Tahni Cullen spoke at a women's retreat I emceed over ten years ago, and her story is one I'll never forget. I sat alone in the front row and wept as she shared about how her son, Josiah, a happy, talkative baby, regressed at the age of 19 months into the world of a non-speaking autistic diagnosis. When Josiah was around 7 or 8 years old, he began spelling, and the fire within him roared. Tahni has been the torchbearer of her son's thoughts and livelihood since. In the spirit of overcoming tremendous adversity, as we discussed in our previous episode with Mark Black, we introduce to you today Tahni Cullen. Than was blessed with a beautiful baby, who was named Josiah, "Fire of God." However, within just a couple of years, it was evident that Josiah was a bit different. He was sadly diagnosed with autism, leaving Tahni and her husband devastated.Yet, rather than wallow in self-pity, Tahni and her husband chose to seek the best care for Josiah, which eventually led them to realize that Josiah may be different from his peers, but he has a true fire within that inspires others in ways so-called "ordinary" people can.In this interview with Tahni, you'll learn:-The discovery of Josiah's autism, and the initial response to it...02:45-Where is hope when there is no hope?...05:45-Vaccines and inoculations and their role in bringing about autism...08:50-The moment Tahni had a ray of hope for the future of Josiah...14:00-Josiah has a major breakthrough in his learning and development!...19:00-You'll do anything to help a child become what God means for it to become...22:10-The importance of self-care while caring for another...28:00-Supportive relationships outside the marriage while caring for a special-needs child...34:00-Surprising results from Tahni writing her book about her experiences...37:00-And much more...Resources mentioned:Josiah's Fire bookJosiah's Fire Facebook pageGuest's bio and social handles:I have loved God and the Bible for as long as I can remember. I was seven-years-old when my daddy built me a wooden pulpit. I put on my plaid three-piece wool suit on a snowed-in Sunday to deliver a message on obedience to my family in the living room. Then, one day as this wonderful invention showed up at our house–a VCR–I picked up a flair for the theatrical as I would rewind and rehearse lines from the likes of “Anne of Green Gables.” The love of communication in writing, speaking, theater and sharing compelling stories has always run deep for me. It's funny how you can trace those traits way back even to your childhood.Little did I know that language and expression that I loved the most would be whisked away from my only son, leaving me wounded and speechless before my God. An autism diagnosis at age two for our little boy, Josiah, was so swift, so final, with the words, “No known cause. No known cure. Lifelong.” My deepest question was, “Wow, what happens to hope when there is no hope?” Everything that I loved, believed in, and thought I knew about God got tested. If Jesus was Burden-Bearer, I knew somehow I would have to see if He would be that for me when the pressure of sickness, work, marriage, loneliness, finances, and spiritual wrestling dog-piled on our lives.Like so many things—impossible things—we are told to accept them and to learn to manage and to cope. The world is always trying to get us to just face facts and not to get our hopes up. “Your daughter is dead, Jairus. Why bother the teacher anymore?” But just when the facts start to get locked in as the “final answer,” if we listen hard enough, we will always hear Jesus say the same words He said to this dented father: “Don't be afraid; just believe.” Does the same Jesus we serve today still sound like this? It's a complex road these days to a simple faith like this: don't fear; just believe. I'd been desperately pursuing healing for five years, and learned so much about what intimacy with God, my identity in Christ, and my inheritance really meant to living out a Christ-following life. But despite our gallant efforts to help our son, my boy still...

It was around 2008 when Grant Williams started to tinker with the odd thoroughbred. Prior to that he'd enjoyed a distinguished 20 year career in harness racing as a trainer and driver. His association with leviathan owner/breeder Bob Peters began in 2012. When that partnership terminated early this year, they'd shared success in 15 Gr 1's and countless stakes races. Grant begins by talking about the end of his association with the huge Bob Peters operation. When Bob first offered Grant some horses to train, he thought someone was having a joke with him. Grant explains that he had other loyal owners to consider at the time of the surprise offer. He says that his principal owner had a major contribution to the programming of his horses. Grant pays tribute to his remarkable wife Alana, who as Alana Sansom attained dizzy heights as a jockey in WA. He says Alana continues to ride much of the stable trackwork, and insists on having input where quirky horses are concerned. Grant talks of the communication between he and his wife regarding horses in the stable. The trainer looks back on the trying four months when pandemic regulations kept them apart for four long months. He was campaigning horses in Melbourne. Alana was ‘holding the fort” in WA. He delights in talking about daughter Tahni who not surprisingly has an inborn affinity with horses. Grant acknowledges his favourites among the cavalcade of talented horses to carry the Bob Peters colours. The dual code trainer describes the facilities available at his Karnup operation, and the positives about the nearby Lark Hill training facility. Grant talks of his friendship and fabulously successful professional association with champion jockey Willie Pike. He pays tribute to a couple of riders who filled the void while Willie was campaigning in the east this year. Grant reflects on twenty happy years in harness racing, much of it under the tutelage of his trainer/dad Ray. He talks of Ray's involvement in a number of his gallopers. Grant looks back on his high points in harness racing and pays tribute to a couple of his best pacers. He admits he's expecting a loss of momentum before his stable is up and running again. Grant tries to forecast his likely future in the WA training ranks.

