#62 – 5 Year Podcast Anniversary Leads to Finally Creating Videos

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 3, 2020 23:54

My Risk Without Regret podcast launched 5 years ago this weekend. I’ve taken too long of a break from it, but it’s time to finally get back. And what better way than to start creating videos on the 5 year anniversary. I’ve been terrified to be on video for so long, but that was just a stupid story I told myself. Zero excuses. Just start and keep going. Let go of perfection, just create now with whatever tools you have. So here’s me rambling for 23 minutes about myself and my podcast and my life and I’m finally ready to get my thoughts and stories back out there. The audio for this podcast was stripped out of the video that's on my YouTube channel (The Ran Plan). Thanks for listening. ======== Website: http://www.RiskWithoutRegret.com YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/theranplan Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/riskwithoutregret Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/riskwithoutregret

If you're a musician, you want more people to listen to your music. And you'd prefer to create music full-time. Which means you'll likely need to make money from it. Today's episode talks about various ways to increase your YouTube revenue. In the end, you should strive to connect with your fans more. And by giving them more of what they want, you'll also get more of what you want. Some of these strategies (which are probably obvious to most bands) can help you make a few extra bucks, and that should allow you to keep creating more music. Leveraging the technology that's available to us these days is cheap or free in some cases. You might as well use it to your advantage and turn your fans into raving fans. In this episode I talk about mundane tasks, people hating their jobs, feeling stuck, how money is an incentive to keep you there, going down the wrong path, making changes, how you have plenty of time every week to figure something else out, and asking questions like what do you really want in life. So about a year ago, I wanted to create my own monthly subscription box for my Low Label clothing brand. Everyone was doing them and I thought I could build something cool too. I had no idea what I was doing so it was a lot of trial and error, until I ultimately shut it down at the end of 2017. Throughout this episode, I explain the details of my monthly box and why it was a failure (even though most failures are great learning experiences). I talk about why it probably didn't work out, and then I go into some ways that I would do a subscription box differently in the future. #57 - The Hard Work Puts You Where The Good Luck Can Find You

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 2, 2018 3:00

Here's a super short episode, only 3 minutes in length. I posted this quote on my personal Instagram a couple months ago (@bigran82). I wrote a long caption explaining my thoughts on it and how it relates to my life. I turned that caption into audio and now it's available through my podcast. Here's the text version of this episode: So much work over the past week, and it continues into another late one tonight. I think we are all lucky at times, but no one is lucky 24/7. Someone called me lucky again the other day, because sometimes my social media gives off the impression like I don't work at all, like I'm just traveling all the time or eating at Chipotle everyday or just sleeping. Like that's all I do. Haha I just work hard behind the scenes, although if you've followed my Snapchat (minitruckscene) for the past few years, you'd see what my daily life is like. I really enjoy my life, but 80% of the time it would look extremely boring from an outsider's perspective. Like here's my computer, here's a book, here's my food, here's a movie I'm watching, here's the orders I'm shipping, here's the music I'm listening to, etc. But that 20% or less of my time overpowers the majority. It blinds people and makes them forget what my daily life is like. Most of my waking hours are spent either: at my desk on my computer, in bed or on the couch updating social media accounts & responding to emails, or in some random place working from my laptop. But that's boring so I don't show it all the time. By not showing it all the time, I might have this image sometimes of extreme success with little to no work. Far from the truth. And I know I can make things look easy at times, but it took many years of work for it to appear that way. So maybe I should start posting more of my daily life (even though I think I'm extremely transparent on all social networks) so people can better understand what it takes to do the things I do. It's not easy by any means, and I don't think it's for most people, but it's 100% available to everyone. I just had a stronger push to go for it, and that opened my eyes. Maybe some day I can give that same push to hundreds or thousands of people. What are your thoughts on all of this? Back to work at 2:04am, at my desk, that I've been at for 4 hours, and before that I was on the couch updating social media til I passed out for a few hours. The ingredients are simple, but cooking the recipe can be challenging at times. Make it anyways. @riskwithoutregret #ranplan I hope you loved this episode, and if you did, be sure to subscribe to the podcast and leave a quick review! On today's episode, I have an amazing interview that I know you'll get some value out of. My guest is an entrepreneur located down in Texas, and although he's running a successful business these days, it wasn't always that way. In fact, for almost 10 years, he was an air force pilot flying all over the world. But after you hear his story, as well as the ups and downs along the way, you'll understand why he transitioned into something completely different: vending machines. He took a simple concept, found an industry that could benefit from his idea, found success with it, created a franchise program, and has been scaling the business ever since. If you've ever thought about starting a business on the side, but you don't know where to start, and you're really looking for a proven business model to get you going, that isn't going to take up all your spare time, this episode is definitely for you. Or maybe you have plans to quit your full-time job and want to switch careers altogether, but you want more freedom and flexibility instead of working another boring 9-5 job. Well, this episode is also for you too. And even if you aren't looking to become a franchisee or quit your job or whatever, I know you'll still love hearing all the details of this story, and I bet you'll learn some important life lessons regardless. Plus, if you stick around til the end (or scroll down this page), there's a free gift for everyone that's listening. If someone comes to me and says they want to own their own business someday, but they have no skills and they have no idea what to do, the first thing I ask them is, "Do you enjoy being on a computer for long periods of time?" If they say no, I think they should be trying as many new things as possible to see what sticks and what they enjoy doing. Almost anything can be monetized at some point. But if they say yes, and they also say they are pretty tech-savvy, I instantly tell them they should learn web design. Once they start going down the web design path, they are going to have a million questions. And one that comes up often is: is it cheating for a web designer to be using themes/templates on client sites, or even their own website? It really comes down to who you ask, what their background is, and what type of business they are trying to run. My short answer is: you should definitely be starting every website with a premium theme. Hit play on this episode to learn more about why I feel strongly about this, and how this couldskyrocket the amount of clients you get, as well as increase the amount of money you make. Over the years, I've learned a thing or two when it comes to web design and running a business based around it. Instagram is one of the most popular social media platforms out there. I use it constantly, and I have way too many accounts, more than any sane person should be able to handle. On this week's episode, I discuss a great quote from the book I'm currently reading called Essentialism. Here's the quote: Only once you give yourself permission to stop trying to do it all, to stop saying yes to everyone, can you make your highest contribution towards the things that really matter. -Greg McKeown These days, everyone seems to be overwhelmed, including me. I take on too many projects and it's easy to get stressed out by trying to do everything. Fortunately, there's a way out: essentialism. No it's not always going to be easy, but it is very simple. Figure out exactly what you want to do and where you want to be, and eliminate everything that isn't essential to reaching those goals. Getting rid of all the non-essentials allows you to completely focus on the one single priority that is the most important right now. And that's how you'll learn how to work better and put your energy in the best place possible. So give this short episode a listen and hear my thoughts on this awesome quote. Enjoy! On today's episode, I have Terry Gremaux joining us from Dallas, Texas. Terry is one of the leading social media trainers in the entrepreneurial space, as well as the author of a book that will help you Develop a Mind-Blowing Daily Routine and Create Your Dream Life. His story actually starts in a small town in Montana, and at one point he was living paycheck to paycheck. After going through several failures along the way, he finally figured out a system that worked for him. It worked so well that he was able to increase his revenue by over 10x in just a few years! I wanted to control my life. I wanted to have freedom. I wanted something that I've never seen anybody in my family have. I'm very, incredibly introverted at the heart of me, and that obviously held me back in business for awhile. But I just learned to pick my spots. I've learned to do things that I have to do to win. That doesn't mean it has to be comfortable. At the end of the day, I had to change dramatically to have what most other people will never have. You can either believe that life happens to you or life happens for you. And I just choose to believe that life happens for me. Shitty stuff happens to you to make you stronger and make you become better. At that time, I didn't have the vision I have today. I just wanted to be something different. I believe that every decision happens in a moment. You're always gonna get what you tolerate. -Tony Robbins If you want something better, if you want a better life, if you want that business of your dreams, if you want all of that, you have to change what you tolerate and you have to change your priorities in life. When you have the right mindset, you're not gonna win every battle, but you're gonna win the war. The hardest thing to put money into is yourself. Knowledge is not power. Applied knowledge is power. Investing in yourself, through any mechanism possible, is not a choice, it's a priority. You have to make that a priority in your life or you just won't win. The way you treat money is the way you'll receive money. A coach isn't there to hold your hand and get you out of bed. That's not what they're for. A coach is there so you can use their wisdom to point you in the right direction so you don't make the same mistakes. Social media is about attention. This day in age, there's no real new. How can I disrupt attention? Social media is not a place to sell, so don't treat it like that. It's just a tool to get somebody on your email list. In entrepreneurship, we need to be our biggest critic. We have to be hard on ourselves. But we have to be our biggest forgiver as well, because we're gonna mess up every day. If you build relationships consistently, it makes life a heck of a lot easier. You see these people build these businesses and it looks like it happened overnight, but they've really been building relationships their whole life. Embrace the challenges, because they're gonna happen. Business is hard. It's the hardest game you'll ever play. With entrepreneurship, there's a lot of risk involved. But anything with a lot of risk always comes with amazing rewards.   