Today we are finishing up our series based on N.T Wright's book, Broken Signposts. We reflect on John 19:1-16, Broken Signposts – Power. Jesus is standing on trial before Pilate. Pilate has the power of life and death over Jesus; however, Jesus tells Pilate that the only power Pilate has comes from above. What is power? Why are we given power? How is power to be used as a follower of Jesus? These are all important questions in a time when we see many people use power carelessly and even dangerously for their own ends

Today we continue our series based on N.T Wright's book, Broken Signposts. We will reflect on John 1:1-18 Broken Signposts – Beauty. At the beginning of John's gospel, we see how John introduces us to who Jesus is. The universe was created through Jesus; this beautiful, wonderful universe. In Genesis we're told that God saw everything he had made and it was good, very good. The beauty found in creation points us to who God is and tells of God's glory.  John's focus is that in Jesus we have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son.

Today we are continuing our series based on N.T Wright's book Broken Signposts. We will reflect on John 13:1-17; Broken Signposts – Love. Jesus lives out His love for His disciples through the act of washing His disciples' feet. Love can be really hard, especially when the person you are showing love to is actually working against you. We all ache to be loved. However, many people feel alone and unloved today. Love is a signpost that points us to Jesus and his sacrificial love. Love that led Him to the cross, so that we can be reconciled and experience deep unconditional love.

Today we will begin a series based on N.T Wright's book Broken Signposts. As Wright recognizes, “signposts name a reality and point us in a direction.” The signposts we will reflect on point to deep meaning that help us understand the world and its challenges. However, these signposts are broken and let us down. This is why we will turn to the Gospel of John to show us how these themes point us to Jesus and the kingdom of heaven. We will reflect on John 3:16-21; Broken Signposts – Justice. Jesus is sent to the world not to condemn it, but to save the world through Himself. We know that things aren't the way they should be in our world and that injustice is all around us. Something needs to be done to make things right, but what? Jesus came to shine His light into the darkness and invite those who love the darkness to come into His light

Learning from the task of Fathering as a theme in the Old Testament.   Genesis 1:27–31 (NIV) 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” 29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.    Genesis 6:5–8 (NIV) 5 The LORD saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. 6 The LORD regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. 7 So the LORD said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.” 8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.   Deuteronomy 6:4–7 (NIV) 4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.     Mark 12:28–31 (NIV) 28 One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” 29 “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”   Jesus’ answer to the scribe’s question carries another important implication. His ‘first commandment’ is a version of the central Jewish prayer, the Shema (‘Shema’ means ‘listen’, as in ‘Listen, Israel …’). Devout Jews, from Jesus’ day to our own, pray this prayer regularly every day. Jesus is claiming nothing less than this: that through his work, his teaching, and the things he has come to Jerusalem to achieve, the central prayer and hope of Judaism is being fulfilled. This isn’t designed as a ‘new religion’, a way of life somehow different from what pious Jews sought after. This is the fulfilment of the law and the prophets… At another level, this comes as a considerable challenge to all contemporary Christians. Would anyone looking at us—our churches, our lives, the societies that claim in some sense to be ‘Christian’—ever have guessed that the man we claim to follow saw his followers as being people like this? Or to put it another way: when the crisis comes, what remains solid in your life and the life of your community? Wholehearted love of God and neighbour? Or the mad scramble of everyone trying to save their own skins? – N.T Wright.   1 Corinthians 10:11–13 (NIV) 11 These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come. 12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! 13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. Speaker: Pastor Sam Sutter

The early church fathers (there were surely mothers too :) called the Old Testament book of Isaiah the "fifth gospel" because it became so central in how the church understood the 'Christ-event. This Advent at First-Plymouth we will be giving special spiritual focus to the poetry and prophecy of the book of Isaiah. As N.T Wright put it: When you think of scriptural passages which point to a coming king, Isaiah chapters 9 and 11 come to mind. When you imagine the inclusion of gentiles in God's promise Isaiah chapter 2 is highlighted. When you think of a royal figure who will suffer to bring about God's long-planned redemption, the ‘servant songs' in Isaiah 40–55, climaxing in chapter 53, are the obvious places to go. And when you reflect that the New Testament celebrates the strange victory of God, through his anointed one, over all the dark forces in the world, all with the aim of bringing about the new heavens and new earth, then Isaiah 56–66 are the natural place to look." This year, let's celebrate the majesty and poetry of the arrival of Jesus with this ancient book of poems. It is the Book of Isaiah that helps us know "Love looks like this."
