This message kicks off a four-week focus on Readiness, Repentance, Service, and Community—starting with Jesus' call to be ready. Walking through Luke 12, Pastor Landon urges believers to live with eternal urgency: girded and lamps burning, watching, working, and discerning the times—because Christ could return at any moment. Key Themes • Readiness: Girded for action; lamps filled and burning (Luke 12:35–40; 1 Pet. 1:13). • Watching & Hope: Joy tied to longing for His appearing; our blessed hope (1 Thes. 4:13–18; Titus 2:13). • Working: Faithful stewardship now—time, talents, treasure—because to whom much is given, much is required (Luke 12:41–48; 1 Cor. 4:2). • Division: Loyalty to Jesus above all else (Luke 12:49–53; Matt. 10:34–39; John 15:18–19). • Discerning: Read the signs of the times; stay sober and awake (Luke 12:54–56; Rom. 13:11; 1 Thes. 5:6). • Reconciling: Settle with God now—today is the day of salvation (Luke 12:57–59; 2 Cor. 6:2; Rom. 5:1). Scriptures Mentioned Luke 12:35–59; 1 Pet. 1:13; Matt. 24–25; Rev. 1; 4–5; 19; 1 Cor. 15:51–52; 1 Thes. 4:13–18; 5:1–6; Titus 2:13; Rom. 13:11; 14:12; 2 Cor. 5:10; Zech. 4:6. Practical Responses • Cut one daily distraction (social, TV, gaming) to create space for Word & prayer. • Journal what God is teaching you; share a reflection with a friend. • Take a step in discipleship—be discipled and disciple someone. • Evaluate stewardship: where are you investing eternally vs. temporally? • If you don't know Jesus, reconcile with God today (2 Cor. 6:2).

The day is coming when all Israel will bend the knee to the Good Shepherd, the King of kings, the King of the Jews! This is the plain teaching of Scripture. This isn't Zionist or Dispensationalist propaganda. John Calvin, Matthew Henry, Jonathan Edwards, Charles Spurgeon, J.C. Ryle, and a great cloud of Bible believing, prophecy believing, Biblical Covenant believing saints have faithfully declared this certain truth...the truth that Zechariah 12-13 makes abundantly clear. God will fulfill His prophecies and uphold His covenant with Israel as a nation. Jews and Gentiles will be united under the blood of the Lamb! "I will refine them like silver and test them like gold. They will call on my name and I will answer them; I will say, They are my people,' and they will say, 'The Lord is our God.'" -Zech. 13:9

Zechariah     This week we've reached the book of Zechariah. After spending a couple of weeks in the very short books of Obadiah and Haggai, I found Zechariah to be quite a contrast. It's a much longer book with 14 chapters, and the style of prophetic writing is quite different too. There is so much that we could choose to look at in this complex, beautiful book, but it would be beyond the scope of this podcast to look in detail at all the prophesies that Zechariah received. Instead I'll start with a brief historical background and an overview of some of the main themes of the book, and then I'll focus on some of the prophecies that were fulfilled most clearly in the life of Jesus. We'll end with some thoughts to take away for our own lives. Zechariah came from a priestly family. We are given the names of his father and grandfather, Berechiah and Iddo. His grandfather's name appears in Nehemiah 12:4 where he is listed as one of the Levites who returned to Jerusalem with Zerubbabel in about 538 BC, according to the edict of King Cyrus of Persia. Zechariah's prophecy starts 2 months after Haggai's. The book is made up of a collection of nine visions followed by other prophetic oracles. These take the form of individual units, which don't follow a clear narrative pattern. The style of the prophecy is futuristic, and sometimes quite obscure to the modern reader. Many of the prophecies bear similarities to those found in the book of Revelation, at the end of the New Testament, and they need to be approached in a similar way, with careful appreciation of the symbolism involved. As we learned last week, some of the exiled people of Judah had returned to Jerusalem after King Cyrus permitted them to do so. They had started to rebuild the temple and the walls but they had become discouraged by opposition. They were also facing difficulties in their everyday lives, including high taxes under the Persian rule. Worship of God and obedience to his law were quite low down on their list of priorities. The book of Zechariah opens with a call from God to the people to repent and return to him: Therefore say to them, Thus declares the LORD of hosts: Return to me, says the LORD of hosts, and I will return to you, says the LORD of hosts. (Zechariah 1:3) ~ The people do repent and turn back to God, so God keeps his promise. There then follows a series of visions that Zechariah receives during the night. The visions contain God's promises of restoration for his people, forgiveness, removal of sin and idolatry from the land, and the blessing and expansion of Jerusalem.  God calls his people back to sincere and genuine faith. He wants them to be just, merciful, mindful of the vulnerable and honest in their dealings with each other (Zech 7:8-10). The book of Zechariah does contain some messages of judgement for the enemies of God's people, and for those who do not respond to God's call to return to him, but the majority of the book is made up of promises of hope and restoration. God promises to turn the former times of fasting into times of feasting for his people (Zech 7:18-19). In the second half of the book, we find prophecy relating to the coming King of Zion. He is portrayed as a divine warrior (Zech 9:1-8) and also called The Branch. In chapter 11, God promises to replace the evil shepherds of his people, the corrupt leaders, with a good shepherd. These are all prophecies about the coming Messiah.   ~ There are up to 54 passages in Zechariah that are alluded to in 67 places in the New Testament, mostly in the book of Revelation. In addition, there are a few specific prophecies in Zechariah, which find their fulfilment very clearly in the life of Jesus. The gospel writers quote these verses from Zechariah in their accounts. We'll look at these verses now. ~ Firstly, Zechariah 9:9: Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. (Zechariah 9:9) ~ Matthew and John both refer to this verse in their gospel accounts of Jesus entering Jerusalem riding on a donkey (Matt 21:5, John 12:15). They understood that Jesus was deliberately fulfilling prophecy, making a clear statement about his identity as the promised Messiah. ~ In Zechariah 11:13 we read a slightly odd statement about the good shepherd being valued at 30 pieces of silver, and these pieces subsequently being thrown back into the house of the Lord, to the potter. In Matthew 27:9 we see that Matthew draws on the words of Zechariah and Jeremiah and applies these to the actions and fate of Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. When Judas saw what was going to happen to Jesus, he tried to give the blood money back to the priests, who refused to take it back. Overcome with remorse and guilt, he threw the 30 pieces of silver back into the temple and went and hanged himself. The priests and elders bought a field known as the Potters Field with the money and it was used as a burial place for foreigners. ~ In Zechariah 12:10 we read: “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn. (Zechariah 12:10) ~ John takes this verse and applies it to Jesus' crucifixion. In John 19:31-37 we read about the soldier who pierced Jesus' side to verify that he was dead after his crucifixion. John then quotes Zechariah, “they will look on him whom they have pierced” and sees the action of the solider as a fulfilment of this prophecy. There are other Old Testament passages which speak prophetically about the manner of the Messiah's death, notably sections in Isaiah 53 and in Psalm 22. The details are quite striking, particularly bearing in mind that crucifixion did not come into use as a means of execution until several hundred years after Psalm 22 was written. ~ Finally we see Zechariah 13:7 quoted by Matthew (26:31) and Mark (14:27) in their descriptions of Jesus's disciples deserting him and fleeing from the garden of Gethsemane. ~ “Strike the shepherd and the sheep will be scattered”. (Zechariah 13:7) ~ The verse in Zechariah is describing the good shepherd and how he will be struck down. Matthew and Mark both see the scattering of the disciples in the scattering of the sheep. ~ The book of Zechariah ends on a note of victory and triumph with God reigning over the whole earth and Jerusalem finally dwelling in peace. There are two short verses from the early parts of the book that I want to consider. The first is Zechariah 4:10. In this section, God is encouraging Zechariah that he will empower Zerubbabel and his fellow workers to complete the rebuilding of the temple. God says: For whoever has despised the day of small things shall rejoice, and shall see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel. (Zechariah 4:10a ESV) ~ Sometimes it can feel as if we live in a day of small things. The ordinary routines and rhythms of our everyday lives can seem quite insignificant. There is a temptation to always be looking ahead to what the next big thing will be or feeling despondent about an apparent lack of excitement or significance in what we do. Sometimes we have our mountain top experiences and spiritual highs in special events or significant achievements, but the reality is that life is lived in the in-between times. In the days of small things. ~ God knows all the days of our lives and each day and moment can be used for his glory. But not if we're despising the time. Our awesome Creator and Sustainer is the source of our every breath and his gift of life to us is not to be taken lightly. In the times that are difficult, painful or seemingly futile, we can cling on to Jesus' promise to us that our Father God cares about us more than we can imagine. He even knows the number of hairs on our heads (Matt 10:30). ~ The second verse is Zechariah 3:6. God gives Zechariah a message to encourage Zerubbabel. He wants him to know that the rebuilding of the temple will be accomplished and he says: “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.” (Zech 3:6) ~ There are times when we will face seemingly insurmountable obstacles or daunting mountains of opposition. The Holy Spirit can empower us in ways we could not imagine and those mountains can become plains in front of us. We need to be prepared for God to work in ways we do not expect but if we have faith in his promises to us, the unlimited power of the Holy Spirit is available to help us and that is far better than any human power or might. ~ I'll close with Paul's words to the Ephesians: Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen. (Ephesians 3:20-21) ~ Right Mouse click or tap to save this as an audio mp3 file

