Social media has become an integral part of all of our lives. We use it to connect with friends and family, to catch up on current events, and, perhaps most importantly, to entertain ourselves. This is why just under 70 percent of Americans, and more than 2.6 billion active users globally, use social networking sites. However, this wasn't always the case. Back in just 2005, social media penetration in the U.S. was just 5 percent, and most of the rest of the internet didn't even know what it was. Today, by producing eye-catching content and using such tools as Instagram Stories and the Facebook Market Place, anyone from the humble start-up to well-known brands can compete against one another on an even playing field. Previously, small companies would struggle online with a low advertising budget. Still, today they are more likely to survive than they would on the high street, as social media platforms have helped them spread the word about their offerings. People tend to be more influenced by what they read on social media than through casual conversations or what they watch on TV. This has created a HUGE opportunity for content creators! One we are going to discuss today. Chances are even if you don't "follow" a social media influencer or even totally understand what they do you're likely to understand the concept. Influencers are those individuals who have essentially established credibility in a specific area or industry. To be successful they need to have access to an audience, preferably a large audience – hence their "influence. "With time and commitment, and consistent effort, it is possible for an average person to become a successful influencer," said Sinead Norenius-Raniere, vice president, influencer marketing & paid social at Valassis. There's a segment of professionals who have risen to the level of a social media influencer as a byproduct of their expertise in a given subject. "They are corporate executives, thought-leaders, scientists, academics, corporate executives, and others," noted Schreiner. "The Internet and platforms like Twitter and LinkedIn, provide these influencers with a social media presence and a stage to communicate their expertise to a wider audience than if they just wrote a book, for instance. For these influencers this social media presence may result in becoming a mini-celebrity and the rewards of receiving increased professional recognition along with additional associated professional benefits."

Matt Miller spent the first 9 years of his career as an Air Force pilot, before entering the corporate world to work at both Abbott Laboratories and Valassis. While a top performer for both companies, his long term desire was to start a business and be his own boss. A good friend one day mentioned the gum ball machines he and his young daughters owned, and that conversation began a 10 year business quest that has brought Matt's franchise company, School Spirit Vending, to the cutting edge of both the vending and school fundraising industries. Today, the School Spirit Vending franchise is helping professionals across the country develop more freedom and security, while supporting local schools at the same time. The way you organize your data science team will greatly affect your business’s outcome. This episode discusses different structures for a data science team, as well as top down versus bottom up approaches, how to get data science solutions into production organically, and how to be part of the business while remaining in contact with other data scientists on the team. Mark Lowe: Having lived through small scale, two people working, to large scale, thousands of people in your organization, the way that you organize the data science team has dramatic effect on its productivity. Ginette Methot: I’m Ginette, and I’m Curtis, and you are listening to Data Crunch, a podcast about how applied data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence are changing the world. Data Crunch is produced by the Data Crunch Corporation, an analytics training and consulting company. Building effective data science processes is tough. Mode, the data science platform, has compiled three tips to make it a bit easier: don’t over plan, there’s no one process that fits everyone, and waste time. That’s right. Waste time. Read more at mode.com/dsp M O D E.com/D S P. Today we’re going to talk about effective ways you can organize your data science team, and we’ll hear lots of great insights from our guest. Let’s get to it. Mark: My name is Mark Lowe. I’m currently the senior principal data scientist here at Valassis. Curtis Seare: Describe just a little bit about what Valassis does. Mark: So we work with pretty much every major manufacturer retailer in the U.S. Our work kind of runs the gamut in terms of solving problems for them in terms of how do I influence customers. And so we manage a lot of print products that go reach every household, every week and of course a lot of digital products. So everything from display advertising, campaign, search campaign, social. Pretty much any distribution mechanism that can influence customers, we try to use those channels. Curtis: And in working on these problems we talked a little bit about earlier what the approaches for data science. Some people try to bin it in a software development kind of a role, an agile role, and how that usually doesn’t work for data science cause it’s more of an experimental type of a thing. Can you comment on its similarities and differences and how you should be approaching data sites? Mark: I think that’s a great question. Honestly, if you, if you asked me 10 years ago if this was an interesting question, I would have found it very boring. But having, having lived through small-scale, two people working, to large scale, thousands of people in your organization, the way that you organize the data science team has dramatic effect on its productivity, and there’s no one size that fits all. Honestly, you kind of have to cater the organization of the data science team to where the company is. For example, the two common models that are deployed and, and we’ve, we’ve lived in both of them is kinda thinking about data science as an internal consulting group. So I have a a pool of data scientists. Stakeholders throughout the company come to me and ask, they say, “I have this problem. I think it needs data science” and then the data science lead or team. Yes, we do need a data scientist working on that. Here’s a person with that specialty. So kind of farming out individuals on the team to solve particular problems. So it’s a fairly centralized organization and that, you know, there’s a lot of benefits to that. One, you’ve got strong sense of community as a team. Oftentimes you’re very tightly organized together. You function as a data science unit. You can try to make sure that you’re putting the right skillset for the right problem. As you know, as you’ve talked to that, there’s, there is no one definition of data science, there’s no one skillset. So oftentimes the data science team has a mixture of skills across the team,