Thanks for listening Be sure to subscribe to the podcast here and I can't wait to share the next episode with you soon! I believe that without question. But there's always a cost. Whether it's your time, your freedom, your social life, personal possessions, monetary value, whatever. We lived like we were poor for quite a few years just so we could be able to do some of the things we've done in the recent years. Some people don't know our full story, or they forget that we struggled all that time or didn't have things, so now that we have things it's like you're an overnight success. And that does happen, but not to many people, and it didn't happen to us. -Brandt Fuqua I don't feel guilty about sharing some of my successes in life, whether it be the equipment or the cars, or whatever, it's not a bragging thing. If it inspires even one person to go out and creates a business, even if they fail, if they give it a shot, I think that's worth it. If there aren't people out there showing you what you can do from nothing, there's not a lot of motivation for some people, they need to see the result. -Brandt Fuqua If you're not making it happen, then you don't want it bad enough. -Zephan Moses Blaxberg You really have to go after the things that you enjoy doing. We don't have enough time on this earth to do the things that we don't like doing. -Zephan Moses Blaxberg With the limited time you have in each and every day, who you surround yourself with is the biggest thing you can control that makes the most difference in your life. -Mike Alexander It's not doing what you love if you're still chained to a desk. -Mike Alexander There are ways to do your own thing and make your life different than what it is. There's a middle ground between staying at something you hate doing and quitting everything to chase what you want. There's a lot of play between those two things that people can do, and those options don't seem to be talked about a lot. -Eric Zimmer I don't see working for a big company as job security. Having skills that I know I can apply in a lot of different places and continuing to have connections, I see that as job security. I'm confident I can go find some way to make money with the skill set I have. I have no faith that Fortune 100 company “X” is any safer than being out on your own. -Eric Zimmer All the monthly payments were really killing us, and to be honest, we didn't even know how much we were spending on everything. We realized what's stopping a lot of people of traveling full time, including ourselves back then, is oftentimes a belief that they don't have the money. But it's just that, it's just a belief. Or they organize their life in a certain way and now they're stuck paying every month for stuff that in the end they don't really need. They'd rather travel than have cable TV, but they have cable TV because they have a TV and it's just convenient, which is the normal thing to do. So now we second guess every financial decision we do, because we're like, do we pay for a better flight or do we spend more money on that meaningless thing. And oftentimes, we choose the better flight. So really it's just our priorities have evolved a lot. -Nick & Gen When you do stuff differently, even though this is not what you're doing, you're questioning other people's lifestyle. They feel like you're challenging what they're doing. And they don't feel comfortable just because you're doing something different. Which doesn't make any sense because it doesn't apply to their life. This is why you sometimes get negative feedback to these kinds of decisions because people just want to feel normal and feel like they're doing the right thing. -Nick & Gen When you get rid of a bunch of stuff, there's definitely this huge sense of freedom that you just can't get anywhere else. -Trevor Gay Without a doubt, I think that just seeing those goals in front of you when you wake up and when you go to sleep are powerful. And it's not magic, it's just literally seeing your goals everyday and that's a simple reminder of what you're working towards. Ask yourself, “Have I done anything today to work towards that goal?” And if you say no, well, there's your motivation right there as soon as you get out of bed. -Trevor Gay Taking care of yourself regardless of your dietary choice is probably one of the most important things you could do in life period. -Trevor Gay One of my missions in life is to just wake people up, shake them up a little bit, and make them realize that you could be gone tomorrow. This is it. You have two decisions: become great and continue to do that, or sit on the couch and be forgotten. -Joshua Santos The ones who look weird to the world and society, those are the guys that I want to stick around with. -Joshua Santos It's so easy to have self-doubts. But maybe that's a good thing because maybe that means you're pushing yourself. -Fat Tony If you calculate the risk, then you're probably not gonna have many regrets. -Fat Tony I hired someone that knew what they were doing to help me and teach me what I needed to do. Then I put in a ton of work, and I'm getting results. -Michael Carbone When people think I'm crazy, that's when I know I'm doing something right. -Michael Carbone Even if you have the most basic knowledge, you shouldn't take it for granted. There's always people who don't know anything about that topic or are just new to it. So you can always find an audience of people who want to learn more. -Michael Carbone I'd rather be great at a couple things than good at everything. -Kolby Kolibas Who you know will get you there, what you know will keep you there. -Kolby Kolibas Risk is just being able to embrace uncertainty when you're going to make a decision. And there are very few decisions that we make that don't have some amount of uncertainty involved. -Kayt Sukel Success to me isn't just about making money, it's about carving out a life for yourself that has wealth in all aspects of it. -Kayt Sukel It all comes down to creating quality content and figuring out how you can get that content in front of as many people as possible (the right people) to the point where it actually makes an impact in their life first. Just give incredible value to the point where they're willing to give you an email address, they're willing to buy your stuff & do business with you, and to really scale that. -Geoff Woods You need to figure out what you're passionate about. You need to surround yourself with people who inspire you, who are already doing what you want to be doing, what you could only hope one day to have the opportunity to do. And when you surround yourself with those types of people they end up opening your eyes and showing you ways that you can do things that you never thought you could do before. -Geoff Woods It took getting everything I thought I wanted to realize that everything I ever wanted wasn't actually what I wanted at all. -Joshua Fields Millburn I don't have a college degree at all and I've never taken a writing class. The reason I started teaching a writing class online was because a lot of people kept asking me a ton of questions about writing. -Joshua Fields Millburn The path that I was on was leading me to a place that I didn't want to be. And so, the bigger risk for me would be staying. -Joshua Fields Millburn Planning on paper is very different than implementing it in real life. -Zombie Dogz It's a big leap and it's scary but you just gotta do it. You gotta commit, just like anything in life. -Zombie Dogz You gotta be willing to work. You gotta be very self-disciplined when you're self-employed. And when you're carving your own path, that's probably one of the hardest parts. -Andrew Norelli Accept that life happens and don't let things side-track you. -Andrew Norelli Something you love doing, something people will pay you for, and something that you're good at. Where those three areas intersect, that's where you can build a business. -Tucker Max If you want to start a business, the easiest thing to do is find a problem that is really painful to people. Then create a solution that they will pay for. -Tucker Max I'm young, I'm ambitious, and if I fail, and it doesn't work out, oh well, at least I tried. And now I know what doesn't work and I can learn from that. But if I never tried, I didn't want to look back ten years from now and say I wish I would have followed my heart and pursued my passions. -Jake Kelfer A lot of people still don't understand why I'm doing what I'm doing, but that doesn't mean they're correct. That just means they don't understand yet. -Jake Kelfer I think that for me, working on one thing solely is ineffective because I will choke it to death, I will worry about it, I'll obsess on it. Whereas, if I have multiple things going, I can work on whatever feels best in whichever company, and I don't worry as much. -Andrea Lake If you can't make your business work with a few thousand dollars starting out, it's probably not going to work, and more money isn't the answer. -Andrea Lake The day that you launch your website is the worst it's ever gonna look, because you're going to improve upon it from there. And then we extended that out and said, the day that you launch any business is the worst that that business is every going to be. So stop waiting until everything is perfect. -Andrea Lake I can tell ya, when you get it working and you realize how free a person you can be, it's absolutely intoxicating. There's actually an adjustment period to get your head around the fact that you can basically do whatever you want. -Pete Sisco I've never met anyone who doesn't have a skill, an ability, or at the very least a passion that can't be of service to somebody who would be happy to pay money for it. -Pete Sisco If you had all the money that you ever needed, if you were 100% debt-free, and you had money in the bank that was going to last you for the rest of your life, you just didn't have to think about it, what would you do? What would you want to do every day? -Pete Sisco The talents are natural, the skills come from repetition. But you have to do the work to get the skill. The talent is something that you're just naturally good at. But ironically, you won't figure out if you're naturally good at it until you do it. -Maj Toure What I do on my social media is, I make little motivational videos. The general public thinks that's for them. It's not. I use it for me at times when I'm down to keep myself motivated. It's like my future self talking to my present self. -Maj Toure We didn't realize it at the time, but the fact that we spent so many years living below our means, not having any debt except for the mortgage, and paying down the mortgage, that's what enabled us to build Goat Milk Stuff so quickly. -PJ Jonas I wasn't going to let someone else or their experience tell me what I could and could not do. I don't let other people's reality impact my reality. -PJ Jonas I think the best entrepreneurs in the world are those that can remain mentally, spiritually, and emotionally peaceful even in the midst of chaos. -RJ Hodges There's no way that you can keep talking about a thing and you don't finally at some point take action on it. I read somewhere that the average adult makes around 35,000 decisions a day. Think how stressed out you'd be if you were indecisive about all of those! I'm a very indecisive person, and sometimes I just have to force myself to make a decision and move on. In most cases, even if it turns out to be the wrong choice, it's not the end of the world. In this episode, I dig into this quote: "Be decisive. A wrong decision is generally less disastrous than indecision." -Bernhard Langer These days, there are so many options for everything. We are all overwhelmed. But if you treat decision-making like a skill, one that you can constantly practice and get better at, you're gonna reduce your stress level drastically. #47 - Why Mastering Yourself is the Ultimate Path to Success with RJ Hodges

On today's episode, I have RJ Hodges joining us. RJ is an inspirational speaker, entrepreneur, and certified life coach. He is also a bestselling co-author of the book Mission Unstoppable, as well as the author of You Can’t Practice At The Game, The Art of Mastering You, Volume One. He says his philosophy of mastering yourself applies to bettering your overall relationships, self esteem, business, the way one perceives, and many other issues we all face daily. The common strategy is to perfect those things that are external, but oftentimes it’s the internal relationship with ourselves that either hinders or allows us to thrive. In many instances our internal conflicts will stop us from going after our dreams and goals. In this episode, RJ also explains the #1 thing about entrepreneurship that if neglected will kill you and your business. This conversation will definitely provide some insight to all entrepreneurs, even the aspiring entrepreneurs, or those with huge goals who are looking to take the next big step. All you have to do is buy one of his books and mention this offer. Enjoy!   