from that site. “Photographer, master printer, author and tutor. One of the UK's leading Photographers and a master printer, Andrew has written the definitive book on Night Photography: A Practical Manual; the highly acclaimed Home Photography: Inspiration on Your Doorstep and; is a regular contributor to photographic magazines in the U.K. He is an Ilford Master Printer, and regularly gives workshops to university tutors, students and private individuals. Andrew is recognised as the leading practitioner of the paper negative process and one of the world's best hand colourists. Examples of both of these techniques can be found in his third book; Hand Colouring and Alternative Darkroom Processes” See below for links to all four of Andrew's books including the recently updated book from Blurb on paper negatives.     Things we chatted about on the show:   Andrew kicked off the show by mentioning an obscure fact about Andrew Sanderson and Gene Nokon – Gene was the man behind popularising if not first inventing f-stop printing and Erik found this YouTube video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoAiBNSpg6Y   You can also purchase copies of Gene's book but like many out of print titles it can be expensive so keep a watch. https://www.abebooks.co.uk/book-search/title/photographic-printing/author/nocon-gene/   Erik uses Arista 3.0 Ortho Litho film and their EDU sheet film in various sizes – go to the Freestyle website for more info. https://www.freestylephoto.com/531451-Arista-Ortho-Litho-Film-3.0-4x5-100-Sheets   Andrew's books. https://www.blurb.co.uk/b/9673228-paper-negative-photography?fbclid=IwY2xjawGsBzFleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHTl7pBmkQKJe5_2nrsw1WIjerws8J8xw5Bi4AkSGaqZQg4lY78xK_g8C4w_aem_0Rh3eAGch4cpEfCxZjljmg   Andrew's other three books are out of print but still available via, WOB, Better World Books, AbeBooks or Ebay   “Night Photography” Argentum Press ISBN 1-902538-12-9   “Home Photography – Inspiration on your doorstep” ISBN 0-8174-3989-7   and   https://www.amazon.co.uk/Handcolouring-Alternative-Darkroom-Processes-Photo-lab/dp/2880465516   Fellow Master Printer Robin Bell was mentioned – Andrew Bartram has a DVD called “The Silver Footprint – the art of Robin Bell Master Printer” A documentary by Richard Dunkley – you may need to shop around a bit.   There is a book also but also expensive – Silver Footprint.   We discussed the unique properties of the Ilford Art 300 darkroom paper. https://www.ilfordphoto.com/multigrade-art-300-sheets   Andrew recently reviewed his growing print collection, it's useful toget help so he asked his friend and fellow photographer Matt Lathbridge to assist. With the full gang back together it was a pleasure to get to talk to Nick Carver about his love for 6x17 large format photography, his recent commissioned trip to Spain, other formats to boost the creative juices, his You Tube Channel and much more.   If you're not familiar with Nick and his work then here is a part of his bio from his website. “Nick Carver is a working photographer and photography instructor based in Orange County, CA. His professional work centres primarily on architectural photography for commercial properties (office buildings, industrial buildings, retail centres, hospitality), and through his online photography courses Nick delivers instruction to hundreds of students in over 30 countries. Nick's career reflects a deep-seated dedication to the craft of photography with an enthusiasm for traditional analogue film. You may recognize him from his YouTube channel wherein he takes viewers into the classroom and out in the field to share the process behind his work”     Things we chatted about on the show:   We were talking about modern lights on buildings and how LEDs were ruining the character and atmosphere for us film photographers. Nick mentioned Technology Connections, an interesting You Tube Channel that picks apart and explains all sorts of modern and older tech ideas and explains them simply, they have some film photography videos there amongst a whole bunch of interesting topics. https://www.youtube.com/@TechnologyConnections/videos   Although Nick started with a 6x17 back he explains how he found it ultimately limiting so now has a dedicated Shen Hao 617 camera, if you want one too like Andrew does then head over to their website. If you're in the USA then Badger Graphic are the importers of these and many other format iterations of these Chinese built large format cameras. http://www.shen-hao.com/ https://www.badgergraphic.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=2   Simon mentioned the upcoming “Mersey Meetup” on 25th May, this one focuses on the back alleyways and unexplored side streets of Liverpool. These events are organised by Steve Starr and if you want to attend then turn up outside Lime Street Station in Liverpool at 10.30. Steve is on social media platforms usually as @stigofthedump. You can sign up via the excellent Photowalk.me website here: https://www.photowalk.me/photowalk/back-street-luv-with-merseymeetup   If you want to get started with 6x17 photography using your large format camera then probably the best option is to head over to Steve Lloyd's site at Chroma Camera. As well as hand held 617 options he offers a dedicated roll film back for your camera. https://chroma.camera/products/complete-graflok-6x17-adaptor-rollfilm-back-and-ground-glass-set       Nick's links   Nicks YouTube channel. https://www.youtube.com/@nickcarverphoto   Website. https://www.nickcarverphotography.com/       LFPP links - https://largeformatphotographypodcast.podbean.com/ ko-fi.com/largeformatphotographypodcast   You can join in the fun at our Facebook Group. https://www.facebook.com/groups/2296599290564807/   And now our Flikr group curated by Colin Devroe. https://www.flickr.com/groups/lfpp/   Twitter updates from Simon. https://twitter.com/simonfor   Email feedback, ideas and questions for the podcast largeformatphotographypodcast@gmail.com   Podcast Hosts Social Media presence   Simon Forster www.simonforsterphotographic.co.uk https://stores.ebay.co.uk/itsfozzyphotography https://www.flickr.com/photos/125323761@N07/ https://www.facebook.com/SimonForsterPhotographic/ https://www.instagram.com/simonforsterphotographic/ https://twitter.com/SimonFor   Andrew Bartram https://anchor.fm/thelenslesspodcast https://andrewbartram.wordpress.com https://www.instagram.com/warboyssnapper https://www.instagram.com/warboyssnapper_pinholes https://www.flickr.com/photos/warboyssnapper/   Erik Mathy A not updated website. https://www.erikmathy.com/about   IG probably best for all things including rabbits. https://www.instagram.com/erikhmathy/?hl=en   The East Bay Photo Collective https://www.ebpco.org/

#66 On Safari With The 120ist   In so many ways this show episode typifies what we love about making this podcast – it was just like being in a pub (or coffee shop) and having a chat with like minded folk about, mostly, large format photography.  The fact that the conversation wanders around is exactly what happens when you have enthusiastic guests and hosts getting together to ponder the thing that occupies their minds for most of the time.   Nick Davis is better known for his YouTube channel the 120ist – contrary to the title it isn't just medium format film and cameras that feeds his content but his sheer love for film, the process, the ideas, creativity, trying new things and explaining what he's doing in a “come and learn with me” approach.     Things we chatted about on the show:   Zebra Plates and various other LF related accessories for wet and dry plate working. https://zebradryplates.com/   “Mr Zebra” has a really good You Tube Channel that's worth checking out too. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=lost+art+light   Nick recently purchased a pack of Zebra Tintypes and his latest video shows how he got on – here is a link to learn more about the history of Tintypes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tintype   And if you want to make your own….. https://www.alternativephotography.com/the-modern-tintype-process/   Guy Bellingham (former guest) and local to Nick gets a mention by Simon for the excellent video content on his You Tube channel. https://www.youtube.com/@guybellinghamphotography1290   The conversation wanders off to photographers who influence us, who we admire and some books about the “why” of photography.   Jason Lane. https://www.pictoriographica.com/store/c5/www.pictoriographica.com/store/c5/All_Production_Dry_Plates.html   Ben Horne. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=ben+horne     James Fee. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Fee   Some books…….   Photography Workshop Series are excellent and published by Aperture. https://www.wob.com/en-gb/category/all?search=photography%20workshop%20aperture   Richard Misrach Desert and Border Cantos – search for best deals and availability.   Nick mentioned “Landscape Within” if you are struggling with your landscape photography. https://www.wob.com/en-gb/books/david-ward/landscape-within/9781902538341?cq_src=google_ads&cq_cmp=18129456947&cq_con=&cq_med=pla&cq_plac=&cq_net=x&gclid=CjwKCAjwgsqoBhBNEiwAwe5w0806MS1qxE2OJykACJe-LXBPE0QOjVTUpWbF8XYO5nodmWF8t4AoIRoCfn0QAvD_BwE#GOR005425058   When we were discussing darkroom spaces and Guy Bellingham – Negative Spaces came up. https://negative-thinking.myshopify.com/     Nick's links   Nicks YouTube channel. https://www.youtube.com/@the120ist   Website. https://www.the120.ist/       LFPP links - https://largeformatphotographypodcast.podbean.com/ ko-fi.com/largeformatphotographypodcast   You can join in the fun at our Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/2296599290564807/   And now our Flikr group curated by Colin Devroe https://www.flickr.com/groups/lfpp/   Get Twitter updates for the show from Andrew – https://twitter.com/warboyssnapper   Or from Simon – https://twitter.com/simonfor   Email feedback, ideas and questions for the podcast largeformatphotographypodcast@gmail.com   Podcast Hosts Social Media presence   Simon Forster www.simonforsterphotographic.co.uk https://stores.ebay.co.uk/itsfozzyphotography https://www.flickr.com/photos/125323761@N07/ https://www.facebook.com/SimonForsterPhotographic/ https://www.instagram.com/simonforsterphotographic/ https://twitter.com/SimonFor   Andrew Bartram https://anchor.fm/thelenslesspodcast https://andrewbartram.wordpress.com https://www.instagram.com/warboyssnapper https://www.instagram.com/warboyssnapper_pinholes https://www.flickr.com/photos/warboyssnapper/ https://twitter.com/warboyssnapper   Erik Mathy A not updated website. https://www.erikmathy.com/about   IG probably best for all things including rabbits. https://www.instagram.com/erikhmathy/?hl=en   The East Bay Photo Collective https://www.ebpco.org/

