We have portraits of people in our galleries. But what if you're a natural science museum? How do you portray a dinosaur? We talk with Kirk Johnson, Sant Director of the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, about the ways our portrayals of dinosaurs have evolved, from sluggish and lizard-like to warm-blooded, colorful and spry. Then Matthew Carrano, curator of dinosauria, explains how the museum put T. rex into a striking new pose. The trick, he says, is to convey how cool dinosaurs were, without making them seem alien. We also tie in a couple portraits from the National Portrait Gallery's collection: an image of the first person to describe an American dinosaur, and a photograph of the first person to give them the Hollywood treatment.See the portraits we discussed:Joseph Leidy, by Frederick GutekunstSteven Spielberg, by Gregory HeislerThe Nation's T. rex, the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural HistoryAlso recommended:Visions of Lost Worlds: The Paleoart of Jay Matternes, by Matthew T. When William Temple Hornaday's exhibition of stuffed bison went on display at the Smithsonian Institution in 1888, it caused a sensation. Most visitors had never seen this majestic, hulking animal up close. And most probably thought it would be their only chance, since the bison had all but vanished from the wild. Some 140 years later, Kirk Johnson, director of the National Museum of Natural History, realized that the iconic display itself had vanished from the museum's collection. So he went on the road to see what had happened to it.In this episode, we trace the story of how the bison - or American buffalo - were driven right to the edge of extinction, severing a sacred relationship with Native people. Then we track how the species' catastrophic decline, as memorialized in a taxidermy masterpiece, gave rise to the early conservation movement that brought the bison back. With guest Rosalyn LaPier.See the artwork we discuss:William Temple Hornaday, by George Rufus BoyntonHornaday's taxidermy bison displayTheodore Roosevelt, by Peter A. Weighing in also is Cathy DeBuono, a former actress, who had a near miss with this offender and has been involved with supporting the Justice For Kristi campaign. Laura warns about the dangers of not properly assessing an offender like this who is up for parole and what she thinks should be done before that hearing. Terry talks about the cases of other women who were violently attacked by Victor Paleologus and given a slap on the wrist, which allowed him to be free to murder Kristi. Kirk talks about being in the courtroom during the trial, hearing all the witnesses and observing the jury, and the backroom machinations of the defense attorney. My guest Spencer Seim (rhymes with “time”) lives a life devoted to fishing, environmental issues, and serving people. Since he was 8 years old, Spencer has been obsessed with fly fishing. Spencer has been guiding northern New Mexico and southern Colorado for eighteen years. Eight years ago, he founded ZiaFly, a guide service that focuses on a personalized fishing experience with access to some of the best trout fisheries in the Rockies.  Spencer is also very well-versed in fly tying. He's tied flies commercially, for art, for competitions and of course, for his guided trips. Spencer's flies have been featured in The Drake magazine, New York Times, Kirk W. Johnson's book The Feather Thief, and America's Favorite Flies. Spencer has been mentioned in This American Life, Smithsonian Magazine, and Outside Magazine.  The Takeaway Life typically moves along at a fast pace for most of us. By the end of the day, activities we've been engaged in are often a murky blur in our rearview mirror. What, then, might be the payoff in slowing down, observing, and reading the environmental water, say, like a fly fisherman? And how do we give ourselves the ability to hold onto and make sense of those moments of pure serendipity? As you listen What is it that drew Spencer to the water and fly fishing? What life lessons can we take away from the fly fisherman's need to observe and immerse him or herself in the trout's environment? How did Spencer get involved in the mystery surrounding the disappearance of almost 300 rare bird skins that could be used to tie salmon flies? What is the underlying story of The Feather Thief? How does Kirk Johnson's decision to write the story rest on one of those rare moments of serendipity in life? How does Spencer distinguish himself as a guide? How does he demonstrate differentiated servant leadership? How does he view guiding as being part of a team? On Feb 15th 2003, Kristi Johnson, a bright 21 year old college student, was approached at a mall in Los Angeles by convicted rapist Victor Paleologus. She had no way of knowing he was not who he said he was, no way of knowing he had seven previous convictions and had just been granted parole. All she knew was this affable, helpful seeming man who said he was a movie producer started talking to her about the entertainment industry and offered her an opportunity to apply