A couple weeks ago I began to have some issues that I knew had to be more than just the common cold, ear infection, or sickness. My concerns were confirmed with a diagnosis of Bell's Palsy. This condition causes the facial nerves on one side to become paralyzed and lead to a host of other issues if not given the right support. I'm finally (by the Grace of God) not in as much pain as I was. Enjoy this interview with Logan Crumrine, a Crohn's disease warrior of more than 30 years, advocate, and writer. Logan was first diagnosed in 1990. For years he fluctuated between states of flares, semi-remission, clinical trials and surgeries, and then went into complete remission for over 15 years! But remission came to an end in 2012 and he spent the next few years fighting for his life and eventually filed for disability. Today, he's now in his second year of remission and living life to the fullest.  Some of you will remember Logan as one of my repeat guests. He shared the first part of his story in episode 29 of this podcast in July 2019, and came back a year later in 2020 to talk about his experience and knowledge about going through the process of filing for disability.  Today, he's back to update us on his journey and share what it's like to now live in remission. From the show: Stephanie: What kind of tips do you have for other people who are finding themselves newly in remission and still afraid to let go of the habits that they've held onto for so many years as their safety net? Logan: I think the best advice would be that you've kind of got to do your own walk in that. You've got to kind of let go of those things as you feel comfortable. I still carry supplies in my backpack, but I don't carry as many. I don't carry an extra change of clothes, so my backpack has gotten down to just some undergarments in there and some stuff to clean up if I need to. It's a much smaller kit, but again, I'm still learning. It's still automatic for me to put all that stuff on when I'm going out. And I think it's just, you just kind of have to challenge yourself and push yourself. It helps too that I have Leah with me, who's an incredible partner who reminds me, ‘hey, you know, you made this trip a couple of times without anything. Why don't you try it again?' Or I'll be able to share with her that I didn't even get ready like I normally do for a trip. And then it's kind of an epiphany almost to say, ‘oh wow, we don't need that stuff all the time anymore.' Stephanie: You've shared on social media a few times about struggling with Crohn's and depression. Can you talk about how you've coped through some of the hardest times and how has remission affected your overall mental health? Logan: I think remission has helped my mental health and has benefited it. I still struggle with depression and sometimes, some days, it's absolutely debilitating. Right now, my depression seems to be presenting itself with insomnia. So I can be tired at seven o'clock and think, okay, I'm going to head to bed around nine and then I'm up till two. So it seems to be presenting that way. I think being in a place with more sunlight has helped. Seasonal depression affected me really bad in Washington because where I lived in Washington, from about October to March, it's very dark and very gray. It's nice to be able to look out the window and see blue skies and sun, I'm trying to get back to exercising because that's so vital to mental health. Stephanie: You have shared on social media about your fitness journey and just getting to a place of better overall health, what were some of the baby steps or the ways that you started to get back into that as you were feeling better? Logan: I think that, and for the record, my hiking and walking come and go, like any kind of fitness thing, I do really good for a while and kind of back off for a little while. I think that one thing that I had to do is realize that I have to start with what I can do, even if it's five minutes of getting outside and taking a walk. I started when I was starting to get my health back. I was just literally doing laps around the cul-de-sac. And that's all I could do, just walk around the cul-de-sac very slow with a cane. It was very difficult for me to even get out and do anything. And now, I mean, where I was at the height that's kind of dropped off since we moved, but I'm trying to get back into it. I think I was doing three or four miles a day walking. I was lifting regularly because again, medications that you get on Crohn's and colitis, steroids, sometimes those things play havoc on your bones. She was such an incredible host in terms of really allowing me to be comfortable and share how I really felt. , as a podcast host myself, I know. In this wild ride of an episode, we jump back into part 2 of my Amazon Rainforest experience and my first sittings with Ayahuasca. I can't tell you how obsessed I am from this experience and all the things I am still learning weeks later. When my first Aya trip didn't show itself the way I expected, I honestly became a little frustrated. I was looking for answers in the wrong things, I was looking for something profound and beyond myself. When Voice told me I didn't need to take Aya to get spiritual awakening or to transcend. I thought - well what's the point? During reflection, it was revealed to me that I was hiring mama Aya as my mentor to help me grow in a shorter amount of time then it would