Sally Cousins is an accomplished FEI 5* international event rider and was the USEA Leading Lady Rider for six consecutive years (2008–2013). She began riding as a young child after her family purchased a farm in Oxford, Pennsylvania, and quickly found her passion through Pony Club and the sport of eventing. By her mid-teens, Sally had completed her first one-star three-day event, and at just 20 years old, she traveled to England to compete at the prestigious Badminton Horse Trials. She remained in the UK that year and went on to complete the Burghley Horse Trials later that season. In addition to her riding career, Sally spent 16 years working as a stockbroker at Merrill Lynch before deciding to turn professional and commit fully to eventing. Today, she operates Sally Cousins Eventing, training horses and riders out of her bases in South Carolina and Pennsylvania. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Sarah Seltzer, author of the book The Singer Sisters. Sarah is writer in New York City where she lives with her family surrounded by books, records, CDs—and a lot of snacks. Her debut novel THE SINGER SISTERS, about a family of folk rock singers who express their conflicts, secrets, betrayals and love through music, was published by Flatiron Books in summer 2024 and was a USA Today Bestseller!   She is an editor at Lilith Magazine and has been a journalist for many big and small publications from Jezebel to the New York Times reporting on activism and culture, and writing essays, cultural criticism, and the occasional opinion piece.   In my book review, I stated The Singer Sisters by Sarah Seltzer is a women's fiction with a dash of musical historical fiction thrown in for good measure. If you love a good family saga filled with generational expectations, family secrets, addictions, mental health issues, unplanned pregnancies, adoption, abortion, sexual orientation, and mother/daughter struggles, then this is the novel for you. The key players are Judie and her sister Sylvia, folk singers who made a name in the 1960s and Emma, who is Judie's daughter and wants to make her own musical mark in the world- along with a great cast of secondary characters who give the book a beautiful flavor. Against the backdrop of a musical family, we soon become embroiled in family drama. As Emma begins her journey toward fame, she learns lessons about herself, her life, and her mother. And despite this story being about a famous family, it could be about you. It seems that all families have their love, secrets, shame, and problems! I loved the nods to famous singers from the 1960s who were trying to be the next great Dylan as well as singers from the 1990s who were angry, combat boot wearing women trying to show the world how little had changed. But mostly, I loved moving along life with a family that was just trying to make it work. Originally from Cartersville, Georgia, she got her start foxhunting and training with Cathy Stephenson, later developing under Olympic medalist Julie Richards. She earned team gold and individual bronze at the 2013 NAJYRC, was the top-placed young rider at Fair Hill CCI3* in 2015, and won the CCI3*-L at Bromont in 2018. In 2023, she claimed victory in the CCI4*-L at TerraNova with Trendy Fernhill. Jenny has been a consistent member of the USEF Eventing Pathway Program, was awarded the Wilton Fair Grant, and has represented the U.S. on European Development Tours. After three years working with Phillip Dutton, she launched Caras Eventing International. She is currently based in England and continues to compete at the highest levels of the sport. She coached the Area VI Young Riders and NAYC Eventing Team from 2017 to 2019, and currently serves on the USEA ECP Committee, the EA21 Task Force, and as a Regional Coach for the EA21 program. In recognition of her contributions to the sport, Bec was awarded the USEA Foundation's Captain Mendivil-Yucupicio Grant in 2021 and received the Mike Huber Trophy for her dedication to the next generation of riders. She is the head trainer at Arnell Sporthorses and based out of Twin Rivers Ranch. Writer and prison abolitionist Keeonna Harris shares her intimate memoir, Mainline Mama, about the formidable challenge of raising a family separated by prison walls and how we can fight back against a broken Byzantine system. Keeonna and Jason met as young teens. Only fourteen, Keeonna had never had a boyfriend before, dreamed of attending Spelman to become an obstetrician, and thought she was “grown.” Within a year she was pregnant, and Jason was in prison, convicted of a carjacking and sentenced to twenty-two years. Overnight Keeonna had become a “mainline mama,” a parent facing the impossible task of raising a child — while still growing up herself — with an incarcerated partner. Keeonna recalls her harrowing journey in Mainline Mama, from learning to overcome the exhausting difficulties of navigating the carceral system in the United States, to transforming herself into an advocate for other women like her — the predominantly Black and brown women left behind to pick up the pieces of their families and fractured lives. She offers inspiration and solace, showing how to create moments of beauty, humanity, and love in a place designed to break spirits. Mainline Mama is about creating self-love and community — crucial acts of radical resistance against a prison industrial complex that is designed to dehumanize and to separate and shut away incarcerated individuals and their loved ones from the world. Keeonna Harris is a writer, storyteller, mother of five, and prison abolitionist. She is a Ph.D. Candidate at Arizona State University finishing her dissertation Everybody Survived but Nobody Survived: Black Feminism, Motherhood, and Mass Incarceration. Her memoir, Mainline Mama draws from her experiences as a Black woman, teen mother, and twenty years of raising children with an incarcerated partner and building community in the borderlands of the prison. She is the recipient of the Ploughshares Emerging Writer Award, and her work has been nominated for a Pushcart. She has received scholarships from the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference and StoryStudio. Sarah Tomlinson is the author of the novel The Last Days of the Midnight Ramblers, available from Flatiron Books. Tomlinson, a former music journalist, has been a ghostwriter since 2008, penning more than twenty books, including five New York Times bestsellers. In 2015, she published the father-daughter memoir, Good Girl (Gallery Books).