for a job. Kristi aspired to be part of the entertainment industry, not as an actress, but maybe in PR, maybe in other capacities, she didn't know yet, she was still learning the landscape of Hollywood but she was eager to work hard. She couldn't have known that he had hunted and attacked many women before. Paleologus targeted Kristi, lured her to an abandoned location in the Hollywood Hills, killed her and disposed of her body in a ravine. Now twenty years later, this killer is up for parole. Today we are joined by Kristi's parents, Terry Hall and Kirk Johnson who tell us of those excruciating days trying to find their missing daughter and how now they are being traumatized all over again as their daughter's murderer is up for an early parole. Longer summers and a warmer climate can create a breeding ground for ticks and mosquitoes, and help them spread diseases.       Insect-borne illnesses from ticks and mosquitoes pose a real threat to human health. Documentarian Ben Berman joined me for a chat about his new two part series on ESPN's '30 for 30: The American Gladiators Documentary'. The 'American Gladiators' was a fringe sport that was shunned by the mainstream media and embraced by the American people. Former professional athletes turned gladiators would face off weekly against contenders trying to upstage the larger than life behemoths with names like Zap, Laser, Dallas, Nitro, Gemini, Thunder, Viper, Siren, Ice and Malibu. However, what we saw on TV was only the tip of the iceberg as behind the scenes, the 'American Gladiators' origin story was not the Hollywood fantasy that co-creator, Johnny Ferraro wanted everyone to believe. Ferraro was an Elvis impersonator hoping to the turn the 'American Gladiators' into a movie about the working man turned hero...or so he claimed. Berman takes us through a two part in depth dive of who the actual creators were, why Ferraro is so secretive about his associates and co-creator, "Apache" Dan Carr was not originally allowed to speak with Berman and ESPN regarding the 30 for 30 documentary. Follow Ben German on Instagram @horse_berman and Twitter @Horse_Berman. ESPN's '30 for 30: The American Gladiators Documentary' airs May 30 and 31, 2023, on ESPN and streaming on ESPN+. Synopsis: From 1989 to 1996, American Gladiators was one of the most popular syndicated programs in television, a competition show that predated the reality TV era but used many of the same techniques to attract viewers. Every week, “amateur” contestants would go up against a cast of “professional” gladiators in a range of physical competitions, setting up David versus Goliath matchups that were popular with big television audiences but also earned considerable criticism for being “crash TV”. The show's cast and crew look back on it all, with their memories complicated by regret over what it did to many of the gladiators' lives. And as the behind-the-scenes story of the series is told, from the beginning of the film, the central, most compelling character of the story is clear: Johnny Ferraro, the creator of American Gladiators, a former Elvis impersonator from Erie, PA who came to Hollywood with a dream of putting the show on screen and ended up with a singular success. “We're very excited to finally get this story out into the world, and you can trust that it'll take you to some weird places,” said Berman. “Come for the 90's nostalgia, but stay for the Elvis impersonators, the burps, the mental torment, the murder plots, aliens, and of course the undeniable atrocity of America's dark history. And sports. It's got some sports too.” The film features original interviews with Johnny Ferraro, Deron McBee (‘Malibu'), Michael Horton (‘Gemini'), Lynn ‘Red' Williams (‘Sabre'), the late William Billy Smith (‘Thunder') and Salina Bartunek (‘Elektra'). The documentary is executive produced by ESPN Films and VICE Studios and produced by Ben Berman, Kirk Johnson, Russell Wayne Groves, Danny Gabai and Andrew Freston. This episode is the second of two conversations where host Michael Azevedo speaks with the visionaries behind the venerable science documentary series NOVA.   Michael's first conversation was with NOVA series creator Michael Ambrosino and on this episode Michael speaks with Paula Apsell, who served as NOVA executive producer for 33 years, retiring in 2019 when she was named Senior Executive Producer Emerita.   Paula Apsell began her broadcasting career right out of college at Boston's WGBH public television station when she was hired to type and distribute the stations daily program logs. Within a year she was hired at WGBH radio where she developed the award-winning children's series "The Spiders Web.”   In 1975, Apsell switched over to WGBH-TV as a production assistant for NOVA's second season. One of Apsell's first productions was NOVA "Death of a Disease" which was the first long-form documentary on the eradication of smallpox. In the late 1970s Apsell was producing documentaries on artificial intelligence and genetic engineering; topics that rarely existed in the mainstream prior to the 21st century.   