Do you confuse spiritual confidence with self-confidence? Welcome to the Daily Devo. I am Vince Miller. This week, we are in 1 Samuel 17. I've titled this chapter "Battling Giants." We have the battle scene. In today's text, David approaches the King before running to the battle. Let's read 31-40: When the words that David spoke were heard, they repeated them before Saul, and he sent for him. And David said to Saul, "Let no man's heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and fight with this Philistine." And Saul said to David, "You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him, for you are but a youth, and he has been a man of war from his youth." But David said to Saul, "Your servant used to keep sheep for his father. And when there came a lion, or a bear, and took a lamb from the flock, I went after him and struck him and delivered it out of his mouth. And if he arose against me, I caught him by his beard and struck him and killed him. Your servant has struck down both lions and bears, and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living God." And David said, "The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine." And Saul said to David, "Go, and the Lord be with you!" Then Saul clothed David with his armor. He put a helmet of bronze on his head and clothed him with a coat of mail, and David strapped his sword over his armor. And he tried in vain to go, for he had not tested them. Then David said to Saul, "I cannot go with these, for I have not tested them." So David put them off. Then he took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones from the brook and put them in his shepherd's pouch. His sling was in his hand, and he approached the Philistine. — 1 Samuel 17:31-40 Three features of David's approach in this text: One | God's Man Is Bold But Humble. David's boldness is striking. He is a 15-year-old boy who steps into the octagon to fight a UFC champion in hand-to-hand combat. And he is confident that God will deliver him. But his courage should not be confused with secular understandings of "self-confidence." Never wrongly correlate David's confidence with "self-confidence" because that is not what this is. David's confidence is not born from himself. It was born from faith and assurance in God and God's power. You'll notice here that David doesn't boast about his strength or abilities. Instead, he merely recounts his past victories over similar opponents like Goliath, attributing his success to God. This blend of boldness and humility is what believers need. We should not be overly inactive, camouflaged in meekness, or not excessively active, presented in arrogance. We have to find the right blend of boldness and humility; in this instance, David gets this right. Two | God Did It, Then. He'll Do It Now. David's spiritual confidence is rooted in his past experiences with God. For David, this moment is a continuance of the work of God through him. He believes that what God did back in the fields with the sheep, he will do on the war field with sheepish people. Most of us fail to remember this. And there is a reason why. When God delivers us in the past, we fail to see it as God's victory; therefore, in the present, we put unrealistic pressure on ourselves and fail to act. You have to stop seeing past victories as your victories if they were God's victories. If you don't, you will never have the strength for the present battle and the victory that God wants you to know. Three | God's Logic Defies Human Logic. The way David approaches the battle defies conventional logic. Instead of sporting Saul's armor and carrying his sword, which would have been standard for a battle like this, David opts for his familiar sling and a few stones. His choice may seem irrational from a human perspective, but it highlights a key feature of David's faith: faith in God results in responses that sometimes defy human logic. While it may look humanly irrational, it is spiritually rational. When bold faith is required, we have to go back to what God has done before, and we must use the same tools of faith again in what appears to be a slightly different situation. And this will bother some people because, to onlookers, it may look illogical, but we all know it's perfectly logical. Three features of David's approach: He behaved bold but humble. He believed God did it then and would do it now. He believed God's logic defies human logic. So, the question I will leave you with today is: What do you need to change in your approach to today's challenges? Note: Spiritual confidence is not self-confidence. #FaithOverFear, #BoldAndHumble, #DivineVictory

Sean will be the first to say that he generally speaks of lessons learned from his father-both good and bad. Sharing his story on SHLTMM  was a great opportunity for him to share all the attributes of his mother, Linda. With Sean's dad already living in Germany, Linda had to work full time to support she and her son. By the age of  nine, Sean's parent's divorced, yet thought it a good idea for all to move to Germany together. Living check by check was risking but allowed the trio to have wonderful get-aways, taking Sean out of school and traveling all over Europe. His mom's feeling was that her son was going to learn way  more by traveling  country to country and seeing all of Europe rather than sitting in a classroom.Linda was an artist. She was passionate about photography and painting, painting flowers in particular.  Unfortunately, she wasn't comfortable sharing her works, possibly because of fear of criticism or judgement. Or perhaps she painted to make herself happy and didn't need to have anyone else see it . Linda was diligent about her craft. She traveled to Paris and visited  all the finest museums and studied what interested her most, then went home and painted. Unfortunately, Sean shares details of a tragic end to his mother's treasures.Linda and Sean's dad met when Linda was a senior in high school and his father, a photographer for a local newspaper after returning from  serving in Vietnam. The young couple had a terrible time trying to conceive a child yet while at a revival retreat in Mexico, the minister told Linda that she was in fact pregnant and pregnant with "a very special child."  And that "God has great plans for this child."  So imagine Sean's mom sharing this story with her son on a regular basis, so Sean clearly felt that he was destined to accomplish great things. Sean shares stories of doubt while engaged in combat in Iraq where he felt he was going to die, yet felt deep down that "I  don't think I've fulfilled what God has for me yet," and carried on through combat. Sean thanks his mother for constantly reinforcing  that he's capable of doing anything he wants in life, if he sets his mind to it. Whether we are moving through physical deaths, financial deaths, spiritual deaths, mental deaths or outdated belief system deaths we are ALL letting go of something at this time. As we let go we make space for the new energy of what's next to show up. However, sometimes at the 'end' of this letting go process we go through some of the most interesting of times in our spiritual awakening. I know this is true for me so how true is it for you? I share some of my personal story about how I am ending this next level of my letting go process and I also share how amused I am by what is showing up in my world to show that I am ready to be 'chased' or 'pursued' by the intentional 'things' I have built over the last several years. 