Best quotes from this episode When you're young, nothing is about purpose. Nothing is about passion. Everything is about "how much money can I make?" The 1-on-1 coaching, it allows me to be personable. I get the chance to give you the exact thing that you need. Writing allows me to express not just messages that I want to get to other people, but it allows me to express the messages that I feel that are kind of going off in my head. It allows me to get those things out. There's an inner voice that's always talking to us, that's trying to lead and direct our path. We're not always hearing that voice. But writing allows me to kind of just really sit down and pay attention to that voice and just kind of pour some things out and some expressions that a lot of times I think they're for me, they just happen to touch the other people as well. It's something about you being you, that's what the world is looking for. I don't have a problem with you modeling other people, but you can't model another person to the point where you become not authentically you. I don't try to give you something that I haven't done. Everything that I talk about, everything that I teach is something that I've personally gone through. How bad do you really want what you say you want? There's a price behind everything that you want. Everything that we ask for, we're not really prepared to do what's behind it in order to get there. You've been in these particular conditions in your life simply because you're a direct contradiction to what you say you want. If you look at most of us, we want one thing, but everything else about us (mentally, spiritually, physically, emotionally) is the direct opposite of the thing that we want. I don't believe in wasting time. If I can't change the way you see it, we probably can't change the way it is. Results are results. You can't argue with results. If you're going to do anything that a lot of people are doing, you need to first and foremost find your voice. How do you do this different? What particular problem or issue can you solve and for who? Take what is and make it better. Google gives me a window to the world. I'm really big on maintaining a level of peace within myself. I think the best entrepreneurs in the world are those that can remain mentally, spiritually, and emotionally peaceful even in the midst of chaos. There's nothing like seeing a person transform. There have been other people I've not had the privilege to meet personally that I consider mentors. A principle is only as good as the person that it comes into contact with. If I don't learn to take care of me, then I am of no good for anybody else. I can never give what I don't have. Before we can get you to where you're going, we first gotta locate where you are. If I told you that you weren't going to make money for the next two years, would you still pursue this? When you stop chasing money and you start chasing passion and purpose, the money just seems to chase you. I'm going to do it because I love it and because it's the only thing that moves me. Once I got introduced to the world of entrepreneurship, I've never been the same since. It's funny how randomly losing your job motivates you. Everything that you don't think you can do, you figure out a way to do it. When I think about "Risk Without Regret," I think about life and how we play life so safe sometimes. Sometimes we play life so safe that when we look back we ask ourselves, "why didn't I do that?" You're not getting out of this thing alive. You're not going to get a second chance at this life. Calculated risks are very important in life. There's no way that you can keep talking about a thing and you don't finally at some point take action on it. Because when you have a deep-rooted desire, it will not let you rest. The reason most people don't act on a desire is because it's too big for them at the moment. Not understanding that you only see a vision from its end result. I may not be able to fulfill this entire vision today, but what can I do today. When you initiate, direction comes. Sometimes we neglect the baby steps and the growth process. I think the entrepreneur life has some sacrifices. There are some things that you're gonna have to do that the next person is not willing to do. The reward is going to feel so much greater than what I feel right now. Win at life, don't just survive. If it's not going exactly the way you want it to go right now, don't quit. Don't give up because every great person that has reached anything, they have a dark story somewhere. I have not found one extremely successful person to where I couldn't dig somewhere in their past and find something that they went through. The beautiful thing about when you come out of something and it's great and you get everything that you ever desired, you don't even remember how painful it was before. I remember that feeling of not knowing what's next. And sometimes I take myself there because I never want to put myself in that position to where somebody else is able to dictate my life in that way. And that keeps me pushing every single day. It's a little bit difficult in the beginning, but if you fully turn this page, there's always something better coming. Any doors that have ever closed in my life, no matter how hard they were, the next door that opened was so much better. It was 20 times better.   Thanks for listening Be sure to subscribe to the podcast here and I can't wait to share the next episode with you soon! Today's guest sure has her hands full. PJ Jonas is married with eight children in rural Indiana. For almost ten years, the entire family has been running a business called Goat Milk Stuff. When I first heard about the company, I was like, someone is making things out of goat milk? So obviously I had to check it out since my curiosity couldn't take it anymore. I'll let PJ explain the full story about how she came up with this idea, but essentially, she was tired of seeing all of the products that everyone is always using filled with harsh chemicals. So she decided to do something about it. Initially it was just for herself and her family, but she quickly realized that this idea could help a ton of people all around the world. It's primarily an online company, but it is constantly growing into a tourist attraction for people that want to come and check everything out in person. Just like a lot of stories you'll hear on this show, most start off with humble beginnings before the idea really takes off. The Jonas family story is no different. Best quotes from this episode We really understood our target market, because we were our target market. Word of mouth at the beginning, that was really how we had most of our initial growth. Social media is definitely been worth it for us but it's something that we definitely keep in it's perspective and do just try to keep it social. You don't have 8 children in today's society without sacrificing a lot. We didn't realize it at the time, but the fact that we spent so many years living below our means, not having any debt except for the mortgage, and paying down the mortgage, that's what enabled us to build Goat Milk Stuff so quickly. If we had been on the Today Show and we were trying to make it out of the kitchen, there's no way we could have filled those orders. It's kind of the myth of the overnight success, people think it happens so quickly, but they don't see the years and years of hard work and prep work that went into it. It's not about having a profitable business, it's about cash flow. There are plenty of profitable businesses that go out of business because they don't have the cash flow. It's better to grow slowly, because so many businesses will die because of growing too quickly. For every dollar of pre-tax income you want to make, you have to sell five dollars worth of stuff. Your expenses grow so much more the bigger your business gets. Everyday, if you can look and save yourself two steps or save yourself one action, that's going to add up over time. We really underestimate children in our country. They're capable of so much more than we give them credit for. And with the right support and the right tools, so many of them can do great things and I'd love to see more of that. You need to have the work ethic. Hard work covers a multitude of sins and a multitude of weaknesses. I've never met a problem I couldn't solve. You're never staying at one point, you're either growing or you're shrinking. You have to constantly be moving and adjusting and adapting. There were businesses that started, grew, and thrived during the Great Depression. So to say it's not a good time and you can't succeed, I think it's completely false. You always have lots of opportunities, but don't let the good distract you from what's the best. Work hard. Be financially responsible. Have integrity. You don't need all the best stuff to get started. You have to put things in perspective and you have to put money into the things that are going to have a return. If you don't live what you speak and speak what you live, that's going to come back and hurt you. If I'm not willing to use something on my children, I am not willing to sell it. I wasn't going to let someone else or their experience tell me what I could and could not do. I don't let other people's reality impact my reality. I don't want to get bogged down into worrying about what my competitors are doing. I want to care about my customers, I want to give my customers what they want at the best price that I can, and I've got to believe that that's going to take care of itself in the end. It was such a learning experience for my children, to know that what we do isn't just about making money so we can feed ourselves and pay our bills, it's about impacting the lives of others. I tell my children all the time, we are so blessed because we are able to work together, we are able to help people, and we're able to support ourselves doing it. I can't even imagine anything better than that. It doesn't matter what, I have to push through this. When it comes to your small business, trying to be everything to everybody is the perfect plan for failure. If you try to offer everything for the masses, you'll likely attract nobody. Once you know who it's for, then you can go find those people in the world. You're afraid of success or you're afraid of failure. Either way, the root of that is fear. Fuck fear, that shit ain't real. FEAR: False Evidence Appearing Real The talents are natural, the skills come from repetition. But you have to do the work to get the skill. The talent is something that you're just naturally good at. But ironically, you won't figure out if you're naturally good at it until you do it. If you can't be used, you're useless. And in order to be used, you have to do some work. Stop thinking you're a celebrity. You're just a human with a lot more zeros in your bank account. When you're in the public, you're a servant. This shit is gonna take over your life, or you're not doing it right. The small individual moments are priceless and motivational. Sleep is the cousin of death. I'm old enough to get off the porch, but am I brave enough to get off the porch? There's a difference between what's right, what's morally accurate, and what's legally accepted. People respect my movement because of how I moved before the movement. What I do on my social media is, I make little motivational videos. The general public thinks that's for them. It's not. I use it for me at times when I'm down to keep myself motivated. It's like my future self talking to my present self. Stop talking so much, just do shit. Motivate yourself by using yourself, because you know your dreams better than anybody. Everybody thinks they're bigger than the couch, but the couch is undefeated. #42 - Pete Sisco on Building an Online Business to Achieve Personal Freedom

This week's guest is Pete Sisco from Resilient Personal Freedom. In 1996, he decided to invest $300 in himself and start his first online business. Five years later, he monetized that website. 15 years later, it has made him millions, and he still consistently makes an income from it, among other online businesses. After living the conventional life in Idaho with his wife for many years, and after his 6 kids grew up and moved out, Pete and his wife were ready for a different lifestyle. Knowing that their online income source was portable, they decided to sell everything and live out of their suitcases while traveling the world. 