We first interviewed today's guest over 4 years ago, in fact he was our first proper guest to help us and our listeners along the “new to LF path”.  Show 2 with Graham Vasey is worth a listen as we touch on many interesting subjects, one area Simon and I wanted to return to was Graham's use of liquid emulsion on watercolour paper and that's pretty much what we covered in show 65. So thank you Graham for indulging us once again and we look forward to following up another topic in 4 years time.     Things we chatted about on the show:   We mentioned a few books that Graham has found useful. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Silver-Gelatin-Liquid-Photographic-Emulsions/dp/1902538153   This is probably the only printed definitive guide to using liquid emulsions and copies are getting more expensive, if you can get a copy then it's an excellent resource for all things “liquid emulsion”   After relistening to show 2 Simon went out and bought a copy of Fred Picker's book on the fine print, turns out its not the same one Andrew has, and Erik has neither (maybe he should make one). Anyway here are some links to both (shop around is my advice as some silly money is being asked for )   https://www.amazon.co.uk/Zone-VI-Workshop-Photography-Hardcover/dp/B00JYHSZE8/ref=sr_1_1?crid=389LBHG4EFQZP&keywords=fred+picker&qid=1690189053&s=books&sprefix=fred+picker%2Cstripbooks%2C75&sr=1-1   https://www.amazon.co.uk/Fine-Print-Fred-Picker-1975-08-02/dp/B01K3NHYJS/ref=sr_1_2?crid=389LBHG4EFQZP&keywords=fred+picker&qid=1690189173&s=books&sprefix=fred+picker%2Cstripbooks%2C75&sr=1-2   Graham mentioned several commercially available liquid emulsions from Rollei, Forte, Fotospeed and Foma – the latter is his favourite.   https://www.foma.cz/en/catalogue-photographic-emulsion-detail-1082   https://parallaxphotographic.coop/shop/foma-photo-emulsion-250g/   Graham found that 300g NOT watercolour paper from Bockingford works well. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bockingford-300gsm-Watercolour-Spiral-180mm/dp/B008OVA49Y/ref=asc_df_B008OVA49Y?tag=bingshoppinga-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=80058247183242&hvnetw=o&hvqmt=e&hvbmt=be&hvdev=c&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=&hvtargid=pla-4583657823004312&psc=1   Graham's links   Best to head over to IG as his website is a bit broken. https://www.instagram.com/graham_vasey_photography/   https://www.instagram.com/the_black_tor/     Graham's work is represented in a local arty gallery – take a look https://www.gallerina.co.uk/graham-vasey     Graham's film work can be hunted down on YouTube and Vimeo but here is an interesting insight into what we have been talking about in show 65 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Io9WjR826k       LFPP links - https://largeformatphotographypodcast.podbean.com/ ko-fi.com/largeformatphotographypodcast   You can join in the fun at our Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/2296599290564807/   And now our Flikr group curated by Colin Devroe https://www.flickr.com/groups/lfpp/   Get Twitter updates for the show from Andrew – https://twitter.com/warboyssnapper   Or from Simon – https://twitter.com/simonfor   Email feedback, ideas and questions for the podcast largeformatphotographypodcast@gmail.com   Podcast Hosts Social Media presence   Simon Forster www.classiclensespodcast.com www.simonforsterphotographic.co.uk https://stores.ebay.co.uk/itsfozzyphotography https://www.flickr.com/photos/125323761@N07/ https://www.facebook.com/SimonForsterPhotographic/ https://www.instagram.com/simonforsterphotographic/ https://twitter.com/SimonFor   Andrew Bartram https://anchor.fm/thelenslesspodcast https://andrewbartram.wordpress.com https://www.instagram.com/warboyssnapper https://www.instagram.com/warboyssnapper_pinholes https://www.flickr.com/photos/warboyssnapper/ https://twitter.com/warboyssnapper   Erik Mathy A not updated website. https://www.erikmathy.com/about   IG probably best for all things including rabbits. https://www.instagram.com/erikhmathy/?hl=en   The East Bay Photo Collective https://www.ebpco.org/