OBADIAH (SERVENT OF YAHWEHThere is at least twelve people name Obadiah in the Bible. Smiths Bible Dictionary The book of Obadiah is about Edom's judgment and Israel's restoration Obadiah means “Servant of Yahweh”. As a servant of Yahweh our desire is to work for Him and also to be pleasing to Him. The Deliverance and Restoration of Israel (Obadiah 1:17-18): Within this verse 17 we shall read of a title and type of Yahshua Messiah, we shall Him as a Deliverer - The verse speaks of deliverance on Mount Zion, which Christians interpret as a reference to the ultimate deliverance brought by Yahshua Messiah. This deliverance is seen as a type of the salvation Yahshua Messiah provides.17           Mount Zion = When the Bible speaks of ‘Jerusalem' it is often referring to her in her natural or fallen state – the way she is now. When she is called ‘Zion' it is referring to her in her Kingdom state, the way that she is going to be (holy) when Yahshua Messiah returns and sets up His millennial Kingdom. There is going to be deliverance = The world has always wanted to destroy the Jewish people. Because of Yahweh's promise to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob He has always kept a remnant alive. Their possessions = Once again we again we see that Hebrew word ‘ETH' showing us that these People are Yahweh's/Yahshua Messiah's People18  stubble = Hay or Straw. Everyone knows what happens when you put fire and straw together… There will be no survivor = The measure that Edom used will be measured back to him (Matthew 7:2). His desire was to destroy the remnant of Israel, so he will be left with no remnant. In the final 3 verses we can proclaim ‘The kingdom of the Lord'Note: Verses 19 &20 reveal to us that Yahweh is still interested in the land. In so many prophecies, Yahweh has promised to bring back the people so that they can settle and take possession of the land. There is a spiritual battle for the actual ground of Israel. Within this verse 19 we read the Hebrew ‘ETH' 4 times, showing us that this ‘ETH' Yahweh/Yahshua Messiah is truly in charged. The mount = 1st instance of ‘ETH'2nd instance of ‘ETH' ‘The plain of the Philistines'The fields = 3rd instance of ‘ETH'Benjamin shall possess Gilead = 4th instance of ‘ETH'. All four showing that Yahweh/Yahshua Messiah is in control!20   the captivity of this host = that is, the captives of this multitude of Israelites. The Kingdom of the Lord (Obadiah 1:21): The book concludes with the promise that "the kingdom will be the LORD's." Deliverers will ascend Mount Zion to judge the mountains of Esau, signifying the ultimate triumph of Yahweh's kingdom. We also see that this book concludes with a vision of Yahweh's ultimate sovereignty and the establishment of His kingdom. 21  saviours = Related to making salvation or bringing deliverance.to judge ... Esau = to punish (so “judge,” 1Sam. 3:13) ... Edom. Edom is the type of Israel's and Yahweh's last foes. The Mount of Esau = here in the Hebrew we have another instance of “ETH”. Telling us that Yahweh/Yahshua Messiah is in control!                                                      kingdom shall be the Lord's = under Messiah (Dan. 2:44; 7:14, 27; Zech. 14:9; Luke 1:33; Rev. 11:15; 19:6).Join me as we go Chapter by Chapter, Verse by Verse, Unraveling the Words of Yahweh!Have any questions? Thinking on Scripture with Dr. Steven R. Cook
Overview of Future Prophetic Events

Thinking on Scripture with Dr. Steven R. Cook

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 29, 2025 70:17

Introduction      What follows is an overview of future prophetic events as revealed in Scripture. It is not a comprehensive or technical analysis, but a panoramic survey designed to provide clarity and structure for understanding God's prophetic program. This presentation moves sequentially—from the Rapture of the Church to the eternal state—outlining the major movements of eschatology as understood from a literal, historical, grammatical interpretation of Scripture. Each section is grounded in key biblical passages and reflects a traditional dispensational perspective, affirming the distinctiveness of Israel and the Church and the unfolding of God's sovereign plan through both time and eternity. Readers should note that this is a bird's-eye view, intended to give the big picture. Deeper exegetical and theological treatments of these subjects are available elsewhere—but for now, we take our place as students of prophecy, watching history move steadily toward its divine consummation. Prophetic Overview      The next great event in God's prophetic program is the Rapture of the Church (John 14:1-3), which is the sudden, bodily, and upward catching away of all Church-age believers—both living and dead—to meet Christ in the air (1 Th 4:13-18; 1 Cor 15:51-53). The word Rapture—though not found in English Bibles—comes from the Latin rapturo, which translates the Greek harpazō (“to snatch away”) in 1 Thessalonians 4:17, and accurately describes the sudden catching away of believers to meet Christ in the air. This event is imminent, meaning it could occur at any moment, with no signs preceding it. It is distinct from the Second Coming and is exclusively for the Church, the body and bride of Christ (Eph 5:25-27). At the Rapture, deceased believers will be resurrected, and living believers will be instantly transformed. This marks the end of the Church Age—a mystery age not revealed in the Old Testament—and removes believers from the earth before God pours out His wrath in the Tribulation (1 Th 1:10; 5:9). The Church is promised deliverance, not participation, in the Day of the Lord (Rev 3:10). According to Fruchtenbaum: "The Church is composed of all true believers from Pentecost in Acts two until the Rapture of the Church. The Rapture excludes the Old Testament saints. It also excludes the Tribulation saints. The only saints who will be raptured are the Church saints. The Rapture passages clearly state that only those who are in Christ will partake of the Rapture."[1]      After the Rapture and while the Tribulation unfolds on earth, believers in heaven will appear before the judgment seat of Christ—also called the Bema seat—for evaluation and reward (2 Cor 5:10; Rom 14:10-12). According to Pentecost, “The believer's works are brought into judgment, called ‘the things done in his body' (2 Cor. 5:10), in order that it may be determined whether they are good or bad.”