10 years later, they're still at it. In fact, he did the interview at the place they're currently staying at in Ireland. We talk about how technology is helping people make predictable monthly income online, why minimalism is a smart way to live, why working in a cubicle is actually more of a risk, how you can achieve an insane amount of personal freedom, and so much more. This is honestly one of the most inspiring conversations that I've had personally. I know you'll find a lot of value in this episode, but for me, Pete really confirmed a lot of things for me that I already knew, but I just needed to hear it from someone like him. After our call, I was so motivated that I began working harder on my online course. And now, I've actually opened up the pre-order for it! So depending on when you hear this episode, it might still be going on, or the full course might have been launched. Either way, you can check it out by visiting: CreateYourOnlineShop.com/PREORDER. All of the details are there and you can get a sneak peek into the course as well. And if the pre-order is still open, you can get it at a discount as well as some free bonuses. Again, it's CreateYourOnlineShop.com/PREORDER. Anyways, I'm so glad Pete reached out to me, and I'm stoked for you to hear this one. So without further adieu, here's my conversation with Pete Sisco. I've had a lifelong passion for the concept of living in freedom. The only passive income I know about is inheritance. You don't have to reinvent wheels, you just have to apply fundamentals in ways that are effective. We're living in a time now, where people can take risks like this, like being completely independent and having a lot more personal freedom. And the risk is actually hugely mitigated. There's 10,000 ways to reliably make money online. When people talk about big dreams, they get discouraged. Find something where you can make solid, reliable money and then use that money to do the dream life. There's this explosion of technology that is changing the world and a lot of people are threatened by it. But at the same time, there is enough technology that any individual can set himself up to make a reliable, durable, predictable income every month that's substantial. People start to realize that more than half of the stuff they're paying for is related to just having their job. The guy trapped in the cubicle is getting to be the anomaly. I like keeping the business the size where I run the business and it doesn't run me and I have maximum personal freedom. There's never been less risk than there is now. I can tell ya, when you get it working and you realize how free a person you can be, it's absolutely intoxicating. There's actually an adjustment period to get your head around the fact that you can basically do whatever you want. You can't do it overnight, but you really can engineer a lifestyle that gives you whatever amount of freedom you want. Offer something of quality, do what you say you're gonna do, and treat people right. The things that work online, the fundamentals, are the things that worked 100 years ago. And they'll work 100 years from today. If you want to sleep well at night, spend time constructing a business that has durable elements to it that will offer honest value and keep offering. You have to be in the game before you get lucky. There's just nothing that delivers the independence and the personal freedom that having an online business does. I've never met anyone who doesn't have a skill, an ability, or at the very least a passion that can't be of service to somebody who would be happy to pay money for it. If you had all the money that you ever needed, if you were 100% debt-free, and you had money in the bank that was going to last you for the rest of your life, you just didn't have to think about it, what would you do? What would you want to do every day? Some people climb the ladder of success only to discover you put it against the wrong wall. -Joseph Campbell That's the thing about the online world, it's a big transparent economy and the answers are right there. #41 - Andrea Lake Teaches Us How She's Made Millions Selling Tshirts & Stickers

Today's featured guest is Andrea Lake. Back when she was 18, she decided to skip college and just go straight into building a business. Her first business started as small as a business can start, but it still grew pretty quick, especially for someone right out of high school. A few years later, Andrea decided to give clothing a chance and built her first apparel business. I'll let her explain all the various things she did with the clothing lines, but this was also around the time when she had some stickers printed too. In the late 90's, she ended up starting a whole business around just stickers. At the time of this recording, she actually started 14 companies! More recently, she has a new company called Lessons.biz where she teaches others exactly how to build a tshirt empire along side her business partner Dan Caldwell. Dan was a co-founder of the huge clothing brand Tapout, so obviously you know they are more than qualified to be teaching on this topic. Anyways, we talk about various ways to hyper-accelerate a brand, why stickers are like minting money, when to hire people, why competition is a good thing, and how you can easily prove if your business idea is a viable concept or not. There are so many great takeaways from this episode and I've been eagerly waiting to get this one out to you. So without further adieu, here's my conversation with Andrea Lake. Enjoy! I will never be short of money again. I know that I can just make something and go sell it now. I had very recently quit smoking pot, which made me far more productive. One night, I got a 6-pack of Sierra Nevada, invited over one of my best friends, and sat down and came up with like 200 slogans. And then I chose 98 of them and launched the line with 98 slogans, which is ridiculous, it's way too many, but it worked out well. We had a connection with Blink 182, but they saw my stuff at Warped Tour when they were not famous yet, and they were like, "We love your stuff." And I'm like, "Here's a bag full of stuff, just wear it on stage today." And they felt this loyalty to my brand. Every entrepreneur has this moment where you just feel like your company is gonna fail. And the people that make it in life, and certainly in business, are the people that just keep trying something else and will pivot with it and will not stick really strongly to the concept that they think should work. It's like the Craigslist model, where you don't have to have the most beautiful thing, but you do have to have something that is very functional. Stickers are like magic, it's like minting money. People buy them, you print them for them, they get the stickers, they give them away for free, and then they order more. I created lessons.biz because I was so tired of seeing people on the internet that were making 100% of their money from selling products that just teach people how to make money. Like these people literally don't know how to make money, they know how to con people into giving them money. There is actually a formula on how to run most companies. I think that for me, working on one thing solely is ineffective because I will choke it to death, I will worry about it, I'll obsess on it. Whereas, if I have multiple things going, I can work on whatever feels best in whichever company, and I don't worry as much. I think worrying is a really damaging thing. I think it's underrated because people see it as normal, but I think it's super problematic to spend your time worrying. In general, when you're starting out, until you have a company that's supporting you, obviously you shouldn't spread yourself too thin. If somebody isn't competing against you, there's probably a good reason why it's an ineffective space to be in. If you have something that a million people are doing, it means that a million people want whatever that product is. So you just have to do it better than them, or market better than them. You can pack boxes better than anybody else at your business, but is that how you want to be spending your time today? Put a dollar figure on your time. If it's not something that is making my company money, or something that I truly must do, or something that I love, somebody else should be doing it. If you can't make your business work with a few thousand dollars starting out, it's probably not going to work, and more money isn't the answer. Make money first. If you can make money first, then you know you have a viable concept. You have to prove your concept first. And you have to know that your concept is something that people will actually pick up their wallet out of their pocket and take money out of it and hand it to you. Not just tell you that they'll buy something, but actually physically buy something. I knew nothing when I started out, and I went about it the really hard way. You will hyper accelerate the growth of any company if you're surrounded by like-minded people that are entrepreneurs, even if they have really diverse business backgrounds compared to you. I think every entrepreneur should have a really good filter between what they're thinking and what they actually say. The day that you launch your website is the worst it's ever gonna look, because you're going to improve upon it from there. And then we extended that out and said, the day that you launch any business is the worst that that business is every going to be. So stop waiting until everything is perfect. Just launch something and start making money and then correct from there. Don't be good, don't be great, it is your job to be extraordinary and become irreplaceable. I self-financed all of my companies which is possibly the biggest risk and I ended up severely in debt because of it.   Thanks for listening Be sure to subscribe to the podcast here and I can't wait to share the next episode with you soon! I'm a big believer in taking the risks and following your heart, as long as you're willing to put in the work. Take advantage of the opportunities that are in front of you. One of the things I like to do is listen to those that are more experienced than me, because I'm so young and I have so much to learn. I have mentors in all different aspects of my life, and I think that's a huge reason for a lot of my success so far. My first company was just an incredible start to entrepreneurship and really fired me up for my future and what I'm currently working on. When I was growing up, it was go to school, get good grades, go to college, and then you're probably just gonna end up getting a job and start paying the bills. Things change and situations come up where you have to adapt and make different decisions. I'm young, I'm ambitious, and if I fail, and it doesn't work out, oh well, at least I tried. And now I know what doesn't work and I can learn from that. But if I never tried, I didn't want to look back ten years from now and say I wish I would have followed my heart and pursued my passions. I don't have the knowledge of somebody that has had ten extra years of life experience on me, but what I do have is just an immense hunger and desire to learn and continue to grow and to make an impact. The only shortcut in life is to start now. -David Kelfer A lot of people still don't understand why I'm doing what I'm doing, but that doesn't mean they're correct. That just means they don't understand yet. It's all about achieving your own definition of success, not just what everyone wants you to achieve and what everyone might assume success is. When you can combine hustle with working hard and working smart, I think that's when you really create something great. Enjoy the journey and be in the moment. -Sheri Kelfer Sometimes entrepreneurship scares the shit out of me, but at the same time, that's what excites me. Fear is important to acknowledge as long as it doesn't control you. Everytime you meet someone, it is an interview. When you combine entertainment with education, and to do it in a good organized way, the result and the value can be extraordinary. One of the biggest risks that I've taken was turning down multiple full-time job offers before graduation and deciding that I was going to pursue my passion. At the time, a lot of people criticized my decision. But I knew that it's what I wanted to do and it was aligning with my goals and my definition of success. And so I took that risk and I have not regretted it one day since then. Thanks for listening Be sure to subscribe to the podcast here and I can't wait to share the next episode with you soon! If you're in the entertainment business, you've got to be able to tell a great story. That was fine for awhile. I made pretty good money, it was fun, it was interesting, but I had no desire to be a marketing guru. It's hard for me to think of a writer that I've ever met who's a real entrepreneur. It's a totally different mindset. Everyone wants to be a star, no one wants to put in the work. I became obsessed with this idea because she called me out on it. Socrates didn't write a word down. Plato wrote everything down. Jesus never wrote any of his words down. Buddha never wrote any of his words down. None of these people wrote their words down, a scribe did. So why can't I create a modern process for scribes? I felt so stupid, I felt so dumb. Because there was nothing stopping me from doing this idea like 6 years ago. I could have had this years ago if I didn't have such limited thinking. Very few people have big ideas in them. Most people know something that's valuable to a small group of people. If you're a professional and you get paid to do something, you're probably getting paid for the knowledge and wisdom in your head. So it's not "How can I sell copies of my book?", the question is, "How can I put my knowledge and wisdom in my book and use the book as an all-purpose marketing tool for me or my company or my career?" Once you look at a book not as an end goal but as a marketing tool, then it totally changes everything. The ideas that most people hold in their head about publishing are ideas that publishing companies think are important, not ideas that people think are important. We're in the business of producing the absolute best books possible for the author. I would say, at best, 20% of people have genuinely either new or original ideas. What do you have to say that's interesting and valuable to an audience? I wish I was one of those people who from an early age was always hustling and selling and creating value. At Book in a Box, I just fired myself. We just hired a CEO to take over for me. There's no bigger waste of time than trying to learn how to do something you're bad at. You're way better off hiring someone to do that for you so you can do the things you're really good at. All the critical mistakes we've made in our business have either come down to being too arrogant about our knowledge & not questioning enough, and hiring the wrong people. That's the cool thing about business though, it's like baseball. It's even better than baseball. In baseball, if you hit .300, you're a Hall of Famer. In business, you can hit .100 and be a massive success. If you're going to fail, that's fine. But you need to understand why. If you're taking 9 different ideas and failing 9 different times, I think the problem might be you. There's so many people trying to teach the wrong things. Some people want lifestyle businesses and there's nothing wrong with that. If you want to be a baller entrepreneur and you want to build a massive baller company, you don't want to be selling your time. You don't want to be in the business, you want to be in the business of creating leverage for other people. There's a limit to how big you can scale an agency. There's no limit to how big you can scale a software-based process. If you have problems turning what you love into a business, it's probably some psychological issue you have, it's not the process. The process is very simple. It's not easy to do, but it's very simple to understand. Something you love doing, something people will pay you for, and something that you're good at. Where those three areas intersect, that's where you can build a business. Most people, when they say "how do I turn my passion into a business," what they are really asking is "how can I get paid to do nothing." That's bullshit. No way to do that. If you want to start a business, the easiest thing to do is find a problem that is really painful to people. Then create a solution that they will pay for. Starting a business is really easy if all you do is think about it in terms of other people's problems.   