Later he was diagnosed as “Severe, non-verbal” and was told he will probably never talk. Years later Tahni took Josiah to an RPM workshop where he began to learn to communicate. They trained her to continue the therapy and said he is an auditory learner, so “speak to him as though he is blind and explain his environment to him.” Later he began to type out full sentences, talking about amazing things like God, angels and a dead Aunt he had never met. She has written a book called Josiah’s Fire, in which she recounts the incredible story of hope and God’s love through her autistic son. Tahni lays out how the greatest inheritance we can leave our children is for them to see us receive God’s love, and for them to see that love extended to them. God is not waiting for our performance but desires true relationship and ‘shalom’ for both us and for our children. Tahni talks about how to intentionally pass on God’s Blessing to those around us.Kaylin and Christy’s mission is to strengthen moms to be fully loved and fully free, and to equip them to parent the next generation in this same love and freedom. That is the journey I had to enter when our son was given the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder: No known cause, no known cure, lifelong. It felt like the gavel came down on all our dreams.” -Tahni“I kept having to look to God for hope and that was a choice most times when I didn’t feel like it. I felt disillusioned and I felt like I was losing everything…” -Tahni“In the professional world, everyone was telling us ‘you need to learn how to cope with what is happening’ and I went to the Bible and asked God to give me some examples and show me how to do this. I couldn’t find one example of coping, just managing around the circumstances you have. Everything was hope. Everything was hope against hope: that even when hope was lost, you still hope!” -Tahni“To choose to hope that God is good, that the future is good, that you can declare and speak life over the situation… to do that is to risk disappointment, but to not hope is to choose disappointment.” -Tahni“To choose to hope, I will make different decisions, I will speak different things, I will declare life instead of just trying to keep from circling the drain. Choosing to hope will change me on the inside, it can change the atmosphere in my home and it can change the context in which my own son will grow up.” -Tahni“How do I live in this dichotomy between the circumstances and storms of life and Jesus who says ‘I came to give you peace’ and calmed storms?”-Tahni“I’m constantly having to go before God and asking ‘Who do you say that I am?’ and also answering the question when God asks me ‘Who do you say that I am?’ Am I able to say “You are the Son of the Living God and You have died to give me the Kingdom”? And if I’m not experiencing joy, peace, righteousness in the realm of the Holy Spirit, which is, as a Christ-follower, something I’ve been promised, then I’m missing something.” -Tahni“If you can find out what your kid’s name means, and if it means something, when you speak their name, you’re speaking the blessing of their name. So I started speaking life over my son by saying ‘Josiah, you are the fire of the Lord, the one who Jehovah heals. Josiah, God is your salvation.’” -Tahni“I would speak life over my son when autism was trying to consume him and our family and it’s still a fight and a battle to keep autism from winning the day. But it doesn’t get to be king.” -Tahni“‘God is a good gift-giver’ became the thesis statement for our lives.” -Tahni

Welcome to The Shaun Tabatt Show! In this episode I speak with Tahni Cullen about her book Josiah's Fire: Autism Stole His Words, God Gave Him a Voice. Here are the questions Tahni and I discuss in this interview: Since this is your first time on the show, let's begin by giving the listeners a chance to get to know you better. Start us off with a bit of the Tahni Cullen origin story. (00:38 - 03:01) Next I'd like to hear about those early days with your son Josiah. When did you suspect there might be something going on with him medically? (03:02 - 06:11) What were those early days like after you received Josiah's initial diagnosis? (06:12 - 11:24) Tell us about the day Josiah began typing words on the iPad. What did he say and why was it so significant? (11:25 - 14:53) Talk to us about some of the things Josiah was sharing about angels, heaven and words of knowledge; now that you had this communications channel established. (14:54 - 18:19) Tell us about the Facebook page you've been using to extend the message of the book and to share some of the additional things Josiah is sharing with you. (18:20 - 24:45) What sort of a grid or worldview did you have for the supernatural when this all began and how has it shifted or changed in the midst of your unfolding journey alongside Josiah? (24:46 - 36:01) Tahni, what parting challenge or encouragement would you want to share with every reader as they're finishing the last page of Josiah's Fire? (36:02 - 41:58) Tahni, I know many of my listeners are going to want to find out more, so where can they connect with you online and where can they can get a copy of the book? (41:59 - 42:37) About the Book:  First-time parents Joe and Tahni Cullen were thrust into the confusing world of autism when their toddler, Josiah, suddenly lost his ability to speak, play, and socialize. The diagnosis: Autism Spectrum Disorder. In their attempts to see Josiah recover and regain speech, the Cullens underwent overwhelming physical, emotional, and financial struggles. While other kids around him improved, Josiah only got worse. Five years later, Josiah, who had not been formally taught to read or write, suddenly began to type on his iPad profound paragraphs about God, science, history, business, music, strangers, and heaven. Josiah's eye-opening visions, heavenly encounters, and supernatural experiences forced his family out of their comfort zone and predictable theology, catapulting them into a mind-blowing love-encounter with Jesus. Find hope in hardship. Catch a fresh glimpse of heaven. Learn to hear and trust God's voice. Identify the roles of Father, Son, and Spirit. Be aware of the workings of angels, and much more! Follow a trail of truth into Josiah's mysterious world, and see why his family and friends can no longer stay silent.