Apsell was asked to take over the top post at NOVA in 1985 where she remained for the three-and-a-half decades.    Among her most notable NOVA films are "The Miracle of Life" sequel "Life's Greatest Miracle," "The Fabric of the Cosmos" with Brian Greene, and "Making North America" with Dr. Kirk Johnson. Other of Apsell's acclaimed productions are the large-screen IMAX films "Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure" and "Special Effects" which was nominated for an Academy Award®.   In addition to overseeing the NOVA franchise, Apsell taught science communication at the University of California Santa Barbara.   In October 2018, Paula Apsell received the Lifetime Achievement Emmy Award from the National Association of Television Arts and Sciences. She was the first science journalist to receive this award.   Following her departure from NOVA, Apsell became CEO of Leading Edge Productions and started producing The Resistance Project, a documentary about Jewish resistance to the Holocaust.   Making Media Now is sponsored by Filmmakers Collaborative, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting media makers from across the creative spectrum. *Missing Link: RSR hosts Fred Williams & Doug McBurney welcome RSR's resident “ape-man” expert Brodie Leitch to analyze skeletal fossils and other sundry bits surrounding the one thing the evolutionists don't have, (i.e. a theory of origins). This makes you wonder how they get away with calling their premier temple of “ape to man” evolutionary tales the “Hall of Human Origins.”  * Fake Gender Friday: Listeners remind RSR that there is a show on NPR that mimics Real Science Radio from time to time, (when they happen to mention octopi that is. Not when they're promoting the criminal mutilation and molestation of children). *Lost Generation: The negligence of the church in understanding and teaching the science of Genesis, and human origins has proven fatal to millions of kids born into nominal Christianity, but abandoned by fearful, ignorant adults to secular myths that lead straight to Hell!  *Earth to Captain Kirk: Doug tells the story of the late great pastor Bob Enyart leading his church group through the Denver Museum of Natural History's “Prehistoric Journey” exhibit, and causing the curator, “Dr.” Kirk Johnson to question his own existence. (“Captain Kirk” has since failed upward through the ranks of bureaucrats to become assistant secretary of something or other at the Smithsonian).  *Open AI Shuts Down: Fred sent ChatGPT into “Network Error” mode by asking it for "evidence against ape-man”, and then showed the stupidity of the Open AI programmers by asking it about something stupid, (i.e., human evolution).  *Sponsor the Broadcast: Join us in building a thriving ministry speaking biblical truth to a world gone mad! Click through to sponsor a year, a month, a week, (or even just one Friday) of Real Science Radio right now!  *Lucy in Disguise with Lies on…: Listen in as Brodie Leitch out-smiths the Smithsonian in his analysis of the rather extraordinary sleight of hand, (and mind) baked into the myth of “Lucy”, and other popular ape-to-man evolution stories. Australopithecus afarensis (Lucy)             *Army of < One: While anthropologists brag that the bones of AL-333 represent an “army” of hundreds of implied skeletons, a closer examination of the record proves each “specimen” is actually a bone fragment, (equal to about 1.33% of a skeleton) and not even one complete skeleton at all!             “Australopithecus afarensis” (pronounced: “Ah-strey-low-pith-eh-kus a-far-en-sis”,) was formally named in 1978 after several fossil finds in Ethiopia and Tanzania. However, fossils found as early as the 1930s (40 years prior) have been labeled as “afarensis”.  “afarensis” is best known from the following specimens:  AL 288-1   AL 288-1 (AKA “Lucy”) is arguably the most famous of the “Afarensis specimens”. It's a group of bones which were collected from a large hillside and assembled into a partial skeleton. Some evolutionists claim that the skeleton is around 40% complete, but of the 207 bones that supposedly existed, only 47 have been found, making this “skeleton” (by bone count) only 22.7% complete. (47 ÷ 207 = 22.7%) Many evolutionists claim that all the bones in the skeleton belong to a single creature or at least a single species. This idea was brought into question when it was discovered that a baboon bone had remained in the skeleton for over 40 years. (If you think that an ape-man turning out to be a conglomerate after 40 years sounds familiar, you may be on to something.)   *Out With a Roar: Hear about the metatarsal bone attributed to one of Lucy's relatives, (and said to be serious evidence of an upright walking posture), and judge for yourself if someone examining it could be mistaken, (especially if they examined it with certain presuppositions)?                              *Making ChatGPT See RED: When Fred asked ChatGPT about “apemen”, it started off OK, but then appears to have lost its temper, and stormed off into a “Network Error.”