Thanks for listening Be sure to subscribe to the podcast here and I can't wait to share the next episode with you soon! You gotta be very self-disciplined when you're self-employed. And when you're carving your own path, that's probably one of the hardest parts. I think part of success in any alternative career path is to start as early as you can. The risk part comes when you're basically doing something and you're making no money. I think that's another mistake people make, they start then stop. They start and they stop like five or six times. Accept that life happens and don't let things side-track you. I think you have to have hustle and work hard, I don't care how funny you are. You can't just be funny. If you don't have fear, then you don't know what you're doing. What's wrong with you if you don't have fear? You should have some fear or you're not paying attention to life or to your career. There has to be some level of fear that's at least driving you and making you better at the very least. Definitely some self-doubt too. That's how you get better. Nobody's stuff is perfect. If I feel like I did everything that I could've done and had planned on doing and it didn't work, no, that's perfectly ok. That does not bother me. Not at all. You'll drive yourself crazy if it does. If you start trying to please everybody all at once, whether it be industry people or crowd-members, then you're probably gonna end up pleasing either no one or you're gonna end up pleasing people and it's not gonna matter. An important part for people to express themselves, to challenge conventional thinking, and to fight the establishment & people with power. People pay a little closer attention to a message in their inbox, as long as it's from someone they know. Why do we have words when we have cleavage? I think that's maybe why I kept going in comedy. I've had a lot of little moments where I was so glad that I didn't stop trying and that I never quit. And that keeps me going. You appreciate it more when it's a long process and you have to learn everything along the way. If you don't know whether to say yes or no, then just say yes. It's a balancing act, because there are times when it actually is in your benefit to say no. So many people struggle trying to start a business because they think they have to know everything. And if there's something they don't know, they think they have to figure it out on there own. Search around on the internet and you can literally find the answers to every single question you could possibly have. But a lot of times, it makes sense to seek out advice from others. The problem lies in who you ask though. If you're trying to start a food truck, you shouldn't get getting advice from a lawyer. True, the lawyer might be successful, but you should be reaching out to people that are doing exactly what you're trying to do. And those people better be successful at it and be a couple steps further than you are. Hopefully this episode makes you realize that a lot of people out there are willing to help you. You just have to build up your confidence to ask them for help or to pick their brain for an hour. Remember, if you want to get something you've never had, you're gonna have to do things you've never done. Get out of your comfort zone, that's where the magic happens! Hot dogs have been an American classic for decades, and in most cases, they've been boring the whole time. Not anymore. David and Lee Ann VanArtsdalen have created a culinary experience like no other with their gourmet hot dogs and the amazing toppings they add to each one. But don't just take my word for it, check out their Facebook page. A quick glance and you'll see tens of thousands of fans—and I'm talking diehard/raving fans—that spread the Zombie Dogz brand like wildfire. We're a caring business. It's important to be socially-responsible and we're not just in it for the money. People really respected the fact that we admitted when we were wrong and just made it right. And that's all you can do. We aren't perfect, we're still human beings. It's our business, it's our livelihood. We have to make it work, and you have to make adjustments. Location is the most important thing. Just because you have a concept and a good idea, you're not gonna put it in the worst spot in town. Obviously you want a lot of people in your line, but you want to see the other people succeeding also. I think if I knew everything we know now before we started, I don't know if I would have done it. We work 90-100 hours a week for 8-9 months straight. A lot of people don't implement their ideas because they're fearful. We don't want to disappoint anybody, and we take that very seriously. You can't teach people experience. You just have to do it. I can't tell you how your business is going to run, but here's the basics. And it's up to you now to implement it and work hard and make it work on your own. Your heart has to be in it, you have to want it. You can't just think about the money, because that didn't come to us for a long time. You need to give first, then receive later. It's in our blood, but I never saw myself running my own business. Take your time and do it right the first time. We could have just done it one or two days a week on the weekends and it would have been fine, but you have to do it full-time. It's a big leap and it's scary but you just gotta do it. RWR-032: Being Bored vs. Being Lazy

When I hear people say they are bored, it blows my mind. How can anybody be bored these days? With all of the technological advances, everyone has access to everything and we are all connected 24/7. There's no reason anyone should ever be bored. Being lazy on the other hand, I think we all get stuck in that phase from time to time. People that say they are bored, some of these things come to mind: no goals, they are on cruise control, no imagination, taking things for granted, no hobbies, and more. I get lazy sometimes, and it's usually because I get distracted too much, I procrastinate, lack of motivation, and poor habits. If you notice the people around you are saying they are bored, be careful, they might drag you down to their level. But don't think that means it's ok to be lazy. Both are places you don't want to be stuck. My quick tips would be to eat better, exercise, get high-quality sleep, get some hobbies, increase your skills, and cancel all distractions. Easier said than done, but everything in life is a marathon, not a sprint. Take it one step at a time and you'll get there with consistent action and positive daily habits. It took getting everything I thought I wanted to realize that everything I ever wanted wasn't actually what I wanted at all. I made really good money in the corporate world (six figures), but I spent even better money. And that equation never works. Why the hell are you so happy? -Ryan Nicodemus When I find value in something, I tend to share it with my friends and family. I think that's the meaning in life: growing and giving. The more you grow, the more you have to give. When you look in the rearview, your scars make up the best part of yourself. When you buy stuff to be happy, the happiness doesn't last far past the checkout line. Happiness is when our short term actions align with our long term values. Just being busy for the sake of busy is a supposed sign of productivity. But it's not necessarily productive. Busy usually gets in the way of true meaningful work. I was living the ideal life to a lot of people. And the reason it was ideal to them is it was something they aspired to be. But they didn't realize that once they got there, it wasn't going to make them happy. As I climbed the corporate ladder, I got closer to these guys that I aspired to be like. And what I realized as I got closer to them, they were miserable. At least the majority of them were. There's nothing wrong with making money, I'm certainly not allergic to money. But it's no longer the primary driver for doing what I do. Debt is an anchor in our lives. There is no such thing as good debt. I found that the best way to give myself a pay raise was to spend less money. Minimalism is a tool that allows me to get rid of the excess so I can focus on whats truly important. It doesn't mean it's a perfect life, and it's certainly not an easy life. It's just about living a simpler life, one that is within our means. Being on autopilot tends to lead us into bad decisions. Going with the flow is easy. And if you go with the flow long enough, you end up at the rapids. And then you're in a world of hurt because you weren't prepared for that. That's why you'll never see me tweet a picture of my breakfast, because I don't find that it adds value to other peoples lives. I like to do other things that make me uncomfortable, it's what I call my discomfort zone. I find that the place from which I grow the most is when I put myself in a bit of an uncomfortable situation. As we move along a path from a novice to intermediate to an expert, it just has to do with putting in the work. Being willing to drudge through the drudgery. I don't have a college degree at all and I've never taken a writing class. The reason I started teaching a writing class online was because a lot of people kept asking me a ton of questions about writing. Don't start a business until someone asks you to start it. -Derek Sivers The teacher learns more than the student. If you want to get better at just about anything, teach it. Even if you're not very good at it. Because it will force you to communicate to yourself in the same way you would communicate to others. I'm constantly trying to find new ways to spread the minimalism message to people. We wanted to show people that minimalism isn't a radical lifestyle, it's a practical lifestyle. While all these people lead considerably different lives, they all share one thing in common: they're all striving to live a meaningful life with less. Sometimes you wake up in the middle of the day. Sometimes you wake up in the middle of your life. -Yarrow Kraner That's what happened to me. I woke up in the middle of my life and realized that there was more to life than just bills and money and status and achievement. There was something else, and I needed to find that. Ultimately, we all just want to live a more meaningful life. The path that I was on was leading me to a place that I didn't want to be. And so, the bigger risk for me would be staying. Awesome job, made a lot of money, work from home.A series of defining moments cause you to take action. End of 2013, colleague had a stroke at 35.Geoff and his wife just had a baby and just bought a house, wife was a stay at home mom. If something happens to him, the income stops. He didn't have passive income, that kept him up at night. The week after this, his company decided to slash his income by 40%. Wondered how he was gonna pay the mortgage and put food on the table. Heard the Jim Rohn quote, "You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with."If I wanted to be earning 7-figures a year, I needed to surround myself with 7-figure-earners. If I wanted to be in control of my schedule and be a successful entrepreneur then I needed to surround myself with people who are already living that life and seeking advice