[2] This is not a judgment for sin, as all sins were fully paid for by Christ on the cross (Rom 8:1; Heb 10:14), and believers are already justified by faith (Rom 3:28; 5:1; Gal 2:16). Rather, the Bema is a judgment of the believer's service, motives, and faithfulness in the Christian life. Paul describes this as a testing of each person's work—whether it was built with gold, silver, and precious stones, or with wood, hay, and straw (1 Cor 3:12-15). Those works of eternal value, done in alignment with God's Word, empowered by the Spirit, and offered for the glory of God, will endure the fire of divine evaluation and be rewarded. Unfruitful or self-centered efforts will be burned up, resulting in loss of reward—but not loss of salvation. The Bema seat thus underscores the seriousness of our stewardship in this life and highlights the grace of God, who not only saves but also rewards His people for their faithfulness. It is here that crowns are awarded (2 Tim 4:8; 1 Pet 5:4; Jam 1:12), and the Church is made ready as the adorned bride of Christ (Rev 19:7-8).      Following the Rapture, the Tribulation period begins, a seven-year timeframe marked by divine judgment and escalating global chaos (Dan 9:27; Matt 24:4-28). According to Thomas Ice, “In this discourse [Matt 24:4-28], Jesus describes for the disciples the tribulation period. In verses 4-14, He speaks about the first half of the tribulation, and in verses 15-28, He describes the second half leading up to the second coming.”[3] The Tribulation begins with the signing of a covenant between the coming world ruler—the Antichrist—and Israel (Dan 9:27). This covenant allows Israel to resume temple worship, likely including animal sacrifices. The first half of the Tribulation (three and a half years) is marked by political deception, regional wars, famine, and limited divine judgments (Rev 6:1-8). Though catastrophic, these judgments are restrained, giving the world time to repent. Two notable events during this time include the ministry of the 144,000 sealed Jewish evangelists (Rev 7:1-8) and the rise of global religious syncretism symbolized by the harlot of Revelation 17.      Midway through the Tribulation, the Antichrist breaks his covenant with Israel, halts temple sacrifices, and sets up the abomination of desolation in the rebuilt Jewish temple, proclaiming himself to be God (Dan 9:27; Matt 24:15; 2 Th 2:3-4). This initiates the Great Tribulation, the second and more intense half of the seven-year period (Matt 24:21-22). During this time, Satan is cast down to earth with great fury (Rev 12:7-12), and the Antichrist is empowered to wage war against the saints, particularly the believing Jewish remnant and Gentile converts who refuse to worship him (Rev 13:7-10). The False Prophet promotes this global idolatry and enforces the mark of the beast (Rev 13:11-18). Despite escalating evil, God continues to offer grace through angelic proclamations (Rev 14:6-7) and the faithful witness of believers, many of whom are martyred.      As the Tribulation nears its end, a series of cataclysmic judgments intensify God's wrath: trumpet and bowl judgments devastate the environment, economy, and world population (Rev 8-9; 16). Political alliances form against Israel, setting the stage for the Battle of Armageddon. The kings of the earth, stirred by demonic influence, gather in the valley of Megiddo to destroy Jerusalem and annihilate the Jewish people (Zech 12:2-3; Rev 16:13-16). But just as it seems all hope is lost, the heavens open, and Christ returns in glory with His holy angels and glorified saints (Zech 14:1-11; Rev 19:11-16). According to Ryrie, “the second coming of Christ will occur prior to the Millennium, which will see the establishment of Christ's kingdom on this earth for a literal one thousand years.”[4] This Second Coming is visible, dramatic, and earth-shaking. Christ will personally destroy the Antichrist and the False Prophet, casting them into the lake of fire (Rev 19:19-20), and He will bind Satan in the abyss for 1,000 years (Rev 20:1-3).      At the return of Christ, the Millennial Kingdom will be established—a literal 1,000-year reign of Jesus Christ on earth, centered in Jerusalem (Rev 20:4-6). Fruchtenbaum states, “The Millennium will not begin the day immediately following the last day of the Great Tribulation because there will be a seventy-five day interval.”[5] The 75-day interval serves to cleanse and prepare the earth for Christ's Millennial reign by judging the nations, restoring order, and inaugurating millennial blessings (Dan 12:11-12; Matt 25:31-46). After that, Christ will establish His kingdom on earth. He will fulfill all Old Testament covenants with Israel, including the Abrahamic (Gen 12:1-3), Davidic (2 Sam 7:16; Psa 89:35-37; Luke 1:31-33), and New Covenants (Jer 31:31-34). Israel will be regathered, restored, and exalted among the nations (Isa 2:2-4; Zech 14:16-21). The curse on nature will be partially lifted, and peace, righteousness, and justice will characterize Christ's reign (Isa 11:1-10). Temple worship will resume, though modified, with sacrifices serving as memorials of Christ's once-for-all sacrifice (Ezek 40–48). Though Satan is bound, human beings born during the Millennium—descendants of Tribulation survivors—will still have sin natures and need salvation.      At the end of the thousand years, Satan is released for a final rebellion (Rev 20:7-9). He will deceive a vast number of people, proving that even in a perfect environment, man's sin nature still inclines him to rebel against God. Fire from heaven will consume the rebellious forces, and Satan will be cast into the lake of fire forever (Rev 20:10). Then comes the Great White Throne Judgment, where all unbelievers throughout history are resurrected, judged according to their works, and condemned to eternal separation from God in the lake of fire (Rev 20:11-15). This is not a judgment to determine salvation, but to reveal the just grounds for condemnation due to their rejection of God's provision of grace. There is no mention of the Church here, as believers were already judged at the Bema Seat following the Rapture (2 Cor 5:10; Rom 14:10).      