This week Alexis and Suzanne cover Season 5 Episode 5, "We Got Us A Pippi Virgin." They both agree it is possibly their least favorite episode and Suzanne really questions the choice of a Bop-It game as a peacemaking effort. Alexis appreciates the movement between Richard and Emily, even though it is still painful to see them separated. The question remains, is it better to be on a double date with Rune or Dean and Luke? But we had AMAZING news with this morning's BIG CONCERT ANNOUNCEMENT!! Morgan may have started a gang war with another morning radio show. Bill has a date night with Paula this weekend but they want to do two very different things. We attempted to play "Bop It" again this morning for Kidz Bop tickets, but for the 2nd day in a row, it was a MASSIVE fail!! The Browns had a major concert announcement yesterday, but Bill noticed that the response on social media has been less than ideal. From Cock Ring Ken and his buddy™️ Allan to the fabulous rainbow manes of the genderless Troll dolls, queerness is woven throughout the shiny plastics of all our most iconic childhood toys. This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with TikTok and Instagram influencer Connor Clary (@connor.clary) to chat about all of the gayest toys from our childhoods. Whether you were aware of your queerness as a child or not, it's likely that you interacted with your toys in ways that would have literally everyone highkey questioning your sexuality nowadays. And regardless of what your orientation is now, if you owned Barbies, you were absolutely scissoring them together any chance you got. Honestly that's on Mattel for making Barbies so damn good at scissoring! But it is not just how we played with our toys that makes them scream homosexual. It's truly just that the toys themselves are giving gay. Barbie was queer from the jump, arriving on the toy scene with one agenda in mind, to shake up the status quo for little girls. From their lack of genitals to their impressive scissoring skills, it's a real wonder that anyone ever thought they were straight! Then of course there is Barbie's beloved beard, Ken. There have been a lot of iterations of Ken, but there are perhaps none more gay than Earring Magic Ken and Sugar Daddy Ken. In fact, Earring Magic Ken (lovingly known as Cock Ring Ken by gay men everywhere) was so visibly queer that Dan Savage published an article about him titled Ken Comes Out, sending Mattel into a panic and causing them to discontinue the doll. Beyond Barbie, several other childhood favorites made our gayest toy lists including Bop It! (literally a handjob training machine), The Game of Life (you can put two little pink figures into the front of the car, no one is going to stop you), the Furby (essentially what the Babadook would keep as a pet), and Troll dolls (genderless slightly unsettling very naked rainbow creatures). We also bust out some deep cuts, looking into the inherent queerness of Pogs and Slap Bracelets (if you remember these, go take an Advil for your back). We know one thing for sure, our childhood toys Should've Been Gay. Follow us on the platform formerly known as Twitter: Lez Hang Out (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay questions at the end of every episode. You can also join us on Facebook.com/lezhangoutpod and Instagram (@lezhangoutpod). Find us individually on Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok at Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida). The Power of Recyclable Innovation: "Keep your old workaround, recycle some things, use it as a springboard for building on top of cannibalized parts of it for new things, because there's no sense in trying to always reinvent something from scratch, especially when you've put a lot of work and effort into something." — Mike Brennan I had the incredible opportunity to visit Dan Klitsner's studio in downtown San Francisco recently, and it was an experience I won't soon forget! As the host of the Creative Chats Podcast, I get to connect with amazing artists, makers, and creators, and Dan has been one of those incredible individuals. Here are 3 key takeaways from my visit to Dan Klitsner's studio: 1️⃣ The power of hands-on interaction: Seeing Dan's inventions and creations up close was truly magical. It reminded me of the importance of getting our work into the hands of others and creating experiences that go beyond visual appeal. For artists, makers, and creators, this serves as a reminder to focus on creating experiences that truly engage and captivate our audiences. 2️⃣ Behind-the-scenes inspiration: Exploring the cabinets filled with prototypes and past ideas that didn't make it to market was eye-opening. It highlighted the iterative nature of the creative process and reminded me that failure is not an endpoint, but rather a stepping stone toward success. Don't be afraid to embrace experimentation and learn from every experience along the way! 3️⃣ Endless possibilities: Dan's studio was a testament to the boundless potential of creativity. The variety of products and ideas showcased the endless possibilities that come with embracing your imagination and pushing the boundaries of what's possible. It inspired me to keep pushing the limits of my own creativity and explore new ideas and avenues. Thank you, Dan Klitsner, for your hospitality and for inviting us into your inspiring studio! And as always, if you haven't already, be sure to check out the Creative Chats Podcast for more interviews and stories from incredible creatives. Listen to Dan on Creative Chats episode 131! We are back for another great interview on our podcast on how to unlock your world of creativity. Our guest today is Dan Klitsner. He joins us on our around the world journey where we talk to creative practitioners about how they get inspired and how they organize and pitch those ideas, and also how they gain the confidence and the connections to launch their work out into the world. Dan is the founder and creative director of toy inventing and licensing firm KID Group LLC. He is also the inventor of the iconic Bop It, a wildly successful children's toy that has sold over 30+ million units since 1996. He is also a recipient of 2 gold IDEA awards and 4 Toy of the Year Awards. He also co-founded QiGo Inc., which utilizes USB Key technology to support child-safe internet connections for toys. We talk about the Art of the pitch seeing as Dan has been on both sides of the table. He has done several pitches for several toys and has served as a judge in many design and innovation competitions as well, including the IDSA international design competition, the Consumer Electronics Show, and the Toy of the Year Awards. He also teaches classes in design and invention at the California College of Arts, San Francisco State, and the San Francisco Academy of Art. We also hear about “Bop it for Good” which is Dan's latest project, taking the success of the Bop It and turning it into a force for change for the underserved communities and especially children. Through the Bop It for Good program, 100% of his profits through the website will go to Boys and Girls Clubs in underserved areas to provide assistance and programs to children. This is in recognition of the 25th anniversary of the Bop It. His top tips on the art of pitching are: Remember that Pitching, in general, is so fun especially If you are an idea person. It is very important how you choose to pitch, depending on the idea. Because there isn't just one way to pitch ideas. There are many ideas and you have to figure out what is a compelling way to get people, to love your idea. Knowing your audience is the most important thing before you pitch. The secret to a great pitch is to make sure to keep it loose. In conclusion, Dan walks us through the creative process that goes into making and designing the products that are around for generations. And also he explains the exact process of going from an idea to licensing it, patenting it and bringing it to market, and selling millions of units.