#64 The Hell of the North   Our second catch up show of the year once again saw the return of Simon to the fold who, it turns out, has had sufficient time off to be reinvigorated and enthused for all things LFPP. What does that mean? Well, more shows we hope, at least three a year……   Things we chatted about on the show: As we didn't have a guest on show 63 Simon kicked things off by thanking those who had so very kindly sent in Ko-Fi donations (see link to the LFPP Ko-Fi site somewhere at the end of these notes) with nice words as well. So very appreciated and well, considering we haven't had a show out since, a tad humbling.   One of the donors to the show mentioned Conflict Cameras who are making superb progress with an auto focus large format camera, I know, right! The mind boggles. Anyway follow along here whilst we see if they can be a guest on the show. https://www.instagram.com/conflict.cameras/   Simon had just come back from another “#MerseyMeetup” organised by the nicest Liverpudlian we know Steve Starr https://twitter.com/Stig_Ofthedump   George Walsh was there, we spoke about George and his repairs to Graflex cameras back on show 63 and George is another guest we have lined up.  George's Facebook details are here:  (18) George Walsh | Facebook should you have a similar request.   Erik brought us up to date with his large format photo journalist escapades on the Paris to Roubaix cycle race in Northern France, this race was named “The Hell of the North” by those who took part in its inaugural 1919 outing, just one year after the WW1 Armistice when the land was, well, like hell on earth. #63 Return of The Prodigal Gearhead   We have been waiting for the return of our beloved Simon to the podcast for some time now, so a threesome to kick off the new year of 2023 was a perfect opportunity for us all to have a catch-up and hopefully make Simon realise he misses this whole podcast thing and there's more to life than the 3d printing of camera accessaries.   As things turned out we didn't get to cover everything we had planned, even Erik only managed a couple of swear words such was the focus on what Simon has been up to.   Anyway, that's good as it means we will almost certainly have a follow up……   Things we chatted about on the show: Our conversation was a tad shorter than usual due to Erik not being able to get out of bed, however, it was enough time for Simon to bear his soul and admit he doesn't really know anything about photography. OK, a bit harsh but once you've listened you will see what I mean.  His lovely MPP MicroPress, partnered with a Bronica S mount (6x6 medium format camera) Nikon (Nick-on) 25cm f/4 lens and the wonderful edge “otherworldliness” was the focus of a lot of chatter as he has now had it serviced (the MPP) by George Walsh – George's social media details are here, should you have a similar request.   https://www.facebook.com/george.walsh.35513   www.instagram.com/gwalshphotography/     Earlier in 2022 Simon shared some photos from a LF trip he had in Snowdonia, a bit of a turning point for him really as the blank images he returned with made him realise he had to make things a bit simpler and not try too many new things at once.   In fact it was a photowalk with Simon's friend, Christopher McKie, during a photo walk with Simon around the Queen Street Mill in Burnley with just one camera that Simon realised 1) HP5 is actually a pretty good emulsion and doesn't have to be grainy and 2) It makes nice prints in HC110 dilution B.   So you have a combination that you like why change and indeed why not focus on that combo in LF?   More chatter followed………   Erik briefly told us about the million lens elements friend of the show Jason Lane sent him. Jason is the man behind J Lane dry plates and is also an optical engineer. He is currently looking to restart coating more dry plates as life has gotten in the way. https://www.pictoriographica.com/store/c5/www.pictoriographica.com/store/c5/All_Production_Dry_Plates.html   Steve Lloyd invariably gets a mention on pretty much every show (don't think we have seen that endorsement fee yet Steve). This time when Simon mentioned Dave Whenham and his lovely night time images made with Steve's snapshot camera. Dave in Elland (@elland_in) / Twitter Dave Whenham (@dave_in_elland) • Instagram photos and videos (18) Dave Elland | Facebook   Erik also mentioned the new Jason Lane designed single element lens Steve has recently launched for thread mount Leica things. From Simon's website -  “I specialise in analogue and alternative forms of photography, this is my passion.  Currently, I'm immersed in practicing the art of Victorian wet plate photography, invented in 1851 the process is still to be rivalled today.  There are only a small number of people worldwide practicing wet plate. I became an artist in 2016, travelling through various analogue and darkroom disciplines.  In 2021 I won a global wedding award for my natural portraiture.  I also worked closely with Channel 4 on the set of SAS: Who Dares Wins.    I have a bespoke studio and darkroom located at the top of the picturesque Nigg Hill, Ross-Shire, in the Scottish Highlands.  The rest of my time is spent in the Isle of Skye, where I'm currently immersed in the Skye Collodion Project”.   And….. so very much we didn't talk about.   If he survives his daring adventure up a mountain, in December, with wet collodion…..then I'm sure we will have him back on to finish the story…….   With Simon though, we are not at all sure there will be an ending in sight.     Things we chatted about on the show:   Andrew met Simon at the Photography Show in Birmingham and sat in awe as he presented some images from his widely publicised “Mental Collodion” body of work. If you aren't familiar with this visual exploration of one man's recovery from depression and PTSD then maybe take a look at these links. MentalCollodion with Simon Riddell (srfilmphotography.co.uk) Introducing MentalCollodion: Shining light on mental health struggles - EMULSIVE   As we knew Simon was embarking on a project called #PeakPerserverence and that part of this “adventure” would involve filming a documentary with footage from the trip and interviews with mental health professionals we thought we would start there.   Simon is trying to raise some extra cash for the trip and has a Go Fund Me page which explain more about the project. https://www.srfilmphotography.co.uk/peakperseverance https://www.gofundme.com/f/peak-perseverance-documentary     One of the therapies Simon has used with great success is EMDR, we didn't really go into any detail in the chat but here is a link. What is EMDR? - EMDR Institute - EYE MOVEMENT DESENSITIZATION AND REPROCESSING THERAPY   Simon and his fellow adventurers will spend time on the Cuillin Ridge helped by Mountain Guide Adrian Trendall – you can read more about this environment and Adrian here. All Things Cuillin   One (and there are a few) of the challenges of using wet plates on a mountain, in December is the lack of washing water so he has asked Steve at Chroma Camera to make a “holding tank” for his plates, which can be filled with water to stabilise the exposed plates for later washing. Chroma Camera Ltd   Our Erik mentioned this Eric – who also does things up mountains. Eric Bouvet | Paris | Facebook   Simon has had lots of help and encouragement from Markus Hofstatter, Borut Peterlin and Shane Balkowitsch. #62 Sammy the Afghan Camera Lady   Erik and Andrew are joined by the force of nature known as the Afghan Camera Lady for an enjoyable natter.   Sammy has a background in commercial photography but with the help of her local analogue photography group Leicester LoFi became obsessed with the Afghan box camera.   Currently Sammy takes her huge “portable darkroom and studio” camera to festivals and weddings to make unique “instant” portraits.   Bursting with enthusiasm and ideas for how she might develop her work Sammy made our life easy for this recording.     Things we chatted about on the show:   When Sammy lived in Leicester she discovered they had an Afghan Box Camera and decided there and then that “it was a camera to match her personality”. www.leicesterlofi.co.uk   For all things related to these wonderful cameras you should look at the Afghan Box Camera Project Website.   This project was initiated early in 2011 by Austrian artist Lukas Birk and Irish ethnographer Sean Foley. The aim of the project from the outset was to create an urgent record of the disappearing art of Afghan box camera photography and make that information freely available online for all. Funding for the project in 2011 as in 2012 came primarily via crowdfunding on the KICKSTARTER website. The Visual Anthropology Dept. at Goldsmiths University, London has also contributed funding. Afghan Box Camera Project   The discussion turned at some point to the “6 degrees of separation” that led to Erik being a co-host on the show so we ended up talking about the work of former guests Wayne Martin Belger and Jenny Sampson. Fr. Eric Nicolai preaches this meditation in Lyncroft centre, Oct 17, 2021. Jn 6, 25-27: When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not labour for the food which perishes, but the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of man will give to you; for on him has God the Father set his seal.” Formation helps us to focus and understand what is really true about our life. Not just about what we feel. Sometimes we might just feel something. Ongoing formation helps us to see the signs of human vision, too much feeling, too much emotion, too much human vision. What really is your focus? What have you come here to look for? The food that perishes? Mere impressions? The impression you make on others? Being well thought of? Or the food that will lead to eternal life? Music: Handel Opera Rinaldo, aria “Lascia ch'io pianga”, arranged for guitar by Bert Alink. There is much, much more to Sandy than his work developing PyrocatHD and today we scratch away at the surface.     Sandy's links http://www.sandykingphotography.com/     Things we chatted about on the show: As we are chatting I can see Erik Mathy moving his fingers over his keyboard as he sends links to us all via our messenger chat . #56 Erik & The Tubers   Just over twelve months ago, Andrew and Simon were joined by the wonderful Jenny Sampson after being spotted on the front page of the relatively obscure BBC.co.uk website with a striking wet plate image. During an excellent discussion of Jenny's work, we touched upon and fell over Jenny's description of her collaboration with the Rolls & Tubes Collective; a group of photographers taking the inexplicable Covid related toilet roll shortage and recreating some of photography's greatest moments with bog roll. An excellent body of work was created and now Jenny along with Colleen Mullins, Christy McDonald and Nicole White have a sold out publication and success beyond their wildest dreams. Kelly-Ann Bobb is an analogue freelance photographer based in the twin island state of Trinidad and Tobago. She has always had a natural inclination towards creativity. After completing medical school, she fell in love with the unending complexities of film photography. She utilizes photography as a tool of unmasking, telling stories that would not otherwise be told. Revealing as much of herself as the subjects she photographs.   Kelly's links   https://www.kellyannbobb.com/   https://www.instagram.com/kellyannbobb_photography/       Things we chatted about on the show:   We spent a fair part of the time talking about two of Kelly's projects that have received widespread acclaim.“Home Alone” and “Sacred Bodies and the Divine” – go to Kelly's IG page to see examples.   https://www.tokyofotoawards.jp/winners/social/2020/Sacred-Bodies-1/   https://www.lensculture.com/search/projects?q=kelly-ann+bobb   The “Home Alone” project was born out of lockdown and explores how we handle solitude – its more than that so listen to the show as Kelly explains it better.   Gum Oil printing – Kelly shared her experiences and love for all things alternative print making.   Both Kelly and Erik recommend the work of Anna Ostania for all things gum oil. https://annaostanina.com/?fbclid=IwAR15CjB-AIrjIBK6Rj3BkRAkgEBCA7cukNciL7uprBqtQ1k6kgQ_NpNursE   We had a fascinating conversation about how traditional colour film was balances around pale Caucasian skin. The Large Format Photography Podcast

Just the three of us this week as we recover from the trip to Dave Shrimpton's house. This was meant to be more of an email show but there was really only one we could read out and that was just a brilliant one from Pakistan based visual artist Jahanzeb Haroon.   Things we chatted about on the show:   Andrew kicked off the discussion with “what we've all been up to”. Shamefully but rationally explained, no LF work from him for ages. The darkroom extension has been an all consuming project and with the first paying workshop customer coming in August the pressure has been on to at least get it functional, and it is now.   Returning from a holiday in Northumberland Andrew has a number of rolls of fil m to develop including 4 or 5 127 films, some HP5 and a roll of expired Astia that he exposed in his Toyo 45a with the 6x17 back. The question goes begging “do we or should we take large format gear on a family holiday”?   Another reason for not exposing too much LF film recently is the need to nail down rotary processing in his Jobo CPE2 or the new variable speed rotating base recently received from Student Photo Store on ebay.  Settling down to PyrocatHD and ID111+1 will reduce the creative choices, and darkroom is needed to play around.   Earlier in the year Mat Marrash posted a video all about determining your own personal film speed and “normal” developing time  using a Stouffer TP45 step wedge, after years of doing this by trial and error Andrew has taken the plunge and ordered a step wedge. Mat's video and a link to the Stouffer site below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pN-LM1lM8Kg&t=1005s   https://stouffer.net/Photo.htm#:~:text=Stouffer%20Craftsmanship%20Transmission%20Projection%20%28TP%29%20Step%20Wedges%20are,concept%20used%20when%20approaching%20the%20art%20of%20photography.   Both Erik and Simon have been up to way more exciting things, actually exposing and playing around with LF film and paper.   Erik has been deep diving into lens building with Bronica ETRS lenses and more (see Erik's IG site below).   Erik posted into the LFPP Facebook group ongoing work with Faux Orotones with some lovely results. The Orotone process was made famous by Edward Curtis and more info can be found on line (OK Wikipedia to the rescue) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orotone   Erik is looking for a similar effect using gold spray paint and it works really well.   Simon has been busy using his Chroma camera both in and out of the studio with some expired velvia and, in the 6 towns studio, some Harman Direct Positive paper. We have a chat about the challenges of using HDP and its limited tonal range (high contrast). The Ilford PDF data sheet and a recent Ilford video presented by Rachel Brewster-Wright are very helpful if you are thinking of using this great paper for the first time.   https://www.ilfordphoto.com/harman-direct-positive-paper-sheets   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFUSiRwfOHs   On the subject of film speed testing friend of the show Billy Sanford recently appeared on the Sunny 16 presents show and talked about his experience with a Richard Pickup approach to film speed testing – he actually cited our LFPP interview with Richard as inspiration.   https://sunny16presents.podbean.com/e/on-location-the-goldilocks-negative-with-billy-sanford/   LFPP listener and FB member Jahenzeb Haroon sent in a lovely email talking all about analogue photography in Pakistan, it's a great email and do check out Jahenzeb's work which he produces very much against the odds. We take off our collective hats and not in his direction. https://www.instagram.com/junk.lab/   And this link all about one of Pakistan's oldest photography practices that is still going. https://www.globalvillagespace.com/zaidis-photographers-pakistans-majestic-kaliedoscope/?fbclid=IwAR3nBFNa8cvo6sJvdxDykAR0MziXteY0Ep05OiOItZHQ5adntspdyGXhkWM       LFPP links -   https://largeformatphotographypodcast.podbean.com/   ko-fi.com/largeformatphotographypodcast   You can join in the fun at our Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/2296599290564807/   And now our Flikr group curated by Colin Devroe https://www.flickr.com/groups/lfpp/   Get Twitter updates for the show from Andrew – https://twitter.com/warboyssnapper   Or from Simon – https://twitter.com/simonfor   Email feedback, ideas and questions for the podcast largeformatphotographypodcast@gmail.com   Podcast Hosts Social Media presence   Simon Forster www.classiclensespodcast.com   www.simonforsterphotographic.co.uk   https://stores.ebay.co.uk/itsfozzyphotography   https://www.flickr.com/photos/125323761@N07/   https://www.facebook.com/SimonForsterPhotographic/   https://www.instagram.com/simonforsterphotographic/   https://twitter.com/SimonFor   Andrew Bartram https://anchor.fm/thelenslesspodcast   https://andrewbartram.wordpress.com   https://www.instagram.com/warboyssnapper   https://www.instagram.com/warboyssnapper_pinholes   https://www.flickr.com/photos/warboyssnapper/   https://twitter.com/warboyssnapper   Erik Mathy A not updated website. https://www.erikmathy.com/about   IG probably best for all things including rabbits. https://www.instagram.com/erikhmathy/?hl=en   Stay Safe

