We had so much fun revisiting Mid-World for this episode – it's the first series that brought us together as book nerds twenty years ago, and it's absolutely just as good as the first day we read it. So thankful it helped tie our friendship together, and laid the foundation for meeting all the rest of you Hugonauts all these years later!  The Dark Tower defies (or bridges) genres, with elements of sci-fi, fantasy, western, horror, and more, all rolled into one legendary package. And Roland Deschain, the Gunslinger, is an incredible main character, and we'll never forget the rest of the Ka-Tet either. And the ending – we won't spoil it here, but man do we like thinking about this ending (it's one of the most polarizing in all of literature). The Alabama Crimson Tide has had an active midweek bye this week without playing a game, the Crimson Tide may have former Alabama Basketball big man Charles Bediako available Saturday against the Tennessee Volunteers at 7:30 on ESPN. It was an active Wednesday on the Bediako front as a Tuscaloosa judge ruled in his favor with a temporary restraining order against the NCAA that allows Bediako to be eligible for Saturday's game during the delay prior to the Tuesday hearing that will determine his ultimate eligibility. The NCAA is not happy about this and coaches and ADs from across the country have weighed in on what has happened in Tuscaloosa. We will hear from them. This episode features Dr. Sean Miller, a neuroscientist and co-investigator in the Logan Lab with a primary appointment at Yale School of Medicine, who is developing ways to non-invasively detect Alzheimer's-like pathology through the eye. Guest Sean Miller, PhD Co-Investigator, Logan Lab / Yale School of Medicine Dr. Sean Miller completed pre-doctoral work at Harvard Medical School, earned his PhD from Johns Hopkins University, and completed post-doctoral training at Stanford University. His research focuses on neurodegeneration, neuroglia, and early diagnostic strategies for Alzheimer's and related diseases. At the AlzPI & PCOM Symposium, Dr. Miller presented evidence showing that SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) infection can accelerate Alzheimer's-like pathology and that these changes can be detected non-invasively through retinal imaging. His findings suggest that amyloid-beta, a protein long associated with Alzheimer's disease, may also serve as part of the brain's antimicrobial defense system—trapping pathogens like a mesh or biofilm, but leading to damaging plaque buildup when overproduced. Key Discussion Points Dr. Miller describes how the COVID-19 virus can act as an infectious trigger for neuroinflammation and amyloid buildup, how the eye provides a unique window into the brain, and why early detection is essential to preventing neuron death.