take me to heal or come to terms myself. And duh. We can all do it ourselves. But the reason WHY we hire mentors is to collapse time between where we are and where we wanna go. Reflecting with the tribesmen and their reasons why they take Aya, it was so different then the reasons of why us Westerners tend to take the medicine. They ask her for more creativity, to understand music more, for the music of nature, how we can future understand the medicine to help others, how we can innovate the community. They were looking at it as a way to speak and procreate with nature so they can live with ease among the nature. When you feel the force, just ask. Oh my God, we are back. Today's episode, we are kicking off Season 3 of this podcast diving into my experience of traveling to the Amazon Rainforest, sitting with Ayahuasca, and finding community among the Yawanawa tribe. After my 9 days, I am forever changed. The impact that this trip has had on me, my spiritual journey, my business, my creative momentum - I cannot wait to share this wisdom with you all. From the moment that I touched the sand and stepped into the canoe to take a 7 hour journey down the river to join the Yawanawa tribe, I knew I had been there before. All external worries were shed and I was hyper-present. Feeling the magic and connecting to my innate gifts, we were all here to connect, celebrate and expand. And as we traveled down the river, I couldn't help but feel this magnetic pull to everything around me. There is so much life and abundance everywhere. The rainforest is the home and heart of so much creation and it would only make sense that it would become the catalyst for my creative enlightenment. And then all of a sudden, I am here. This experience that (honestly) didn't even sound real to begin with - is here. And I am surrounded by the Yawanawa people who's lessons transcended spoken tongue. They taught me about community, connection, and the universal language of kindness and love. The way they could connect with people though smiles, touch, embraces- they inspire me to think deeper on “what makes me happy”. The eternal world never makes us happy, its the love we find within ourselves & others and the love we are willing to accept. In 2008, I founded the international Day of Self Love - February 13th -  to bring a deeper and practical awareness and understanding to self-love. This was meant not to be one day to celebrate ourselves, but a day to pause and look within at our inner foundation, and reveal what kind of self-love we needed to receive and strengthen this coming year. And then practically choose to do so. You see, "Do I love myself?"  is not a yes/no question. There are areas you are strong and weak in. Areas that need tending THIS year. Self-love, or a lack of it, is at the root of the choices we make everyday, the big life choices, and the way we feel in relationship, career and own skin. Self love is primary to emotional, mental and physical wellness.  Our leadership presence. Our prosperity. Our sense of belonging and being valued. Our thoughts, emotions, health. All linked to self-love. But most of us were never educated on the different kinds of self-love - what I call the 10 branches of self-love. And in the world of business, money and 'serious' things, self-love is often fluffed and woo wooed away. When honestly if self-love was part of primary education and a sign of a healthy leader, we'd have less narcissitics, less greed, and more of a society where sovereignty and unity could co-exist and healthy inter- connection was the norm. There is SO much power in exploring and embodying each of the 10 branches of self-love which make up the "Self Love Tree." Which is why, this month, we'll explore 4 of the primary branches, one at a time, with perspectives, a practice and inquiries to ponder. And then I encourage you to put them to practice to what you are desiring to create or dealing with in your life, career, wellness and relationships.  Today, in Episode 178: Self Acceptance & Self Worth we explore: The Self Love Tree and the 10 Branches of Self Love Reveal where you are weak and strong in self-love, and where it sits in your body. ONCE UPON A GENE - EPISODE 049 Thanatophoric Skeletal Dysplasia with Ashequka Lacey Ashequka Lacey is a fierce mama bear to Jakobi who was born with thanatophoric skeletal dysplasia which results from a mutation in the FGFR3 gene. Thanatophoric dwarfism is a severe skeletal disorder, but Jakobi has as much strength and determination in his little body as his mom.  EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Tell me about Jakobi. Jakobi is 18 months old and was born with a rare form of dwarfism called thanatophoric skeletal dysplasia. The gene mutation resulted in short limbs, a small rib cage and small lungs, so he is ventilator dependent. At 20 weeks pregnant, I found out there were abnormalities when I went for a gender scan. Another ultrasound was done to take measurements and although they weren't sure about what type of dwarfism Jakobi had, the doctor let me know that it was lethal and they advised I terminate the pregnancy.  