Ready to dive into the wild world of “Fail Forward Friday”? This week, I'm spilling the beans on my epic journey through job rejection land—where I got turned down not once, not twice, but a whopping four times for the same job! You'd think after acing all the tests, I'd be the golden child, but nope! Turns out, sometimes the universe has a funny way of preparing us for the big moments, and I finally cracked the code on the fifth try. Join me as I dish out some juicy lessons on resilience, turning rejection into motivation, and how clarity can catapult you towards your goals faster than you can say “job interview”! So grab your cuppa, and let's get this party started! The Details:What happens when you know exactly what you're meant to do, but the world seems determined to tell you otherwise? In this powerful Fail Forward Friday episode, Heather shares her raw journey through four job rejections in 1980's Britain—a time when unemployment was so high that career training included lessons on applying for social security. With burning determination to become a computer programmer despite lacking university qualifications, she applied for the same IT role four times, getting rejected each time despite having the highest test scores. This isn't just a story about persistence—it's about the difference between knowing your path and hoping for it, and how sometimes what looks like failure is just the universe preparing you for perfect timing. What's Inside:Heather's emotional journey from an 18-year-old temp clerk to trainee programmer in 1980's northeast EnglandThe brutal reality of economic hardship and limited opportunities that shaped her generationA detailed breakdown of each rejection: from initial disappointment to colleagues' sarcasm to genuine angerThe shocking revelation that she'd scored highest on every test but was somehow "overlooked" for four attemptsHow she used each setback as information: getting coding certificates, sharpening logic skills, building resilienceThree transformational lessons about clarity, using rejection as education, and trusting perfect timingThe moment everything changed when a new HR team asked the right questionThe Uncomfortable Truth:Sometimes the system is broken, but your vision isn't. When you absolutely know what you're meant to do, rejection becomes information rather than identity—data about what needs to change, not proof that you're not enough.Key Takeaways:Absolute clarity about your path creates unstoppable momentum—when you know (not hope) you're meant for something, setbacks become stepping stonesUse rejection as information, not identity—each "no" can educate you about what to improve or what's wrong with the systemPerfect timing includes the preparation period—those delays aren't punishment, they're the universe building exactly the qualities you'll need for successIf you're excelling but not getting opportunities, that's information about their system, not your potentialChapters:00:08 - Facing Rejection: A Personal Story02:02 - Overcoming Rejection on the Path to IT03:52 - The Turning Point: Discovering My True Potential04:46 - Lessons from Rejection06:25 - Taking Action Towards Your CallingThis Week's Persistence Practice:Identify something you absolutely know you're meant to do—that calling that won't leave you alone despite obstacles. Send us a textIn this episode of Thoughts of a Dreamer: Out My Mind, Terri Nikki dives into one of the biggest dream-killers of all time: failure. We've all been there—hesitating to post, launch, or pitch because of the shame and embarrassment tied to getting it wrong. But what if failure isn't a dead end? What if every misstep is actually data, timing, refinement, or wisdom in disguise? From childhood lessons that taught us to avoid the red “F,” to watching others push through “cringe” and leap ahead, Terri reframes failure as a necessary part of the dreamer's journey. Using humor, storytelling, and a Scooby Doo-style analogy, she challenges us to unmask failure and see what's really underneath. This is your Failure Reframe Bootcamp—a reminder that success isn't about perfect execution. It's about becoming a successful failure, learning as you go, and refusing to let your dream die in your mind.
Ever felt terrible about not showing up for something, only to discover it was the best thing that could have happened? In this thought-provoking Fail Forward Friday episode, Heather V Masters challenges our obsession with consistency and explores the radical idea that sometimes "failing" to show up is actually the universe's way of protecting and guiding us. Through two raw personal stories—a technical nightmare that led to a client breakthrough and a countryside delay that saved her from a serious accident—Heather reveals how divine timing often trumps our best-laid plans. What's Inside:Heather's vulnerable story of technical failures that felt like professional incompetence but created space for deeper client transformationThe tale of the slowest tractor in Northumberland and how it became unexpected protection from a serious road accidentWhy consistency is good, but intuition and trust in timing can be even betterThree powerful lessons about surrendering control and trusting the bigger pictureA week-long "trust experiment" to help you reframe delays and setbacksKey Takeaways:Sometimes the universe has far better timing than our carefully planned schedulesConsistency is brilliant, but learning to trust when things aren't flowing is equally importantPerfect timing isn't your timing—it's the right timing for what you truly need"Failures" to show up can actually be course corrections protecting you from harm or preparing you for something betterThe Bigger Picture:This episode arrives at a time when many people are burnt out from trying to be perfectly consistent and always "on." Heather's message offers a refreshing alternative: what if we could trust the process, even when it doesn't match our plans? This Week's Trust Experiment:When something goes "wrong" this week—delays, tech failures, cancelled plans—pause before the self-blame kicks in. Ask yourself: "What if this timing is actually perfect? What might this be protecting me from or preparing me for?" Notice what shifts when you trust rather than fight the process.Chapters:00:10 - Embracing Failure as a Step to Growth00:49 - Transformative Lessons in Timing and Failure03:17 - Lessons on Timing and Intuition04:14 - The Power of Perfect Timing05:55 - Closing Thoughts and Future EpisodesConnect & Share:Share your own stories of "failures" that turned out to be blessings with us @ChoosingHappyPodcast or heather@heathervmasters.comVisit www.choosinghappypodcast.com for more episodes about trusting life's unexpected turnsSubscribe for weekly doses of wisdom about choosing happiness through life's plot twistsHow You Can Support This Independent Podcast:Please like, share with someone who may need to hear this today, and/or leave a