D.H. Lawrence (1885-1930) is one of the most famous novelists of his era - and one of the most difficult to pin down. Was he a tasteless, avant-garde pornographer? Or the greatest imaginative novelist of his generation (as E.M. Forster once said)? What should we know about his hard-luck childhood and turbulent adult life? In this episode, Jacke talks to biographer David Ellis (D.H. Lawrence: A Critical Life) about the struggle to capture and convey the essence of Lawrence's life and works. PLUS Dorian Lynskey (Everything Must Go: The Stories We Tell About the End of the World), an expert in literature about cataclysmic events, stops by to discuss the last book he - and others - might turn to at the very end. The letters to the seven churches in Revelation 2-3 are possibly some of the best known parts of the apocalypic book, mainly due to their accessibility compared to the rest of it. But how should we read these seven letters? Are they examples of the history or eras of the church? Are they addressed to different types of church today? Are they symbolic? And why all the Old Testament references?Join Alex, Chris & Jo as they discuss these significant chapters, give some good background information that help make sense of what John is writing, and then talk aboput how we might be able to bring some meaning to us today. In this episode of Spiritual Misfits, Will Small interviews Robyn Whitaker, a biblical scholar specialising in the Book of Revelation. They discuss Robyn's journey of faith, her experiences as a spiritual misfit, and the relevance of apocalyptic literature in today's world. The conversation delves into the political implications of Revelation, the nature of divine violence, and the hopeful imagery found in the final chapters of the text. Robyn emphasises the importance of understanding Revelation as a critique of power and injustice, rather than a tool for justifying violence. They also touch on the significance of a hermeneutic of love, the creative engagement of scripture by figures like Jesus and Paul, and the challenges of introducing children to biblical stories in a way that is life-giving and positive. For some reason, human beings don't seem to be content just thinking about their own death: they insist on imagining the end of the entire world. In this episode, Jacke talks to author Dorian Lynskey (Everything Must Go: The Stories We Tell About the End of the World), who immersed himself in apocalyptic films and literature to discover exactly what doomsday prophets have been saying for the past few millennia - and what that can tell us about the people and cultures that listened. Why is Revelation so Weird? | Apocalyptic Literature Revelation strikes us a very weird, and that's specifically we are unfamiliar with the type of literature it is. Revelation is a hybrid type of literature: letter, prophecy, and apocalyptic. So… It's a letter of prophecy in the form of apocalyptic. And that means that to read it responsibly we must be aware of what apocalyptic literature is. The Mountain Hyperlink Episode (E13) — If you've been following along in our series on the mountain, you may have had moments where you thought, “I feel like I've heard this before.” And that's because you have—we've been on this mountain before! There are so many themes in the Bible, from mountains to tabernacles, to tests and cities. And while we try to isolate and study themes on their own, the Bible intentionally weaves them together. So whenever you encounter one theme in the Bible, it's always connected to and building on other themes in a beautiful tapestry. Today, we're trying something new called a hyperlink episode, where we'll play clips from previous series that interact and overlap with the theme of the mountain.View all of our resources for The Mountain →CHAPTERS Apocalypse on the Mountain (0:00-11:28)A Mountain Refuge City (11:28-22:41)Priestly Failures on the Mountain (22:41-49:45)OFFICIAL EPISODE TRANSCRIPTView this episode's official transcript.REFERENCED RESOURCESClip 1 is from “A Walking, Talking Apocalypse,” episode 5 in our 2020 series, Apocalyptic Literature.Clip 2 is from “Jerusalem: A Tale of Two Cities,” episode 9 in our 2023 series The City.Clip 3 is from “Doomed to Fail?” episode 3 in our 2021 series, The Royal Priest.Check out Tim's library here. You can experience our entire library of resources in the BibleProject app, available for Android and iOS.SHOW MUSIC“Rest Until Dark” by Sleepy Fish“Canary Forest” by Middle School, Aso, & AviinoBibleProject theme song by TENTSSHOW CREDITSProduction of today's episode is by Lindsey Ponder, producer, and Cooper Peltz, managing producer. Is the Book of Revelation a prediction of the events surrounding the end of the world? Is it a code or blueprint for determining the key players and signs? Or is St. John giving us something more like a playbook for the whole of the Christian life? Welcome to "Revelation for the Rest of Us"! Over the next several weeks, we will be reading and engaging with the major themes of the book by Scot McKnight and Cody Matchett. Our goal is to gain a better understanding of the Revelation, and to discover how the images and stories intersect with our daily lives, then & now! We highly encourage you to pick up a copy of McKnight and Matchett's book from their publisher, or wherever you purchase books. 10-6-24 Biblical-Literacy Mark completed A Study of Revelation with a focus on The Great News in Revelation 22. This final lesson closed out the study of Apocalyptic Literature and recapped the 7 vignettes each covering a segment of the age of the church to the 2nd coming. Mark revisited the 7th vignette acknowledging varied interpretations of the millennium, the binding of Satan, and Jesus' 2nd coming where He will judge all humanity on the Great White Throne and create a new heaven and a new earth. Points for Home: 1. Revelation speaks to us. 2. Live in Faith. 3. What a great ending. Listen to Mark read Revelation 22 with insight and wisdom concluding with “Surely I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen
