This week, we're doing something a bit different outside of our typical interview format. This is a recap of New York Climate Week. I'll share some of my impressions and you'll hear from folks like Vice President Al Gore, California Senator Henry Stern, several friends, and fellow climate travelers. You'll hear some segments from sessions I attended and sometimes it might sound like you're actually there in a room full of people. If you hear an occasional cough or something, try to just think of it as getting closer to the experience of being there without any risk of coming home with COVID.Over 75,000 people kicked off the week by taking to the streets for the Climate March on September 17th. Over the ensuing week, thousands of people from around the world joined over 585 official Climate Week sessions and likely as many unofficial ones. I kicked off the week in a somewhat surreal way. I work for a company called NationSwell. We're an executive membership network and advisory that helps sustainability and other leaders take on bigger bets and be more successful. We were invited to bring some NationSwell members like Michael Komori, Chief Sustainability Officer of Starbucks, and joined Al Gore and other climate leaders in ringing the NASDAQ bell on Monday morning – which felt like a fitting start, as a question on everyone's minds is: “If capitalism is up for the challenge, will corporations lead the transformation needed to cut emissions?”In today's episode, we're hearing from:[1:34] Adam Lake, Climate Week NYC Lead of the Climate Group[2:34] Bonnie Gurry, Co-Founder of GreenPortfolio[5:15] Alex Wright Gladstein, Founder of Sphere[6:48] Nyla Mabro, New York Chapter of New Energy Nexus[7:18] Tom Chi, Founder of At One Ventures[8:54] Kirsten Snow Spalding, VP of the Investor Network at Ceres[10:45] Former US Vice President Al Gore[19:29] VP Al Gore on Climate TRACE[12:59] VP Al Gore on the state of climate progress[20:56] Katie Rae, CEO & Manager Partner of The Engine[22:51] Jeff Johnson, Managing Partner of Temasek[24:03] Clay Dumas, Founding Partner of Lowercarbon Capital[25:44] Clay Dumas on the unique opportunity for climate founders today[27:06] Ian Samuels, Founder & Managing Partner of New System Ventures[28:09] Colin le Duc, Founding Partner of Generation Investment Management[33:43] Dr. Vanessa Chan, Chief Commercialization Officer for the US Department of Energy and Director of the

When she moved to Paris, she started taking photos of street style and became one of the first famous street style bloggers.  [25:31] The “New York Chapter” and how it gave her more freedom and a feeling of acceptance than Paris.  [29:34] Being in the New York fever lasted about 10 years, where creativity was at the forefront, but health and nervous system balance wasn't a priority.  [31:26] It comes with a cost, but sometimes we do have to put ourselves out of balance to move our energy forward.  [37:50] Garance felt tired of what she had created, and needed a break. She moved to LA, and felt a crash of adrenal and creative burnout.  [41:50] Garance's journey of deciding not to have children, and mourning that certain vision of femininity.  [52:53] Not having a child is also a birthing moment for a woman, as she's born to herself in a different way.  [58:03] Our “aha moments” don't come quickly all the time, and wisdom and acceptance of life situations and lessons learned often come slowly.  [1:04:20] Garnace talks about some of the growths she has made over the recent decades and learning to protect her solitude.  [1:09:07] Garance's morning routine of starting her day with writing and then moving her body before lunch and a nap.  [1:15:33] The concept of the third place, and how isolation is a huge problem in our modern day society.  [1:26:06] Nitsa talks about how soil has become her latest muse.  [1:30:13] What are the non-negotiables in beauty and skincare? [1:31:45] Garance talks about starting DORÉ skin care and the brands philosophy.  [1:37:18] The definition of beauty is a personal one. Garance talks about training the eye of how she defines and sees beauty, and surrounding herself with people that have that same vision.  [1:42:04] When it comes to skincare, the French know that less is always more and it's best to keep things simple.  [1:46:04] Lunch is a big affair in Corsica, so for Garance's last meal, she would enjoy a big family feast. Dogs would be looking for scraps under the table, music would be flowing, and it would be a Mediterrean-based lunch with fish, meat, and all the fresh vegetables one can imagine.

Our guest today is the infectiously inspirational Harry Franqui-Rivera. Harry is Associate Professor of History and Coordinator of History and Global Languages at Bloomfield College in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Before landing at Bloomfield, Harry held visiting and adjunct positions at Marist College, Skidmore College, Lehman College (City University of New York), and he was a Research Associate at CENTRO - The Center for Puerto Rican Studies, Hunter College, City University of New York. Harry earned his BA in History at the Mayagüez Campus of the University of Puerto Rico, completed an MA in US Military/Diplomatic History at Temple University, then earned his PhD in History at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Harry is the author of Soldiers of the Nation: Military Service and Modern Puerto Rico, 1868-1952 (University of Nebraska Press), and he has authored numerous essays and articles, including “A New Day Has Dawned for Porto Rico's Jíbaro': Manhood, Race, Military Service and Self-Government during WWI” in Latino Studies (2015). Harry is currently working on two book projects, Fighting on Two Fronts: The Experience of the Puerto Rican Soldiers in the Korean War and Patriotism and Resistance: The Puerto Rican Experience during the Vietnam War. Harry is a Board member and Executive Director of the New York Chapter of the National Puerto Rican Agenda and has served on the Council of the Latin American Studies Association. Harry has an amazing story - growing up in Puerto Rico, dropping out of school, serving in the military, returning to school, then chasing a girl to Philadelphia, which serendipitously put him in friend-of-the-pod Jay Lockenour's graduate seminar at Temple University. The rest, as they say, is "history." We thoroughly enjoyed our chat with Harry Franqui-Rivera - your day will be better for listening to his story. Rec.: 11/18/2022