Now that we don’t have the “bar room” chatter at the beginning of each show these occasional catch up shows allow us to update each other on all that we’ve been up to large format wise, or not, as the case may be.   So no guest but, “dang” we enjoyed shooting the breeze and the welcome return of “Ask Erik”.    Things we chatted about on the show:   Andrew has been in a bit of a photo slump for a few weeks now, and that’s really odd as it’s completely out of character. Dr Erik tries to diagnose his problems.   Both Andrew and Erik have been playing around with previous guest Jason Lane’s excellent dry plates. Andrew has been using the ISO 25 (shot at ISO 6) 1/6th (easier to type it than say it) plates in his Rolleiflex and developing with ID11 1+1 with minimal agitation to give some control over contrast. Seems to be working well which is more than can be said for his attempts so far with 4x5 ISO 2 plates – still more light needed methinks but we discuss some hints and tips.   Erik has started a little project photographing cars on driveways in his new neighbourhood as a commentary on all things American (way too deep for Simon and Andrew but we humour him).   You can find out all about Jason’s plates here, where to buy them and lots of useful technical detail to help get best results (which Andrew needs to read apparently). https://www.pictoriographica.com/   Simon, surprise, surprise, has been buying more cameras this time it’s a Polaroid roll film camera that he will be converting to take 4x5 sheets. Lots of folk convert these cameras but Simon is ignoring all their advice and ploughing his own furrow so we look forward to how that turns out.   Erik mentioned a Thingyverse downloadable set of files for 4x5 conversion – a really great website where you can purchase the thing as a kit if you don’t have access to a 3D printer. https://film.kolve.org/3ddesign/3d-design-polaroid-110-to-4x5-conversion-kit/?fbclid=IwAR2Bngul7kjpMMcMoJqeacujr3KfURzcJlcWr7Mg-1v-7jBf3JeYIz3vCzs       Simon also purchased a French enlarger lens to use on his graphic camera (maybe) – a Boyer Saphir. These series of lenses are M39 mount and are named after a variety of precious stones (don’t ask). https://galerie-photo.com/boyer-lens-optic.html?fbclid=IwAR1weHjMeJR9kA6V2JkDYPR2ZoIQz6CA-xt2QsmfEckDoWhyL1X2yUkkTQ8   Andrew mentioned David Lago de Montana from the RB67 FB group who is making Instax Square backs for the RB – OK not LF but it formed part of a discussion around 4x5 conversions. If you want to learn more here is a FB link. https://www.facebook.com/groups/166020020119888/search/?q=david%20lago%20de%20monta%C3%B1a     With the triumphant return of “ASK ERIK” emails from;   Ian Wallace Instagram & Twitter @ian_onahillroad   William Furniss IG @williamfurniss   And a shout out to John Farnan https://twitter.com/johnfphotos https://m.facebook.com/farnanj LFPP links -   https://largeformatphotographypodcast.podbean.com/   ko-fi.com/largeformatphotographypodcast   You can join in the fun at our Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/2296599290564807/   And now our Flikr group curated by Colin Devroe https://www.flickr.com/groups/lfpp/   Get Twitter updates for the show from Andrew – https://twitter.com/warboyssnapper   Or from Simon – https://twitter.com/simonfor   Email feedback, ideas and questions for the podcast largeformatphotographypodcast@gmail.com   Podcast Hosts Social Media presence   Simon Forster www.classiclensespodcast.com   www.simonforsterphotographic.co.uk   https://stores.ebay.co.uk/itsfozzyphotography   https://www.flickr.com/photos/125323761@N07/   https://www.facebook.com/SimonForsterPhotographic/   https://www.instagram.com/simonforsterphotographic/   https://twitter.com/SimonFor   Andrew Bartram https://anchor.fm/thelenslesspodcast   https://andrewbartram.wordpress.com   https://www.instagram.com/warboyssnapper   https://www.instagram.com/warboyssnapper_pinholes   https://www.flickr.com/photos/warboyssnapper/   https://twitter.com/warboyssnapper   Erik Mathy A not updated website. https://www.erikmathy.com/about   IG probably best for all things including rabbits. https://www.instagram.com/erikhmathy/?hl=en   Stay Safe

There are some excellent resources including the Mr Pinhole site which is invaluable if you are thinking of making your own pinhole portrait camera.  http://mrpinhole.com/   Friend of the show Jason Lane came up a few times as Nicole, Erik and Andrew are all trying to get to grips with his wonderful J Lane dry plates. https://www.pictoriographica.com/   Go to Jason’s website for useful info on using the plates under differing lighting conditions.   We go into some discussions about reversal processing, Nicole uses potassium dichromate bleach followed by exposure to light then fixing and second development. When the USA National Park Service advertised for a large format photographer to come and work for them there were 4,500 applicants. Jarob Ortiz sent in his resume and, along with 18 others got through to interview stage and landed the dream job.   Things we chatted about on the show:   Before landing the job Jarob was already photographing historic buildings for his personal work – the town of Gary in Indiana for example. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary,_Indiana#National_Register_of_Historic_Places   We discussed the latest on the Reveni Labs spotmeter on Kickstarter now massively over subscribed but (as I type) still active.  https://www.reveni-labs.com/spotmeter   We discovered that it’s really hard to see much of Jarob’s work for the Park Service in a digital form as they are a tad behind on the scanning front but you can go look at all sorts of interesting things at the Heritage Documentation Program site. The permanent collection of architectural, engineering and landscape documentation at the Library of Congress consists of measured and interpretive drawings, large-format black and white and color photographs, written historical and descriptive data, and original field notes. The collection captures the American experience through approximately 40,000 recorded historic structures and sites, from American Indian cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde to space-age technology at Cape Canaveral. https://www.nps.gov/HDP/coll.htm   Although I was sceptical, there is a really interesting FB page too. https://www.facebook.com/HeritageDocumentationPrograms   We didn’t get to talk lenses which is odd but we did chat a bit about apparently clever digital cameras called Phase one (Simon seemed to know something about them). https://www.phaseone.com/en/   After the show, Jarob mentioned to us that he would have liked to have answered a question that we did not ask, so here's the question and answer; What advice do you have for large format photographers? It's great to draw inspiration from famous photographers and their technique, but it's far more important not to chase them. Everyone has their own approach, all of which is unique to that individual based upon their life experiences and the personality as a result. Like in my case.... People calling me "the next Ansel Adams" - give me a break! I'll never be Ansel Adams. Ansel was a master of the craft; a man that revolutionized the photographic process with his Zone System approach. I'll never be that. All we can do as photographers is workhard and hold ourselves to a higher standard and someday (hopefully) we'll be noticed.   Jarob’s links https://www.instagram.com/jarobortiz/     Other News   None to speak of…..   LFPP links -   https://largeformatphotographypodcast.podbean.com/   ko-fi.com/largeformatphotographypodcast   You can join in the fun at our Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/2296599290564807/   And now our Flikr group curated by Colin Devroe https://www.flickr.com/groups/lfpp/   Get Twitter updates for the show from Andrew – https://twitter.com/warboyssnapper   Or from Simon – https://twitter.com/simonfor   Email feedback, ideas and questions for the podcast largeformatphotographypodcast@gmail.com   Podcast Hosts Social Media presence   Simon Forster www.classiclensespodcast.com   www.simonforsterphotographic.co.uk   https://stores.ebay.co.uk/itsfozzyphotography   https://www.flickr.com/photos/125323761@N07/   https://www.facebook.com/SimonForsterPhotographic/   https://www.instagram.com/simonforsterphotographic/   https://twitter.com/SimonFor   Andrew Bartram https://anchor.fm/thelenslesspodcast   https://andrewbartram.wordpress.com   https://www.instagram.com/warboyssnapper   https://www.instagram.com/warboyssnapper_pinholes   https://www.flickr.com/photos/warboyssnapper/   https://twitter.com/warboyssnapper   Erik Mathy A not updated website. https://www.erikmathy.com/about   IG probably best for all things including rabbits. https://www.instagram.com/erikhmathy/?hl=en   Stay Safe