from them instead of seeking advice from the people who had not done it.It all started because I focused on one thing, which was forming relationships with the right people.Launched The Mentee Podcast in January 2015. Fast forward a year later, was able to quit a $200k a year sales job in just 10 months.Partnered up with Gary Keller and Jay Papasan of Keller Williams Realty to launch a big media company, required him to relocate to Austin, Texas. He was in SoCal almost his whole life. This is a job where at any single moment, my company can decide to shrink my territory, boost my quota, or change my commission rate. I have zero control. Or I could legitimately decide to leave and partner up with the guy who's built the largest real estate company in the world, a guy who is a billionaire. What's more secure for my long term growth and my long term well being? How would you describe what you do these days? Content. It all comes down to creating quality content and figuring out how you can get that content in front of as many people as possible (the right people) to the point where it actually makes an impact in their life first. Just give incredible value to the point where they're willing to give you an email address, they're willing to buy your stuff & do business with you, and to really scale that.I was limiting myself. My perception of what was possible was clearly off.The first time he sat down with a heavy hitter, and they asked how they could help him, he said his goal is to get $12k/month in passive income within the next 7 years. (That was a year ago that he said that.) And as he said it, he didn't really feel confident. He couldn't see how that could ever possibly happen in his life.At the end of the day, you have to be able to describe where you need help in one sentence, very clearly. And the guy went, "No way man." Geoff said, "Ya I know, it's too high of a goal." And the guy said, "You'll do it way faster than that." And since that guy had already done it, it was qualified, and it really opened Geoff's mind. He was limiting himself.I know exactly what my one thing is, and I'm integrating it into every conversation.80% of everything you need already exists in your circle of influence. The people you know, your existing relationships could already give you what you need 80% of the time, but the problem is you just don't tap into your relationships.Fast forward, he surrounded himself with amazing people for a year. Now Geoff's goal is to get to $25k/month within the next 6 months. Now what changed? Simple. He just surrounded himself with people who had already done it instead of trying to figure it out on his own and crossing his fingers.I'm going to the people that have done it and said tell me what to do.I didn't ask for anything. They asked "what's up" and I told them what's up. What ends up happening is they start asking questions. Now I'm able to tell them exactly what I'm looking for and either they're the person, they know the person, or I've planted a seed and when they meet that person they're gonna remember me and they'll consider making the introduction. This is how I have made so many connections, because I just simply tell everybody and their mom where I need help.Don't let the simplicity undermine the significance. It's not that hard, you just gotta put some consistency behind it.Stop whining. Stop making up excuses because there's gonna be another guy out there or another girl out there who won't make an excuse and who will take action. And they will be the one's who get it done. His mentor Dave, he heard him speak at an event, and he knew he had to talk to him. Had no idea what he could say to him.I have mentors for everything. From business to finances to relationships to health.I tried something different, I dropped my ego. It's situations like that, that you can't help but say it's meant to be. But you'd never know if you didn't take action. There's so many things laying right in front of you in your life right now and you have no idea because you don't dare to take action. You don't dare to step out of your comfort zone and take a shot.Recognizing that the worst thing that could happen is that you get a no and you're just as well off as you would be if you did nothing at all.For his membership program, his goal is to have 700 people paying him $37/month ($25k/mo).I don't believe that you need to go to college or that you need to get a higher level of degree to be successful. When I look at the things that I actually learned in college, I'm not applying a single damn thing. I invested six figures for an experience. Which I loved the experience, but if I had invested that in starting a business, I'd be way further off now.You need to figure out what you're passionate about. You need to surround yourself with people who inspire you, who are already doing what you want to be doing, what you could only hope one day to have the opportunity to do. And when you surround yourself with those types of people they end up opening your eyes and showing you ways that you can do things that you never thought you could do before. You don't have to look at what society tells you is the way, you can write your own ticket. You can do it your way, you just gotta surround yourself with the right people along that way.You end up making a lot of sacrifices but you have to recognize that sometimes you have to do what it takes even when you don't want to, to get what you want in the long run.I surround myself with frickin ridiculously amazing people. It's my drug. It's already adding a lot of value but the coolest part is the free online companion course that comes with it. This book is all about testing your next business idea at the beginning so you don't waste a lot of time and money. Most people just build something and hope people want it. You know that old quote, "If you build it, they will come." That's terrible biz advice and that's why their business usually fails. So if this sounds awesome to you, just visit riskwithoutregret.com/willitfly and order this book today!Best quotes from this episode:I teach something I know and then package it up beautifully and offer it to people who want to learn that topic. We all have something that we know and love and are passionate about that other people want to learn as well.I didn't want a backup plan, because to me, that's a distraction. If you're not hosting webinars at this point, you're probably leaving money on the table.Webinars help you build your list, create relationships, and make sales, all at once.I'm really passionate about being on that stage and helping inspire people. These influencers are not these untouchable people.I remember thinking about how insane the idea was, and that made me want to do it.I hired someone that knew what they were doing to help me and teach me what I needed to do. Then I put in a ton of work, and I'm getting results.I don't need a Plan B. I just obsess over Plan A and find a way to get it done.I needed the risk of quitting my job to get results. I needed that risk to scare me into taking action. For me, comfort equals complacency. The more fear I had of failure, that fear makes me take action. If you're spending all day working on it because you have nothing else and nothing is paying your bills, trust me, you'll find a way to make it work. It's always easier to see someone else do something first and then you can do it because it becomes simpler. When people think I'm crazy, that's when I know I'm doing something right.Remove yourself from toxic environments and from people that tell you that you can't do it. Surround yourself with people who are more positive and more motivating. You can know the most basic thing and there's still people who have never heard of it.Even if you have the most basic knowledge, you shouldn't take it for granted. There's always people who don't know anything about that topic or are just new to it. So you can always find an audience of people who want to learn more.If you're struggling with something, tell your struggles. People will relate to it.Life is very fragile, and the more you sit and think about it, the more it makes you want to live your life. There's a lot of beauty in facing situations where you're afraid. If you just think about things and don't actually dive into them yourself, you might feel a little more afraid until you actually do it.The more you think about something—versus actually doing it—the riskier it will seem.Never in a hurry, never worried, never desperate, and never stopping short. If you're not where you want to be, do something about it.Live your truth and live your dream. No one ever did anything big out of comfort. Because comfort makes you sit back and take things for granted. When you're in a moment of discomfort, that's when you take massive action to get out of it, because you want to move away from that pain into a moment of pleasure.Connect with Michael:Website: michaelcarbone.caUnleash Yourself Podcast: michaelcarbone.ca/unleashyourselfInstagram: @michaelcarbone8Twitter: @michaelcarbone8Facebook: facebook.com/michaelcarbone8People, websites, & products mentioned:Tim FerrissThe 4-Hour Work WeekLewis HowesThe School of GreatnessMarc FittJon NastorKeith BreseéThanks again for listening and reading the show notes. I'm in the middle of this amazing book and I stumbled across this epic quote: "You can make your dream happen a lot quicker with two simple tips: 1) cutting out the distractions, and 2) focusing on what is most important." This quote was taken from the book Stop Chasing Influencers by Kimanzi Constable and Jared Easley. Listen to this short podcast episode where I dig in deeper and really explain what this quote means and how it can relate to you.Subscribe to the podcast!Let's face it, distractions are everywhere. It's 2016 and you are flooded with social media, smart phones, movies, tv, etc. everywhere you go. It's extremely hard to block all of that out unless you lock yourself in a dark room with no connection to the outside world.Ok, that's probably a bit extreme, but in this day in age, you must focus on what's important. To do that, you have to discipline yourself. Remove everything that distracts you as best as you can. I took the tv out of my bedroom and cancelled my Netflix. That's a start and it was something easy to let go of.So what are your big goals? What do you want to accomplish with your time in your life? What's the one thing you need to focus on that will get you there? Go do that one thing. Today. Right now.Again, I highly recommend this book. I love it when people reach out to me about being on the podcast, which is exactly what this episode's featured guest did. Fat Tony is a 33 year old freelance photographer and entrepreneur from Long Beach, California. As soon as the call started, I could tell this was gonna be a super exciting and entertaining episode to be a part of. As well as the type of episode I couldn't wait to share with you, so here we are! He's been to 35 countries, he landed his dream job right out of college at one of the top magazines in the world, and everything seemed to be going just as he planned. But then he just wasn't feeling it anymore, he was searching for new dreams. With no plan B or safety net, most people would be terrified. Not this guy. Hhe quit his job and went straight back to traveling around the globe like a badass!Well I don't wanna give too much away, so hit that play button below and get to know Fat Tony's story and what he's currently working on. This is an episode you won't stop listening to, so get comfy or turn the cruise control on in your car, and enjoy!Subscribe to the podcast!Featured products/services:Ask. by Ryan Levesque. I finished this book in less than 2 days. I was so interested in the content and I literally couldn't put it down. The first half talks about his story and the second half explains the "Ask Formula" that he's developed. It's basically about asking questions to prospects, getting them into a really advanced sales funnel, and then transitioning them into customers through a series of surveys and stories. But it's all about asking the right questions, which most businesses don't do, which means they think they know what customers want when they actually don't. So if this sounds interesting to you, go check it out at here!Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook by Gary Vaynerchuk. The second book is by one of my favorite entrepreneurs and this is his 3rd book. I've talked about his first book before called Crush It!, and I have his second book on my Amazon Wishlist called The Thank You Economy, and now I just started reading this one a couple days ago. It's all about how to tell your story in a noisy social world. The title of the book means that, just like boxing, you want to throw a few small punches before you throw the big knockout punch. So that means a few subtle soft sells then a more direct sell. It's about building trust with your community and speaking the native language for each individual social media platform. I'll have this book done in a few days and I'll be anxiously awaiting his next book which is due out in March. But if you want to grab this book and really ramp up your social media strategy, just visit this link now!Show notes:[04:45] Tell us who you are...