After the final judgment, God creates a new heaven and a new earth where righteousness dwells (2 Pet 3:13; Rev 21:1). The eternal state begins, free from sin, death, pain, and sorrow. The New Jerusalem descends from heaven, adorned like a bride, and becomes the dwelling place of the redeemed (Rev 21:2-4). God's people from all ages will dwell in perfect fellowship with Him forever, enjoying His presence, His glory, and His goodness without end. There will be no temple in the New Jerusalem, for the Lord God and the Lamb are its temple (Rev 21:22). The curse is gone (Rev 22:3), the water of life flows freely, and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. Eternity will be a time of unbroken peace, joy, service, and worship. The former things will have passed away, and the redeemed will enjoy their inheritance in the presence of their Savior forever. Summary      The prophetic Word of God unveils a majestic and ordered panorama of future events, from the imminent Rapture of the Church to the eternal state in the new heavens and new earth. Each stage—whether the Tribulation, Christ's return, the Millennial Kingdom, or the final judgment—demonstrates God's sovereign control over history and His faithfulness to fulfill every covenant and promise. For the Church, prophecy is about prediction and preparation. It reminds us that history is moving steadily toward divine consummation, and that our hope is anchored not in the shifting sands of this world, but in the unshakable promises of our returning Savior. As we await that blessed hope, we do so with confidence, vigilance, and joy, knowing that the same God who keeps His Word about the future is the same God who sustains us in the present. Jesus's death and burial means that I must die to myself. I won't experience His power until I surrender my former way of life. To be raised to new life, the old self must die and be buried. That means coming to Jesus is about surrender. For “those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires” (Gal. 5:24). When we met Nicodemus in John 3, he was a scared and lost man. He was drawn to Jesus, but he came to Him by night because he was not ready to let go of his former way of life. Nicodemus now takes part in burying Jesus's body, signaling that his old self was dead and new life had arrived! “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me” (Galatians 2:20). Take-Home Message: Jesus's finished work has finished me. Jesus's death petitions me to die (28-30). “It is finished” means… Separation is finished.Sin is finished.Satan is finished.Death is finished.I am finished. Jesus's piercing permits me to be passed over (31-37). Bible references: 1 Jn. 5:6-8; Jn 7:38-39; Nu 9:12; Ex 12:46; Ps 34:20; Zech 12:10; 13:1 Jesus's burial prepares me for a new life (38-42). Message: It is Finished Scripture: John 19:28-42 Simple. Only Jesus had perfect faith – but he gives a very useful lesson to his disciples in today's ch. 17 in Matthew. He had come down from the mountain on which he had been with his 3 chosen disciples – in the meantime the other disciples had been unable to heal an epileptic boy an anxious father had brought to them. They had reason to expect they would be able to perform a healing as they had earlier performed healings when Jesus sent the 12 out to “Proclaim the kingdom …Heal the sick …” [10 v.7,8] among “the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” They had the faith then to do it, but they had been specially commissioned by Jesus to do so. This time Jesus calls them, “Faithless … how long am I to be with you?” [v.17] and heals the boy “instantly” [v.18] They ask Jesus why were they unable to heal, he says, “Because of your little faith” [v.20] Then he makes a remarkable statement. “ … if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed you will say …”Now a mustard seed grows because it has been divinely programmed to grow into a mustard bush, that books tell us grew as high as a horse's head, as long as it is “fed and watered” (as the hymn goes) sometimes needing the help of humans. So it is “faith” in what has been divinely programmed. Now note what Jesus adds! “you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there, and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.' Jesus is making a particular point. Sometimes Bible readers talk of faith to move mountains, but Jesus does not say, faith to move any mountain, he says, “faith to move this mountain”, and there is a particular mountain in Israel that God is going to move! It is programmed to happen – like the mustard seed.Do we really believe the prophets with all our heart? It is prophesied “on that day” when “his feet shall stand on the mount of Olives … so that one half of the mountain shall move northward and the other half shall move southward” [Zech 14 v.4] – this mountain will move!Recall the words of the “two men in white robes” (angels) to the astonished disciples who watched Jesus ascend from the Mount of Olives , “This Jesus .. will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” [Acts 1 v.11]That time will be utterly awesome, just like the experience of those chosen disciples on the mount that we read today. When Jesus was transfigured, “they fell on their faces and were terrified” [v.7] In the future those with true faith will hear Jesus saying something like he said to those 3 disciples, “Rise and have no fear.”What is our “faith like?” ` What wonders awaits those with a genuine faith that Jesus will reward – for “Nothing will be impossible” in God's kingdom.