When Reveni Labs launched the Kickstarter for their innovative hot shoe mounted meter a couple of years ago it very quickly reached its funding goal. It was therefore no surprise that Matt’s latest Kickstarter was funded within 2 hours.   Things we chatted about on the show:   A fair chunk of time was spent answering some great emails from listeners and all four of us had things to say. Billy Sanford wrote to us following up our recent discussion around the need (or not) to post to social media and we kicked that around a bit more.   Michael Wellman sent in a great email , although we think he meant to send it to our good friend Matt Marrash , all about image circle. We focused all our joint knowledge and realised it didn’t add up to much but we had a stab at making some relevant points.   A couple of great books that cover this in some detail are:   Using The Viewcamera by Steve Simmons.   And View Camera Technique by Leslie Stroebel .   Aforementioned Matt Marrash put out a video covering this;  https://youtu.be/XkJ__N1Kl4M   Chris King wrote to us with some suggestions for LF press photographers, thanks Chris they are on our radar. Eric, Andrew and Simon together for the first proper podcast of the New Year, a time for reflection and looking ahead.   Things we chatted about on the show: Andrew got a bit philosophical about the addictive nature of social media and to post or not to post and why.   Eric thanked folks for showing up to his world premier (in the LFPP FB group) of his slow riding picture taking film.   “Amish” Gill and 35mmc came up somewhere and Simon talked about lens mounts for large format photography “wot he is making” – for barrel lenses, projector lenses etc.   Bar room chat, how do we still incorporate that part of the show now that there are four of us.   Diversity – not for “diversity’s sake” but to force us to widen our perspectives and, quite frankly, not to have too many guests who look and sound like us!     Other News   None to speak of.   LFPP links -   https://largeformatphotographypodcast.podbean.com/   ko-fi.com/largeformatphotographypodcast   You can join in the fun at our Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/2296599290564807/   And now our Flikr group curated by Colin Devroe https://www.flickr.com/groups/lfpp/   Get Twitter updates for the show from Andrew – https://twitter.com/warboyssnapper   Or from Simon – https://twitter.com/simonfor   Email feedback, ideas and questions for the podcast largeformatphotographypodcast@gmail.com   Podcast Hosts Social Media presence   Simon Forster www.classiclensespodcast.com   www.simonforsterphotographic.co.uk   https://stores.ebay.co.uk/itsfozzyphotography   https://www.flickr.com/photos/125323761@N07/   https://www.facebook.com/SimonForsterPhotographic/   https://www.instagram.com/simonforsterphotographic/   https://twitter.com/SimonFor   Andrew Bartram https://anchor.fm/thelenslesspodcast   https://andrewbartram.wordpress.com   https://www.instagram.com/warboyssnapper   https://www.instagram.com/warboyssnapper_pinholes   https://www.flickr.com/photos/warboyssnapper/   https://twitter.com/warboyssnapper     Erik Mathy A not updated website. https://www.erikmathy.com/about   IG probably best for all things including rabbits. https://www.instagram.com/erikhmathy/?hl=en

Andrew and Simon were all set to see out the year in peace and quiet but a voice from across the pond just wouldn’t let us rest. Kicking and screaming we were dragged from our respective bunkers to record one more show. Erik and Andrew were “on camera” but Simon chose to be the all seeing “Eye of Sauron” , and why not.   Things we chatted about on the show: Although we had planned to spend some time discussing the future direction of the Show Andrew and Eric took up so much time at the beginning we ran out of time, apparently Erik has a proper job that he sometimes has to go to.   Andrew was excited to talk about his new Chroma Snapshot camera from the super clever Steve Lloyd of Chroma Camera – check it out and much more here  https://chroma.camera/snapshot/   Simon tried to shoe horn is new Chroma Carbon Adventurer into the conversation but we all agreed it was far too orange to discuss in detail.   Along with the new Snapshot is coming in the post a Schneider Anngulon 90mm f6.8 which is a teeny weeny lens that just about covers 4x5 and is an ideal companion to the snapshot for handheld LF photography.   Thanks to Ben Reynolds https://www.facebook.com/BadBeard or Ren Beynolds as his may be known as well for sending Andrew a Grafmatic film holder which will also pair up nicely with the Snapshot.   Somewhow we moved on to barrel lenses and projector lenses. All three of us I think have the Leitz 200mm f3.6 mounted for 4x5 and whilst this set up is OK for paper negatives we eagerly await a commercial barrel lens shutter system like the one the aforementioned Steve Lloyd is developing.   Erik spoke about the lack of creative spaces in the Bay Area where he lives and the need for such spaces where photographers and printers can gather, use darkrooms, compare prints and generally hang out. Simon tried to convince us that the Six Towns Darkroom in Stoke on Trent , England was such a space but we all agreed it just doesn’t have the weather.   Simon gave a shout out to the spin off podcast “Sunny 16 Presents” and especially show all about Caffenol – here is a link https://sunny16presents.podbean.com/e/on-location-caffenol-with-christian-strauf-and-jonathon-becker/?fbclid=IwAR0_DZ5eqh6_BHnVVw9GLMZlLH4aVpKTHxzBDhdp3KaTaQ-xg2Z_Q6KZpLs   And finally join us on January 2nd for an exclusive LFPP FB Group screening of the Adobe Create documentary made all about Erik and his epic bicycle ride with a LF camera and dollar bill lens “Ride Slow, Take Photos”.     Other News   The Six Towns Darkroom was OPEN but is now CLOSED as Stoke enters Tier 3 Covid restrictions.       LFPP links -   https://largeformatphotographypodcast.podbean.com/   ko-fi.com/largeformatphotographypodcast   You can join in the fun at our Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/2296599290564807/   And now our Flikr group curated by Colin Devroe https://www.flickr.com/groups/lfpp/   Get Twitter updates for the show from Andrew – https://twitter.com/warboyssnapper   Or from Simon – https://twitter.com/simonfor   Email feedback, ideas and questions for the podcast largeformatphotographypodcast@gmail.com   Podcast Hosts Social Media presence   Simon Forster www.classiclensespodcast.com   www.simonforsterphotographic.co.uk   https://stores.ebay.co.uk/itsfozzyphotography   https://www.flickr.com/photos/125323761@N07/   https://www.facebook.com/SimonForsterPhotographic/   https://www.instagram.com/simonforsterphotographic/   https://twitter.com/SimonFor   Andrew Bartram https://anchor.fm/thelenslesspodcast   https://andrewbartram.wordpress.com   https://www.instagram.com/warboyssnapper   https://www.instagram.com/warboyssnapper_pinholes   https://www.flickr.com/photos/warboyssnapper/   https://twitter.com/warboyssnapper     Erik Mathy A not updated website. https://www.erikmathy.com/about   IG probably best for all things including rabbits. https://www.instagram.com/erikhmathy/?hl=en