Five Dollar Buzz
Interview with the Laughing Black Vampire: The Haunting of Steven Van Patten Episode 204

Five Dollar Buzz

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 11, 2021 73:29

"Listen to them, the children of the night. What music they make." - Bram Stoker   The Buzzards go goth on this episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ, as we speak with acclaimed horror author Steven Van Patten and talk about all things vampires, werewolves and the shape of horror to come.    Van Patten is the author of the trilogy Brookwater's Curse - Volume1, Volume 2 and Volume 3: Extinction Agenda -  about a former Georgian plantation slave named Christian Brookwater who becomes a powerful vampire. He becomes an agent for a secret vampire law enforcement who has to keep those damn werewolves in check among other supernatural creatures of mayhem. Brookwater also can't seem to curb his murderous impulses when confronted by obnoxious racists, much to his agency's chagrin. The hero's journey continues as vampire politics, civil war and love triangles abound.   Van Patten has also written a two-book series, Killer Genius: She Kills Because She Cares and Killer Genius 2: Attack of the Gym Rats, about a woman named, appropriately enough, Kendra the Killer Genius. She is a super intelligent serial killer with a conscience and only kills those she conceives to be racist, sexist, abusive or dangerously criminal. In the sequel she takes on sexual predators and the Russian mob.   He also wrote a children's novel called Rudy's Night Out about a young boy who sneaks out at night to a party and discovers a scary world out there.  Will his father - a man with a secret and the last name Brookwater...hmmm - find him in time?! You'll just have to read it to find out for yourself!   He is also a co-author of two anthology series - Hell at the Way Station and Hell at Brooklyn Tea. The former he co-wrote with acclaimed author Marc L. Abbott and the latter with Abbott and Kirk Johnson. They are stories of horror centered around Brooklyn, where Van Patten grew up, and a framing device includes the authors themselves as participants in the supernatural shenanigans.   Hell at the Way Station won two African-American Literary Awards including Best Anthology and Best in Science Fiction. Van Patten also won an award for Best Independent Publisher for his Laughing Black Vampire Productions publishing company.   Van Patten is a member of the New York Chapter of the Horror Writers Association as well as a member of the Directors Guild of America (DGA). In his spare time he has done some stage managing for several television shows. He also wrote some television episodes for a series called "Viral Vignettes."   The Buzzards get all nerded out with Mr. Van Patten as they talk about his books, his publishing company, his fascination with horror, horror movies and the mighty borough of Brooklyn.  So, concoct your elixir of absinthe with a sugar cube and some water, turn out the lights and get ready to be thoroughly entranced by the new prince of darkness. The Buzzards get eerie with Steven Van Patten.   Please remember to subscribe to us on YouTube, iTunes or Spotify for all future and old episodes.  If you have any questions, comments, ideas or potential guests for us, please email us at FIVEDOLLARBUZZ@gmail.com.