Intro: The Bible, among many things, is a book of motivation. Name the subject and God gives a Scripture for its motivation. In this series of lessons, we will look at eight Scriptures that motivate us to do the ministry of missions = reaching the lost Lesson One: Psalm 126:5-6: This text is one of many in the Old Testament that give further evidence of the inspiration of the Bible. We know the New Testament is the Old Testament revealed but it is enlightening to see that the Old Testament is in many ways the New Testament concealed. Note: Num. 21:8-9; Prov. 11:30; Psalm 22; Isaiah 53; Zech. 9:9; 13:6 1. Someone must sow something. Ps. 126:5 • Precious seed. • The seed is the Word of God. Ref. Luke 8:11 2. Someone must do something. Ps. 126:6 • Go forth! Ref. Mark 16:15 • Carry the seed = the word of God. Ref. 2 Tim. 4:2 3. Someone must sow with the right motive. • With tears. Ps. 126:5 • Tears reveal our heart and God sees the heart. Ref. Ps. 139:23 4. Someone must go with the right motive. Ps. 126:6 • Soul winning, Missions, must be done with weeping. • As water is to natural seed, our tears are to Spiritual seed. Ref. Acts 20:31; Matt. 9:36 5. Something wonderful happens when we "do missions." Ps. 126:5-6 • We reap with joy. Vs 5; Ref. Gal.6:9; 1 Cor. 15:58 • Souls will doubtless be saved. Vs 6b • We will receive our reward = Crown of rejoicing. Ref. 1 Thess. 2:19

Up To Jerusalem - Teaching 18 Scripture: Zechariah 12:10, John 19:31-42, Matthew 27:3-10, Acts 1:18-19, Matthew 28:1-4, Mark 16:1-4, Luke 24:1-10, John 20:1-18, 1 Corinthians 15:20. Today we look at Jesus' resurrection.  Jesus dies on a Friday and this particular Friday was Friday, the Day of Preparation - the day of preparing the lambs for a special Saturday Sabbath, the First Sabbath of Passover.  Following Saturday, the First Sabbath of Passover was Sunday, and this particular Sunday was also a special day as well, it was the Day of First Fruits.  Jesus would rise on this day, from the grave, and on that day He would rise as the first fruits of those who rise from the dead. “But now Christ is risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of those who slept.” 1 Cor 15:20. Back to our story, John tells us that Jesus' legs were not broken - something done by Roman soldiers to insure death, but they pierced His side with a spear. This fulfills scripture, “They will look on me whom they have pierced and mourn for him as for an only son.” Zech 12:10. Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus wrapped Jesus' body in linen and spices and laid Him in a new tomb. Jesus' followers are in deep grief. The next morning, Saturday, the First Sabbath of Passover, chief priests and pharisees go to Pilate to ask for Jesus' tomb to be made secure because Jesus had said He would rise after 3 days, and the chief priests and pharisees want to stop anyone from stealing the body and making it look like Jesus did rise from the dead.  They seal the tomb and place guard at it. Then the next day - Sunday - the Day of First Fruits - is Jesus' resurrection day! Pastor puts together the 4 gospel accounts of the women that came to the tomb that morning. While it appears they are in conflict Pastor lays things out using a map of Jerusalem and suggests those with further interest to read the book “Easter Enigma: Are the Resurrection Accounts in Conflict” by John Wenham. Pastor shares historical information of the time period that supports the biblical narrative, even sharing recent archaeological information regarding the possible location of Jesus' tomb. Using all four gospels, Pastor takes us through who these women were and their early morning activities of visiting the tomb and putting forth the order of the morning events. As we continue with the story, we read there was another violent earthquake and angels came down from heaven, scare the guards and then roll the stone from the sealed tomb. Now the women enter the tomb to find it empty. Mary Magdalene decides to run and let the disciples know what they found. The other women ask the angels where they have put Jesus' body and they tell them He's not there as He has risen just as He said He would.  At this point Peter and other disciples head for the tomb. Inside they see the strips of linen and the cloth around Jesus' head lying there and head back to where they were staying.  Mary Magdelene is back at the tomb and is the first to see and speak to Jesus. She's outside the tomb crying and looks inside to see 2 angels seated where Jesus' body had been - one at the head the other at the feet. Pastor shares insight into the similarity of the two angels sitting as they were where Jesus had been and the Ark of the Covenant in the holy of Holies. A fascinating comparison. The angels ask Mary why she is crying and she replies that they have take her Lord. She turns around and there is Jesus!  Though she doesn't yet recognize Him. Jesus asks her as the angels had about why she was crying. Looking at Jesus, who she thought was the gardener, she says, “They have taken Jesus, do you know where they have taken Him?” Then Jesus says, “Mary.” And she immediately recognized Him! She cries out in joy and Jesus tells her, “Go to my brothers, tell them I'm ascending to my Father and your Father, to My God and your God, and tell them what you have seen!” This is only the morning's events!  