After a brief tribute to Gilbert Gottfried Marc Abbott Denise Tapscott Kirk A Johnson and Steven Van Patten begin to tear into Moon Knight and a few other tidbits of nerd-dom! You don't want to miss this under any circumstances, especially if you are looking for a laugh and maybe a tear or two.
Kirk A Johnson wasn't feeling good (pray for a brother) so it was just Marc Abbott Denise Tapscott and Steven Van Patten trying to figure out what the hell happened at the Oscars AND why all of a sudden New York's mayor seems more concerned with the Brooklyn Net's scoreboard than COVID. Of course, without Kirk present and with the team having mistakenly fallen for the fake Chris Rock letter, we may very well have to circle back to the 'Slap Heard Around The World'. In the meantime, please enjoy!
his week, Denise Tapscott, Marc Abbott, Kirk A Johnson, and Steven Van Patten put the nerd stuff aside and talk about the current wishy-washy way local and federal politicians are rolling back COVID restrictions and our reservations about it. We also discuss how even though we are dead set against Russia's attack on Ukraine, we are also pretty appalled at the racism at the Ukraine border. Also, along with www.speculativefictionacademy.com, we figured tonight would be a great night to remind you of the following websites and maybe help support this podcast since it is your favorite and all!
Jasper and Terence are first joined by author Steven Van Patten (www.laughingblackvampire.com) to discuss book censorship, which resulted in a very spirited conversation about the hypocrisy and general nonsensical logic behind this "movement." In the second half of the show, they move to the PIPES Act. What is it? Why would this happen? And of course, the discussion has to take a turn to discuss this country's history of discrepancies in the grace dispensed to some groups of addicts and not others.
Denise Tapscott joins the team to announce that she is officially ON THE TEAM! Expect to see Denise with Marc Abbott Kirk A Johnson and Steven Van Patten in every episode moving forward. (Pending work and family emergencies of course.) Discussions Include: Why is there an armored racist in 'The Peacemaker' during Black History Month, props to President Zelensky, (recorded before we found out Black people aren't being allowed to evacuate safely from the war zone or that would have been handled), and a great game to send of Black History Month 2022. And no, it's not Name That Racist, but you might learn something anyway. We're having fun dammit! Join us!

"Listen to them, the children of the night. What music they make." - Bram Stoker The Buzzards go goth on this episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ, as we speak with acclaimed horror author Steven Van Patten and talk about all things vampires, werewolves and the shape of horror to come. Van Patten is the author of the trilogy Brookwater's Curse - Volume1, Volume 2 and Volume 3: Extinction Agenda - about a former Georgian plantation slave named Christian Brookwater who becomes a powerful vampire. He becomes an agent for a secret vampire law enforcement who has to keep those damn werewolves in check among other supernatural creatures of mayhem. Brookwater also can't seem to curb his murderous impulses when confronted by obnoxious racists, much to his agency's chagrin. The hero's journey continues as vampire politics, civil war and love triangles abound. Van Patten has also written a two-book series, Killer Genius: She Kills Because She Cares and Killer Genius 2: Attack of the Gym Rats, about a woman named, appropriately enough, Kendra the Killer Genius. She is a super intelligent serial killer with a conscience and only kills those she conceives to be racist, sexist, abusive or dangerously criminal. In the sequel she takes on sexual predators and the Russian mob. He also wrote a children's novel called Rudy's Night Out about a young boy who sneaks out at night to a party and discovers a scary world out there. Will his father - a man with a secret and the last name Brookwater...hmmm - find him in time?! You'll just have to read it to find out for yourself! He is also a co-author of two anthology series - Hell at the Way Station and Hell at Brooklyn Tea. The former he co-wrote with acclaimed author Marc L. Abbott and the latter with Abbott and Kirk Johnson. They are stories of horror centered around Brooklyn, where Van Patten grew up, and a framing device includes the authors themselves as participants in the supernatural shenanigans. Hell at the Way Station won two African-American Literary Awards including Best Anthology and Best in Science Fiction. Van Patten also won an award for Best Independent Publisher for his Laughing Black Vampire Productions publishing company. Van Patten is a member of the New York Chapter of the Horror Writers Association as well as a member of the Directors Guild of America (DGA). In his spare time he has done some stage managing for several television shows. He also wrote some television episodes for a series called "Viral Vignettes." The Buzzards get all nerded out with Mr. Van Patten as they talk about his books, his publishing company, his fascination with horror, horror movies and the mighty borough of Brooklyn. So, concoct your elixir of absinthe with a sugar cube and some water, turn out the lights and get ready to be thoroughly entranced by the new prince of darkness. The Buzzards get eerie with Steven Van Patten. Please remember to subscribe to us on YouTube, iTunes or Spotify for all future and old episodes. If you have any questions, comments, ideas or potential guests for us, please email us at FIVEDOLLARBUZZ@gmail.com. We might have to wait until dark as the sun doesn't seem to favor our pasty complexions.

On This Episode Of The Beautiful Butterfly Radio Show we Bring you " Author's Spotlight WIth " Author Steven Van Patten of The Brookwater's Curse Series. Meet Our Guest: Steven Van Patten is a Brooklyn native, raised in Fort Greene. After graduating from Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus on a full scholarship, he pursued a career in television production. When he's not writing scary stories, he can be found stage managing various TV shows in the New York area. As a child, Steven couldn't help but notice a lack of cultural diversity in the horror and sci-fi movies that he otherwise loved. There was also little character development where people of color were concerned. After being disappointed time and time again, Steven decided to bring his own visions to life. As an adult, he studied over historical research night after night, and traveled to various locales around the globe in order to give his stories a proper sense of worldliness. The end result is the Brookwater's Curse series, three (soon to be four) novels focused on the odyssey of Christian Brookwater, an 1860s Georgia plantation slave who becomes a monster-slaying vampire residing in modern day New York.
Steven Van Patten is a native New Yorker, raised in Fort Greene and currently living in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. ‘SVP' describes himself as an insomniac with an overactive imagination and a lover of things that go bump in the night. He's quoted as saying that, “I love horror movies, but I am not always crazy about how people of color are depicted or handled within the horror genre. My list of complaints goes on forever, from the stereotypical slang-talker who is dead before the credits are over to the fact that Blade goes for an entire trilogy of movies without the main character attaining a true love interest.” This is probably why after coming home from his exhausting experiences stage managing various TV shows throughout the New York area, he was motivated to stay up all hours of the night writing the Brookwater's Curse vampire novel series. Because of his extensive work in both the television and literary fields, he's now a member of both the Director's Guild of America and The Horror Writer's Association. The Brookwater's Curse books are a combination of many things the author loves, all pulled together to create a very dark, very adult, supernatural vision. He is currently working on, “The Genius” a somewhat futuristic, multi-cultural take on the serial killer genre.