In today's episode of The Art of Passive Income, Mark and Scott talk with Matt Miller, SSVBusiness.com—a vending machine franchise, with a twist. Matt spent the first nine years of his career as an Air Force pilot before entering the corporate world to work at both Abbott Laboratories and Valassis. Despite being a top performer for both companies, his long-term desire was to start a business and be his own boss. Then, a conversation Matt had with a friend about gumball machine vending inspired him to invest in his own machines. Starting with candy and gumball machines, Matt soon became frustrated with the market downturn of '07 and '08 because there weren't as many people frequenting his regular vending locations… then a knock came at his door. Local kids were selling merchandise for their school fundraiser and Matt thought there had to be a better way for these kids to raise money than knocking on the doors of strangers. That's when School Spirit Vending was born — customized school stickers machines, placed in schools and part of the proceeds go back to the school's fundraising campaigns. Matt has taken vending beyond the gumball machine and has brought School Spirit Vending to the cutting edge of both the vending and school fundraising industries by combining these two ventures into one, then took it to the next level by franchising it. With franchises across the country, they are raising millions for the schools they serve. “I had 75 schools myself before I walked away from my full-time advertising career. I was working about five days a month to make an income that was in excess by several times what my full-time career income was.” Join us as Matt walks us through his business model, both on the vending and franchise sides. He delves deep into: Profit margins Placement Maintenance Start-up costs And, are the challenges in this business? Matt explains that the hardest part is the learning curve in the first few months. Everybody that joins the team with no vending machine background has to learn the vending part along with how to work in the school's environment. Plus, find out everything you need to know to get started in his franchise. Is Matt's model a good source of passive income? Matt shows us some pretty impressive margins that suggest that it might be. Matt has a special offer for our listeners. Todays guest joining us on the Join Up Dots free podcast interview, is a man with a fascinating tale joining up many dots to where he is today. Spending the first nine years of his career like Maverick in Top Gun, he felt the need the need for speed, as an Air Force Pilot, before entering the corporate world to work for Abbott Laboratories and then Valassis. And he was on top form working for both companies, and was recognised as a top performer. Which is of course great, but underneath lurking in his passions and dreams, was a desire to go out on his own to start his own business. The old leap of faith was beckoning, but like so many people across the world, he had the desire but not the direction. He wanted to do his own thing, but was unsure what that thing was supposed to be. And as we see time and time again on Join Up Dots, that path can reveal itself at anytime, and this was certainly the case with todays guest. As fate would have it, a random conversation with a friend about the gum ball machines his family owned started it all off. That one conversation sparked an intrigue and planted the seeds for what would eventually become his business School Spirit Vending. But not before disappointment, frustration and the downturn in the economy in 2008 knocked his confidence for six. And then a knock on the door happened at his home, and the path got clearer. So what was it about that knock on the door, and the conversation that happened upon opening it,that really got the juices going? And does he now look back and think, “Man, the clues were floating around me all the time, I just couldn't see them?” Well let's bring onto the show to start joining up dots, as we discuss the words of Steve Jobs in todays Free podcast, with the one and only Matt Miller Show Highlights During the show we discussed such weighty topics with Matt such as: How he feels the speed of the group is determined by the speed of the leader, and he is aware that everyday he has to be on top form to inspire that momentum. How he often advises entrepreneurs that when you start a product be aware that you will end up in a 180 direction change down the line. How he remembers the time, that it first dawned him that he had achieved the tipping point in his life and he had now achieved the time freedom he craves. And lastly…. How he now knows exactly what his key skills are, and actively seeks for people who are excited to do the things that he can't. Which powers his business forward massively.

Over the years, Matt’s diligent effort and entrepreneurial expertise has brought School Spirit Vending to the cutting edge of both the vending and school fundraising industries by combining these two ventures into one. Today, School Spirit Vending’s Hassle-Free fundraising program is helping schools across the country raise money in its own unique way. In addition to the basic in’s and out’s of running SSV, Matt is devoted to sharing his expertise with others. Through many different venues, including podcasts and public speaking, Matt seeks to enable other entrepreneurs to chase their dreams as well. He also serves as the editor for Marlin & Percy, which enables him to live his life-long dream of working in the world of comics. Todays guest joining us on the top rated Join Up Dots free podcast interview, is a man with a fascinating tale joining up many dots to where he is today. And does he now look back and think, "Man, the clues were floating around me all the time, I just couldn't see them?" Well let's bring onto the show to start joining up dots, as we discuss the words of Steve Jobs in todays Free podcast, with the one and only Matt Miller