Join us next time for the rest of all that happened that Resurrection Sunday! Matthew was the only Gospel writer to record the account of what happened to Judas and how he ended his life. But Matthew gives us some very interesting insights into how the Scriptures were fulfilled even through the actions of Judas. One of the things that stands out is that Matthew is the only one to use the term ‘went and hanged himself‘ (Matt.27:5), as there is no other occurrence of that phrase elsewhere in the New Testament. However, Matthew must have known that the phrase does occur once in the LXX of 2 Sam.17:23 (i.e., the Greek translation of the Old Testament), where David's betrayer did the same thing – Ahithophel went and hung himself. Is there any connection? Well, Matthew seemed to think so, and it shows how well he knew the Old Testament, or that the Holy Spirit guided him, and the Holy Spirit reminded him of these verses. However, then when it comes to Matt.27:9-10, we might think that Matthew got it all wrong when he wrote, ‘Then was fulfilled what had been spoken by the prophet Jeremiah…., since you see it was actually Zechariah who wrote those words in Zech.11:11-13. So we have to ask, “What was going on there?” Well it seems that Matthew's mind was triggered by what Judas did and he saw a combination of Jer.19:1-13 and Zech.11:11-13, and put 2 and 2 together, and saw that in some way Zechariah was also fulfilled in Jer.19, and ultimately this was fulfilled through the actions of Judas. Our Lord rides in this humble fashion because He is entering Jerusalem to humble Himself even to the point of death on a cross (Phil. 2:5–11). His kingly crown will not be made of gold but of thorns, the sign of sin's curse. For His royal reign is displayed in bearing this curse for His people, saving us from our enemies by sacrificing His own life. The sinless One takes the place of the sinner so that the sinner can be freed and bear the name “Barabbas,” “son of the Father” (Matthew 26 and 27). The Passion Prayers of Jesus“Our technologies permit us to manipulate time and space. They leave distance annihilated, cause things to grow and improve productivity.” - Michael KratsiosIf you are a born again believer, there are two ways that you have already experienced spiritual time travel. The first way is that the Bible teaches that if you are a believer, you were crucified with Christ (Gal. 2:20), died with Christ (Rom. 6:8), buried with Christ (Col. 2:12), raised with Christ (Col. 2:12), made alive together with Christ (Eph. 2:5), raised up with Christ to heavenly places (Eph. 2:6), fellow heirs with Christ (Rom. 8:17), are one spirit with Christ (1 Cor. 6:17), will be with Christ after death (Phil. 1:21, 23), will return with Christ when He returns to earth (Rev. 17:14, 2 Tim. 2:12).The second way is that in the last 72 hours of Jesus' passion week, He prayed many specific prayer requests that still get answered today 2,000 years after He prayed them! The prayer of restoration for believers.“Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” - Luke 22:31-32The prayer of thanks despite an impending ordeal (Matthew 26:26-29; Mark 14:22-25; Luke 22:17-20; 1 Cor. 11:23-26)The prayer for basic discipleship commitments of followers (Jn. 17:1-26). -That Christians will grow in their relationship with God (v. 3, 5)-That Christians will be good stewards of God's words (v. 8) -That Christians will know their eternal security in Christ. (v. 9-10)_-That Christians will experience unity (v. 11, 22-23)-That Christians will experience the fulfilling joy of Jesus (v. 13)-That as Christians live in the world they will be protected from the Evil one (v. 15)-That Christians will ‘bathe' regularly by obeying the Bible's truths (v. 17)-That Christians will reproduce as they go out into the world (v. 18, 20).-That Christians will be with Jesus and behold His Heavenly glory (v. 24)-That Christians will be known for having the love of Jesus within (v. 26)The prayer of surrender despite personal anguish (Mark 14:36)He was pierced for our transgressions. - Isa. 53:5aWhen they look on Me, on Him whom they pierced. - Zech. 9:10bIt was the most unusual trial outcome ever – Jesus was proclaimed innocent, yet executed as if He was guilty. The prayer of forgiveness (Luke 23:34)The prayer that our sin caused (Matthew 27:46)The prayer of completion (Luke 23:46; John 19:30)The prayer of blessing over a meal (Luke 24:30-31, 35)The prayer of blessing (Luke 24:50-52)Consequently, He is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. - Heb. 7:25