#41 Nick Brandreath: Alternative Process Phantasmagoria

The Large Format Photography Podcast

From a recent interview with Intrepid Camera. “Nick Brandreth is the Historic Process Specialist at the George Eastman Museum, where he runs workshops that teach people how to create images using photographic techniques that span the whole of the medium’s history. The workshops provide alternative methods of creating images as opposed to simply buying consumer film for people who want to get their hands dirty. “With a lot of photography pre-1900, everything was made by hand,” Brandreth says. “You'd go out and purchase chemicals and mix 'em together and make your own material. And there was a culture, at the beginning of photography, where everything was made by hand. I think people like that.” Brandreth’s hands-on approach naturally suits the experimentation that large format photography offers. With the right attitude, the possibilities really are endless. “Because of the beauty of large format, you can Frankenstein a different lens with the camera and make your own format sizes,” Brandreth says. “It's the best. It's actually cheaper for me now because I have the skills and know-how, so I just make my own emulsion and all I have to pay for is raw material.” https://intrepidcamera.co.uk/blog/nick-brandreth-s-large-format-phantasmagoria   Things we chatted about on the show:   Nick attended a workshop at the George Eastman Museum on historical processes with Mark Osterman who we seem to mention every show – here is an interview by Robert Gojevic. https://www.robertgojevic.com/mark-osterman/   Soon after this Nick found himself working as Mark’s apprentice at the museum and now teaches anyone who cares to listen through workshops in person or, increasingly these days, via social media.   Nick’s recent work was informed by the historic “horror theatre” known as Phantasmagoria – Wikipedia comes to the rescue yet again. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phantasmagoria   The full interview with Intrepid Camera can be read and seen here. https://intrepidcamera.co.uk/blog/nick-brandreth-s-large-format-phantasmagoria   And all the images on Nick’s website. https://www.nickbrandreth.com/Seeing%20Shadows/ Nick’s earlier work after leaving college where he studied photojournalism, was influenced by the work of, amongst others, Eddie Adams (you will know the image of the Vietnam Police officer shooting a Vietcong member in the head in the street). https://www.eddieadamsworkshop.com/   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddie_Adams_(photographer)   If you have any questions about emulsion making then speak with Nick as he has mastered numerous techniques inspired by Ron Mowry and Nick tells the story of his now hard to find book at the end of the show. http://stores.photoformulary.com/photographic-emulsion-making-coating-and-testing-book-by-ron-mowrey/   If you don’t want to make your own emulsion you can buy it from a number of sources. Andrew uses (with mixed success so far) the Rollei Black Magic Nick mentions. If you are in the UK you can get it from Nova Darkroom and various others.   Mel Digiacomo was a mentor to Nick as he strived to express his photojournalist voice. Here is a YouTube video to watch when you have a spare hour or so. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHRoOMZjoE0   Erik spoke of Ed Drew’s Afghanistan LF work. https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/photography-blog/2013/jul/22/photography-art   And last but not lease Andrew bought a cool looking Chroma Camera Snapshot and Simon bought a Chroma Carbon Adventurer that is mostly orange. https://chroma.camera/product/snapshot-classic-edition/ https://chroma.camera/product/carbon-adventurer-carbon-fibre-technical-field-camera/       Nick’s links   Instagram seems to be the place where you can get the best sense of what Nick is up to on a day by day basis. https://www.instagram.com/nickbrandreth/   To see his “Seeking Shadows” and other work we touched on in the show go to his website. https://www.nickbrandreth.com/Home/       Other News   The Six Towns Darkroom was OPEN but is now CLOSED as Stoke enters Tier 3 Covid restrictions.   And watch out for a link if you want to join us for our next LFPP virtual gathering in the forest on Saturday December 5th.     LFPP links -   https://largeformatphotographypodcast.podbean.com/   ko-fi.com/largeformatphotographypodcast   You can join in the fun at our Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/2296599290564807/   And now our Flikr group curated by Colin Devroe https://www.flickr.com/groups/lfpp/   Get Twitter updates for the show from Andrew – https://twitter.com/warboyssnapper   Or from Simon – https://twitter.com/simonfor   Email feedback, ideas and questions for the podcast largeformatphotographypodcast@gmail.com   Podcast Hosts Social Media presence   Simon Forster www.classiclensespodcast.com   www.simonforsterphotographic.co.uk   https://stores.ebay.co.uk/itsfozzyphotography   https://www.flickr.com/photos/125323761@N07/   https://www.facebook.com/SimonForsterPhotographic/   https://www.instagram.com/simonforsterphotographic/   https://twitter.com/SimonFor   Andrew Bartram https://anchor.fm/thelenslesspodcast   https://andrewbartram.wordpress.com   https://www.instagram.com/warboyssnapper   https://www.instagram.com/warboyssnapper_pinholes   https://www.flickr.com/photos/warboyssnapper/   https://twitter.com/warboyssnapper     Erik Mathy A not updated website. https://www.erikmathy.com/about   IG probably best for all things including rabbits. https://www.instagram.com/erikhmathy/?hl=en

“A traditional photographer, Jim specialises in monochrome Carbon Transfer Contact Printing from in camera negatives. Carbon Transfer printing, a process perfected by Joseph Swan in 1864, is a highly labour intensive process that yields prints of the finest quality. The artist has total control of the image tonality due to the creative blending of pigments used to manufacture the carbon tissue which is used to complete his vision. From this tissue the image is born. Carbon prints require a minimum of four or more days work to produce one finished print. Truly a labor of love and passion. Jim teaches carbon transfer printing and offers workshops in his studio/darkroom at his home in Vancouver Washington”.    Things we chatted about on the show:   Jim got his inspiration from his friend Vaughn who runs workshops with Jim in Yosemite National Park. http://vaughnhutchins.com/   Making negatives from PyrocatHD a very popular staining developer much favoured by all who use alternative photographic processes. A first for the show, the same guest two weeks running. This time we tried to do the podcast intended for part one, did we succeed? I think so. We also discovered how good Erik is at reading and answering our listeners’ emails which we have cleverly called “Ask Erik”. From now on email reading and answering will be handled by someone who turns it into a kind of performance art.   Things we chatted about on the show:   “Rides Slow and Take Photos” web article for some background to Erik’s Butterfield overland mail trail bike ride. https://www.analogforevermagazine.com/features-interviews/film-review-ride-slow-take-pictures?fbclid=IwAR2EPCPIhFtwFzulEit7Jy-D2Qd7Ws3tnGSLIb3trteOZcprh_f1sTJqjNU   Erik sent us several links to things we chatted about on the show and some I don’t think we did! “My name is Erik Mathy, and I've been obsessed with photography since my Mom handed me her Pentax K1000 when I was 17. While I do own a digital camera or two, traditional methods are much more exciting to me from both an artistic and personal satisfaction standpoint. There is something about combining vision with hands on techniques and then being able to hold the end result up to the light that is incredibly satisfying”.   Well here is a show that didn’t go as planned, none the worse for that but it means we have to have pt 2 to discuss Eric’s “Ride Slow, Take Photos” trip and film, his passion for making lenses and other projects.   This show is a bit sweary as Simon could not find his bleeper...   For this show……. Well I’ll list as many links as I can remember.   Things we chatted about on the show:   OK so we didn’t get on to this but here is a link to the article in AF magazine (get it if you don’t already) discussing Rides Slow and Take Photos. https://www.analogforevermagazine.com/features-interviews/film-review-ride-slow-take-pictures?fbclid=IwAR2EPCPIhFtwFzulEit7Jy-D2Qd7Ws3tnGSLIb3trteOZcprh_f1sTJqjNU   Eric hinted at his passion for cycling which forms the means of transport on his “Ride Slow, Take Photos” epic journey.

#19 An Odyssey with John Boyce (Mr De Vere)   Just Simon and Andrew “live in the studio” this week with a recorded interview that Andrew did with John Boyce owner of Odyssey De Vere (Large format enlargers if you are unfamiliar). Despite the lack of “live” guest we still manage to ramble on for a fair while so hang in there till you get to the inaugural LFPP Outside Broadcast (OK it will get better). Thanks to Neil Piper for the loan of his digital recorder, it’s probably something we ought to get for future use as the chat was a lot of fun.   Things we chatted about on the show   Andrew talked about his mini exhibition of Fenland prints and how he hopes to use liquid emulsion on watercolour paper for this – here are some useful links and a note of the book Andrew spoke about   https://www.theimagingwarehouse.com/Products/Liquid-Photo-Emulsion/ARBM33   https://www.amazon.co.uk/Silver-Gelatin-Liquid-Photographic-Emulsions/dp/1902538153   We chatted about Bromoil process and Simon reference a series of YouTube videos https://www.youtube.com/user/Bromoil/featured   Simon and his pals at the Six Towns Darkroom Club in Stoke on Trent were recently gifted some paper and it included some lovely Oriental Seagull FB paper which is no longer available. This led on to a discussion about Lith Printing and Andrew ran through the basic process and mentioned a few helpful sites   The Master who is Tim Rudman http://www.timrudman.com/   Get on Tim’s mailing list for news about current “lithable” papers http://www.timrudman.com/mailing_list   The go-to site for lith materials and info (and Bromoil by the way) is Wolfgang Moersch https://www.moersch-photochemie.de/content/shop/negativ/36/lang:en   To see beautiful examples of Wolfgang’s work check out his Flikr page https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfgang_moersch/   We had some emails Joachim Gross sent links to the company in Germany where he bought his lovely wooden tripod https://www.berlebach.de/?bereich=details&id=266&sprache=english   and   https://www.berlebach.de/?sprache=english   Simon mentioned he was given a Paterson Orbital print processor and Andrew mentioned the daylight tray being developed by Stearman Press https://shop.stearmanpress.com/blogs/news/the-sp-8x10-status   Eventually…….. we lead in to just under an hour of discussion with John Boyce of Odyssey Devere – Now Simon refused to edit this to cover up for Andrew’s ineptness but hang in there as John is a lovely guy and we had a wonderful chat   John’s Link http://odyssey-sales.co.uk/           LFPP links -   https://largeformatphotographypodcast.podbean.com/   ko-fi.com/largeformatphotographypodcast   You can join in the fun at our Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/2296599290564807/   Get Twitter updates for the show from Andrew – https://twitter.com/warboyssnapper   Or from Simon – https://twitter.com/simonfor   Email feedback, ideas and questions for the podcast largeformatphotographypodcast@gmail.com Podcast Hosts Social Media presence   Simon Forster www.classiclensespodcast.com   www.simonforsterphotographic.co.uk   https://stores.ebay.co.uk/itsfozzyphotography   https://www.flickr.com/photos/125323761@N07/   https://www.facebook.com/SimonForsterPhotographic/   https://www.instagram.com/simonforsterphotographic/   https://twitter.com/SimonFor     Andrew Bartram https://anchor.fm/thelenslesspodcast   https://andrewbartram.wordpress.com   https://www.instagram.com/warboyssnapper   https://www.imstagram.com/warboyssnapper_pinholes   https://www.flickr.com/photos/warboyssnapper/   https://twitter.com/warboyssnapper