My guest today is Ken Heuer, Principal at Kidd & Company, a principal investment firm with a unique approach to designing businesses that transform their industry segments. Combining intensive research and hands-on involvement, Kidd & Co creates highly successful businesses that generate world-class investment returns. Ken Heuer joined Kidd & Company in 2008 and participates in all facets of the firm’s activities, including sourcing new opportunities, investment strategy development, conducting technical, financial and market due diligence, maintaining relationships with debt and equity co-investors, and overseeing strategy execution for existing investments. Previously Ken was a Managing Director at Spencer Trask, an early-stage venture capital firm, where he worked with companies in the life sciences, healthcare, information technology, software and communications sectors. Prior to Spencer Trask, Ken was an investment banker at JPMorgan, where he worked on numerous capital-raising and M&A transactions. Ken received a BS in Civil Engineering from Lehigh University and an MBA from New York University, where he was a Stern Scholar. Ken currently serves on the Board of the New York Chapter of the Alliance of Merger & Acquisition Advisors (AM&AA). I speak with Ken about the many bubbles and crashes he seems to have been a part of and rode to success over the years (internet in the 90s, real estate in 2008, and the pandemic) and also how Kidd & Company functions as a “generalist” investment firm, with perhaps fewer dollars to invest, but bringing in much higher returns than some megalithic private equity organizations. Kidd focuses on outsourcing the less desirable functions in their businesses to allow the principals to focus on what they enjoy - which has provided very successful exit opportunities in a number of industries. This podcast is brought to you by Axial, (www.axial.net), a trusted online platform for business owners & their M&A advisors to use to safely and intelligently explore and execute capital raises, acquisitions, and exits with strategic buyers or professional financial sponsors. I am your host, Peter Lehrman, Founder and CEO of Axial. In every episode, we will explore the vast world of small business M&A. We will interview both the proven and emerging owners, operators, investors, and advisors whose strategies and methods have been put to the test. If you have enjoyed this episode, check out Axial.com for more. There are recorded Axial member roundtables, downloadable tools for dealmakers, quarterly lead-table rankings, and lots of other useful information. Feel free to reach out to me directly at Peter@axial.net with questions, suggestions, or show topic ideas. Discussion points: How Ken got into banking and M&A - Business school in the late 90s, JP Morgan, early-stage venture capital in NY, then Kidd & Co. Ken knew it was time to leave the early-stage venture when it became just a long line of “sick patients” to triage

"Listen to them, the children of the night. What music they make." - Bram Stoker   The Buzzards go goth on this episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ, as we speak with acclaimed horror author Steven Van Patten and talk about all things vampires, werewolves and the shape of horror to come.    Van Patten is the author of the trilogy Brookwater's Curse - Volume1, Volume 2 and Volume 3: Extinction Agenda -  about a former Georgian plantation slave named Christian Brookwater who becomes a powerful vampire. He becomes an agent for a secret vampire law enforcement who has to keep those damn werewolves in check among other supernatural creatures of mayhem. Brookwater also can't seem to curb his murderous impulses when confronted by obnoxious racists, much to his agency's chagrin. The hero's journey continues as vampire politics, civil war and love triangles abound.   Van Patten has also written a two-book series, Killer Genius: She Kills Because She Cares and Killer Genius 2: Attack of the Gym Rats, about a woman named, appropriately enough, Kendra the Killer Genius. She is a super intelligent serial killer with a conscience and only kills those she conceives to be racist, sexist, abusive or dangerously criminal. In the sequel she takes on sexual predators and the Russian mob.   He also wrote a children's novel called Rudy's Night Out about a young boy who sneaks out at night to a party and discovers a scary world out there.  Will his father - a man with a secret and the last name Brookwater...hmmm - find him in time?! You'll just have to read it to find out for yourself!   He is also a co-author of two anthology series - Hell at the Way Station and Hell at Brooklyn Tea. The former he co-wrote with acclaimed author Marc L. Abbott and the latter with Abbott and Kirk Johnson. They are stories of horror centered around Brooklyn, where Van Patten grew up, and a framing device includes the authors themselves as participants in the supernatural shenanigans.   Hell at the Way Station won two African-American Literary Awards including Best Anthology and Best in Science Fiction. Van Patten also won an award for Best Independent Publisher for his Laughing Black Vampire Productions publishing company.   Van Patten is a member of the New York Chapter of the Horror Writers Association as well as a member of the Directors Guild of America (DGA). In his spare time he has done some stage managing for several television shows. He also wrote some television episodes for a series called "Viral Vignettes."   The Buzzards get all nerded out with Mr. Van Patten as they talk about his books, his publishing company, his fascination with horror, horror movies and the mighty borough of Brooklyn.  So, concoct your elixir of absinthe with a sugar cube and some water, turn out the lights and get ready to be thoroughly entranced by the new prince of darkness. The Buzzards get eerie with Steven Van Patten.   Please remember to subscribe to us on YouTube, iTunes or Spotify for all future and old episodes.  If you have any questions, comments, ideas or potential guests for us, please email us at FIVEDOLLARBUZZ@gmail.com.