[05:50] Did you go to college for photo/video?I realized that the designer sits at a computer all day and a photographer travels the world and does a bunch of cool shit.[07:05] Did you do freelance work while you had a fulltime job?I got a taste of this lifestyle, of this freedom, and world travel, and adventure. That was really what made me think, eventually I want to have a life more like this.[09:55] Seems like you have the world traveler life for sure now. Do you?I definitely got bit by the travel bug when I was at the job because I was getting paid to do the traveling. You can have a great time in a shitty place or you can have a shitty time in a great place, depending on who you're with and your experiences while you're there.[15:15] How did you get into the vegan lifestyle? If you don't know what the ingredients are, don't put it in your body.[18:40] Have you always been a person that goes to the gym?[23:00] Talk about the 5th grade family trip in NYC and how you fell in love with photography...I love that feeling of looking through a viewfinder, finding a composition, taking the image, getting it back, and being able to share that with people. If I put my mind to something, I was going to do it.If you set goals and work towards them, it's gonna happen.[25:25] Have you always wanted to be an entrepreneur?[27:00] How did you get into video?I basically learned on the job which was great because I was getting paid to hone in my skills and become better at this.Everybody watches YouTube videos and now I'm just one of the people who makes them.[31:25] What did that feel like on your last day of your job to quit and go on your own?I don't want to change these things about myself. This is who I am. I'm proud of this. This is what I think is right for me.[37:45] Did you go straight into freelance right after you quit? When you're pretty good at a lot of things, it's hard to release some control and trust other people.I needed to work with people on a more regular basis than just sitting in my condo by myself.Having a partner not only helps keep me sane, it helps me push myself further, and it gives me another creative eye to help look at the stuff that I might oversee. It also gives me more ideas, plus it's a lot more fun to work with somebody than alone all the time.[42:30] Talk about the podcast you started...As I was listening to these a ton, it just became natural for me to want to create my own.I just want to have interesting conversations with people that I might not normally have otherwise, record them, and share them with people. -Tim FerrissIf you do the homework, the test is easy. -Dave Mirra[49:35] What is Break Parallel?[56:55] Has social media helped you over the years?I've definitely had interactions with people that have followed my personal Instagram and have been inspired to make positive changes in their lives just because I set a good example that they can follow. It's a no-brainer, it's 2016 now, so social media is a part of everything.[59:55] Do people always tell you that you're "living the dream?"Yes, this is my dream, but if you have your own dreams, then it's up to you to make it happen. You can have everything else you need, but if you don't have the mindset to make it happen, then you're going nowhere. If there's something ingrained in you that is holding you back, you need to do a little self-analysis on yourself to figure out why you're like that, undo that, then change that about yourself.[1:02:30] What inspires you?[1:04:10] Is there anything unique about what you do?I accel at telling those stories and I accel at that quick workflow that allows me to deliver the product faster than just about anyone else.[1:06:20] Were there things you had to give up early on to get to where you are now?I had given up so much, and didn't even realize it, to have a full-time job.[1:07:25] Any fears you had back then or now?It was hard for me to give it up because it was what I knew and what I loved.Leaving the full-time job? Not so much. But making a full transition to a different industry was a big fear. There was definitely an ego component to it where I enjoyed having a certain status, I enjoyed people knowing who I was. And nowadays that I'm making that transition, I don't really care if people know who I am.I want to do the work that inspires me and that energizes me and that leads me to my goals, but I don't necessarily need to be the face of the work. I'm happy enough now letting the work speak for itself.[1:12:05] Any mastermind groups or mentors in your life? It's so easy to have self-doubts. But maybe that's a good thing because maybe that means you're pushing yourself.[1:14:40] Where did the name Fat Tony come from?[1:16:45] Has there been a moment that stands out that really makes you proud to do what you do?I think the biggest compliment you can ever get is for somebody to say that you've inspired them.[1:20:45] Is being an entrepreneur easier if you're single? This is cool and I'm appreciative, but even though I'm here and doing these things, I'm lonely.[1:22:30] What's a big risk you've taken? If you calculate the risk, then you're probably not gonna have many regrets.[1:23:20] What's the best way to connect with you?Connect with Fat Tony:Website: fattonybmx.comInstagram: @fattonybmxTwitter: @fattonybmxFacebook: facebook.com/fattonybmxBreak Parallel: breakparallel.comThe Expansion Project Podcast: theexpansionprojectpodcast.comPeople, websites, & products mentioned:Best Speech You Will Ever Hear - Gary YourofskyForks Over KnivesCrossFitRob DardenPurePharmaA Day in the Life of Brooke EnceFUEL TVJoe RoganTim FerrissAndy HurleyDave Mirrahttp://theexpansionprojectpodcast.com/Ben BergeronJohn ResigSecrets of the Millionaire MindDarlene AdamusikThanks again for listening and reading the show notes. One of the coolest things he's done recently was connecting Andy Frisella and Sean Whalen together. Both of these guys are in your face, smart business men, and have big followings. On today's episode, I dig into this quote: "Everyone wants to be successful until they see what it actually takes." It's true, we all want to be successful, but in reality, only a handful of people really want to put in the work. The work that goes on behind the scenes.Subscribe to the podcast! Most people just see someone's "highlight reel" and consider everything they've done an overnight success. It's almost never the case. Ever. There are early mornings, late nights, skipped meals, mood swings, working on vacation, missing parties, blood, sweat, tears, and more. But these things usually aren't published for the world to see.People also have a bad habit of attributing success to luck, which also isn't usually the case. Unless you define luck the way I do: "Luck is where preparation meets opportunity." If you spend your life working your ass off, consistently cruising down the path towards your goals, you will undoubtedly run into some pretty amazing opportunities. When these opportunities come knocking at your door, you'll be ready and you'll accept them with open arms. You prepared for them, you were not quote unquote lucky. So the next time you see an instagram post of someone jetsetting across Europe, or stoked about all these new clients they are booking, or how insanely happy they are to be getting paid for doing work they love, don't roll your eyes. There are years of hustling and grinding it out that they aren't posting about. But I guarantee you, if you ask them what their key to success is, they will say things like: patience, putting in the work, consistency, positive habits, exercise, research, taking action, setting huge goals, Thanks again for listening! About 3 months ago, I posted a photo of a 500 square foot tiny house on my instagram. Something about a small living space really interests me. The idea of just using it to do the basic things in life. Something like this would most definitely encourage you to get outdoors more and live more.In the comments, one of my friends said I should talk to Trevor Gay from Heart Of It All House. I had never heard of him before, so my curiosity led me to his profile where I did some basic research on him and what he was up to. Turns out he only lives about 30 minutes away, we have mutual friends, and share a lot of common interests. I wondered how we never crossed paths over the years! With that being said, you'll have to listen to this inspiring episode where we talk about his tiny house journey, why he's vegan, some of his favorite books, and so much more. Enjoy!Subscribe to the podcast!Show notes:[03:10] Meet Trevor! Tell us who you are, where you work, etc. It's a little ironic, risk without regret could be used to describe my entire career.[06:20] Have you always been into bikes?I didn't care about getting paid, I just wanted to work there.[10:05] Talk about the clothing line you started...I learned a really hard and valuable lesson at an early age and that's really stuck with me ever since.[12:00] If you could do another clothing line, what would you do different? Explain the non-profit you work with...Your morals, your values, and your mission need to be pretty clear, because people are more conscious than ever of everything.[13:45] Have you always lived in Ohio?[15:55] The HGTV show, how did that come about? Talk about your tiny house and minimalism...You really find out how much stuff you actually have when you reduce by 80%.When you get rid of a bunch of stuff, there's definitely this huge sense of freedom that you just can't get anywhere else.To detach from things and to let go of things that you think you care about is really mentally healthy.[23:35] Do you have any side businesses?[25:50] Has video work always been a passion of yours?Show Sponsor: I will teach you how to build your very own e-commerce website![29:30] What made you decide to go vegan? We are saving all of these animals, we love all of these animals, how can we do that and then eat another one?I can't tell you enough that a plant-based diet is where it's at.[32:10] Talk about Wild Again...Every animal here has a story.[35:10] Is your tiny house permanence or mobile?[36:10] What inspires you?People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing, that's why we recommend it daily. -Zig ZiglarDo it, and then you will feel motivated to do it. —Zig ZiglarFor me, being involved with so many different things does keep me on my toes, it does keep me sharp, and it does keep me motivated.[37:05] Any skills every entrepreneur, or most people in general, should have?I like to be honorable. My word is extremely important to me.Just because you hear that someone else can do it that way doesn't mean that you should do it that way or that you can do it that way.You shouldn't engage in any deal if it isn't beneficial to both parties.[40:40] Is hustle or ambition more important than talent? If you're someone like myself (who doesn't consider himself naturally gifted or talented at anything) who has had to work as hard as you possibly could for the things that you have and the things that you've done, that's when hustle is extremely important. Because without it, you're not moving, you're at a standstill.Know how to sell yourself at all times and to preserve your self image. That's why your word is so important, because in the end, that's all you have.I do believe that if you surround yourself with the things that you want to be attracted to you, things just inevitably end up working out that way. And it's not magic, it's just the power of networking.I think if you don't find balance in your life, you might be regretful that you missed out on things. But at the same time, you also risk looking back and being like, "Wow, I didn't do anything."If you set goals, you're already on the right path.I think that being a good person and sticking to your morals really goes a long way.If you're burned out, if you're stressed out, and if you're tired all the time, you're not gonna perform. No one can tell you that you're right or wrong about what you actually want out of life.[48:05] You have a normal job, do you ever think of just doing your own thing? Explain vision boards...One of the pieces on my vision board says "working for myself by 2016." I set that about 2.5 years ago. And the absolutely, wildly terrifying thing is that I think that could happen next year. That definitely scares the hell out of me in a good way.I've always had all these side brands but they were safe because I had my 9-5. Stepping out of that comfort zone, ya, that's a scary thing.Without a doubt, I think that just seeing those goals in front of you when you wake up and when you go to sleep are powerful. And it's not magic, it's just literally seeing your goals everyday and that's a simple reminder of what you're working towards. Ask yourself, "Have I done anything today to work towards that goal?" And if you say no, well, there's your motivation right there as soon as you get out of bed.