5 Signs.. Is Your Husband Depressed? Let's talk about the complexities of depression in a relationship.  You might be wondering, what does it mean for a person to be depressed, and is it possible to be depressed without it being clinical in nature? Depression is like a raincloud that refuses to part.  It's more than just feeling sad; it's a persistent, deep-seated darkness that affects a person's thoughts, feelings, and daily life.  Now, can someone be depressed without it being clinical? Absolutely. Absolutely.  But understanding depression should equip you to be a supportive partner. It's not about being on the edge, but rather standing beside your loved one, ready to lend a hand. Let's discuss some 3 first signs of 5 that would more appropriately point to depression in your husband. Sign Number 1: Changes in Mood When it comes to changes in mood, keep an eye out for persistent shifts in emotional states. Depression often brings about intense feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or irritability.  Your husband may seem more easily frustrated, even over minor issues. The key is the persistence of these mood changes; we all have off days, but if this becomes the new norm, it's time to take notice. Now, how does this correlate with relationship struggles? Well, imagine navigating the unpredictable waters of someone's fluctuating moods. It can create an emotional distance between partners, making communication challenging.  Understanding that these mood changes might be linked to depression should allow a partner with the knowledge to approach the other with empathy rather than frustration. Sign Number 2: Changes in Sleep Patterns Depression has a way of disrupting the delicate balance of sleep. Pay attention if your husband experiences significant changes in his sleep patterns.  This could manifest as insomnia, difficulty falling asleep, or conversely, excessive sleep. Sleep is a cornerstone of physical and mental well-being, and disruptions can have a ripple effect on all aspects of life. How does this tie into relationship struggles? Imagine the impact of sleep deprivation on daily interactions. Fatigue can heighten irritability and decrease patience, potentially leading to conflicts within the relationship.  By addressing sleep pattern changes, you're not just addressing a symptom but proactively managing a factor that could contribute to relationship strain. Sign Number 3: Withdrawal from Activities A once social and active husband suddenly withdrawing from activities he used to enjoy? That's a significant red flag.  Depression often convinces individuals to isolate themselves, creating a barrier even with activities they once found pleasure in. It's not just about physical withdrawal; there's an emotional distance that comes with it. Now, let's connect the dots to relationship struggles. Imagine planning outings or activities together, only to be met with disinterest or reluctance.  The withdrawal can extend to emotional availability, making it challenging to connect on a deeper level. Recognizing this sign is crucial for partners to work together in reintroducing enjoyable activities and rebuilding emotional bonds. What about signs that you might be seeing but not necessarily indicative of depression; at least that we can't conclude to be clinical in nature. Well it might be a clinical condition to not hit the like, share and subscribe buttons immediately as it will lead to not getting notified when we drop the next video… DO IT NOW! SIGN NUMBER 4: Disconnects Feeling a disconnect between your husband's depression and relationship struggles? Feeling a disconnect from your husband? Focus on understanding the symptoms before jumping to conclusions. A proper diagnosis is the foundation for effective treatment. SIGN NUMBER 5: Pushing Away Why would a wife link her husband pushing her away to the possibility of depression?  Well, sometimes depression manifests as a desire for isolation. It's not a blame game; it's about recognizing patterns and seeking understanding. So you are thinking "My husband is depressed and won't get help." What should you do? If you find yourself in this situation, the source of this diagnostic conclusion is first to be assessed.  Encourage open communication, express your concern, and help him understand the benefits of seeking professional help. But remember, it's a journey, not a sprint. The emphasis should be on supporting him in seeking professional help. Beyond being a pillar of support, recognizing when it's not a relational issue is crucial. And No! Constant anger isn't a definitive sign, but it could be an expression of underlying emotional turmoil. Depression? Is He Running Mad? I wanted to address this because of certain cultures that tend to gravitate away from what is scientifically proven.  Closed mindedness only make matters like this worse than it needs to be Running mad is probably a stretch, but genuine concern is valid. Mental health matters, and addressing it early can make all the difference.  But here's the thing – don't jump to conclusions. Clearly, you are seeking a solution and that's a great place to start from.  But refrain from self-diagnosis which may include psycho-analyzing your husband.  Balancing mental health awareness with refraining from self-diagnosis is crucial for maintaining a healthy relationship. Instead of attempting to psycho-analyze your husband, focus on fostering open communication.  Encourage dialogue about emotions and well-being without assuming the role of a mental health professional. Seek information together, emphasizing that understanding mental health is a shared journey.  If concerns arise, consider professional advice to ensure accurate assessments and appropriate support. Remember, communication, empathy, and seeking guidance when needed contribute to a supportive environment without the pitfalls of self-diagnosis. What About Post-Baby Blues? Yes, the challenges of parenthood can amplify stressors, contributing to or exacerbating depression. It's a delicate dance of responsibilities and emotions. In Conclusion Suspicion of depression is an additional layer of concern. Seek help for the actual symptoms, not unfounded diagnoses.  Your relationship is a partnership, and navigating mental health challenges together can strengthen that bond as long as things are being approached from a place as close as possible to empathy Remember, your journey through depression in a relationship is unique, and professional guidance to address issues with respect to your particular story is key and can make all the difference. 100% of the things you do now get done, which is why you should practice a Do It Now strategy. a) Create a repository – Have a place where you can organize and plan tasks that you are unable to do right now. This document, folder, or list is something that should be reviewed and updated daily. b) Focus and refocus – Treat focusing and re-focusing like two separate muscles that need to be exercised. Give tasks your full intention when working on them and practice refocusing when switching from one task to another. c) Try not to use deadlines – Telling yourself “X needs to be done by X time” creates resistance for you in accomplishing the task. Dedicate a minimum amount of time to the task each day (as needed) until it is done. Remember that prioritization is the antidote for procrastination.