Download In this unique episode, Joe brings Tom Hatsis and Dr. Jerry Brown together for a psychedelic debate. They go back in forth in conversation on whether there was psychedelic use in medieval or ancient Christianity and if so, was there a secret tradition of including art of mushrooms or psychedelic substances in cathedrals and castles. 3 Key Points: Jerry Brown makes the claim that there is evidence of visionary plants in Christianity and the life of Jesus found in medieval art and biblical scripture. Tom Hatsis makes the claim that Christianity is not hiding a giant secret inside the biblical texts about the true hallucinogen at the root of the religion being an Amanita Muscaria. Jerry and Tom debate back and forth, pulling from art and textual evidence (and lack thereof) to support or deny the claim that Psychedelic Mushrooms are the root of Christian religion. Anthropologist, Author and Activist Served as the Prof of Anthropology at FIU in Miami He designed and taught a course on hallucinogens and culture He is the Co-Author of Sacred Plants and the Gnostic Church: Speculations on Entheogen use in Early Christian Ritual The Psychedelic Gospels: The Secret History of Hallucinogens in Christianity Tom Hatsis Author, Public Speaker, Roller Derby Player and Potion Maker He is the Author of three books in Psychedelia; The Witches Ointment: the Secret History of Psychedelic Magic Psychedelic Mystery Traditions; Spirit Plants, Magical Practices and Psychedelic States Microdosing Magic: A Psychedelic Spellbook Partnered with event organizer and short film maker, Eden Woodruff, who runs Psanctum Psychedelia in Portland in the process of winning the Guinness Book of World Record in Magic Intro The debate is around the early Christian use of psychedelics and mushrooms in Christian art The conversation is on the validity on whether or not psychedelics were used in early Christianity Dr. Jerry Brown on Psychedelics in Christianity The Miracle of Marsh Chapel - a double-blind experiment conducted by Walter Pahnky in 1962 where 20 students were divided into two groups, half received niacin and the other half received psilocybin 9 out of 10 who took psilocybin had a profound psychedelic experience Brown explains that this is an important part in the entire history of psychedelics After discovering the Amanita Muscaria mushroom (confirmed by Paul Stamets) in a 15th Century Church in Scotland, he realized that there were many entheogenic images in Christian art He says that most church historians do not have training in mycology to recognize entheogens and mushrooms He brings up an image of Adam and Eve standing next to a large Amanita Muscaria mushroom He went to a Parish Church and saw an image of Jesus entering Jerusalem on a Donkey, and one of the youths welcoming Jesus is holding a long mushroom cap He went to churches in England, Germany and France In the drawing of Genesis, he saw God creating plants (psilocybin mushrooms) "When you go back beyond the 3rd century, there are no visual images or Christian art due to poverty and persecution" - Jerry Jerry reads a passage, “Jesus said to his disciples, “compare me to someone and tell me who I am like” Thomas said to him, “Master, my mouth is wholly incapable of saying whom you are like.” Jesus said “I am not your master, because you have drunk you have become intoxicated from the bubbling wellspring that I have personally measured out. He who will drink from my mouth will become like me, I shall become like he, and the things that are hidden, should be revealed to him.” He interprets the passage as a reference to drinking a psychoactive mushroom substance Jerry goes on to explain that Jesus realized his feeling of eternal life through the use of psychoactive entheogens He says that this is not a means of dismissing Christianity, but instead to reintroduce Christianity with its original roots Tom Hatsis on Psychedelics in Christianity Tom says that Jerry makes a lot of assertions, but does not present any evidence. He talks about art, but not anything in scripture Tom is curious why the only artwork that Jerry brings his assertions about mushrooms are from a time where we can’t ask them about it Tom brings up Julie and Jerry’s book and that the first chapter has nothing to do with Christian History at all Tom uses an example of stone mushrooms. Someone doing a cross cultural analysis, might agree that they are mushrooms based on the other findings of cannabis and opioids But, as a historian, Tom looks for evidence and in this case, there are eye witness accounts of its use He brings up the example, the infamous plaincourault fresco of Adam and Eve at the tree of good and evil with the forbidden fruit Using this one example, he wants to prove how critical historical methodology is used to prove unsubstantiated claims on Christian art as wrong Tom urges listeners to view the unaltered versions of the plaincourault fresco at Georgio Samorini’s Flikr page  The paradise tree is a mix of the tree of knowledge of good and evil and a symbol of Christ's victory over Adam’s transgression. In the play, it was tradition to place small Eucharist wafers on the tree branches so that’s what the white dots are on the tree branches The tree's shape is not a mushroom cap, it is a parasol of victory Jerry’s Rebuttle Jerry says that the absence of evidence, is not equal, or proof of evidence of absence (just because it’s not written in text, doesn't mean that its not there in the art) Jerry’s issue with the fresco is that “The Fall” is a New Testament creation, not all the way back in Genesis He says that on their website, they do not ‘alter’ the image, they ‘enhance’ it He says that Tom claims the fruit doesn't matter, but the fruit does matter (it could be a psychedelic mushroom) He touches on the skeletal appearance of Eve and the meaning of renewal of life Jerry thinks this image is the beginning of the religious experience and symbolism that the soul is immortal and will continue to exist after death He says the serpent is not a depiction of evil entering Eden, but instead a source of knowledge and a spiritual guide to the feminine to help bring man into higher awareness Tom’s Rebuttle Tom says he didn't hear any evidence from Jerry, he heard arguments to authority He says that Jerry uses anthropology to uncover history, and opinions of art historians, but medieval historians agree that the mushroom is not present in Christian art He also says he did agree with Jerry about the mushroom in art, but that was last year and he has proven himself wrong and that the mushroom caps are parasols of victory Jerry says that Amanita Muscaria was in the Soma, but Tom says cannabis was, and mushrooms were not Chris Bennett's book on Soma There is zero evidence for mushroom art during medieval times In Jerry’s book, he writes about the Basilica di Aquilea, saying that they are Amanita Muscaria, but Tom says they are not that type of mushroom           Tom also says that in the play depicted in the plaincourault, that the script literally says the wafers are hung on the tree, and that the little white dots are not the dots from an Amanita Muscaria Jerry’s Closing Remarks He says that this isn't just cultural analysis, this is about fieldwork and looking at how native people view this artwork The problem he has with Tom and Church historians is that it is not taking evidence from Ethnobotanists Jerry says he believes that there is a long tradition of entheogenic mushrooms in Christian art and would like this debate to continue Tom’s Closing Remarks Tom says he still isn't hearing evidence, he is only hearing assertions and argument to authority and eminent scholars Tom says that Genesis doesn't matter in the plaincourault, because we know that it's about the play He has multiple articles debunking these images on his website Carl Sagan’s Bologna Detection Kit - which shows how to spot fake conspiracies Tom says the holy mushroom hypothesis fails against all the claims Jerry has made Links Tom's Website Jerry's Website Check out our online course, "Introduction to Psychedelics" About Jerry Jerry B. Brown, Ph.D., is an anthropologist, author and activist. From 1972-2014, he served as Founding Professor of Anthropology at Florida International University in Miami, where he designed and taught a course on “Hallucinogens and Culture.” The course examines the use of psychoactive plants by tribal and classical cultures, including Ancient India and Greece, and by and discusses the discoveries of the modern mind-explorers, the “psychonauts of the twentieth century.” About Tom Thomas Hatsis is an author, lecturer, and historian of witchcraft, magic, Western religions, contemporary psychedelia, entheogens, and medieval pharmacopeia. Episode 14: Branding and Re-Branding As freelancers, it has become more and more important to have a presence online. Gone are the days of simply bringing a portfolio of your work and a resume to a potential client meeting. Today, many freelancers employ social media and a website to market themselves to editors and companies. We will talk about social media in another episode, but today we are going to talk about branding and re-branding yourself as a freelancer. Abigail's SmugMug Page **The episode is timely for Abigail and Kate, as Kate just redid her website to incorporate her married name. Abigail was, at the time of recording, in the process of redoing her logo. However, her logo design guru Faith was last week's guest blog, and you can see her new logo here   Branding and rebranding can be a foreign concept to freelancers. Companies have brands, and freelancers are their own company! Kate emphasizes the need to put forth a message and visual that allows people to know who you are as a freelance creative and what you can offer.   What is a brand? More than a logo! ·      Overall package ·      Web presence o   Voice used on the web (Conversational? Professional?) ·      Business card font o   Logo color ·      Shows value & expertise ·      How you dress for meetings … it is all a brand and the brand is YOU. It sets the tone for the professional relationship.   Kate and Abigail outline the process for their websites throughout the episode: 1. Kate – ·      Wanted new site to portray her focus: writing and photography. o   For Western lifestyle, she chose a bucking horse stallion. This is her logo background and business card background. o   Font is clean and simple. ·      Pushed to redesign/rebrand because of “new” name and byline – katebradleybyars.com. ·      Bootstrap/ DIY site – SquareSpace template with Kate's tiny web design additions. ·      Focused on finding a template that displayed large images and had content pages for contact, etc. ·      Links to contact were important to add on multiple pages. ·      Social media links are a window – show your best side and best work on social media! Abigail reminds listeners that a dated website, one with old content, broken links or is not edited for grammar and style, can drive people away… the opposite of the a good first impression. They touch on web hosting sites as well as sites to host photography. 2. Abigail – ·      Hosts her photography on SmugMug. o   Allows clients to access and order from site. o   Small fee for site. o   Other file sharing or storing sites were touched on, like Flikr and Google Drive. o   Site selection should be made to make a freelancer's life easier to publish work and reach clients. ·      Wanted to showcase her style, how she can be hired and show examples of her work on her website, abigailboatwright.com. o   No longer promotes working on social media campaigns or development   A benefit of freelancing is adding and removing avenues of work based on trends or amount of other work. This is why regular updating helps! ·      Her previous site was hosted on blogger.com and was mainly personal info. She DIY overhauled it to a blog site for her freelance business. o   She linked to portfolio work. o   Allowed her to establish first true online presence. o   Struggle to shape it how she wanted but did present her work to viewers. ·      New site focus was tricky to find: showcase work for photography clients AND horse industry editors. She drilled down on her perfect client. Kate also had a blogger style site at first that was not updated regularly and was photo heavy. *do not follow her previous work trend! Update often!* Ways to develop a website: “Bootstrap”  The DIY style web design that is the budget-friendly option. It also offers hands-on ability to update or edit the site without going through a third party. Some struggles to bootstrapping can be updating templates, getting the look you want “Pro” Abigail hired a company to design her website. They set up the Squarespace template, but she still has control over the content. This company designed her logo and branded materials. To give the company direction, she asked herself, what is the image she wants to portray? Abigail wanted to show emotion and connection. Her homepage image has a girl kissing a horse, and in her portfolio she concentrated on images that emphasize emotional connection. The company assisted with SEO, like “Fort Worth photographer” hits on Google. The pros were that it took less time than if she did it solo. Cons include the expense and, depending on the site type, you can give up control to the company. Her company walked her through a tutorial on how to update the site. If a problem is beyond her, she can always call for assistance. “Hybrid” The Freelance Remuda site (freelanceremuda.com) was built in stages of pro and bootstrap: 1. Logo designed by Faith 2. WordPress domain purchased and attempted to create -       Takeaway includes knowing if you need a .com or .org for your needs -       Before purchasing be sure you know what plug ins and apps work for each host site 3. SquareSpace -       This site hosts the current Remuda site. Kate built most of the pages in a template. -       Abigail navigated add the “must have” elements of contact and the newsletter subscriber. -       Pro: user friendly -       Con: analytics for podcast Promotion: Freelancers tend to shy away from promotion. But your social media and website are the perfect place to promote your work. Abigail discusses how her Instagram shifted from family to business focus. She realized it had a number of followers on her account but was posting more family images. To promote her professional work, she started a new family Insta. Abigail uses Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.   Kate has a balance of work and lifestyle on her Insta, because her dog (#HukFinDog) and horse (#TheBerniePony) do make cameo appearances. She sees Insta as a means of showing personality and style that can bring in clients. Kate has Facebook and Instagram, but doesn't tweet. Words of advice: 1. CONTACT INFORMATION -       An email form is good, but having a direct mail address (or phone number) is preferred by visitors. Always check to ensure the form is working so you don't miss work. -       Some clients prefer to speak to you, so a phone number is a second contact form 2. TIME TO CHANGE -       Abigail's biggest limitation to redesign is the time it takes to build a new site, logo, etc. -       Promoting the name and new site are a must to gain looks! -       Also, budget. Sometimes a new design is needed but the funds to invest aren't there. Instead, update the content of what you have. 3. KEEP IT FRESH -       Updating what you have is the key to keeping people interested in your site, your work. -       Post new work, or work that shows your current skill sets. -       Add a monthly review of your online presence and update it as needed. -       Even if you're not ready to launch, obtain social media names that fit your brand. -       Promote yourself, your work, your accomplishments! -       Remember, create your brand, maintain your brand and promote your brand. Abigail's last advice was to ensure you have a great bio that represents you. There are bio creators out there, like Abigail, and having that window into who you are as a professional will help. To wrap it up, Kate and Abigail remind you to pick something comfortable and start there, whether it is Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or an easy-to-update website. Now, grow your brand!