[52:15] How important is it to have a significant other with the same goals? Many people spend more time in planning the wedding than they do in planning the marriage. -Zig ZiglarYour significant other is your rock, your foundation. In my situation, ya I'm extremely lucky, but I wouldn't say luck. That's your selection process.Find someone who does coordinate with you.A relationship could make or break your dream.Show Sponsor: Try ShipStation completely FREE for 30 Days![57:25] Do you still have fears? It's really important to do the things instead of wondering what would happen if you would have done them. It's better to at least do it wrong and learn from that. When you hear how many people welcome mistakes and failures, we're like, "Ya, I'm totally on board!" But on the inside, we're like, "I don't want to fail. I'm terrified of failing." You still have this fear of making mistakes or looking bad, especially now with how vulnerable we are through social media.Your morals and your ethics will really show what kind of person you are when you fail or when you make a mistake.[1:00:30] How has social media played a role in what you do?[1:02:30] Have you ever had a mentor or coach? If there's someone in a position that you want to be in, study their life.[1:04:50] What is a big risk that you've taken?I think one of the risky things was choosing not to go to college and be self-taught.If you're in a spot for a long time and you feel yourself getting stagnant, it's time to go. Even if you've been there for 8 years and you're in a good spot, you're risking your career. Don't burn out.Move on before it's too late. And it's not only for your sake, but don't hurt the brand that you're associated with too. If you're comfortable and feel like you're on auto-pilot everyday and things are easy and you're almost bored, it's time to move on.[1:08:00] If you could recommend one book, what would it be?The Magic of Believing by Claude M. BristolTaking care of yourself regardless of your dietary choice is probably one of the most important things you could do in life period.[1:12:35] What do you wish you knew more about before starting the tiny house project?[1:14:50] Any specific moments that stand out on that journey?I really just wanted to pay it forward and do the same for people who have the same goal of trying to live with less and just be simpler. Not forgetting why you started the whole journey is pretty important.[1:18:10] What would you say to someone thinking about going down the tiny house path?I do still find myself tempted to look at these big mansions, but to not get confused with having that house and having success.[1:20:35] What does stories over stuff mean to you?I'm definitely not regretful that I did this now in life because i think that everything happens for a reason.[1:22:45] When you hear risk without regret, what comes to mind?Bet on your strengths and don't give a fuck about your weaknesses. -Gary VaynerchukKeep moving forward. Take those risks. As long as you don't die, don't regret it."Risk Without Regret" really resonated well with me. It made me smile for a few minutes just thinking about all the risks I've taken.I would suggest the same to everybody else, to not be afraid and to just go for it."What if's" will go to the grave with you.Connect with Trevor:Instagram: @trevorgayFacebook: facebook.com/trevorgayTwitter: @trevorgayConnect with Heart Of It All House:Website: heartofitallhouse.comInstagram: @heartofitallhouseFacebook: facebook.com/heartofitallhouseThis episode is brought to you by:Create Your Online Shop - In episode 9 of the podcast, I talk about my new web design course I've been working on. RWR-012: Eric Zimmer Goes From Drug Addiction to Fortune 500 Consulting

On this episode, Eric Zimmer explains how he has always had the entrepreneur mindset. From a paperboy to owning a small landscaping company to working in various small startups to starting his own companies and so much more. But all that could have been cut short as he developed a nasty drug problem early on. Luckily for him, he was able to kick that habit and create a lot of success for himself! At the beginning of 2014, he launched The One You Feed Podcast, and by the end of the year, he was voted one of the Best of iTunes Podcasts of 2014. But it doesn't stop there, he also does e-commerce consulting for large businesses on huge projects.I'm excited to share this story with you today, I think you're really gonna find it motivating and relatable! So without further ado, here's Eric...Subscribe to the podcast!Show notes:[00:45] Tell us a bit about yourself...[02:40] Did you go to college for computer programming?[05:00] Unqualified but did it anywayWhen you're starting a company, you have to build what you can with what you have.[06:00] Where do you live?[06:45] How were you able to get sober?I hit a point where I just had no idea what else to do. No idea of the next step, so I checked myself into treatment. Something happened in that period where I started to get a little bit of hope, that maybe I could live a different way. So I threw myself into that pretty hard, and that was really all I was focused on for at least a year and a half.[07:40] Did family or friends or a mentor help you get through all of this?[08:00] Tell us about your award-winning podcast...An old grandfather told his grandson, "My son, there is a battle between two wolves inside us all. One is evil. It is anger, jealousy, greed, and resentment. The other is good. It is joy, love, hope, humility, kindness, empathy, and bravery." The boy thought about it, and asked, "Grandfather, which wolf wins?" The old man quietly replied, "The one you feed."[09:30] What type of guests do you have on your show?I interview anyone that I find interesting, who I think has something useful to say about how do we make good decisions. What do we think about and where do we spend our time, and that totally determines the quality of our life. And the show is focused on how can we do that better.I didn't start the podcast to necessarily be a business. It would be good for me and i get to spend more time with my best friend. The fact that it blew up isn't the primary focus of why I'm doing it. It really started as a hobby more than anything else.[11:40] What did you think of the Best of iTunes award?[12:30] Talk about the solar energy biz you started...The idea came from something I got interested in, I tend to follow my curiosity. I was at the library browsing around and saw a book on clean energy. I thought there was a great opportunity there and I thought that kind of work was really important.I just hit a point where I didn't see the path forward from here, that I didn't think this was going to make me happy. So I just decided to change directions. What's the point of owning your own company and doing your own thing if you're not enjoying it anymore?[17:40] Started a non-profit at age 16...It started when I just wanted to take some kids to the zoo, and it turned into something more. But my transition out of it was hastened by my problems with alcohol and drugs. So I sort of helped to kill that. That's certainly one of the regrets I have.[19:20] Have you always had the entrepreneur mind?If you can find someone who has a lot of credibility who will take you seriously, then to some degree you can leverage that credibility.I think you're always projecting an image or you're selling something that's a little bit beyond where you are. There ends up being a gap between what you're out there selling and what you're capable of at that exact moment. The key is that you don't let that gap get too big that you can't jump it when you have to.[23:15] Did you start the solar company right after you got sober?[24:00] As the solar company was being put on hold, is that when you got into the e-commerce stuff? There are ways at any juncture along your career that you can take risks and not expose yourself to complete ruin.[26:40] How old are you? Is age a factor? There are ways to do your own thing and make your life different than what it is. There's a middle ground between staying at something you hate doing and quitting everything to chase what you want. There's a lot of play between those two things that people can do, and those options don't seem to be talked about a lot.[28:50] Do you think a regular job is secure?I don't see working for a big company as job security. Having skills that I know I can apply in a lot of different places and continuing to have connections, I see that as job security. I'm confident I can go find some way to make money with the skill set I have. I have no faith that Fortune 100 company "X" is any safer than being out on your own.Show Sponsor: Try ShipStation completely FREE for 30 Days![34:25] Your e-commerce biz doesn't have a name?[37:30] How important is networking?[38:40] What is more stressful, the larger or smaller projects?[40:25] Tell us about the coaching and public speaking that you do...[41:45] People come to you, you don't have to sell yourself as hard anymore...[42:35] Do you travel much or is Columbus good for what you do?[45:45] How did you meet Lewis Howes?[47:05] What do you wish you knew before starting a biz?A skill worth investing in is learning how to learn things.[51:45] If you could only read one book, what would you recommend? The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change[52:40] What have you given up to start a biz? There are definitely sacrifices. I think anybody that says there are not is probably not being honest, or is not real successful.[55:35] Some people feel like they are stuck in what they have chosen for their life. What are your thoughts?[56:35] Any daily rituals? The president exercises probably nearly everyday, I cannot, with a straight face, say that I'm busier than him or that the stuff I have to do is more important.Try replacing "I don't have time for that." with "I'm not prioritizing that right now." And once you do that, you really are making choices about your time.If you want a different life, you make different choices.I'm amazed at what I'm able to get done when I'm that laser-focused.I think I've kinda become one of those people that a lot of people look at and go, "How on earth do you do that?" And I think you have to know how to work smart to do that.We only have 24 hours, I can't manufacture any more. I have to think and be as disciplined as I can at what I spend my time on. And, while I'm spending that time, that I am using it well.Show Sponsor: I will teach you how to build your very own e-commerce website![01:05:25] Doing whatever you want to do everyday is harder than it seems...The people that have nothing that they have to do or don't have any set schedule, they find it the hardest to be productive. Those are the people that tend to get the least amount done because there's just no structure of any sort, and it's just really hard to function in that.A wandering mind is an unhappy mind.[01:07:45] Who motivates and inspires you? Favorite interview you've done? Favorite quote?A lot of times for me, inspiration, or feeling better when I'm down, comes from listening to loud music more than reading somebody's blog post.I think that changing our ratio of what we create versus what we consume is a really great thing. I think a lot of us, we just consume and consume and consume. I found that I get a lot more out of slowing way down, consuming less, and actually learning it then applying it.Start where you are, use what you have, do what you can. -Arthur AsheThere is no substitute for starting the work. Plan the best you can, but just start. If you have an idea, go find a customer and see if anybody would ever actually even want that thing.[01:16:00] What is one moment that really makes you proud to do what you do?[01:18:05] How does social media affect what you do?[01:19:50] What skills should every entrepreneur have? One way to not have regret about risks is learn how to take small risks, and do those often. Learn to take a risk and try, versus just thinking about it.The old saying goes, "Ready. Aim. Fire." But I think a lot of entrepreneurs are a lot more like, "Ready. Fire. Aim."I'm taking a risk, but I've got a lot of good information here telling me that this is a smart risk to take.[01:22:45] What's a big risk you've taken? The other way to take risks is if you get to the other side of it, are you gonna know a whole lot more than you know now? And is that going to make you valuable in other ways?[01:25:50] Any cool companies that have caught your attention lately?[01:28:30] Is that popular advice that you don't 100% agree with?[01:30:45] Are you the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with?[01:33:55] What are you working on next?I think behavioral change has a lot to do with how you structure your life and the environment. There's a lot of studies, a lot of science, and a lot of best practice in trying to change habits that I just think most of us don't ever know.[01:36:10] Best way to contact you...Connect with Eric:Twitter: @OneYouFeedThe One You Feed Podcast: oneyoufeed.netPersonal Website: about.me/erictzimmerThis episode is brought to you by:ShipStation - I've only been using this shipping software for about 2-3 months, but I know I'll be using it for a long time.