Welcome to episode 171! We continue our summer series on biblical genres. Today, we will discuss apocalyptic literature. You can also find these episodes on Spring Baptist Church's YouTube channel. Here is a link to this week's episode.Overview of the BookThe Book of Revelation begins with a series of letters to seven churches, addressing their spiritual condition and exhorting them to persevere in their faith. It then shifts to a prophetic vision of heavenly worship, where the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ, is revealed as the only one worthy to open the sealed scroll, ushering in a series of judgments upon the earth. Through symbolic imagery, such as the four horsemen, the seven seals, and the seven trumpets, Revelation depicts the escalating conflicts and tribulations that precede the final battle between the forces of good and evil. The dragon, representing Satan, and the beast, symbolizing the Antichrist, wage war against the people of God, but their defeat is certain. The book culminates with the glorious return of Christ, the establishment of His millennial reign, the final judgment, and the creation of a new heaven and a new earth, where God will dwell eternally with His redeemed people. Significance and ImpactThe Book of Revelation holds immense significance for Christians, as it provides a prophetic glimpse into the ultimate triumph of God's kingdom and the fulfillment of His promises. This book offers hope and encouragement to believers facing persecution and trials, reminding them that their sufferings are temporary, and their eternal reward is secure. The vivid imagery and symbolic language of Revelation challenge us to view the world through the lens of eternity, recognizing that the cosmic battle between good and evil is not merely a physical struggle but a spiritual one with eternal consequences.Furthermore, the Book of Revelation reminds us of the centrality of Christ as the victorious Lamb, the one who has conquered sin and death, and who will ultimately reign as King of kings and Lord of lords.Practical ApplicationsAs we study the Book of Revelation, we can draw valuable lessons for our spiritual journey. The exhortations to the seven churches challenge us to examine our own spiritual condition, repent from complacency or compromise, and remain steadfast in our faith amidst trials and opposition. The vivid depictions of the eternal rewards awaiting those who overcome serve as a powerful motivation to persevere in our walk with Christ, keeping our eyes fixed on the eternal rather than the temporary. Moreover, the Book of Revelation inspires us to live with a sense of urgency and purpose, sharing the good news of salvation with those who have not yet experienced the transformative power of the gospel.ConclusionThe Book of Revelation stands as a powerful and enigmatic vision of the glorious finale of God's redemptive plan. Through its vivid imagery and symbolic language, this prophetic book unveils the ultimate triumph of God's kingdom, the defeat of evil, and the eternal reign of Christ. May the truths contained within Revelation fill us with hope, encourage us to persevere in our faith, and inspire us to live with eternity in mind, eagerly awaiting the day when Christ will return in glory and establish His everlasting kingdom.
One of the main themes throughout the book of Daniel is the faithfulness of God's people when they face their worst, like being exiled from their homeland, or facing death because other people have it out for you. The story of Daniel is about hope!
In Daniel 12:2-3 the dead awake, some to life, some to shame and contempt. This has long been understood to refer to bodily resurrection, one of a few such OT passages. But there are indications in the text's language that its intended sense is otherwise. Oh boy. Here we go. It's the book of Revelation (strap in for a wild ride)! A dragon, a white horse, a beast or two, trumpets, a woman clothed in the sun—what is going on? Read the book of Revelation and without any context or understanding, it may seem like it was torn from an epic science fiction novel. Typically this leads to two approaches: 1) those who think of it as a blueprint for the future, (yikes!) or 2) those who simply won't read it because it seems like too much to try to understand (relatable). However, with context and an acceptance that the book of Revelation's entirety cannot be fully explained, we can begin to see just how hopeful, necessary, and thrilling this book actually is! Pastor Megan Marshman takes us through it!