What happened after he was born? The delivery was smooth. I did have a c-section because Jakobi was breech. His legs were too short to flip himself around. There were three teams of medical professionals at Jakobi's delivery and everything happened fast. Jakobi came out screaming, with a head full of hair, big cheeks and weighing 6 lbs. 13 oz. Jakobi was taken directly to Nationwide Children's Hospital upon delivery. Did Jakobi's birth bring a force out in you? It changed me because I went through so much emotionally. Once he was here, I needed to protect him. I also have a 10 year old, Ameir but he never needed me to protect him in the same way. Jakobi brought out a different side of me and I was determined to care for Jakobi, to see that he got the best care and to take him home.  What happened when you got to bring Jakobi home? Once he finally got to come home, it was doing everything I had already been doing at the hospital, just without the nurses. A month after he was sent home, he was re-admitted because his shunt had been exposed and he got bacterial meningitis. He was hospitalized for another month before he came home.  How has Jakobi impacted Ameir's development? It has matured him. He takes care of Jakobi, feeds him, calming him and ensuring he has the things he needs. He just refuses to change diapers. Ameir is a lover, he has a deep understanding and so caring when it comes to Jakobi. How has Jakobi changed you? Jakobi has changed everything for me. I don't complain about much, my world has taken a turn in terms of what I do for business. I'm more appreciative of the small things. I have an 18 month old who has had 6 surgeries, who is connected to a vent and he still smiles and lives his life. I'm a working mom, I'm a single parent, I've started two businesses and wrote a book all while having two kids. For me, it gave me a different type of drive.  Can you tell us about your book? I self-published a book called Jakobi and Me about Ameir and Jakobi from Ameir's point of view about having a sibling with special needs. It explains Jakobi's condition in laymen's terms and explains that even though Jakobi looks different, he's just like any other baby. You can purchase the book online.  What do you want people to know about your family? I want people to know that regardless of having a child with special needs, life goes on. Certain things happen that may come with challenges, but never give up. I've dealt with so much, but it has never been enough to keep me down or keep me from my dreams and what I want to do. Confidence is all about learning how to trust yourself. Trust that you are enough, and trust yourself to make aligned decisions. ⠀ ⠀ I used to lack sooooooo much confidence and although it takes time and patience, creating confidence happens when you decide to no longer decide to stay where you are and continually step out of your comfort zone. ⠀ ⠀ If you intend on creating a level of self-Confidence you’ve never had before I would start with these two things: ⠀ ⠀ First make a list of all the areas in which you don’t trust yourself right now- this will help expand your self-awareness! ⠀ ⠀ Second, make a list of all the people in your life you DO trust… and why. So you’re all dolled up for a holiday party and things are going great until your friend whips out her phone and demands that you all take a group picture… full body. You really don’t want to take a picture because you’ve been bumming about a few extra pounds lately and you absolutely HATE the way you look next to your 22yr old friend who’s got a banging body and has yet to know the struggles of post-breastfeeding boob saggage, and not to mention you just gobbled down like a million pieces of cheese off that charcuterie board.  But you don’t want to NOT be in the photo because then you’d be the odd woman out and then everyone in the room would definitely want to try and pump you up with all kinds of comments that, let’s be real, are deflected as quickly as they are dished out. So you take the picture, and you feel like you just HAVE to see it immediately and give the stamp of approval or else you are totally going to demand that your friend delete it and take another one so you have a second chance at nailing that ass-out, leg-popped, shoulders back pose. Ladies… what the shit?! Do you feel me on this?? We can’t let that get in the way of us doing what we want to do or prevent us from showing up in scenarios we want to participate in. I think there is some value in looking good, but it has nothing to do with your worth, capability, skill or value. There is some value to liking the way you look because, when you look good- you feel good.  So take care of your body and take care of your health, wear some make up… whatever boosts the vibe. Where it becomes a trap is when we think our looks are directly connected to our value and our capabilities and the things that make up our worth. I want you to feel empowered and know that what you wear, how your hair is styled, what you look like has  o business getting in the way of stopping you from doing the things you want to do! If you have grown up being shy or insecure you have 100% been in situations , relationships, friendships, environments, workplace scenarios where you felt left out. Call it FOMO, left out, ostracized… either way it feels like crap. It’s the fear of being left out and ostracized which is ultimately creating these situations for us.  We worry about disappointing others, not being fun enough, not being enough for others. We going into situations and events with that fear exuding from us. We get so focused on these negative feelings, fears and worries and what that does it energetically separates us from people.
