For many years, Thao Nguyen lived what she calls a divided life. As a young performer she played down her ethnicity, to the detriment of her sense of identity. And though she identifies as queer and was openly out in her personal life, professionally she never really addressed her sexuality, for fear of it harming her family. For years the shame festered, finally bubbling to the surface on Temple, the latest album by Thao & The Get Down Stay Down. It’s an album of catharsis, in which she addresses her sexuality and her relationship with her family and Vietnamese heritage, while attempting to bridge once and for all the disparate areas of her life. Her journey to this point has been long and not always easy, as she explains in this heartfelt interview.

We’re back from a *brief* hiatus to bring you the first episode of 2020. We’re getting all kinds of heady dissecting the phrasing, attire and spaces we frequent and what makes then “queer” “kinky” “sexy” etc…. How do we react to each of these individually and how do they influence or affect our behavior. Kinky queer architect Vanilla Honey shares her kink journey from her first experience with latex to her fantasy of designing the minimalist dungeon of your dreams. We question what is normal and why are we so concerned with it? Do you have questions or feelings--ALL THE FEELINGS--that need attention? On this week's episode of Southern Fried Asian, Keith talks to Thao Nguyen, frontwoman of the critically acclaimed indie band Thao & The Get Down Stay Down. Thao and Keith talk about growing up in Virginia and whether Northern Virginia even counts as the South (3:30). Then she discusses her early country and folk music influence and why there aren't many Asian Americans in those genres (7:00). Thao remembers her other early influences, which trace back to Lillith Fair and -- no shame -- Sarah MacLachlan (11:00), what it was like being the only Asian American girl in Virginia's indie folk/country scene (14:00), and what happens when your college town is also Colonial Williamsburg (17:00). Finally, Thao reveals how she turned an emotional trip to Vietnam with her mother into an equally emotional movie about the experience (23:00) and why steamed rockfish reminds her of home (37:00). Nobody Dies makes it world premiere on Thursday, September 7 at the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco. Tickets for the screening and a music performance by Thao are available here. Subscribe to the Southern Fried Asian podcast on iTunes and Google Play. Our official theme music is the song "Top Down" by Chops, Timothy Flu, and Mic Barz. This week, Tom and Chad discuss the two Reading the World Book Club books for February: On the Edge by Rafael Chirbes, translated from the Spanish by Margaret Jull Costa (New Directions), and Monospace by Anne Parian, translated from the French by Emma Ramadan (La Presse). Admittedly, neither of them know much about contemporary poetry, but they do try their best when talking about Parian and how to approach her collection. On the Edge plays to both of them though, with it's bleak, despairing outlook on life, and the way it sort of wallows in tragedy. Tom also wants all listeners to know that he and Chad DID NOT record the podcast shirtless. There should be a regular, rambling podcast up in between this one an the next RTWBC-centric one, but either way, the two books they're reading in March are The Vegetarian by Han Kang, translated from the Korean by Deborah Smith (Crown), and Diorama by Rocío Cerón, translated from the Spanish by Anna Rosenwong (Phoneme Media). This year’s Noise Pop festival featured a collaborative performance from two of our favorite artists: Thao and Mirah. That show happened to fall on a full moon, so it’s no surprise that it went over so well! Not long after, the duo decided to pull together members of their respective bands for a summer tour as Thao and Mirah with The Most Of All. What a treat it was, to host them in Studio C for their final day of rehearsal before the big tour. We edited together our favorite parts of that magical afternoon for to present in this episode. We hope you enjoy.
