In today's episode of The Art of Passive Income, Mark and Scott talk with Matt Miller, SSVBusiness.com—a vending machine franchise, with a twist. Matt spent the first nine years of his career as an Air Force pilot before entering the corporate world to work at both Abbott Laboratories and Valassis. Despite being a top performer for both companies, his long-term desire was to start a business and be his own boss. Then, a conversation Matt had with a friend about gumball machine vending inspired him to invest in his own machines. Starting with candy and gumball machines, Matt soon became frustrated with the market downturn of '07 and '08 because there weren't as many people frequenting his regular vending locations… then a knock came at his door. Local kids were selling merchandise for their school fundraiser and Matt thought there had to be a better way for these kids to raise money than knocking on the doors of strangers. That's when School Spirit Vending was born — customized school stickers machines, placed in schools and part of the proceeds go back to the school's fundraising campaigns. Matt has taken vending beyond the gumball machine and has brought School Spirit Vending to the cutting edge of both the vending and school fundraising industries by combining these two ventures into one, then took it to the next level by franchising it. With franchises across the country, they are raising millions for the schools they serve. “I had 75 schools myself before I walked away from my full-time advertising career. I was working about five days a month to make an income that was in excess by several times what my full-time career income was.” Join us as Matt walks us through his business model, both on the vending and franchise sides. He delves deep into: Profit margins Placement Maintenance Start-up costs And, are the challenges in this business? Matt explains that the hardest part is the learning curve in the first few months. Everybody that joins the team with no vending machine background has to learn the vending part along with how to work in the school's environment. Plus, find out everything you need to know to get started in his franchise. Is Matt's model a good source of passive income? Matt shows us some pretty impressive margins that suggest that it might be. Matt has a special offer for our listeners. Welcome to this episode of the Real Fast Results podcast! This episode is meant to be a very special treat for you. It’s something a bit different, but worth considering. Today’s special guest is Matt Miller, who is a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. He was an air force pilot for nine years. Post military, Matt worked in both medical and advertising fields, as a top performer. His long-term desire was to start a business, probably a lot like you, and to build a lifestyle based on freedom and choice. During a conversation with a good friend, that actually led him into a 10-year business quest that has brought Matt’s franchising company to the cutting edge of both vending and school fundraising industries. Starting with just a teeny-tiny seed of $100, he has built a “school spirit” vending machine company into a multi-million dollar vending business. Promise: How to Build a Profitable Secondary Income Stream by Using Vending Machines Thanks, first off, for having me on. I really appreciate being here. The big promise is: [bctt tweet="I want to show you how you can build a very profitable secondary income stream using vending machines as the vehicle" via="no"] Pat Flynn is a good friend of mine, and this started with a blog a few years ago which talked about creating information products online. My challenge was, I have a very, very simple mindset, and the whole internet thing still just blows my mind, when I try to think about it. Download the Complete PDF Show Notes Free for this Episode I needed to do something that would allow me to make money immediately, not on down the road. So, I had a good buddy at church who mentioned gum ball machines, and I got to thinking about it, and I was like, “You know what? It’s going to take a lot of gum balls for me to get where I want to go financially,” but those gum balls have over a 1,000% markup, so the margins are huge, and the machines do all the selling while you’re not there. So, I started, literally, with a $36 used gum ball machine from a guy that I found on Ebay, across Houston, where we lived at the time. That’s where and how I started this business. How could your life change if you had a secondary passive income coming in every month? What would it mean to you if you could make enough money through your business efforts to make a real difference in the world? Today’s guest, Matt Miller, has built his business on the idea that everyone needs a side income stream that enables them to move their life to the next level. He’s the owner and leader behind School Spirit Vending, a vending company that has created the dream life Matt has always wanted and is also bringing about powerful change in the educational system in the US...by empowering schools to effectively raise funds for much needed resources, materials, and programs. Matt’s a down to earth guy who’s got a great opportunity to share with you, so be sure you listen to this episode of Growth to Freedom. Leaving the Air Force and blazing a new trail, Matt Miller wasn’t sure what he would do. But he knew that he didn’t want to be in another situation where someone was always telling him what to do. Deep inside was a desire for freedom, a desire to chart his own course and live a life of freedom and independence. After selling products online through eBay and Amazon for years, Matt believed that there had to be a better way. When a friend at church mentioned vending machines, Matt was all ears. He figured the machines did most of the selling once they were in place, and that was all it took to peak his interest. The rest is history. Matt has now built his own company, School Spirit Vending, centered around the idea of passive income providing security, flexibility, and wealth, coupled with a belief that he has been placed on the planet to make a difference. And more than all of that, Matt is excited that his business model is transferable, which means that he’s able to help other families find the lifestyle of freedom and impact that he’s found through vending opportunities. On this episode of Growth to Freedom Matt shares how a vending business could be the exact source of income many families are looking for, and provides a way for you to get a free copy of his book, “Live Your Dreams” that outlines the opportunity and impact a vending business can provide. Retirement planning is as much about additional sources of income as it is about investments. Roger’s guest today, Matt Miller, has built a company that offers savvy retirement planners a legitimate way to add an additional stream of income to their current situation - either on the side or with hopes of it moving toward a full time business. It’s entrepreneurial to the core; becoming a business owner, making your own rules, living the life you want now, instead of waiting for retirement. But it builds toward retirement as well. Matt’s story is inspiring… and you’ll hear it all on this episode of Retirement Answer Man. From the military, to corporate, to entrepreneur - Matt’s story Matt Miller was a pilot in the U.S. Military, and when he decided to step out of that life the transition was more difficult than he thought it would be. Though the government had spent plenty of time and money giving him outstanding skills, potential employers seemed hesitant to give him a chance because they weren’t sure he’d stick with them. They thought he was likely to return to the military instead. As Matt dealt with the corporate politics and the difficulties of achieving the freedom and levels of success he wanted, he realized that his future retirement AND the life he wanted now were things he’d have to go for on his own. Get more details on this episode. Retirement planning is about more than just amassing a pile of cash - it’s about making a meaningful life That’s a mindset that many people planning for their eventual retirement don’t cultivate enough. Your life after retirement can be, and should be rich with activity that makes a difference in the world. Matt Miller (today’s guest on the Retirement Answer Man) says he could never see himself sitting on a beach doing nothing. He doesn’t want to be that person. He’s got to be busy investing himself in causes that are important to him, no matter his age or degree of physical stamina, and he’s built a business that makes it possible for him to do that, and empower others to have the same opportunity. If you’re tired of the rat race and want something different for your future, you should check out Matt’s great opportunity. Find out more by listening to this episode. A listener question: Can I contribute to my ROTH IRA even though I’m not eligible to do so? ROTH IRAs do have some limitations on when and how contributions can be made, especially if you’re single and make over a certain amount of income in the year you want to make a contribution. In this episode of Retirement Answer Man Roger fields a question from a listener who is in that exact situation and in doing so sheds light on the ways contributions can be made in that situation, and whether they will be tax free contributions or not. If you’ve got questions about your ROTH IRA, you should listen to this helpful Q&A with the Retirement Answer Man. Do you have a question for Roger Whitney, the Retirement Answer Man? Roger would love to hear from you and answer your question on an upcoming episode of RAM. You can easily submit your question in one of two ways: 1) Visit the website at www.RogerWhitney.com/retirementanswers .