review and support the podcast. Episode SummaryIn this raw and revealing Fail Forward Friday episode, Heather shares two contrasting stories from her own business journey: why she persisted with her Sunday newsletter after two years of declining engagement, and why she completely pivoted away from YouTube after a controversial interview led to algorithmic exile. Through these parallel experiences, she explores the crucial difference between productive persistence and digital self-harm.The StoriesThe Newsletter Journey: After 88 editions over two years, spending 4+ hours every Sunday writing, Heather watched her email bounce rates rise and open rates plummet. On the verge of quitting, she asked the universe for a sign - and got a response after edition 86 that led to new business. She persisted. The YouTube Pivot: Following a controversial interview, Heather's YouTube channel went from hundreds of views to literally zero - not just new videos, but even older content was algorithmically suppressed. Recognising the need to niche down in today's landscape, she pivoted completely to LinkedIn, launching an AI-focused newsletter for transformational practitioners.Key Topics CoveredRecognising the difference between productive persistence and stubborn repetitionReading micro-signals versus macro-resultsHow algorithms can completely reshape your digital strategyThe importance of niching down in today's content landscapeWhen to trust your energy levels as crucial business dataPivoting your method while maintaining your missionChapters:00:32 - The Balance of Persistence and Letting Go02:21 - A Tale of Two Journeys03:39 - The Pivot Decision: Learning from YouTube's Founders05:19 - Navigating Persistence and Pivoting06:45 - The Signals of ChangeThree Core LessonsLook for micro-signals, not just macro-results - Small signs of engagement matter more than vanity metricsTrust your energy - Generative challenge feels different from soul-crushing strugglePivot your method, not your mission - Stay true to your purpose while being flexible about your platformThis Week's Reality CheckStrip away all the "shoulds" and "I've already invested so much time" and ask: What does your gut tell you about your current path? Let's be honest, training can spark short-term results, but if you want long-term recruiting success, you need a team that lives in a growth mindset. In this episode of Recruiting Conversations, I break down how to create a learning culture that fuels consistency, creativity, and long-term momentum. This isn't about more courses or another playbook. It's about shaping a culture where people chase improvement, not because you make them, but because it's who they are. Episode Breakdown [00:00] Introduction – Why most teams flatline after early wins—and how to fix it with a growth culture. [01:00] Step 1: Model It from the Top – If you're not growing, your team won't either. Share what you're learning and experimenting with. [02:00] Step 2: Build It Into the Rhythm – Weekly skill clinics, role plays, book clubs, and "teach-back" moments create learning momentum. [03:00] Step 3: Celebrate Growth Behaviors – Don't just recognize hires; reward script tweaks, learning reps, and initiative. [04:00] Step 4: Create Psychological Safety – Give your team permission to fail forward. Growth can't happen if fear dominates the room. [05:00] Step 5: Align Systems to Support Growth – Track and coach development behaviors, not just outputs. Reinforce the right things. [06:00] Final Challenge – Audit your culture. Ask: Are we learning? Sharing? Modeling? If not, start with one small rhythm and build from there. Key Takeaways You Set the Growth Ceiling – If you're not learning, neither is your team. Model curiosity, not just execution. Make Learning Normal – Growth won't scale if it's optional. Systematize it with intentional rhythms. Reward Process, Not Just Production – Celebrate the learner, not just the closer. Fail Forward, Together – Safe teams grow faster. Normalize iteration and experimentation. As more mothers enter the world of entrepreneurship, studies show that balancing passion and family can be overwhelming - even paralyzing. The pressure to turn a passion into a profitable business while keeping up with the demands of parenting can leave many feeling unsure of where to start or whether they have what it takes. With social media filled with perfect images of other moms seemingly "doing it all," it's easy to feel like you're falling short if your journey isn't picture-perfect. But here's the truth: Success doesn't require perfection, and you don't need to have it all figured out before you begin. What if instead of waiting for the "right time" or having the perfect setup, you took the chance by “failing forward”? Could being messy and imperfect actually be the secret to making your passion profitable? In this episode, I talk to cookbook and Substack author, Caroline Chambers, who built a successful business while balancing motherhood. She shares why action is the key to clarity and how to start small, monetize trust, and grow your passion without waiting for the perfect moment. Things You'll Learn In This Episode Why You Should Be Open to Change If you're feeling stuck, it might be because the path you're on isn't where your true passion lies, and trying something new could open doors you never knew existed. Are you holding yourself back by staying in your current routine? “Failing Forward” is Okay Success comes from learning, not perfection. What could you achieve if you let go of needing everything to be perfect and just started? Turn Trust into a Business Building real trust with your community encourages support and can create opportunities for making money. Have you thought about how you could turn the trust people have in you into something valuable? Guest Bio Caroline Chambers grew up in the kitchen on her mom's hip, learning how to cook in their Winston-Salem, North Carolina, home. Her professional food career began in her early twenties when she worked as a chef and caterer. After a stint in a professional test kitchen, Caro struck out on her own as a freelancer, developing recipes for a host of publications as well as brands such as Boursin Cheese and Kim Crawford Wine, and in 2018, she published her first cookbook, Just Married. In 2020—at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic—Caro began sharing her recipes and connecting with home cooks on Instagram (@carochambers ), and launched her newsletter, What to Cook When You Don't Feel Like Cooking, which flew to the top of the Substack charts; her podcast, So Into That, followed in 2023. Caro's latest cookbook, What To Cook When You Don't Feel Like Cooking, is available for pre-order and will be out on August 13, 2024. Caro lives in Carmel Valley, California, with her husband, George, and their three young sons, Mattis, Calum, and Cashel—one of whom can almost always be found in the kitchen on her hip.