Today on the show I sit down with my ultra running friend Josh Spector to talk all things Badwater. Widely accepted as the “World's Toughest Foot Race”, Badwater is a 135 mile running race across Death Valley — the hottest place on Earth, where temperatures average 120+ in July and can reach as high as 130 F with pavements temps typically in the 170-180 degree F range.Starting at Badwater Basin — the lowest point in North America at 282 feet below sea level, approxmately 100 invitation-only runners from across the globe begin a jaunt that will take them across bleak and scorching desert terrain as well as three formidable mountain passes, including the culminating 13-mile ascent up the portals of Mt. Whitney — the highest peak in the lower 48 — to finish at 8,300 feet.Yeah – it's that insane.I had the honor & privilege of being a member of Dean Karnazes' crew this year, along with Jason Koop, Brandon Friese and Nathan Peerbolt. Together we paced, fed, hydrated and generally did all we could to help Dean complete this unbelievable race for the 10th time. It was an extraordinary experience — one I won't soon forget.Simultaneously, Josh — himself an accomplished ultra runner with three 100-milers under his belt — returned to Badwater for his third crewing experience, this time for runner Ray Sanchez. In this episode we swap stories about the experience, giving the listener a rare peek at exactly what it's like to have a front row seat at what I have to say is one of the most incredible displays of the indomitable nature of the human spirit I have ever seen — and will likely ever see.Enjoy the show.To view a Flikr photo gallery of the journey click HERE– most images by Nathan Peerbolt with a few by Brandon Friese. This episode of the Video StudentGuy is about the day I spent at Podcamp Boston last Sunday October 28. This is my first time attending a podcamp and I was really looking forward to it. Over all, it was a good experience. I'm sorry I couldn't have attended the previous day, I was in class There were a number of sessions specifically on video casting that I know would have been interesting. To top it off I was really tired, it was a busy busy week on all fronts. I never would have made it through the weekend if I attended both days. Next year I'll be done with school and I'll have a lot more time for user events like this.By the way, just after I posted this I found this link to a video recorded during lunch, Sunday I guess, from the sound of it. Fool that I am I went to the cafeteria and ate lunch! Anyway, its an ad hoc discussion about the value of the conference as the nature of new media and new media producers matures. I feel very strongly that those of us who are about to launch our careers in video should be up to our armpits in new media. This is our wave. Thanks to Bob Goyetche for recording and posting this video. On a side note there is a podcasting meetup that takes place monthly in the Boston area. CC Chapman is the contact person for this. It was on hiatus during the summer, but I spoke to him at end of the day Sunday and he said there will be something coming up soon. Like all meetups, its open to anyone, not just people producing podcasts. I hear about them mostly from Mark and Bob on the Canadian Podcast Buffet show, but I don't doubt they're friendly, congenial get-togethers no matter where they occur. One note about the show, I start out with a rant about the venue, the Boston Convention Center. I've got some pictures I need to put up on Flikr. Obviously it had a significant impact on me, but it doesn't in any significant way detract from the quality of the event, I just tend to notice UI issues and the convention center definitely has a UI problem. If you're not interested in listening to me go on and on about it, just move ahead to 4:18, thats when my review of the sessions I attended begins.I understand attendance was smaller Sunday than Saturday, and it felt somewhat subdued, so I didn't get a chance to meet a lot of people, but everyone I spoke with was happy to talk and share their ideas and knowledge.Guido Stein - it's a Purl, man - knitting podcastJane Quigley - Digital Grit - exchanged cards, though I don have a card yetBen Ortega - Phive Tacos - another cardFaye Anderson - Anderson@Large - Citizen Jouralist - local politics, we had a nice conversation about the role of podcasting in political actionC.C.