This week Hebrew Bible Scholar Dr. John H. Walton joins the show to discuss his new book, "The Lost World of the Prophets: Old Testament Prophecy and Apocalyptic Literature in Ancient Context". Walton claims that being responsive to God is at the heart of prophecy, but average readers of ancient prophecies and apocalyptic literature often come away thoroughly perplexed. Are the prophets speaking about their own times, about our present, or about some still-unrealized future? It's common to study prophecy with a focus on the sole question of prediction and fulfillment, either for the sake of apologetics or for understanding the end times, but such an approach fails to track with the original intent of the authors. We need to shake loose both from a paradigm of reading prophecy as an offer of mysterious divination as well as from the habit of constructing eschatological timelines of any sort. Walton helps us answer the question, "How do we read prophecy and apocalyptic literature like responsible adults?". Enjoy! Many of us stay away from spending too much time in the book of Revelation out of fear or intimidation. This is exactly why today's guest, Erick Sorensen, decided to dive into the book and differing interpretations. In today's show, Erick not only answers Kelsi's questions on the various approaches to Revelation and Christian eschatology, but offers a guide on how to rightly read Revelation with Christ and his kingdom at the center. Erick Sorensen is in charge of Church Partnerships in the Development Department at 1517. Prior to joining 1517, Erick served as a pastor for 16 years. He hosts the Law & Gospel Devotional on 1517's YouTube channel, co-hosts the 30 Minutes in the New Testament and Field Guide to the Bible podcasts, and is co-author of Scandalous Stories: A Sort of Commentary on the Parables. The word anxiety (or anxious) is used nine times in the Book of Mormon, and it appears in both positive and negative forms. In the positive form it refers to something more akin to “eagerness” (see Mosiah 29:38 and 3 Nephi 3:3), whereas the negative refers more to “uncertainty” or “troubling fear” (see 2 Nephi 1:16 and Mosiah 28:12). Of the seven negative references, four are penned by the prophet Jacob, including one in which he couples “great anxiety” with the counterbalancing attribute of “faith” (see Jacob 1:5). In this episode Dr. Jared Halverson, associate professor of ancient scripture, discusses the mental, emotional, and spiritual issues related to anxiety as explained in the life and teachings of Jacob. Professor Halverson closely examines Jacob's writings on the anxiety born of adversity (trauma), anxiety due to responsibility (pastoral perfectionism), and anxiety over one's standing before God (scrupulosity). In analyzing Jacob's words, we can find counsel and compassion, whether we struggle with anxiety or are anxious to support those who do. This week we sat down with Dr. Kevin DeYoung, senior pastor of Christ Covenant Church, North Carolina to speak to him about a recent talk he gave on Revelation 8:1-5. We asked him about preaching the book of Revelation and how to navigate the challenges that come with it, as well as about the message of his sermon, that God has ordained our prayers to be the moments that come to define history. You can listen to the whole of Kevin's series on Revelation on the Covenant Church website here: https://christcovenant.org/sermon-archive/ The Bible Matters Podcast is funded entirely by the generous donations of its listeners. In this episode I talk to Old Testament scholar Dr. John Walton about his brand-new book The Lost World of the Prophets: Old Testament Prophecy and Apocalyptic Literature in Ancient Contexts, out now on IVP Academic. In this conversation, we explore how prophecy in the Old Testament developed throughout the course of Israel's history, how prophecy fits into the cultural context of the Ancient Near east, why prophecy is primarily about speaking on behalf of God and not predicting the future, the relationship between prophecy and covenant, apocalyptic literature, and how prophecy should shape our understanding of the mission of the church and the future of God's creation. This is an incredible introduction to a very complex topic that all Christians and libertarians need to understand. Pastor Alan R. Knapp discusses the topic of "THE GENRE called ... Apocalypse ... is known as Apocalyptic Literature !" in his series entitled "Lenses 2008" This is Chapter 5 and it focuses on the following verses: Ephesians 1:17
Revelation - Part Three: Apocalypse. This episode, Mike and Tim begin a conversation on 'genre,' and how the original audience understood and entered into the 'apocalyptic literature' of Revelation. How does the first sentence set up the book? What are we to understand from the time period? How does time itself inform how we approach Revelation? How is the Bible like a Barnes & Noble or any bookstore? How have we done a disservice to the text with a linear approach? First, Mike and Tim discuss an email asking about the "He Gets Us" ad campaign that will feature during the Super Bowl. Is this how "evangelism" should look? Would Jesus use this approach? Is more eyes on Jesus a good or bad thing, especially in a commercial setting? And Tim shares some Tim's Troubled Times over extreme conservatives who are attacking schools and why did Trump execute three times as many people during his Presidency that the US had in the last 60 years? Characteristics of Apocalyptic Literature: 1. Pseudonymous 2. Narrative Form 3. Filled with Symbolism 4. Employs esoteric language interpreted through a heavenly intermediary 5. Characterized by Dualism 6. Treats the final events as imminent. 7. Expresses a pessimistic view of the present time 8. Deterministic Future As always, we encourage and would love discussion as we pursue.