Welcome to Day 2611 of Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom – Theology Thursday – “Jesus Is God: Jude and Peter Tell Me So.” -  I Dare You Not To Bore Me With The Bible. Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2611 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2611 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Today is the 52nd lesson in our segment, Theology Thursday. Utilizing excerpts from a book titled: I Dare You Not To Bore Me With The Bible written by Hebrew Bible scholar and professor the late Dr. Michael S Heiser, we will invest a couple of years going through the entire Bible, exploring short Biblical lessons that you may not have received in Bible classes or Church. The Bible is a wonderful book. Its pages reveal the epic story of God's redemption of humankind and the long, bitter conflict against evil. Yet it's also a book that seems strange to us. While God's Word was written for us, it wasn't written to us. Today's lesson is: “Jesus Is God: Jude and Peter Tell Me So.” The epistles of Peter and Jude are often overlooked in preaching and Bible study. Not only are they nestled among the more popular letters of Paul and the book of Revelation, but portions of these epistles sound odd to our modern sensibilities. That wasn't the case in the first century. We can better grasp the meaning of these letters if we understand what they have in common with influential ancient Jewish and Christian writings that were circulating at the time. One of those literary works is known to us today as 1 Enoch, a book Peter and Jude draw upon in their letters. Jews and Christians of antiquity considered books such as 1 Enoch important resources for understanding biblical books and their theology. Peter and Jude were no exception. For example, Jude 14-15 draws directly from 1 Enoch. 1 Enoch 1:9 Behold, he comes with the myriads of his holy ones, to execute judgment on all, and to destroy all the wicked, and to convict all flesh for all the wicked deeds that they have done, and the proud and hard words that wicked sinners spoke against him. Jude 14-15 It was also about these that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones, to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they have committed in such an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” All of the ideas found in 1 Enoch 1:9 can be found in three Old Testament passages (Jer 25:30-31; Isa 66:15-16; Zech 14:5). Rather than quote all three, Jude quotes the verse in 1 Enoch that combines them. But the real point of interest isn't Jude's succinctness; it's his interpretation of 1 Enoch, as well as the Old Testament. In 1 Enoch 1:9 it is the “Great Holy One” (God) who is “coming with myriads of holy ones” from Sinai (1 Enoch 1:4) and who has promised to come to earth in the day of the Lord for final judgment. For Jude (as well as Mark and Paul; compare Mark 8:38; 1 Thess 3:13) this event is transformed into the return of Jesus Christ (Jude 17-18). By naming...

Through the triumphal entry and the cleansing of the temple, Jesus publicly announced his claim to be the Messiah. The leaders of Jerusalem responded with a campaign to discredit him publicly that failed miserably. Knowing what would come, Jesus stayed the course until that fateful moment in Gethsemane when they took him into custody. Join us to relive the magnificent last days of Jesus leading up to his crucifixion and resurrection. Mark 11:1-2, 7 When Jesus rode into Jerusalem on the donkey, he enacted an ancient prophecy (Zech 9:9-10) and simulated the coronation of a king (2 Kgs 9:11-13). Even the palm branches were politically charged (1 Macc 13:51-52). Mark 11:9-10 Even more striking was the proclamation of the crowd, associating Jesus with the coming Kingdom of David. Coming into Jerusalem this way crossed the line. Mark 11:15-19 Cleansing the temple got everyone's attention. Jesus interfered with the sacrificial system and the flow of money. The leaders of Jerusalem responded with a campaign to discredit Jesus publicly through stumper questions. Jesus answered them all and countered by confronting them with seven woes (Mat 23:13-16). Mark 14:1-9 Allowing a woman to pour out an ointment that cost 300 denarii on his head provoked criticism from onlookers. Jesus defended the woman for her ostentatious display of generosity. Mark 14:10-11 Judas went to the priests to betray Jesus. They needed an opportunity when Jesus was away from the crowds so a riot didn't break out. Judas could tell them where Jesus was at night, so they could arrest him secretly. Mark 14:32-36 At Gethsemane, Jesus knew his time was short. He had to stay the course, even if that meant he would face ridicule, torture, and death on a cross. He prayed and prayed and prayed, asking for a way out. The answer was, “No”. Jesus resigned himself to his Father's will and pushed through courageously to face his betrayer and those sent to arrest him. Luke 19:28-40 Meditation turns familiar texts into fresh truths. 1. Jesus is the humble King. • (Zechariah 9:9) - Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!     Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!     Behold, your king is coming to you;     righteous and having salvation is he,     humble and mounted on a donkey,     on a colt, the foal of a donkey. • “He does not arrive as his royal highness but his royal lowliness." • v.41) “And when He drew near and saw the city, he wept over it.” 2. Jesus is the peaceful King. • “He shall speak peace to the nations.” (Zech. 9:10) • Our peaceful King didn't come to punish but to plead for our peace with God. 3. Jesus is the King of Kings • Revelations 19:11-16 • Nothing can silence the praise of God. Submit to the King • v.32) "So those who were sent went away and found it just as He had told them" • As I keep submitting to God's Word, I will see how much God keeps His Word.
